"I'm becoming the person I'm becoming. I'm following my inner, personal route." Susan Ní Chríodáin   Welcome to episode 100. This is the second in the trilogy of past, present and future. In this episode I talk about my the present and where I am in my journey as well as some of the paths I am exploring.  Is there a line you remember from a poem or short story in school that still fascinates you to this day? I talk about one I remember. Do you ever wish you had more space to be and not just do? I talk about making space and about white space, liminal spaces, wide-open spaces and more.  And of course I do all of this with some help from some writers, poets and previous episodes.    Susan Ní Chríodáin is the host of Life Beyond the Numbers. This conversation is recorded from Glasgow during the COP26 and the Business Fights Poverty Climate Justice Summit. Gib Bulloch, intrapreneur, business influencer and founder of Craigberoch Business Decelerator joins us in Glasgow at COP26 to share his thoughts on why business needs to care more deeply about their people, how connecting with our environment and slowing down will create the energy and space for the breakthrough innovations much needed to solve the climate crisis. Gib grew up a stone's through from Glasgow on the small island of Bute. After 25 years in business, including setting up the award winning Accenture Development Partnerships, a corporate social enterprise that provides development sector organisations access to Accenture's top people, knowledge and assets on a not-for-profit basis, and which delivered quarter of a billion dollars' worth of services across 70 countries in its first decade – Gib returned to Bute to decelerate. Craigberoch Decelerator creates a platform for social innovation, operating at the nexus of business, the arts, the environment and well-being. During our conversation Gib reflects on what COP26 means to Glasgow and shares why he doesn't think we have yet created the conditions required to step into a sustainable future – before sharing what it will take. As Gib explains: “Slowing down helps us to tap into our innate creativity and desire for purpose—to drive transformation in ourselves, within organisations and in the world around us.” To find out more: Gib Bulloch: https://gibbulloch.com Craigberoch Business Deccelerator: https://craigberoch.org/events/decelerator-lab/decelerator-launch-lab/ Business Fights Poverty Climate Justice Summit: https://businessfightspoverty.org/climate-justice-summit-2021-register/

"Businesses are fairly unhappy places to be at the moment. People, young people, bright people who've done everything right, who've got a good education they've paid through the noses for, who've worked hard and they've got into these elite organisations and are saying "Is this it? Is this what I want to do?" They look 30 years ahead 40 years ahead to the bosses and say, "Is that what I want to be?"" Gib Bulloch.   Gib talks about how he began to question his 'lovely yuppie lifestyle' in London, in the late 90s, having done very "well" for himself. Is this all there is to life? A committed non-conformist and a catalyst for change he founded Accenture Development Partners, described by some as a guerilla movement within Accenture, where today 50,000 staff are on a waiting list to work for a 50% pay-cut. We talk about leadership, corporate immune systems, seizing opportunities and entrepreneurship. Being a corporate insurgent isn't all plain sailing and Gib openly discusses his stay in a psychiatric unit and he explains that one of the main drivers for writing his book was to stand up and be counted about mental health and to shift the debate from the mental health of individuals to the mental health of the organisation and of the system causing these problems.   Gib Bulloch is a speaker, writer and facilitator with a unique perspective on the relationship between business, society and the self. He spent 25 years at three of the world's largest companies – BP, Mars and Accenture. During his time at Accenture, he set up the award-winning Accenture Development Partners, a corporate social enterprise that provides development sector organisations access to Accenture's top people, knowledge and assets on a not-for-profit basis.  With an insider's view of the corporate engine and an awareness of the impact that business can have on the individual, he is passionate about creating a more mindful, empowered and balanced approach to the world of work.    Connect with Gib: On LinkedIn Website: https://gibbulloch.com/bullog/  Craigberoch: https://craigberoch.org/    Resources: The Intrapreneur: Confessions of a Corporate Insurgent, Gib Bulloch  Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership, Joseph Jaworski The Hero's Journey, Joseph Cambell

