Henry Harrison Mayes wasn't a preacher in a pulpit or a theologian in a seminary; he was a coal miner with a profound sense of purpose. Born in the Appalachian heartland of Tennessee in 1898, his life was shaped by faith, hard work, and an unrelenting determination to share the Christian message. What set him apart was not his profession but his unique mission to spread the gospel. Through concrete crosses, hand-carved markers, and even messages in bottles, Mayes carried his faith to highways, rivers, and communities across the United States. His story is one of resilience, creativity, and unwavering devotion—an ordinary man with an extraordinary mission. In 1949, one of Australia's largest industrial actions took place when coal miners staged a well-planned strike. Beginning in June and lasting nearly seven weeks, the strike involved more than 23,000 workers protesting poor wages and dangerous working conditions in the coal mines. Coal was a critical energy resource post-World War II, and the strike brought industries and households across the nation to a standstill, causing significant economic and social disruption.Join Holly & Matthew as they unearth the tensions, key players, and ramifications of the 1949 Coal Miners' Strike, exploring its profound legacy on Australian industrial relations.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weird-crap-in-australia--2968350/support.
Following the story of country musician Loretta Lynn, Coal Miner's Daughter is much more than your average music biopic. On this episode of the podcast Phillip is joined once again by A.C. Nickolas to talk about Nashville Girl from 1976. Around this time Coal Miner's Daughter and Nashville were big hits so why not cash in. This is better than a knock off and stars Switchblade Sister's Patch herself, Monica Gayle. She does great in this. Phillip and A.C. start the show by going through the general information about the movie with some facts thrown in. It's then time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Then Phillip and A.C. dive in and discuss this movie, and it's a fun conversation. They then answer the question of what Tarantino might have liked or used in a film from this movie. It's then time to individually rate the movie. Phillip and A.C. then answer the question of whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. Then Phillip gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; Warlords of the 21st Century (1982). Then Phillip and A.C. talk about their favorite parts of Season 2 of Making Tarantino: The Podcast. A.C. then gives some movie recommendations; Dial Code: Santa Clause AKA Deadly Games (1989), Silent Partner (1978), and Repeat Performance (1947). Phillip then talks about how he will be taking a month off, but will be back February 7th with the season 3 premiere of the podcast. Until then every Friday through January will be episodes of Phil's old podcast called My Celluloid Heart. January 3rd will be Sweet Revenge: Nevada Smith (1966) & Murphy's War (1971) where Phil will be joined by his father. Thanks for listening.
Matewan (written and directed by John Sayles) dramatizes the events of the Battle of Matewan, a coal miners' strike in 1920 in a small town in the hills of West Virginia. In the film, Joe Kenehan (Chris Cooper, in his film debut), an ex-Wobbly organizer for the United Mine Workers (also known as the “Wobblies”), arrives in Matewan, to organize miners against the Stone Mountain Coal Company. Kenehan and his supporters must battle the company's use of scabs and outright violence, resist the complicity of law enforcement in the company's tactics, and overcome the racism and xenophobia that helps divide the labor movement. Sayles's film provides a window into the legal and social issues confronting the labor movement in the early twentieth century and into the Great Coalfield War of that period. I'm joined by Fred B. Jacob, Solicitor of the National Labor Relations Board and labor law professor at George Washington University Law School. This is my classic talk with Beverly D'Angelo. Bev and I were texting last week and decided it's time to record a new talk, especially since she's been up to a lot since we first recorded this talk in 2019. But we're having some trouble coordinating our schedules, so I'm running this one now because it's a fun one with juicy stories and it's entirely possible we won't get that new one on the books anytime soon. And since Bev's ex, Al Pacino, who's also the father of her twins, has a new memoir out, called Sonny Boy, I thought, yeah, let's also hear from Bev, who has quite a few stories of her own. National Lampoon's Vacation turned actress Beverly D'Angelo into an American icon. She played Ellen Griswold, Chevy Chase's wife, of course. But that's just part of the story. I sit down with Bev at her Los Angeles home to talk about all the other things in her life. (And let's not forget Annie Hall, Any Which Way But Loose, Coal Miner's Daughter, Entourage, Shooter, Insatiable, etc., but more on that later.) Yes, we talk about how Vacation happened and how it changed things, and we get into SO MUCH MORE, like: Podcasts (hers + mine + other people's) Bev's background Bev's family Growing up in Columbus, Ohio Conformity Authenticity Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll Getting pregnant at age 48 Meeting, falling in love, and having kids with Al Pacino Al Pacino's mystique and how his fame has grown Addictive behavior Why she did Vacation after at first saying 'No.' Chevy Chase Why I should talk to Chevy now (and PS I really, really want to) Getting shunned by Hollywood Insecurity in Hollywood Other love stories BONUS VIDEO! After attending college for Communications and earning minors in Advertising and Journalism she began her career in the digital marketing industry, as a content creator. On this week's episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick is joined by the lovely, talented and hilarious Tayla Lynn, granddaughter of country music legend and icon, Loretta Lynn. All this and more on this episode! We would love to