In the Flamingo Lounge with Rockabilly Greg

This week's guest In the Flamingo Lounge, David Cloyd, is an acclaimed singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, known for his emotive and intricately layered compositions. His upcoming record, Red Sky Warning, due June 6th, is highly anticipated, following the success of singles "Ocean Of Hours" and "Drive With Me," which garnered significant press and Apple Music placements. A self-made artist, Cloyd recorded his 2009 debut, Unhand Me, You Fiend!, in his 9x9-foot Brooklyn apartment. This album reached #1 on eMusic and led to TV placements. His talent further blossomed with reinterpretations of Radiohead and Paul McCartney, expanding his devoted audience. Now based in Buffalo, where he also founded Hook & Ladder Records, Cloyd continues to carve out a unique space in indie music, with his work often drawing comparisons to artists like Radiohead and Peter Gabriel while maintaining his distinct artistic voice. David sat down with Rockabilly Greg on may 28, 2025 to talk about his music, and share a few tracks off his latest record, Red Sky Warning.

On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Adam's next pick, The Rural Alberta Advantage's "Hometowns". Their debut album, it was released in 2008. The album exemplifies the indie rock sound of the time while exploring themes of the the lead singer's upbringing in - you guessed it - rural Alberta. The album was originally released independently in early 2008 and following the band being featured by eMusic as artist of the month in November, they were signed to Saddle Creek Records. Critical reviews of the album were positive, with Pitchfork giving the album an 8. But will the boys be as generous about the album, or would they rather "Sleep All Day"? Come along and find out!

