Welcome to The Happy Mama Movement Podcast. This week's guest is Ilana Yahdav — a certified grief educator, storyteller, and advocate for reimagining our relationship with grief, especially during the profound identity shift of motherhood. In this deeply affirming conversation, we explore the powerful intersection between matrescence and grief, and how validating our emotions can lead to profound healing. We talk about:The transformative power of grief: Ilyana shares how the loss of her father plunged her into a decade-long journey through grief, and how discovering grief recovery changed the course of her life, helping her validate her feelings and eventually support others through their losses.Grief and matrescence as deeply intertwined: Ilyana reflects on the layered grief of becoming a mother—especially during the pandemic—and how discovering the concept of matrescence helped her finally name what she was experiencing. She emphasizes that grief is not just about death, but any significant change in life, including motherhood.Normalizing grief in motherhood: From the loss of identity to everyday transitions like a child's first steps or starting school, Ilana explains how grief is a natural part of motherhood. She highlights the importance of language, validation, and grief recovery tools in helping mothers understand and move through these complex emotions.Grieving who we were while embracing who we're becoming: Ilyana explores how we can hold both grief and gratitude—acknowledging that it's normal to mourn parts of our past selves, even while deeply loving our children and the life we've built.Leaning on community through nonlinear journeys: From motherhood to loss, Ilana reminds us that healing isn't meant to happen in isolation. We need each other. Both grief and matrescence unfold in unpredictable ways—and having a supportive village makes all the difference. If this episode resonated with you, please share it with loved ones who might need this reminder today. This episode is part of our Time Release Capsule series. What are those formative times in our lives, where the lessons are so rich and resonant, it would be a damn shame not to carry those lessons into our lives in the present? It started with a clip of the film "My Dinner With Andre" (starring Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn) that James shared with Ilyana. This began a flooding of memories of when Ilyana studied acting with Andre at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. This conversation shares the lessons taught by Andre, with brilliant nuggets of gold to inspire you forward into 2023. All Music and Lyrics by James Harrell and Ilyana Kadushin.
Can you get the press to come to you? I've always been fascinated by a book written by a PR called Ilyana Stareva. The book argues that it is possible to get journalists coming to you rather than the other way round. I am always on the hunt for fascinating ideas in PR and I finally had a chance to talk to Ilyana and of course I couldn't help but hit the record button as we chatted.

This episode is part of our Make A Difference Non Profit Spotlight Series, where we highlight non profits, organizations and individuals making a difference in their communities. Why do we do this series? If we think we know everything about our communities and our neighbors, chances are we do not, meaning, we only see the surface or we only see the negativity, the division and we do not always get offered the stories of those in our communities who are doing it, using their powers for good. Which is what our Make A Difference Non Profit Spotlight is all about! Today we focus on 50K Souls and its founder Minister G. Mandel Copeland, who is also a musician and music director of United Faith Church of Deliverance in Salisbury, Maryland. 50KSouls is an outreach ministry that was established in 2015 and at that time, it consisted of churches and individual volunteers in the local area of Salisbury, MD. That year was monumental for them and #50KSouls fed 75 families and became incorporated as a non-profit organization in the State of Maryland. Their Current Strategy is to build a network of partners (volunteers, churches, and donors) across the country, that will work together to provide outreach to those individuals and communities that find themselves in despair and need, as a result of natural disasters and/or economic disadvantages. Plus a chat with Ilyana and James live from @nikpodroad on Janes Island National Park. What do you think of when you hear music? Does it bring back memories? Does it make you want to get up and dance? Let's add voice into the mix and think about the images that your mind conjures up. Ilyana Kadushin uses both music and voice. And both manage to affect change, whether narrating or performing a book, producing music or co-hosting the podcast 'No, I Know.' Ilyana has delved into the world of performance, film, art and music melding these creative mediums. Always a part of the storytelling process, Ilyana wrote and