Today's podcast guest is Chris Chase. Chris is a strength coach and performance specialist with extensive NBA experience, known for integrating biomechanics, movement quality, and strength training into practical systems for basketball athletes, with an emphasis on durability, adaptable movement, and long-term athletic development. Chris Chase returns to discuss the evolution of modern sports performance training, from force outputs and plyometrics to deceleration mechanics, movement constraints, and load management in the NBA. Chris and Joel dive into the balance between “functional” and traditional strength work, the risks and rewards of plyometric training, resisted acceleration/deceleration methods, and why many athletes may benefit more from simplified, output-driven systems than excessive movement complexity. The conversation also explores basketball athleticism, reactive strength, tendon health, and the art of minimal effective dose training. Before you can express force, you must be able to absorb it.Day 25 focuses on force absorption — the ability to decelerate, stabilise, and safely manage load as it enters the body. This is one of the most overlooked skills in training, yet one of the most critical for longevity, resilience, and repeatable performance.Every step, landing, change of direction, or contact introduces force. When absorption is poor, that force is dumped into joints, connective tissue, or vulnerable structures. When absorption is well-trained, force is distributed, controlled, and redirected efficiently. This session develops:Deceleration control at the hips, knees, and anklesTrunk stability during load acceptanceTiming and coordination during landing and lowering phasesThe ability to slow down without collapsingForce absorption isn't passive. It's an active skill that requires awareness, positioning, and intent. This day emphasises controlled lowering, pauses, and transitions — teaching the body how to accept load before producing it again. This work directly supports injury reduction, cleaner technique, and better performance under fatigue. When you can slow down well, you move better, recover faster, and stay in the game longer.Absorb first.Control the load.Redirect with purpose.Day 25 strengthens the brakes — so the engine can keep performing.Shaun Kober is a Mindset & Performance Specialist, with a unique skillset forged in the trenches, through the various stages of life."I shouldn't be in the position I am right now." Brands crossing the $100M line, roughly speaking, face a privileged danger : deceleration. It happens very quickly once you hit max ACV or even ¾ of your category's max ACV. If you didn't prepare for this, you will have to act fast. It's very hard to an emerging brand to get past $500M and stay growing like KIND. The solution is to aim for the opposite - acceleration, even when it seems least likely to happen.Your Host: Dr. James F. Understanding and applying these concepts can considerably improve the efficacy of treatment protocols, particularly for complex conditions that seem resistant to traditional medical approaches. **Deceleration and Proprioception: Key Components in Preventing Injuries** One philosophy that has emerged as particularly impactful is the emphasis on teaching deceleration before acceleration. This notion suggests that before one can effectively teach movement, one must first master the art of controlled stopping. Most athletic injuries occur during the deceleration phase, not during acceleration. Thus, by focusing on deceleration, practitioners can help prevent common injuries such as sprained ankles or ACL tears. Proprioception, the body's ability to perceive its position in space, is at the heart of this philosophy. By incorporating proprioceptive exercises into treatment plans, practitioners can improve joint stability, which is crucial for both athletes and individuals recovering from injury. **Rehabilitation Beyond Conventional Exercise: A Shift to Movement Patterns** In educational courses, there's often a pushback against the term "exercise," favoring instead "movement patterns." This shift underscores the idea that movement should be functional and adaptable, whether the patient is a professional athlete or someone in their later years simply aiming to maintain an active lifestyle. These movement-based therapies aim to rehabilitate through enhancing the body's natural motion, making it apt for both sports and non-sports-related scenarios. This focus on movement patterns rather than just exercises assists in improving the rehabilitation process. The integration of these methods results in moves that feel safe and contribute to the healing process, enhancing the effectiveness of physical rehabilitation courses. **The Role of Pain Perception and Safety in Rehabilitation** In any therapeutic setting, the perception of safety is paramount. Movement, when perceived as safe, can significantly aid in the repair and rehabilitation process. Practitioners often encounter patients whose progress stalls due to underlying fears of movement, frequently linked to unresolved injuries or ineffective past treatments. Addressing these fears by creating a safe environment for pain-free movement can unlock significant improvements in recovery outcomes. Furthermore, the importance of addressing underlying neural issues, such as nerve adhesions that may be preventing recovery, cannot be overstated. Practitioners must be attuned to these details, ensuring that the patient feels safe enough for their body to relax and heal.

He emphasizes the importance of a team approach in rehabilitation, the integration of various disciplines, and the balance between art and science in the rehabilitation process. Loren shares insights on the industry's evolution regarding return to play protocols, the significance of maintaining engagement during rehabilitation, and the criteria for progression in recovery. In this conversation, Loren Landow discusses the intricacies of rehabilitation, focusing on movement patterns, the significance of the foot and ankle, and the mechanics of deceleration. He emphasizes the importance of investigating movement, restoring ankle dorsiflexion, and building intensity in training. The dialogue also covers the integration of reactivity in rehabilitation, the assessment of asymmetry, and the collaboration required for effective return to play processes. Landow highlights the need for ongoing communication and involvement even after athletes reintegrate into practice. Main talking points: There is an art to rehabilitation that goes beyond numerical models. Good collaborative teams yield the best outcomes in return to play. Experienced coaches should lead return to play situations. Restoring rhythm and stability is crucial in the initial stages of rehab. Deceleration mechanics are essential for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Intensity in training should be based on the athlete's needs, not just external loads. Reactivity should be introduced early in the rehabilitation process.

