International Podcasting Day 17 Years In The Making

It's International Podcast Day! A day when podcasters around the globe celebrate their craft and their journey, regardless if they've been podcasting for 17 days or 17 years. Speaking of that last one… I'm going to break down the +17-year journey of one podcaster—me!—if only to prove that, for many of us, podcasting is quite a tangled path. My official entrance to podcasting started in October of 2004 with The Dragon Page. Soon after that we launched Slice of Scif, followed quickly by Wingin' It. After adding a podcast we didn't host called The Dragon Page With Class to our roster, we launched the first scifi podcast network called FarPoint Media. And it was still 2005! Parallel to all of that, I personally started working with authors to help them podcast, soon creating a network of “podiobooks”, a portmanteau of podcasting and audiobooks, if that wasn't obvious. Tha directly led to me co-authoring Podcasting For Dummies and Expert Podcasting Practices For Dummies.  parting ways with FarPoint Media in mid-2007, I launched two short-lived podcasts: Cult Cast and Found Things. You're better for not hearing either of them. And because I sometimes bet on the wrong trends, I also co-hosted Palm Fu, a podcast all about the Palm Pre smartphone, plus a podcast build on Google+ called The Books & Beer Hangout. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Some time in there, I decided the world needed more me so I did a limited run podcast called Evo at 11. A show that I'm very, very glad I pulled after 100 episodes. Apparently, I can be an asshole behind the mic. Who knew? (Kidding. I knew.)  Then my wife and I left the country, using a podcast to document our travels around the world. Then I found out it's a lot of work to produce a journalistic style podcast. But those travels led me to living in Bangkok where I became the co-host of the 2nd season of The Bangkok Podcast.  And Bangkok is where my podcast consultancy, Simpler Media, was born. I've been back in The States since 2018, and podcasting is very much what I do. Not just with Podcast Pontifications, but I also do some hired-gun hosting for RadioMD, am the editor for Sounds Profitable, and sit on the advisory board for Captivate.fm, Maps,fm, Scrib, and a few others. My wish for you on International Podcast Days is that your podcasting journey be as varied and rewarding as mine. Cheers! ----- Boostagram Corner: Thank you, Dave Jackson, for the sats boost! 1. Sonic Society Theme and Intro 2. Introduction With Jack Ward and Shannon Hilchie: Hi All! Welcome back to the Sonic Society, now complete with working feed! That's right folks its a full serve podcast with no waiting! If you're listening to this show on Tuesday night, there's a good chance then that the feed is well and truly back to itself. We had a bit of a problem last week, with the feed, but we thank Libsyn for the fix. By all means if you want some specifics about the problems we had check out Audiodramatalk.com or the Sonic Society Facebook group, but for now we're just glad we're back. A couple of quick notes... We've received all the instrumentals for Shannon's Torch Album... so expect the tunes to be coming your way soon! I'm giving our girl no more than two weeks to prepare. Count down folks! Secondly, the Sonic Society Audio Awards for 2007-2008 year are closed. Judges are tabulating the result! You can expect that Awards to happen at the end of the month! Thirdly, we just want to thank everyone for the kind words said about episode #1 of Gate and a special thanks to all the actors who have worked solidly this month. Seriously folk... we've done nearly a month of two episodes a week. That's a lot of prep work for actors to go through, get in the moment and perform. And finally we can officially say everything is a GO as we signed a deal with Farpoint Media and Shannon and I to host "The Library of Jack and Shannon" which will be a fiction podcast due out any time now. We're just getting ready for our feed.. and our theme music. We actually have been looking into the podsafe music network to obtain a feed and give poor Sharon Bee a break, but for some reason, the preview of songs aren't working for us lately.. is that just us, or is there something going on with the Podsafe Music Network itself? Let us know... And speaking of let us know.. We've got some feed back on the Zug Beud line... First off, its Society faithful, Matt Leong. Before we get going, we just want to express our hopes and prayers to Matt and his wife. I don't think we're betraying any confidences when we say that there's a health issue going on in the family right now, and we'd like everyone in the Sonic Society to go over to the DoubledorkMeter podcast (URL in the show nores) and give Matt and Emily your good wishes for a steady recovery. Matt has been a long time listener, has an amazing podcast, is a phenomenal artist, and has entertained many of us here at the Society for a long time now, and it's really time to give back a little and let him know you care. Just to show you how above and beyond Matt is.. in this past week, while we were having our woes with the feed, Matt offered AND posted the latest show up on the Doubledork Meter. Thanks Matt... on with your zug call. 3. Vamp Questions Matt: Are you a Frog Brother or are you a Scoobie? Thanks for finding the geekiest reference in episode 1, Matt! Derek: 1. What's our top three? 2. Time Enough- Poutine. Shannon loves or hates? Poutine is pretty much everywhere in Eastern Canada now. 3. Question the Third. Jack's Pirate Show. Pirate resources. Thanks so much Derek! How did you find us? We're always interested! Here's the most recent books I'm reading on the subject: A History of Pirates Pirates and Outlaws of Canada Pirate Hunter- The True Story of Captain Kidd Pirates- An Illustrated History I'm also playing Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Pirate Hunter simply for flavour. I recognize the inaccuracies of it all. Alexa Chipman has me worried... She's a naval historian, and I hate getting things wrong! Speaking of Alexa... Miss Chipman has also graced us with a message from good ol' Zug. Alexa: If you could go to any period of history... what would it be and why? Well, this is one of my favourite little intellectual exercises. Here are my questions involved. 1. Are we going to visit or live there permanently? 2. Can we speak the language or not? 3. Would we be able to interact wi

Grailwolf's Geek Life Tribute to Joe MurphyJoseph Murphy1972 - 2007There will be no regular episode of Grailwolf's Geek Life this week. Instead, I ask you to join me in marking the passing of a wonderful and warm human being. This feed contains a brief intro for the regular listeners of the GGL, a promo for the Joe Murphy Memorial Fund, and then the entire Joe Murphy Tribute produced by Evo Terra, Michael R. Mennenga, Mur Lafferty, and the rest of the Farpoint Media family.  Many thanks to Mur for organizing this amazing tribute, and to Evo Terra for granting me permission to include it in my feed.Show links: The Joe Murphy Memorial Fund has been established to defray some of the costs of Joe's care and the expenses incurred by his family. The remainder will be going to Hospice and to research into leiomyosarcoma carcinoma. For another touching tribute to Joe, check out Jack Mangan's Deadpan Podcast, Episode #53. While you're there, check out the rest of the episodes too. Jack is a great guy and a very funny podcaster. At least, under normal circumstances. The music for the Memorial Fund promo was provided by the funny and talented George Hrab. It was amazing of him to give his work so freely, and I hope that he gets some song downloads out of it, at the very least. Check out this page of tributes to Joe. I especially love the image of Joe and Cap. DISCLAIMER: I promised Evo that I would not alter the tribute in any way, so I left the Farpoint I.D. intact at the beginning and end. Please be aware that I am not affiliated with Farpoint Media and that they are in no way responsible for any of the content which I produced in this feed. There will be another regular episode of the GGL very soon, so keep checking back.  Meanwhile, I urge you to download this file and get to know Joe.Hurdy gur,-Marc
