The old standard returns! It Happened One Year is once again looking at what aired on November 3rd in 1984, checking in over a year since exploring ABC's programming! This time, Sarah & Joe delve into the hard-boiled, sexy, action dramas that were Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Airwolf, and Cover Up! Along the way, much discussion is made about Stacy Keach's mustache, how Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine found himself flying that helicopter, the tragedies and controversies of Cover Up, the poor adult audience subjected to early '80s television, and of course, the glorious return to It Happened One Year of show favorite, Bubba Smith.

The second season brought us two weird new segments: Magic Mongo (in which a goofy genie crashes a bikini beach party) and Bigfoot and Wildboy (in which a Sasquatch and a kid with no pants battle aliens and Peter Brady). The show was still hosted by wacky rock band Kaptain Kool and the Kongs, and we also review their appearances on American Bandstand, Donny and Marie, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, and a Saturday Morning preview special with the Bay City Rollers. Of course our favorite Kaptain Kool and the Kongs member is Superchick, played by Debra Clinger, and we conclude our look at Debra's career beyond the Krofft world. Debra appeared on classic 70s/80s TV series like Barnaby Jones, The Hardy Boys, The Love Boat, and Hart to Hart. She starred in her own short-lived series The American Girls, alongside a future Three's Company star. She starred in the silly cult classic movie Midnight Madness, alongside a very young Michael J. What do you get when two old Battlestar Galactia alumni get together to make a comic book. Turns out, not at all what you might expect. I got a chance to catch up with Mark Verheiden and Aaron Douglas to hear all about their new Dark Horse Comics project, Borealis. I was initially drawn to it from the native and supernatural elements alone but this is a big story with lots of overlapping narratives. Pulling in the talented team of Cliff Richards to handle the art duties and colored deftly by Guy Major (both of which have names one might find in credits from Airwolf or something,) this is a book that comes off as surprisingly urban given its very remote setting in rural Alaska. I honestly have no idea how they are going to wrap the initial arc up in three issues but I'm sticking around to find out. Issue 2 is out in stores next week. Learn more about your ad choices. We're kicking the new year off with the movie that has explosions, stunts on stunts and as much fun as you would expect from Hall Needham and Burt Reynolds in the late 70's!Friend of mine and fan of the pod, Cole was talking to me one day and was looking for a film recommendation. I asked what kinds of movies he liked. Action comedies with killer stunts ( I mean who doesn't love that?) came up. You can't go much further then the classic “Hooper” with a wonderful love letter to the stunt and film world from the legend himself, Hal Needham, when he and Burt Reynolds were at the height of their powers. So I brought Cole on the show to talk about it. Turns out he's a huge Jan Micheal Vincent fan, so not only was this such a treat to watch, but a blast to research. Murder by Decree is a 1979 mystery thriller directed by Bob Clark (Director of ‘Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things' and 'Dead of Night' (not the brilliant black and white British film from 1945 - featured in episode 13, but the 1974 American film ), he also directed ‘Black Christmas', ‘Porkys' and ‘Porkys 2' Murder by Decree was written by playwright John Hopkins, who scripted the Bond film Thunderball, and the Alec Guinness TV version of Smileys People. Hopkins referenced Conan Doyle's work, particularly Holmes' deduction and science skills but downplayed other aspects of the characters, such as Holmes' drug use, in favour of making them more likeable and human.Peter O'Toole was originally cast as Sherlock Holmes, and Sir Laurence Olivier was cast as Dr. Watson. But the two actors had not worked well together in the past, and were unable to overcome their differences for this movie. Rather, Holmes is played by Christopher (Captain Georg von Trapp) Plummer and Dr. Watson is played by James Mason.Plummer, described by IMDB as“ perhaps Canada's greatest thespian”, turned down the role of Gandalf in Sir Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and admits to regretting that decision. Question for James and Jon? Christopher Plummer had two roles in common with Peter Cushing, can you name them?James Mason reportedly, he once saved the life of Max Bygraves' son at a party at Judy Garland's house. The boy fell into the pool and Max did not notice. James Mason did and, fully clothed, he jumped into the water and pulled him out. He was scheduled to play James Bond in a 1958 television adaptation of "From Russia with Love", which was ultimately never produced. Later, despite being in his 50s, Mason was a contender to play Bond in Dr. No before Sean Connery was cast.
