Jeanette dePalma har försvunnit från förorten Springfield i New Jersey utanför New York. George Vecsey has been writing about sports for the past 60 years—mostly about baseball, and soccer, and tennis, but also about hockey, and basketball, and football, and boxing. (Have we missed anything?) He wrote the Sports of the Times column for The New York Times for nearly 30 years, until his "retirement" in 2011, although he continues to contribute to the newspaper on a regular basis. Like many of his sportswriter colleagues, he started "ghostwriting" on behalf of celebrated personalities as a kind of sideline pursuit. Perhaps his most successful collaboration was his work with country music icon Loretta Lynn. Coal Miner's Daughter, which was later turned into a movie starring Sissy Spacek. (There's a terrific audio version of the book, read by the actress you can find at Libro.fm) Among his other collaborations are books with tennis great Martina Navratilova (Martina), Cy Young-award winner Bob Welch (Five O'Clock Comes Early), country singer Barbara Mandrell (Get to the Heart) and Chinese dissident Harry Wu (Troublemaker). He's also written several books of his own, including a distillation of the life and times of Baseball HOFer Stan Musial (Stan Musial: An American Life), and a compelling appreciation of the World Cup (Eight World Cups: My Journey Through the Beauty and Dark Side of Soccer). Oh, and he's also the author of Joy in Mudville: Being a Complete Account of the Unparalleled History of the New York Mets from Their most Perturbed Beginnings to Their Amazing Rise to Glory and Renown, which in addition to boasting one of the best subtitles on the sports bookshelf was also the very first hardcover book owned by podcast host Daniel Paisner, who counts his (now signed!) first edition copy as one of his most treasured literary keepsakes. So, you know, there's that... Learn more about George Vecsey: Website Facebook Twitter Please support the sponsors who support our show. SHAUN CLANCY conceded to the coronavirus's devastation and closed Foley's on May 29. We speak about the pub's popularity among baseball-industry folks and fans, and also its fall, joined by some special guests: MLB executive TYRONE BROOKS; Tampa Bay Rays broadcaster DAVE WILLS; retired N.Y. Times columnist GEORGE VECSEY; and Daily News reporter KRISTIE ACKERT, Clancy's significant other.
Joined today by author and New York Times sports columnist, the great George Vecsey. George and I talk fondly of our adopted state of Kentucky and then jump right into his book “Baseball: A History of America’s Favorite Game”. We chat about George growing up in Brooklyn/Queens and his adoration for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and hear about his first memories of the game and what made him fall in love with it. We talk about the plight of Jackie Robinson and what he went through and the reaction of other players as he broke the color barrier. I express my love for Babe Ruth and we talk about what he meant to the game. We hear about the difficulties of writing a book about the history of baseball and what was the one thing he regrets not adding to this book. Mr. Vecsey and I talk about the current state of baseball with the Astros cheating scandal, his New York Mets and his dislike for the Bronx Bombers. From interviewing the Dalai Lama to sitting down with Tony Blair, and hanging out with Muhammed Ali, it’s always an honor to speak to a national treasure. Veteran sports journalist George Vecsey finally gives this twenty-time All-Star and St. Louis Cardinals icon the biographical treatment he deserves. Stan Musial is the definitive portrait of one of the game’s best-loved but most unappreciated legends—told through the remembrances of those who played beside, worked with, and covered “Stan the Man” over the course of his nearly seventy years in the national spotlight. Away from the diamond, Musial proved a savvy businessman and a model of humility and graciousness toward his many fans in St. Louis and around the world. From Keith Hernandez’s boyhood memories of Musial leaving tickets for him when the Cardinals were in San Francisco to the little-known story of Musial’s friendship with novelist James Michener, Vecsey weaves an intimate oral history around one of the great gentlemen of baseball’s Greatest Generation.
