Friday marks 20 years since the tragic mass shooting on the Red Lake Nation that left 10 people dead and seven injured. On March 21, 2005, a Red Lake High School student killed five of his classmates, a teacher, the school security guard, his grandfather and his grandfather's partner. The shooter died by a self-inflicted gunshot. At the time, the Red Lake shooting was the largest school shooting in the U.S. since the Columbine massacre.Starr Jourdain was at Red Lake High School on the day of the shooting and now serves as the chair of 3.21.05 Memorial Fund, a memorial group formed by survivors that honors the victims of the shooting. Jourdain joined Minnesota Now to reflect on the 20 years that have passed since the tragedy.
The organization's mission is to provide financial support for people in the ranching cowboy community who experience health and accident-related emergencies that result in the inability to work and provide for their families. Before seeking 501(c)3 status, the individuals forming the Board held two events to raise over $25,000 for two widows who lost their husbands to unexpected health issues. These fundraising events allowed them to cover hospital and funeral expenses that otherwise would have placed them in severe financial distress. This experience created the impetus to formalize the fundraising effort as more instances of need in a community comprised of cowboys, often with little or no health and disability insurance, came to light.

America's Vietnam Veterans didn't come home to parades. They didn't come home to standing ovations. They didn't come home to a welcoming public that embraced what they did overseas. When many of our Vietnam veterans came home, they got spit on. They were told that their uniform was a disgrace, they weren't integrated into society, and many people shunned them.58,281 of our Vietnam veterans never came home at all. Queens, NY bore more than its share of service and of loss. In September, Fran Racioppi had the chance to welcome home our Vietnam Veterans and all those who served from New York when the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund brought the Wall That Heals to New York City.A 3/4 replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the wall comes to those who can't make it to DC. After the police escort, building the wall and the opening ceremony, Fran sat down under the lights with the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Veterans Services James Hendon, Chairman of the New York City Council Veterans Committee Bob Holden, Vietnam Veterans Association National President John Rowan, and Tony Nunciato, one of New York City's bravest veteran families, having lost his brother and Aniello in Vietnam. They talked about the struggles our Vietnam Veterans faced when they returned, how America's institutions weren't ready for so many who had seen so much, how many of them answered the call to lead in politics and set the foundation for small business and our economy, and what NYC is doing to support Veterans of every generation. Freedom's never free. It wasn't in the past, it isn't now, and it won't be in the future. To all our Vietnam veterans, thank you and welcome home. Learn more on The Jedburgh Podcast Website. Amid all the grumblings about law enforcement over the years, there have been bright spots of support, which can be hard to see among all the negative chatter. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, sponsored by OfficerStore.com, host Jim Dudley speaks with Craig W. Floyd, founder and president of Citizens Behind the Badge (CBB), a nonprofit advocacy organization formed in 2020 to end the disastrous “defund and defame the police” movement and ensure that our nation's law enforcement professionals receive the support and respect needed and deserved to keep America safe. Today's show is a special one as my better half, Denise Sprung, is my guest. Denise is the Chair of the Keith Milano Memorial Fund at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Keith died by suicide at just 27. Today would've been his 46th Birthday. Share how he made you smile, how generous he was, and talk about his laugh. For those that didn't have the pleasure of knowing Keith, hopefully today's show will shed light on who he was and the incredible impact he has had on others in this conversation about mental health. This is the hardest episode I've ever recorded, but it's deeply important to me to show up for you authentically. Usually, that's as the "happiness and joy" podcaster, but I now also need to honor when I'm in a season that's heavy and grief-filled. Because I'm learning that joy and grief are two sides of the same coin, and they're both part of our human experience. So I'm going to hold space within me, and here on the podcast, for both.So it's in David's memory, and to honor all that he taught me, that I record this episode for him, for me, and for you today. I'm still deeply in this season of grief, but there are beautiful things I learned from David that I feel are important to share. Things like embracing the current moment, enjoying the simple pleasures of life, and how we're all capable of sharing love.If after listening, you too want to support David's Memorial Fund at the Naples Zoo, you're welcome to do so at https://www.napleszoo.org/donate with a note that it's "In memory of David Freyhof." With infinite love, I bring this episode to you, friend.

Tiffany Yu is passionate about supporting parents of tube-fed children, and she does so by providing awareness of adaptive equipment and accessories along with helpful tips and tricks — all borne out of the love for her child, Magnus. Magnus was small but his legacy is mighty; he built an empire of his own in the short time he was alive. Sadly, and unexpectedly, Magnus passed away only 17 days after our interview. We discuss Tiffany's passion project of Tubie2Go, normalizing tube feeding, among many other aspects of caring for children with complex needs, especially with respect to those who are undiagnosed. She shares with us how hard life can be caring for children like Magnus but just how incredibly lifechanging and heart warming it can be to anyone who is open to letting children like him into their lives. Magnus' star can be found at: 7h 53m 13.16s13° 1' 55.35" Please consider supporting other families of tube-fed children in through Tubie2Go. Check out this heartwarming video of Magnus dancing with his sister, Kylee. Donations to Magnus' Memorial Fund can be made here.

This week, we're tackling a big topic: Christianity! We talk about our own experiences with, or without, religion in our lives and how we feel about it today. We also explore the possibility of being LGBTQ+ identifying AND Christian. This week we're also joined by self-proclaimed gay progressive Christian, Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons. Guthrie is here to chat about his experience identifying as both Christian and Queer, as well as the direction Christianity is going and what that means for LGBTQ+ people. We also chat about the American Republican Party and their recent attacks on Trans Youth (in sports especially) in the name of “fairness” and religion. *Technical Note: this was our first attempt at a 2 mic setup and was actually recorded prior to episodes 10 and 11, so forgive us if anything sounds off this week!* BUY GUTHRIE'S NEW BOOK HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Just-Faith-Reclaiming-Progressive-Christianity/dp/1506462529 CONNECT W/ GUTHRIE: https://www.instagram.com/GuthrieGF/ https://twitter.com/guthriegf/ CONNECT W/ US: https://instagram.com/2servingspod EMAIL US: 2servingspod@gmail.com DAUNTE WRIGHT SR. Daunte Wright was fatally shot by a police officer in Minneapolis - just miles away from where George Floyd was murdered by police almost a year ago. This week there will be no podcast episodes or weekly circles. I will be taking this time to further educate myself and free up space for black voices.