Finding Purpose in Business  This is the first podcast I ever recorded. Gib Bulloch consults, writes and speaks on a range of topics relating to the role of business in society. His first book: “The Intrapreneur: Confessions of a Corporate Insurgent” (2018) is a personal story of his 15-year journey to create and scale Accenture's global "not-for-loss" consulting business.Gib believes passionately in the power of business to change the world and in the power of the individual to change the world of business and he is in the process of creating a business ‘decelerator' on the Isle of Bute in Scotland where he was born. Two years ago I heard the inspirational Gib Bulloch speak at a conference in Singapore. I was interested in starting a podcast but at the time had not actually recorded any episodes. I didn't know Gib but with help from Martin Ryan plucked up the courage to speak to him after his talk and with huge grace, Gib agreed to record a podcast in the only 30 minutes he had free the next day.So why has it taken two years for me to publish our episode? Mainly because of a crisis of confidence which stopped me recording anything. This year I started the Our Community podcast and when I re-listened to this conversation I was stunned by the relevancy of the content. In life, things sometimes unfold at the right time and the time to hear Gib's wise perspective about community is certainly now.      We talk about being part of a remote rural community on the isle of Bute and civic engagement; following your purpose inside big business; asking deeper questions and following your heart; conquering your fears and facing mental illness; Gib's dream of a rural business decelerator and the probability of location independence and global economic affordability.  Huge thank you to Gib and to Martin Ryan.    References:Keep up to date on Gib's activities by subscribing to his monthly blog, The Bullog at: www.gibbulloch.com/bullog/  or on Twitter: @gibbullochThe Intrapreneur Confessions of A Corporate Insurgent: https://www.amazon.com/Intrapreneur-Confessions-corporate-insurgent/dp/1912618400

“I believe we all have that cubic centimeter of chance that is dangling tantalizingly in front of us, encouraging us to be bold and cross the threshold.” -- Gib Bulloch We live in a world that has mastered acceleration. Can you imagine a world that is equally masterful in deceleration? What would you create if you embarked on an adventure, fully trusting that the ‘how’ of your Masterpiece would take care of itself? Gib Bulloch joins me for a deep conversation from the French Alps above Morzine, while I enjoy nature from Mont Pèlerin above Lake Geneva. Founder and former Executive Director of Accenture Development Partnerships, Gib experienced two significant events that changed the course of his life forever: a fever that triggered a flow of inspired insights following a trip to India, and five days and nights he spent in a psychiatric ward in Glasgow that catalyzed the creation of another Masterpiece: his book Intrapreneur: Confessions of a Corporate Insurgent. His journey is a powerful illustration of the need to break down in order to break through. We also discuss: The corporate immune system, the symptoms it creates, the underlying cause, and the need to catalyze purposeful innovation in the fourth sector Breaking mental health taboos in business and remaining open to every possible interpretation Gib’s Hero’s Journey of stepping over the threshold, allowing bliss to guide his vision so that he could return home to the Isle of Bute and create his latest Masterpiece: the Craigberoch Business Decelerator Links: Craigberoch Gib’s book Intrapreneur: Confessions of a corporate insurgent