Blackout! Records was formed in 1988 by Bill Wilson and Jim Gibson. In 1989, the label released its album, a New York hardcore compilation album entitled Where the Wild Things Are.[1] The album included tracks from Sheer Terror, Killing Time, and others. After this first release, Gibson amicably parted company to start his own record label, Noiseville Records.  The label ended the 1990s with records from Killing Time, Kill Your Idols, and East Bay/ Berkeley bands Redemption 87 and Powerhouse. The early part of the 2000s brought some new blood, including Crime In Stereo, NJ's The Banner, The Procedure, and The Commercials. The last official Blackout! release was The Fire Still Burns in 2005. Although no longer releasing new music, the label still maintains a blog at its website which is infrequently updated and has the catalog available digitally on Amazon, iTunes, eMusic, Rhapsody, and other major digital outlets through The Orchard. It's a wild world out there, and animals are constantly surprising us by breaking the species barrier. Take the "iguana mermaids," for example—marine iguanas native to the Galápagos Islands that have evolved to swim underwater, resembling miniature aquatic dragons. Then there's the fascinating case of ligers and tigons, hybrids of lions and tigers, blending the characteristics of both majestic big cats. Don't forget about narlugas, the rare hybrid offspring of narwhals and beluga whales, sporting the narwhal's iconic tusk and the beluga's rounded head. How has your understanding of and relationship with Australia Day changed over time? What goes through your mind when you hear a Welcome to Country or Acknowledgment of Country? And what do you think of when you hear the term Aboriginal prosperity? These are just some of the questions touched on in this extended interview with Griefologist, Rosemary Wanganeen, who takes us on a journey towards healing by embracing grief. As you'll hear, there is important work to be done by Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians, and it starts with finding ways to forgive our 1788 ancestors. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, Nataleigh shares a song produced as part of her 13-year-old songwriting competition, eMusic. We can change this - we can educate institutions and organisations about Griefology as a proven method to enact Aboriginal prosperity. It triggered an avalanche of comments like "looking for more handouts", "the solution to Aboriginal prosperity is not different to Whites - get off the grog", "easy fix, pack up the 'dilly bag' and go 'walkabout' and get out of the city, you all get paid by the government no matter where you go, and you will still get everything for nothing no matter where you go, so GET OUT OF THE CITY IF ITS MAKING YOU CRAZY". When the founder and director of the Healing Centre for Griefology, Rosemary Wanganeen, shared how much hurt this caused her team, a flood of compassion arose from many people, including me, who just couldn't process the vitriol the Centre had received. Rosemary Wanganeen Niina Marni (how are you)? Rosemary, you are a Griefologist, a Clinical Loss & Grief Counsellor, today I want to delve into what griefology actually is, what The Seven Phases to Integrating Loss and Grief are, and your upcoming symposium on July 7, along with some discussion of the polarising views about Australia Day, my mixed feelings about Acknowledgement Of Country rituals in some circumstances, some insights about how to approach The Voice, and the buried art of intuition. But first I want to return to those spiteful, racist messages you and your team received. My reaction was almost a carbon copy of everybody else's. We were staggered by the unveiled hatred. One comment from anthropologist, Sue Fraser, summed it up by saying: I am so sorry that you and your team have to deal with these comments. It is sickening and sad that people believe these things, and that they think it's okay to dump these comments on to someone like yourself who is doing such great work for Aboriginal Peoples and for the rest of us as well. Sending love and hugs Sue. However, I think I have a deeper understanding of what was behind those comments, now that I have spent a few weeks listening to you talk. In particular, you shine a light on the psychotic state of the 1788 arrivals, explaining that they became perpetrators of violence having been victims of a broken approach to life that disconnected them from their humanity, in a process that stretches back to Plato and even beyond. Can we please start here because I think your framing of this evolution might help us make sense of the macabre way Romans crucified people, the hideous human waste of The Great War, and even what's happening today in Ukraine. I'd like to dwell a little longer on Australia Day. My own journey over 50 years has been one of a little bit of "rah rah", then many years of indifference (although the public holiday was gratefully received), to a stirred reflection on the "experiment" of South Australia, to growing conflict about how to process my growing understanding of some of the dark, dark stuff my ancestors did, to a point of being rather frozen now. That's why my ears priced up when you mentioned, in a recent interview, the importance of you finding a way to forgive the 1788 arrivals, and the importance of us Anglo people finding a way to forgive them, too. Can you please expand on this? The theme of forgiveness is key, here, but you do differentiate between grief forgiveness vs religious forgiveness. Can you explain this to me? This reflection on words does raise the importance of both language and the process of passing on knowledge. In Sand Talk, Tyson Yunkaporta talks about Europeans named the mountains in the east as The Great Dividing Range, even though it doesn't diving anything (it is, in fact, an song line that connects), and the coral off the east coast as the Great Barrier Reef even though it is not a barrier but in fact another song line that connects. Does this explain why there seems to be such a large gap between indigenous and non-indigenous cultures? Something else Tyson shares in his book is the role of passing on knowledge through stories or yarns and how written words tend to be processed in short term memory but oral stories tend to get stuck into long term memory. As part of discussing this, it also brings up themes of the characters in Aboriginal stories - people, animals, plants, and even rocks and stars. He shared a story about a magpie and a crow that is still triggered every time I see one of those birds (it was part of a story about the importance of taking the learning of knowledge seriously) but I've also heard you tell a story about a meeting with Grandfather Crow. I'd love to understand this dynamic more. We start our episodes with a simple acknowledgement of country and at the netball recently, there was a truly earnest and profound Welcome To Country that had gravitas and meaning. However, I see so many acknowledgement of country rituals that are either blurted out quickly as an inconvenience, or are made overly elaborate and hand-wringing in some theatre settings, that they come across as either hypocritical at one end or virtue signalling on steroids at the other end. What is your thinking about these rituals? One of my clients was warned not to do an acknowledgement of country at an event for fear of offending people but as I learn more about griefology and the seven phases to integrating loss and grief, it seems that fear is because there is stuff bottled up inside many of us and it threatens to blow in harmful ways, or even just uncomfortable ways. Could we walk through these phases? Phase 1 Contemporary Aboriginal DisadvantagePhase 2 Childhood Violations / Losses & Unresolved GriefPhase 3 Australian History; English History; Ancient History; Plato 388 BC.Phase 4& 5 Ancient Traditional CulturePhase 6 Reclamation of Contemporary Loss & Grief ProgramsPhase 7 Develop Training Programs for every sector across society I'm fascinated by your methodology for developing griefology. You talk about intuitive research. What does that mean and how can we be sure the voices we hear inside are not delusions? Can you tell us about the National Symposium on Griefolology at the Adelaide Convention Centre. What it is, who should go, and what you hope it will achieve? Steve references his documentary, Sorry Proof Country, during the interview. It was uploaded to YouTube many years ago when there was a 10-minute limit. So here is part one of the 30-minute film YouTube will guide you to parts two and three as you watch. 01:36:54 Musical Pilgrimage Our featured song this episode is Here in the Woods, by Nataleigh. Nataleigh is a dynamo on the local music scene. She performs all over place but also makes musical magic with her twin sister, Amanda, by hosting an annual music competition called eMusic. The twins invite friends to submit a song that follows three rules; each song has to be original, recorded at home, and meet the 'general' characteristics of the chosen genre. This year the genre is acoustic, but previous years it has been everything from power balads to children's songs. There tend to be about six entries each year and then the 50 or so people who turn up vote on the songs so that a winner can be chosen. The song we're going to listen to is a good accompaniment to this episode. It's called Here in the Woods. It was written by Amanda but both sisters sing it. It's a good choice for this episode because part of what Rosemary Wanganeen was encouraging us to do was to get "into the woods" to reconnect to the stories from the land around us. And this song makes many references to immersing in and observing the woods, the forest, the moon, etc. We wish them all the best for this year's 13th eMusic competition - and thank you to Carol Neller for putting us in touch.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Yancey Strickler, one of the co-founders of Kickstarter, began his working life in journalism in 2000, and managed to make a living as a freelance writer during one of the most difficult times to ply that trade. A few years later, he joined eMusic, where he rose to editor in chief and started an in-house record label to give bands an easier way to get an album out. He began working on Kickstarter long before its April 2009 debut, and remains as excited about its potential to change artists' and creators' lives today as he was before its launch.

Like many industry veterans, however, she didn't set out to play the game. So it was nice to hear about her journey from enthusiastic zinester to digital music trailblazer.