hear from you! Email us at ROOTED@PROMISES.COM About Tayla Lynn! There is a bright eyed enthusiasm to singer/songwriter Tayla Lynn that cannot be denied. There is a warmth in her voice, truth behind her piercing blue eyes, and genuine affection when she speaks of her history, her family and friends, and most of all her art. Born into one of Nashville's greatest musical dynasties, Lynn's passion for singing and performing was sparked from an early age watching Loretta Lynn and Ernest Ray Lynn. She was four the first time Loretta Lynn took her on stage. Signed to Skyville Records in 2007, Lynn's first major musical project was the trio Stealing Angels with Caroline Cutbirth and Jennifer Wayne. Her first solo project, The Ranch, released in 2016, was the culmination of a move across the country, addiction, recovery, a lot of hard work, and a dash of her grandmother, Loretta Lynn. She writes and sings her truth about love, healing, motherhood, and the coal dust that runs through her Kentucky veins. Lynn's album on Heart of Texas Records, 'Tayla Lynn sings Loretta Lynn', is available everywhere! Instagram: @TheCastCollective Twitter: @TheCastCollective About Loretta Lynn: Loretta Lynn has long been established as the undisputed Queen of Country Music, with more than 60 years of recording and touring to her name. A self-taught guitarist and songwriter, Lynn shook up Nashville by writing her own songs which tackled boundary-pushing topics drawn from her own life experiences as a wife and mother. “Coal Miner's Daughter,” “Fist City” and “Don't Come Home A' Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)” are just three of 16 country No. 1 singles. Inducted into more music Halls of Fame than any female recording artist, including The Country Music Hall of Fame & Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was the first woman to be named the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year in 1972. Lynn received Kennedy Center Honors, a Presidential Medal of Freedom and was named recipient of Billboard's inaugural Women in Music “Legend” Award. With 18 nominations, Lynn has won four Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. She has sold more than 45 million records worldwide. Still Woman Enough, Lynn's 50th studio album (excluding her 10 collaborations with Conway Twitty) became her latest. In it she celebrates women in country music, including a cover of “Keep On The Sunny Side” and a new interpretation of her very first single, “I'm A Honky Tonk Girl". #lgbtqia #trauma #recovery #podcast #mentalhealth #lifestyle #inspiration #purpose #therapy #selfcare #healing Keywords: trauma, recovery, podcast, mental health, rooted recovery stories, mental health podcast, trauma podcast, anxiety podcast, recovery podcast, coping mechanisms, nashville, domestic violence, trauma, podcast, interview, country music,

Building off their first of the year topic, Pat and Matt got the chance to discuss the most famous soldiers of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, the coal miners of the 48 Pennsylvania Infantry! To help flesh out the history of this well known and documented regiment is fellow ranger, John Hoptak.John and Matt go way back, having both previously worked at Antietam National Battlefield and Pat was fortunate to attend several of John's programs while he was there. Throughout the years however the 48th Pennsylvania has been a passion project for John, not only on the battlefields of the National Park Service, but also in his personal research and writing. This is a fantastic discussion that covers all aspects of the regiment and the men that made up its ranks. It also wouldn't be a talk on the 48th Pennsylvania without covering it's most famous digging operation during the Siege of Petersburg and the tragedy that followed their success. The History Things Podcast is brought to you by HistoryNet, publisher of 9 different historical magazines including; the Civil War Times, American History, & Military History! What better way to kick off Season Five than by getting down into the weeds on some regional history!? This month the guys are speaking to Jake Wynn about the proud, but controversial history of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and the Coal Miners strike that occured there during the Civil War.For those who have spent some time with the Civil War, Schuylkill County is likely a Pennsylvania County you have heard of before. Famous for its coal mines and miners, the county was torn between trying to put men in the field and keep coal coming up out of the ground. This led to resentment and then outright resistance by the miners themselves. So join us as Pat and Matt dig deep into this story with Wynning History's own, Jake Wynn! The History Things Podcast is brought to you by HistoryNet, publisher of 9 different historical magazines including; the Civil War Times, American History, & Military History! Black lung disease, a debilitating and incurable condition that affects coal miners, is now on the rise for younger mine workers in Central Appalachia – which labor advocates say is due to unsafe working conditions that have gone unchecked. Journalist Kim Kelly joins us to discuss her investigative reporting on the issue, and what's being done to protect miners from the dangers they face on the job.And in headlines: Israeli lawmakers approved a key piece of legislation to overhaul the country's judicial system, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed legislation banning all forms of gender-affirming care, and the CDC is expected to release guidelines for a “morning after” pill to prevent certain sexually transmitted infections.Show Notes:In These Times: “The Young Miners Dying of ‘An Old Man's Disease'” – https://tinyurl.com/yefx5jh5Fight Like Hell: The Untold History of American Labor — https://tinyurl.com/7znxmpfvOpportunity Insights | Diversifying America's Leaders: The Role of College Admissions – https://opportunityinsights.org/paper/collegeadmissions/What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastCrooked Coffee is officially here.