A self-described ‘Corporate Insurgent', Gib believes passionately in the power of business to change the world and in the power of the individual to change the world of business. After an early career spent at BP and Mars, Gib's epiphany came from a year as a business volunteer with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in the Balkans in 2000. Over the following 15 years, Gib founded and scaled Accenture's global 'not-for-loss' consulting business, Accenture Development Partnerships. This week on the Finding Impact Podcast, we are talking about burnout, corporate insurgency and a mental hospital. This is the second in the series of podcasts that we are covering on burnout and mental stress in the social sector. We are talking with Gib Bulloch about his personal experience of what he calls the ‘event' when he suffered from a burnout that put him in a mental hospital for 5 days and became the setting of his new book "The Intrapreneur: Confessions of a Corporate Insurgent". The book is an engrossing read on Gib's personal journey of burnout, and how he's turned it into an opportunity for others, to spark a new breed of social activists working within, or about to join, or completely disillusioned by today's business world.  Gib Bulloch is also the founder of Accenture Development Partnerships, a non-profit arm of Accenture, for building cross-sector partnerships between businesses and NGOs. On this podcast, you will learn:  How Gib first discovered the true meaning of working for ‘purpose', when he was volunteering with the VSO International in the Balkans after the Kosovo crisis. VSO partners with businesses to attracts mid-level corporate professionals and offers them volunteering opportunities. How this experience led to Gib conceiving and founding the Accenture Development Partners (ADP) in 2001, as a social enterprise within Accenture. ADP was conceived on the idea of bringing business and technology expertise to parts of the world where it is greatly needed but has least access to it, and its business model depended on the three-way contribution between people, ADP and the charitable organization clients. The ‘event', which became the inspiration of his new book and he quotes - "Looking back, the retreat in India couldn't have come at a better time for me. I'd signed up for an event organised by a group called Leaders' Quest that would see me spend four days in the Rajasthan desert. The retreat offered a mix of activities – discussions in small focus groups about the state of the world, visits to impoverished villages, talks by inspiring NGO leaders – even yoga and meditation classes. I'd gone to get myself out of the rut, out of the comfort zone – to find new inspiration to break the internal impasse I'd been facing. I got more than I bargained for." Why social entrepreneurs are more prone to stress and isolation when compared with business entrepreneurs. The jobs of people working towards a social mission are never ever done fully and it's very difficult to dis-engage like in a regular day-job. This leads to an incredibly high burnout rate in the sector. The Wellbeing Project (an initiative of Ashoka, Skoll and Schwab) recognizes this endemic problem in social entrepreneurship and works towards catalysing a culture of inner wellbeing for social entrepreneurs and changemakers How there is a fundamental challenge at the heart of business today - as the capitalist economic system with its single-minded focus on profit is creating tremendous amounts of corporate workforce dis-engagement and high levels of burnouts. Traditional corporate responses (yoga rooms, gym memberships, etc.) are mere tinkerings, whereas what is needed is a fundamental re-thinking and re-imagination of workforce burnouts. How organizations such as Thrive Global, established by Arianna Huffington, are working toward raising awareness of the hidden costs of workforce burnouts to business and economy The need to imagine another paradigm around people's relationship with money as most people are trapped in the hamster wheel where they feel the compelling need to have more and more money. Gib talks Peter Kuneig's ‘moneywork' and his book that exposes misleading flaws and lies in many universally accepted and unquestioned assumptions about money Finally, Gib shares that he saw in his manic vulnerability a source of strength which led him to write and try and break the taboo around mental health in business.  Links to Resources:  Gib Bulloch, The Bullog Newsletter Gib's Book: The Intrapreneur: Confessions of a Corporate insurgent Accenture Development Partnerships Organizations and resources mentioned in the podcast: VSO International, Leaders' Quest, The Wellbeing Project, Thrive Global, Peter Koenig: 'moneywork' and Money Seminars  Connect with Gib:  LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook

Gib Bulloch - author of 'The Intrapreneur - Confessions of a corporate insurgent' - had a traditionally "successful" job in a big corporation, but still felt a sense of unfulfillment. When he discovered the need for his business skills within NGOs, in less developed countries, Gib decided to bridge that gap. Taking full advantage of his position at Accenture, he developed the award-winning Accenture Development Partnerships, a corporate social enterprise that provided Accenture's resources and people to organizations in less developed countries, in a non-profit basis. In this interview, Gib tells us about his journey of self-discovery, and how he provided purpose to so many of his colleagues by allowing them to embark on this social intrapreneurship journey with him, and how he managed to get Accenture on-board with him, and manage resources and expectations while running a non-profit within a very business-driven organisation. ► Check out our website: bundl.com

It all started with Gib Bulloch this week’s guest. It all started when Gib read an article in the Financial Times that inspired him to volunteer, as a business consultant, in a developing country. Until then, he had always thought of international development as being outside the purview of someone with an MBA. He had always thought of it as work that was done by doctors and nurses. He created a talent magnet for Accenture. The organization found that its most talented employees were the most eager to take a salary cut, they had found a way to bake purpose into their business model.Today, Gib sees the intractable problems of the developing world as business opportunities in disguise.
