In a 2011 piece for the AV Club, music critic Steven Hyden defined a new metric for musical greatness: the five-albums test. An artist passes this test if they release at least five consecutive masterful albums. According to Hyden, very few artists pass this test. The Beatles do. So do Queen. That said, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones come up short. Inspired by Mr. Hyden, I want to propose a test of musical greatness that is even more stringent: the 40-year test.As a reminder, this is the podcast version of the newsletter Can't Get Much Higher. LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 3, 2024) — Cierra Couch, a representative of the University of Kentucky May Class of 2024, is a first-generation college student who came to UK in 2020 with a strong sense of determination, but without a clear roadmap. As a Robinson Scholar from Hyden, Kentucky, Couch instantly found community through like-minded peers who were also from Eastern Kentucky. As time went on, she began to curate her college journey through resources like UK's Stuckert Career Center, Student Support Services and her first-generation advisor. These services helped Couch first learn about the multitude of opportunities in the field of social work. But it was later in her academic journey when Couch stepped into a UK student involvement fair, where, by chance, she learned about Alternative Spring Breaks (ASB), a program that connects UK students to service and learning opportunities across the U.S. and around the world. After becoming involved in ASB, Couch discovered a passion for social work and working with immigrant and refugee populations. But perhaps Couch's most transformative experience happened through Explore First —  an education abroad program designed and implemented intentionally to equip and empower first-generation students at UK, like Couch. She was part of the inaugural cohort of students to take part in this trailblazing program, which launched in the summer of 2023. Students traveled to London and Dublin for a three-week course, which emphasized career readiness within a global context. Couch says this experience helped her solidify her career goal to work in global social work. On this episode of “Behind the Blue,” Couch reflects on her time at UK, her experience with the Explore First program and what's next after she walks across the Commencement stage this Friday with her social work degree.  "Behind the Blue" is available on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. In this compelling podcast episode, speakers Randy Hyden and Brad Singletary delve into the transformative power of intrinsic motivation and community support in overcoming addictions and compulsive behaviors. Randy discusses his upcoming e-book that tackles overthinking, linking it to emotions and actionable solutions. He emphasizes that recovery and self-improvement can't be extrinsically motivated; doing it to appease others or to escape legal consequences will not yield lasting change. He poses the vital question: "Do you really want to stop doing this, or do you just really want the consequences to stop?" This sets the stage for the core argument that true transformation comes from a deeply rooted desire for a 'new life,' separate from external pressures. Brad complements this by asking what advice would be given to someone on the fence about making life-altering changes. The conclusion is unequivocal: If one truly wishes to reinvent themselves, self-inquiry, self-observation, and the guidance of emotionally healthy individuals—who are not there to 'fix' but to 'walk alongside'—become crucial components for sustainable change. This episode is a call for authentic, self-driven transformation, fortified by communal wisdom and love. Ever since Pearl Jam first blasted onto the Seattle grunge scene three decades ago with their debut album, Ten, they have sold 85M+ albums, performed for hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, and have even been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack of A Generation, music critic and journalist Steven Hyden celebrates the life, career, and music of this legendary group, widely considered to be one of the greatest American rock bands of all time. Long Road is structured like a mix tape, using 18 different Pearl Jam classics as starting points for telling a mix of personal and universal stories. Each chapter tells the tale of this great band -- how they got to where they are, what drove them to greatness, and why it matters now. Much like the generation it emerged from, Pearl Jam is a mass of contradictions. They were an enormously successful mainstream rock band who felt deeply uncomfortable with the pursuit of capitalistic spoils. They were progressive activists who spoke in favor of abortion rights and against the Ticketmaster monopoly, and yet they epitomized the sound of traditional, male-dominated rock 'n' roll. They were looked at as spokesmen for their generation, even though they ultimately projected profound confusion and alienation. They triumphed, and failed, in equal doses -- the quintessential Gen-X tale. Impressive as their stats, accolades, and longevity may be, Hyden also argues that Pearl Jam's most definitive accomplishment lies in the impact their music had on Generation X as a whole. Pearl Jam's music helped an entire generation of listeners connect with the glory of bygone rock mythology, and