performed the one woman "Devour the Apple" musical. She also performed the audio of Stephenie Meyer's bestselling Twilight novels and narrated the heartbreaking memoir of Nobel Laureate Nadia Murad, The Lost Girl. Incredible as it may sound, something positive came out of Superstorm Sandy...the creation of Stories Love Music. Ilyana and her creative partner and husband, James Harrell, were asked to help with some of the displaced seniors. Not knowing what to expect or how they could help, they chose something they both did well...they played music and sang. Music tugs at the heart and can brighten up even the bleakest of times. The moment evolved into Stories Love Music, a nonprofit program for caregivers of seniors with dementia and Alzheimers. Ilyana is an award winning film producer. She won HBO's 2011 Best Documentary for Separate, But Equal. She also won the Audi Award for audiobook narration and is an adjunct faculty of voice and public speaking at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. Aron Bender talks with Ilyana Capellan. She grew up in Aliso Viejo in Orange County, California, a Dominicana-Mexicana who learned early on she liked being out of her comfort zone. That would help explain her decision to go to a Austin Peay State University in Tennessee, travel the country on reality TV shoots, and take a TV reporting gig at WDHN in Dothan, Alabama. But now Ilyana is a lot closer to home. She just started as morning reporter at KGET in Bakersfield. We talk about how she developed her love for storytelling, growing up and then going to college surrounded by people who don't look like her, pressure to "fit in" and straighten her super curly hair, and how she manages post-concussion syndrome from a bunch of cheer injuries. ••• Connect with Ilyana: https://www.instagram.com/Ilyana_/ https://www.facebook.com/IlyanaCapellan/ https://twitter.com/IlyanaCapellan https://www.kget.com/author/ilyana-capellan/ ••• Connect with Aron at www.aronbender.com ••• Music provided by: MOKKA / Journey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rxi3mNPxQs

Everyone knows that watching TV is a crime. Don't do crimes. Don't watch TV. Listen to podcasts instead. Like ours. Our podcast will never hurt you like TV will. Ilyana - @kirbuncle_ Meile - @meile_victoria Serena - @serenatortellin Cover art drawn by Ilyana. Special thanks to Although The Void Departs for our theme song.
The reason Kirby was missing for half of the episode is because he was busy helping us finish our notes for the podcast. Maybe if we hadn't pulled him aside, he would have been able to stop King Dedede from doing a colonialism :( Ilyana - @kirbuncle_ Meile - @meile_victoria Serena - @serenatortellin Cover art drawn by Ilyana. Special thanks to Although The Void Departs for our theme song.
Dark clouds approach our merry band this week as we talk about this electrifying episode! We discuss the uselessness of the Halberd, and Kirby makes a shocking transformation, but not in the way you expect. Ilyana - @kirbuncle_ Meile - @meile_victoria Serena - @serenatortellin Cover art drawn by Ilyana. Special thanks to Although The Void Departs for our theme song.
Don't @ me but I think it would be pretty neat if you could make a sword out of pizza. And then like focus all your thoughts and energy into the pizza sword to make a big pizza energy beam shoot out? That would rule. Ilyana - @kirbuncle_ Meile - @meile_victoria Serena - @serenatortellin Cover art drawn by Ilyana. Special thanks to Although The Void Departs for our theme song.
Turns out our chaotic levels are directly tied to how mean the episode is. Kirby gets bullied by all the meanies in Cappy Town, the Cappies say ACAB, and our friend Meta Knight joins us to spit some deep Kirby lore! It's a Stone Luigi Kirby! You didn't make it! Ilyana - @kirbuncle_ Meile - @meile_victoria Serena - @serenatortellin Cover art drawn by Ilyana. Special thanks to Although The Void Departs for our theme song.
And so our journey begins! And so does Kirby's. Dedede and Escargoon are big bullies and hate poor people but they're also gay and married to each other, so who knows? I promise we're at least a little more comprehensible than Blade Knight. Did someone order calamari? Ilyana - @kirbuncle_ Meile - @meile_victoria Serena - @serenatortellin Cover art drawn by Ilyana. Psychology has traditionally focused on biological, genetic or personality factors to explain why some people cope better or worse than others in adverse situations. However such a focus can lead to a therapeutic dead end as it is very difficult to change a person’s temperament or genetic predispositions. In the first of a series of guest host podcasts, Psychology Masters student Ilyana Keohane introduces Prof Orla Muldoon as she discusses the research carried out at the Centre for Social Issues Research at UL where they address this problem by conducting highly regarded research on the benefits and burdens of so-called ‘collective identities’, such as nationality, socio-economic groups, and ethnicity.
