Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Marc-David Munk, MD, MPH, author of "Urgent Calls from Distant Places: An Emergency Doctor's Notes about Life and Death on the Frontiers of East Africa," for joining me on this episode of The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner! He's an unusual doctor who wrote an amazing book! While in college, Dr. Munk began his medical career as an emergency medical technician. His interest in saving lives evolved into an academic career in emergency medicine. Overwhelmed by an imperfect healthcare system that rewarded productivity at the expense of quality, Dr. Munk volunteered for the AMREF Flying Doctors program in East Africa in 2008. He returned for another year in 2012. Years later, Dr. Munk delved into his journal to write a thoughtful documentary of his time with the Flying Doctors. The stories include life-saving adventures and his response to the widespread health inequities of East Africa. He recounts these experiences in astonishing detail in his book, "Urgent Calls from Distant Places." These exotic volunteer experiences spurred Dr. Munk's further education and practice. He obtained an advanced degree in healthcare management and worked with healthcare models that respect the physician-patient relationship. Currently, Dr. Munk works as a palliative care physician at an academic center in Boston. Thanks! Many thanks to Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD, a facial plastic surgeon with a Park Avenue practice a block and a half from Central Park in New York City. Dr. Vasyukevich specializes in rejuvenation rather than reconstructive surgery. In addition to facelifts and other surgeries, he also offers Botox and fillers. These strategies serve to make people look younger and improve their confidence and self-perception. There's no medical indication. During our 25-minute discussion, Dr. Vasyukevich answered all of my questions about plastic surgery and even did a free consultation! Apparently, should I be so inclined, multiple fixes are available for my well-worn visage! Dr. Vasyukevich has patients who come to see him from all over the world, including Australia and Indonesia. Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Franklyn Rocha, MD, a fellow neurologist and with an unusual locum tenens practice. He is a clinical neurophysiologist and neurohospitalist consultant and Chief Executive Officer/Owner of IRD Neuroanalysis, Inc. Dr. Rocha does in-person neurology consults at Harbor-UCLA Hospital near his home but primarily works as a telemedicine physician from the first floor of his townhouse! Dr. Rocha is also a new father of a healthy, bouncing, baby boy. Prior to his son's birth, Frank had been thinking a lot about fatherhood. He published an essay on KevinMD.com about how difficult it can be for physician fathers to be physically present with a newborn. He cites academic demands, peer pressure from other physicians, lack of paid paternal leave, and the tradition of putting patients first as formidable obstacles that discourage new physician fathers from taking parental leave. It's clear that Frank intends to be a successful physician and entrepreneur, but he also didn't want to miss out on the unique experience of fatherhood. During our 30-minute podcast, Frank explained how owning his own business and working telemedicine allowed him to spend nearly four months of parental leave with his wife and newborn son. For physicians with the added challenge of a special needs child, parenting demands are even greater. For these physicians, David Hirsch's “Special Father's Network” offers valuable resources. Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Evan Glazer, MD, a colleague at Regional One Health in Memphis, TN, part of the University of Tennessee Health Science (UTHSC) system. Dr. Glazer is a practicing surgical oncologist and Associate Professor of Surgery at UTHSC. He also received Memphis Magazine's 2024 Innovator Award. During our 25-minute conversation, Dr. Glazer described the extensive training that led to his current position as a surgical oncologist at Regional One Health. He completed four years of college, four years of medical school, five years of general surgery residency, two years of a research fellowship on liver and pancreas cancer, and then two years of clinical fellowship at the Moffit Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, a total of 17 years of training! Dr. Glazer is now a Board-Certified Surgical Oncologist. Dr. Glazer explained that in the US, general surgeons provide most surgical cancer care. However, some cases are complex and require additional skills, which is where a surgical oncologist can step in. Surgical oncologists routinely operate on cancer patients, which gives them a level of experience and expertise not always possessed by general surgeons. Dr. Glazer explained how advances in neuroimaging, including CT, MRI, and PET scans, have aided surgeons by better identifying anatomical structures that vary from patient to patient. Collaboration between medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and others can lead to optimal clinical results. Cancer is not always a "death sentence" as it used to be. To learn more, please watch on YouTube or listen on your favorite streaming device! She toughed it out during her chemotherapy, employing the determination and resilience that made her a Division 1 basketball player years ago. Her competitive nature and resolve were buttressed by strong Catholic Faith. Ronnie believes that her life experiences prior to her breast cancer diagnosis were God's “perfect preparation” that endowed her with the necessary skills to successfully navigate her illness. Ronnie explained that she wrote her books to help other people with breast cancer better understand how it affects their bodies and provide strategies to succeed with treatment. Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Jessi Gold, MD, MS, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Chief Wellness Officer of the University of Tennessee, and author of the new book, “How Do You Feel?” Dr. Gold is the Wellness Officer for the 5 campuses of the University of Tennessee and its more than 60,000 students and almost 20,000 faculty and staff. During our 45-minute discussion, she related the history behind the adoption of “wellness” as a responsibility of institutions like universities and hospitals. She also explored how the relatively new concept of “work/life balance” can create tension in the workplace and paradoxically hinder students, residents, and faculty from achieving “wellness.” During COVID, Dr. Gold practiced psychiatry and saw first-hand how the pandemic brought her seriously ill mental health patients and affected her personally. One result of this experience was her new book, “How Do You Feel?” Part memoir and part COVID-health-care-worker-mental-health-chronicle, Dr. Gold shares the stories of four of her patients as well as her own. Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Cameron Sabet, a second-year medical student at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. Cameron has a deep and insightful view into healthcare as evidenced by his early efforts as an EMT, articles in Time Magazine, The Washington Post, The Daily Mail, multiple peer-reviewed medical publications, and his work with Venture Capital. Cameron's busy studying for his final exams, but I stole him away for this fascinating 25-minute interview. During our discussion, Cameron discussed his background as an EMT and how it gave him real-life insight into some of the mundane but fundamental challenges of health care delivery. Cameron articulated how journalism is a powerful medium for influencing individuals and public policy. He also illustrated how financial incentives influence healthcare delivery. He also observed that spiritual sensitivities of different ethnic and religious populations must be addressed in order to improve quality of care and bolster faith in the health care system. Rob is here today to speak about the fundamental importance of an effective health care system to every individual and some of the ways the US healthcare system can be improved. During our 40-minute discussion, we discussed the complex landscape of healthcare in the US that tends to separate physicians and other providers from their patients. Rob estimated that 30% of the money spent in our healthcare system goes to people who are not directly involved in patient care, and “that's too much.”During our interview, Rob described how the HTA lowers overhead and improves outcomes by focusing on education, prevention and removing barriers to prescription and provider access. Please click "Fanmail" and share your feedback! If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to David Weill, MD, former Director of the Center for Advanced Lung Diseases and the Lung and Heart-Lung Transplant Program at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Weill is the author of the new novel “All That Really Matters” and the memoir “Exhale”. He's working on a 3rd book to be published next year. I read “All That Really Matters” and couldn't put it down. Although I am not a transplant surgeon like the protagonist, we definitely shared some similar experiences during our training and early careers. The novel leads us through the complex world of organ transplants, with the author as an expert guide. Even those without a medical background will have no difficulty following the plot and may perhaps identify with a character or two. Dr. Weill told me that the novel was a vehicle that allowed him explore the moral and ethical issues involved in human organ transplant. During our 30-minute discussion, Dr. Weill filled me in on his 20 years of life-saving organ transplant work. Although immensely gratifying, this 24/7 activity wreaked havoc on his work/life balance. Finally, Dr. Weill left his position as Director of the Transplant Program at Stanford to become Principal of the Weill Consulting Group, which focuses on improving the delivery of pulmonary, ICU, and transplant care. This transition allowed him to move back to his hometown of New Orleans, continue to help improve the transplant system, and provided an opportunity for him to write. During our interview, we also discussed the practicalities and rewards of writing fiction, his long-term goals, and how he gets the writing done. It was indeed a pleasure interviewing David Weill! Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Renee Fleming, Grammy Award Winner, recipient of the National Medal of Arts, and renowned soprano who has brought the experience of classical music to millions of fans. In 2023, the World Health Organization appointed her as Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health. Renee is also the editor of a new book: "Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness." During our 20-minute discussion, Renee discusses her upbringing in a musical household. Her parents were high school voice teachers, and it was natural for her to sing and learn to play a musical instrument. As time passed, she became more passionate about learning to sing. Other than music, she stated that her only other career choice was to become the First Lady President of the United States! But it wasn't until her late 20s that she discovered she had a "beautiful" voice. When she had somatic pain that impaired her singing, she discovered that scientists were studying music and the brain. After a discussion with Frances Collins of the National Institutes of Health, she curated the book, "Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness." Renee has become a cheerleader for the scientific study of music and the concept that "the arts should be embedded in healthcare." Renee Fleming also wrote another book, "The Inner Voice," about learning to sing. It guides young singers and their families through the process of becoming a professional singer. Yoshi is also the author and illustrator of the new patient education book, "The Spine Encyclopedia: Everything You've Wanted to Know about Back and Neck Pain But Were Afraid to Ask." To help educate his patients, Yoshi wrote a series of pamphlets about specific spine problems. Eventually, these turned into "The Spine Encyclopedia." A hefty tome, it's not meant to be read cover to cover but rather as a reference for patients who may suffer from neck or back pain and are considering a surgical solution. Many thanks to Christina Gomez, MD, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Phoenix, AZ, and author of the new book "Stopped in My Tracks." Dr. Gomez attended medical school, residency, and fellowship at the University of Miami. During her fellowship year, she found herself scribbling pertinent and poignant quotes from her discussions with cancer patients in the exam room. She continued this habit for 15 years and recently published this unique collection in a book, "Stopped in My Tracks." Dr. Gomez and I had a deep conversation about the intimate nature of the patient-physician relationship, advances in cancer treatment, the art of listening carefully to patients, and helping people live with cancer if a cure is not forthcoming. Dr. Gomez's passion for patient care illuminates this 30-minute interview. She was a joy to speak with, and I'm sure you will enjoy her book, "Stopped in My Tracks." Thanks for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." My special guest today is Bill Martin, CFA, Chief Wealth Officer at Earned Wealth. During this 30-minute program, we discuss the unique and sometimes challenging financial situation of physicians. For example, although doctors may be relatively high earners, because of lengthy postgraduate training programs that can last up to 7 years after medical school, doctors may not start earning high salaries until much later than their nonphysician peers. In addition, they are often saddled with enormous college and medical school debt. Bill explains his approach to helping physicians optimize their investments and savings to ultimately achieve “financial wellness.” He contrasts wealth managers who operate as “fiduciaries” versus “brokers.” He also defines the designations “CFP” and “CFA.” Bill is the author of “The Smart Financial Advisor,” which offers tips to his colleagues about employing financial technology and goals-based investing. Bill explained that Earned Wealth offers several tiers of service. The first one is a free financial planning app, available at your app store. On Apple, it's easy to find with a large green “E” at “Earned.” The next tier is an in-depth financial overview available for a one-time fee. If applicable, Earned Wealth offers a number of ongoing financial services for physicians who choose to become regular clients. I think you'll enjoy listening to Bill explain a little bit about financial services and how they may apply to your situation. You can contact Bill through Earned Wealth:http://www.earnedwealth.comFor our listeners, Earned Wealth is offering $500 towards your Wealth Diagnostic with code ArtOfMed. Many thanks to Bradley B. Block, MD, for speaking with me today on “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” Dr. Block is an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist in Garden City, New York. Recently, Brad was kind enough to interview me on his podcast, “Physician's Guide to Doctoring.” We talked about one of my favorite topics, locum tenens and my book, “The Locum Life: A Physician's Guide to Locum Tenens.” Today, Dr. Block shares his tips for avoiding burnout in private practice. For example, Dr. Block greets patients and the people they bring with them, looking long and hard enough “to notice their eye color.” I was impressed to learn that his medical group has a “patient experience” committee, which demonstrates their commitment to improving the patient/doctor experience. Further, his group is owned and run by physicians who easily understand and prioritize their colleagues' values. Please tune in to our 30-minute discussion to learn more ways to run a compassionate and efficient private practice. As a bonus, we also chat about my ENT experience and the cool reassuring diagnosis I got of “presbylarnyx”-oh no! We spend a lot of time on this podcast discussing the business of medicine, which is terribly important. In the most recent episode (#98), for example, I discussed NALTO, the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations with Tanika Williams and Olivia D'Angelo. However, just as important is the art of medicine. That's why I'm delighted that Dr. Richard Berlin has joined the show today. Dr. Berlin is a published poet who just retired from clinical medicine. Dr. Berlin has been passionate