made it relevant during a period in which tremendous American economic prosperity belied a darkness at the heart of American youth. More than just a chronicle of the band's career, this book is also a story about Gen- X itself, who like Pearl Jam came from angsty, outspoken roots and then evolved into an establishment institution, without ever fully shaking off their uncertain, outsider past. For so many Gen-Xers growing up at the time, Pearl Jam's music was a beacon that offered both solace and guidance. They taught an entire generation how to grow up without losing the purest and most essential parts of themselves. Written with his celebrated blend of personal memoir, criticism, and journalism, Hyden explores Pearl Jam's path from Ten to now. It's a chance for new fans and old fans alike to geek out over Pearl Jam minutia--the B-sides, the beloved deep cuts, the concert bootlegs--and explore the multitude of reasons why Pearl Jam's music resonated with so many people. As Hyden explains, "Most songs pass through our lives and are swiftly forgotten. But Pearl Jam is forever." Steven Hyden is the author of This Isn't Happening, Twilight of the Gods, Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me, and (with Steve Gorman) Hard to Handle. Finally the end of the Vietnam War. Richard Nixon had negotiated an honorable peace with the assurances that we would continue to help the South Vietnamese  to be able to defend themselves from any aggression from the North.  When that aggression came President Gerald Ford did all he could to honor that pledge but the Congress cut off all funding and disallowed our President to even provide arial support for the South Vietnamese. On April, 30, 1975, the North Vietnamese Communist troops rolled into Saigon and the American Embassy was evacuated.  The military did all they could to get our friends out of the country, for 14 hours it airlifted thousands of Vietnamese to safety out of the country before our Ambassador flew out on a helicopter. The Marines then locked the place up and left the American Embassy to the communist forces that from the air could be seen in the streets of Saigon. It was finally over, and the peace Richard Nixon had worked so hard to attain, that Lyndon Johnson had sacrificed his career to attain, and more importantly, over 58,000 Americans had died for, was lost. It was a shameful hour in American history. Though I believe that we bought the time for the rest of Southeast Asia to gather the strength to fend off Communism's high tide. A belief shared with former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. Then the episode moves on to the next chapter in the life of Richard Nixon. He re-emerges in 1978 with a 28 hour interview with TV Host David Frost. It would be the one and only time Richard Nixon would be cross examined about his time in office and his role in Watergate. It was an extraordinary set of interviews in which the President held his own. He was asked tough questions and explained himself just fine. He also gave the American People his own apology for the way he dealt with the scandal. It is an amazing set of interviews and I invite you all to tune in for yourselves, many are available on YOUTUBE for viewing, or you can buy the DVD box set here:https://www.amazon.com/Frost-Nixon-Watergate-Interviews-Remastered/dp/B001GZ6Q1KFinally we take you to the tiny town of Hyden, Kentucky, where a community from the heartland of America decided to honor the President that was "One of Us" , not an elitist, not a Washington Insider, but a man who as a national leader had championed the forgotten Americans, the non shouters, the non demonstrators, the great silent majority of Americans that , as President,  Richard Nixon had never forgotten and always looked out to protect, and now it was they who were opening the door for him to return to the national stage again.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Along the way, they break down tracks including “The Year Clayton Delany Died”, “Trip to Hyden” and “A Million Miles to the City” and talk about Hall's songwriting research trips, how he broke his own songwriting rules, the difference between poetry and song lyrics and why you shouldn't waste time complaining about music you hate.

When Japandroids released their sophomore album Celebration Rock in 2012, fans and critics alike weren't expecting such a strong follow-up to their revered debut album, Post-Nothing. Now revisiting Celebration Rock ten years later, Indiecast hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen reflect on the album's legacy and how Japandroids successfully embraced old school rock clichés (29:51).Speaking of veteran indie musicians, Wilco released their new album Cruel Country this week (1:08). It's an album the band essentially recorded live and has quickly become one of Hyden's favorite Wilco projects in the last 10 years. Perhaps the most talked-about song this week was Sky Ferriera's "Don't Forget," (10:15) which marked her second single in nine years. Elsewhere in the episode, Indiecast talk standout movie soundtracks (20:39) and yet another Conor Oberst mishap (15:10).In this week's Recommendation Corner (54:38), Ian spotlights Sweet Pill's new album Where The Heart Is. Steven gives a shout out to Dehd's fourth album Blue Skies, which shows the band's progression to polished songwriting.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