In May 2003, Apple invited me to their headquarters to discuss getting CD Baby's catalog into the iTunes Music Store. iTunes had just launched two weeks before, with only some music from the major labels. Many of us in the music biz were not sure this idea was going to work. Especially those who had seen companies like eMusic do this exact same model for years without big success. I flew to Cupertino thinking I'd be meeting with one of their marketing or tech people. When I arrived, I found out that about a hundred people from small record labels and distributors had also been invited. We all went into a little presentation room, not knowing what to expect. Then out comes Steve Jobs. Whoa! Rock star. He was in full persuasive presentation mode. Trying to convince all of us to give Apple our entire catalog of music. Talking about iTunes success so far, and all the reasons we should work with Apple. He made a point of saying, “We want the iTunes Music Store to have every piece of music ever recorded. Even if it's discontinued or not selling much, we want it all.” This was huge, because until 2003, independent musicians were always denied access to the big outlets. For Apple to sell all music, not just music from artists who had signed their rights away to a corporation, this was amazing! Then they showed us the software we'd all have to use to send them each album. The software required us to put the audio CD into a Mac CD-Rom drive, type in all of the album info, song titles and bio, then click [encode] for it to rip, and [upload] when done. I raised my hand and asked if it was required that we use their software. They said yes. I asked again, saying we had over 100,000 albums, already ripped as lossless WAV files, with all of the info carefully entered by the artist themselves, ready to send to their servers with their exact specifications. The Apple guys said, “Sorry, you need to use this software; there is no other way.” Ugh. That means we have to pull each one of those CDs off of the shelf again, stick it in a Mac, then cut-and-paste every song title into that Mac software. But so be it. If that's what Apple needs, OK. They said they'd be ready for us to start uploading in the next couple weeks. I flew home that night, posted my meeting notes on my website, emailed all of my clients to announce the news, and went to sleep. When I woke, I had furious emails and voicemails from my contact at Apple. “What the hell are you doing? That meeting was confidential! Take those notes off your site immediately! Our legal department is furious!” There was no mention of confidentiality at the meeting and no agreement to sign. But I removed my notes from my site immediately, to be nice. All was well, or so I thought. Apple emailed us the iTunes Music Store contract. We immediately signed it and returned it the same day. I started building the system to deliver everyone's music to iTunes. I decided we'd have to charge $40 for this service, to cover our bandwidth and payroll costs of pulling each CD out of the warehouse, entering all the info, digitizing, uploading, and putting it back in the warehouse. 5000 musicians signed up in advance, each paying $40. That $200,000 helped pay for the extra equipment and people needed to make this happen. Within two weeks, we got contacted by Rhapsody, Yahoo Music, Napster, eMusic, and more — each saying they wanted our entire catalog. Yes! Awesome! Maybe you can't appreciate this now, but the summer of 2003 was the biggest turning point that independent music has ever had. Until that point, almost no big business would sell independent music. By iTunes saying they wanted everything, then their competitors needing to keep up, we were in! Since the summer of 2003, all musicians everywhere can sell all their music in almost every outlet online. Do you realize how amazing that is? But there was one problem. iTunes wasn't getting back to us. Yahoo, Rhapsody, Napster and the rest were all up and running. But iTunes wasn't returning our signed contract. Was it because I posted my meeting notes? Had I pissed-off Steve Jobs? Nobody at Apple would say anything. It had been months. My musicians were getting impatient and angry. I gave optimistic apologies, but I was starting to get worried, too. A month later, Steve Jobs did a special worldwide simulcast keynote speech about iTunes. People had been criticizing iTunes for having less music than the competition. They had 400,000 songs while Rhapsody and Napster had over 2 million songs. (Over 500,000 of those were from CD Baby.) Four minutes in, he said something that made my pounding heart sink to my burning stomach: “This number could have easily been much higher, if we wanted to let in every song. But we realize that record companies do a great service. They edit! Did you know that if you and I record a song, for $40 we can pay a few of the services to get it on their site, through some intermediaries? We can be on Rhapsody and all these other guys for $40? Well we don't want to let that stuff on our site! So we've had to edit it. And these are 400,000 quality songs.” Whoa! Wow. Steve Jobs just dissed me hard! I'm the only one charging $40. That was me he's referring to! Shit. OK. That's that. Steve changed his mind. No independents on iTunes. You heard the man. I hated the position this put me in. Ever since I started my company in 1998, I had been offering an excellent service. I could make promises and keep them, because I was in full control. Now, for the first time, I had promised something that was out of my control. So it was time to do the right thing, no matter how much it hurt. I decided to refund everybody's $40, with my deepest apologies. With 5000 musicians signed up, that meant I was refunding $200,000. Ouch. Since we couldn't promise anything, I couldn't charge money in good conscience. I removed all mention of iTunes from my site. I removed the $40 cost. I changed the language to say we can't promise anything. I emailed everyone to let them know what had happened. I decided to make it a free service from that point on. The very next day, we got our signed contract back from Apple, along with upload instructions. Unbelievable. We asked, “Why now?”, but got no answer. Whatever. Fucking Apple. We started encoding and uploading immediately. I quietly added iTunes back to the list of companies on our site. But I never again promised a customer that I could do something beyond my full control.