about poetry since childhood and is still in touch with his 10th-grade teacher who taught poetry. Several singer-songwriters of the '60s, like Bob Dylan, were also inspirations. But it wasn't until mid-life that he became a serious writer. Although there was never enough time to write when he worked full-time, he tried to "read a lot and write a lot." Dr. Berlin sees many parallels between writing poetry and the practice of medicine. During our 35-minute interview, we discussed an author we both admire, Richard Selzer, MD. Dr. Selzer was one of the first contemporary physician-authors in the US. As a successful physician/writer, he became a role model for me and Dr. Berlin. Dr. Berlin started our program by reading a poem he wrote while staying in a cabin on Monhegan Island in Maine. To learn how a lobsterman's trained eye resembles a physician's, please listen to our program! "How JFK Killed My Father" is Dr. Berlin's first book of poetry, available on Amazon:https://amzn.to/3R2vOpe. He has several other books and more books on the way. Dr. Berlin has also published poetry at Psychiatric Times for the last 25 years:https://www.psychiatrictimes.com/view/25-years-of-poetry-of-the-timesDr. Berlin can be reached at his website: HTTP://www.richardmberlin.comIf you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. Many thanks to Tanika Williams and Olivia D'Angelo for speaking with me today on “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” Both Tanika and Olivia work for Jackson and Coker, a major staffing agency for physicians and advanced care providers who work locum tenens. As many of you know, I've been doing locums off and on since 1982. I even wrote a book about it, “The Locum Life: A Physician's Guide to Locum Tenens.”Tanika and Olivia volunteer at NALTO, the National Association of Locums Tenens Organizations. Tanika works on the NALTO legislative and conference committee. She just returned from lobbying in Washington, D.C. where she educated lawmakers about locum tenens and advocated for the Healthcare Provider Shortage Minimization Act. Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine. I'm your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner. Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Jon Appino, Principal and Founder of Contract Diagnostics. Jon's been running Contract Diagnostics for more than 10 years, helping physicians analyze and negotiate their contracts with respect to salary, benefits, and covenants. Jon grew up in a medical family. In college, he was a biology and biochemistry major and pre-med. Ultimately, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue medically-related business opportunities rather than attending medical school. In this episode, we discuss Jon's motivation and approach to helping physicians achieve the most favorable business contracts. He has had experience with literally thousands of physician contracts. During our discussion, Jon addresses critical features of both locum tenens and permanent contracts. It's been my experience that when push comes to shove at the workplace, it's what written in the contract that really matters. Please watch our 40-minute discussion to hear how John can help determine whether your contract is fair or could be improved. Jon insists that every physician has a “story,” and each contract must be individualized. Jon is a big fan of “The Art of Medicine,” which I really appreciate! Erica also has the REWIRED PROGRAM which is an online educational program available on her website: Ericaspiegelman.com A counselor at one of the most innovative and renowned drug and alcohol treatment centers in the world introduces an empowering approach to addiction recovery that addresses the whole self—mind, body, and spirit This “useful and practical perspective on what you can do to recover from [addiction]” can replace or supplement 12-step programs—at any stage in your recovery (Allen Berger, Ph.D., author of 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery) Rewired is a new, breakthrough approach to fighting addiction and self-damaging behavior by acknowledging our personal power to bring ourselves back from the brink. Centered on the concept of self-actualization, Rewired will guide you towards not only physical sobriety, but a mental, emotional, and spiritual sobriety by learning to identify key principles within yourself, including authenticity, honesty, gratitude, and understanding a need for solitude. Rewired addresses the whole self; just as addiction affects every part of one's life, so too must its treatment. By helping us to build a healthy space to support our own recovery, we can rewrite the negative behaviors that result in addiction. Usable in conjunction with or in place of 12-step programs, Rewired allows for a more holistic approach, helping to create a personalized treatment plan that is right for you. Each section in Rewired includes: • Personal anecdotes from the author's own struggles with alcoholism and addiction • Inspiring true success stories of patients overcoming their addictions • Questions to engage you into finding what is missing from your recovery • Positive affirmations and intentions to guide and motivate With all the variables, both physical and emotional, that play into overcoming addiction, Rewiredenables us to stay strong and positive as we progress on the path to recovery. Rewired teaches patience and compassion, the two cornerstones of a new, humanist approach to curing addiction. Remember, addicts are not broken people that need to be fixed—they just have a few crossed wires.
