The Astro City Mini launched in late 2020 as part of Sega's 60th Anniversary celebrations. The last truly "new" mini Sega released, it played host to a number of titles that never came home, and a supposedly perfect conversion of Virtua Fighter. Did it deliver, four years on, when the SEGAGuys got their units?

Are you ready to meet our new favorite henchman, Barfly? Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, Kyle Starks, and Ryan Browne are eager to make introductions. Their new series, spun "from the world of Minor Threats," drills even deeper into the philosophical pursuit initiated by the original run that began two years ago. The lowliest punk in Twilight City has a rich inner life, and he'd love to share it with you if you can set aside your primordial revulsion toward sh*teaters. You don't need to browse long on the rack before encountering another comic deconstructing the superhero genre. Ever since 1986, every creator, it seems, wants to put forth their subversive effort, but Minor Threats avoids the usual cynical choices, embracing Silver Age nonsense and the joys that come with it. Minor Threats and its latest spin-off, Barfly, showcase tremendous humanity, using absurdity to expose genuine pain and triumph. The sincerity marks Minor Threatsas the most exciting superhero universe since Astro City. We're downright chuffed to have Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks back on the podcast. Together, we question the name thrust upon our protagonist, his possible desire to be more than a henchman, and whether those seeking to be masterminds are driven or simply delusional. Also, does Superman go to the bathroom? At least one participant in our conversation has powerful feelings about that. From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly #1 is published by Dark Horse Comics and arrives in comic shops on July 10th. It's written by Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks. Ryan Browne illustrated and colored it, and Nate Piekos lettered it. Continue this conversation by following Patton Oswalt on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. A special bonus ep, kind of, which is JUST the "loose screws" segment. This was recorded for next week's ep (in which re review the Spider-Man 2 video game), but we decided it was TOO long and hence you're getting it this week. Will talks about the "Dark Age" storyline from the comic Astro City. Kevin discusses the recent MCU film The Marvels and the Apple+ TV show Monarch. Episode 199!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Superman: Secret Identity"! Collecting the critically lauded 4-issue miniseries written by Kurt Busiek (JLA/AVENGERS, ASTRO CITY) with art by Stuart Immonen (SUPERMAN: END OF THE CENTURY, THOR). Set in the real world, SECRET IDENTITY examines the life of a young Kansas man with the unfortunate name of Clark Kent. All Clark wants is to be a writer, but his daily life is filled with the taunts and jibes of his peers, comparing him to that other Clark Kent -- the one with super-powers. Until one day when Clark awakens to discover that he can fly...that he does in fact have super-strength! But where did these powers come from? And what's he going to do about it? Superman: Secret Identity is a four-issue mini-series written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by Stuart Immonen. It was first published monthly, starting January 2004. The title was not released under the Elseworlds banner, but is regarded as a non-canonical story. The story describes the life of Clark Kent, a man in a world in which superheroes exist only as characters in comics, who suddenly gains the powers of Superman and embarks on a super-heroic career, but keeps his existence secret from the world at large. Matt and Mike Read Comics episode 4 is all about Astro City. Dropping in 1995 like an atom bomb in the comics world, Astro City was a refreshing take on comics in the middle of the extreme era of comics. We all know that mainstream comics in the 90's were flooded with big guns, exaggerated muscles, gigantic shoulderpads, fingerless gloves, those weird head protectors, and pouches. So. Many. Pouches. Astro City was a major throwback to the golden age of comics where the heroes had silly names and sometimes even sillier costumes; a world that revolved around a fictional city where there was never a question about the heroes intentions. But as you read on, Astro City quickly becomes something else, masterfully incorporating more modern and darker takes on comics, weaving an interconnected tale while spotlighting the champions of Astro City. A must read for all comic book fans.