He emphasizes the importance of education in ACL rehabilitation. The type of graft used in ACL surgery significantly affects recovery. Early intervention in rehabilitation can lead to better outcomes. Managing swelling is crucial for effective recovery post-surgery. Different graft types have unique healing timelines and considerations. Patient education is key to understanding the rehabilitation process. The strength of the graft can vary significantly based on the type used. Rehabilitation strategies should be tailored to the individual athlete. Understanding the risks and timelines of recovery can help prevent re-injury. The quality of physical therapy coaching is crucial for recovery. Limb symmetry index should be at least 90% for strength. Plyometrics should be introduced gradually in rehabilitation. Deceleration training is essential for athletes returning to sport. Many physical therapists lack knowledge in plyometric training. Re-injury rates for ACL injuries are alarmingly high. Education on plyometrics is lacking in physical therapy schools. Collaboration between therapists and strength coaches is vital. Athletes often shy away from loading their knees post-injury. Understanding knee and hip strategies can improve rehabilitation outcomes. Quad strength is crucial for recovery from jumper's knee. Deceleration is a significant factor in developing jumper's knee. Plyometric progressions must be approached carefully to avoid aggravating knee pain. Not all exercises are effective for everyone; individual responses vary. Eccentric loading is essential for tendon health and recovery. Leg extensions can be beneficial but may not work for everyone. There is no magical exercise for knee pain; a comprehensive approach is necessary. Sissy squats can be more effective than leg extensions. Eccentric loading is crucial for knee rehabilitation. Isometric exercises can help with jumper's knee recovery. Athletes often need to reduce sport-specific activities to heal. Pain management requires honest conversations with athletes. Frequency of training can impact recovery from knee injuries. Achilles injuries require careful management and progression. Partial tears in tendons can be challenging to rehabilitate. Cultural attitudes towards pain vary among athletes. Watch this episode on YouTube.Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, and soulful impact happens when we slow down enough to live and lead from the deeper truth inside. We are so addicted to speed in our culture. It's the water that we swim in. This is especially the case in the world of entrepreneurship — i.e. “Do More Faster” or “Move Fast and Break Things.”I love going fast when that's what is called for. But too much of anything — even a good thing — gets out of balance.Slowing down can be really hard to do when you're programmed to believe that moving fast equals success, and operating from a consciousness of scarcity and threat. But taking the time to slow down in a mindful, intentional, and soulful way is key to discovering and embodying the deeper truth of who we really are.And it's only after we've done that that we become truly unstoppable. My guest on today's episode is an incredible example of this.Steven Schlafman is the founder of Downshift, the world's first decelerator — helping high performers slow down in times of professional transition.Formerly a partner at a New York Venture Capital firm, Steve (aka Schlaf) was forced to wake up and slow down due to a lack of sustainability in his own lifestyle. Now 10 years into a deep journey of self-healing and self-discovery, I believe Steve and Downshift are poised for a greater level of genuine impact, success, fulfillment and freedom than anything that the prior version of Steve could have imagined. And I that's a direct result of the consciousness and soul-rooted place that he and his team are leading from.--Links & Resources* Follow Brooks on YouTube, Instagram, or LinkedIn* Soulful Impact: soulfulimpact.co* Downshift: Apply for the Spring ‘25 Decelerator Cohort* Follow Schlaf on X or LinkedIn* Schlaf's Substack: Where The Road Bends* William Stafford Poem: The Way It Is* Get newsletter updates & future episodes delivered to your inbox: Subscribe to Soulful Impact on Substack--Chapters04:30 The Wisdom of Slowing Down07:36 Deceleration and Connection10:20 The Birth of Downshift13:17 Challenges of Modern Acceleration16:22 Facing the Fear of Slowing Down19:32 The Cost of Speed22:28 Confronting Personal Pain25:34 The Journey to Authenticity29:44 Facing the Pain of Addiction32:53 The Journey to Sobriety36:28 Embracing Life's Cycles38:36 Exploring the Concept of Soul43:40 Trusting the Inner Knowing50:53 The Four Windows of Knowing54:55 The Importance of Choice in Personal Growth57:11 Navigating Existential Questions in a Changing World01:01:02 Shifting Paradigms: From Extraction to Cultivation01:04:46 Nature as a Teacher: Insights from Soulcraft01:14:47 Fatherhood: Balancing Presence and Ambition Get full access to Soulful Impact at www.soulfulimpact.blog/subscribe

In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, Charlie Faulkner discusses the critical importance of deceleration and change of direction (COD) in sports performance, emphasizing tailored training approaches and practical experience. Charlie highlights his journey in coaching, where understanding the demands of each game and the specific movement qualities required has been central to his philosophy. Deceleration and COD are essential biomotor qualities that influence high-intensity actions in sports like football and tennis. Effective COD relies on mechanics such as a strong penultimate step and ankle elasticity. Charlie explains how profiling athletes through tools like the modified 505 test, opto jump, and Sprint 1080 provides valuable insights into their movement capabilities and limitations. Video analysis and scoring systems, such as the CMAS scoring system, are used to assess movement mechanics and identify potential injury risks. Charlie emphasizes the importance of evaluating asymmetries, knee abduction moments, and early braking to better understand and address performance issues. Training strategies should focus on targeted muscle adaptations and movement mechanics, using drills that replicate match conditions. Strengthening specific muscles, like the vastus lateralis and calf, and employing exercises such as kettlebell swings and targeted hopping drills can improve deceleration and COD efficiency. Charlie advocates for individualized programs that consider the demands of each sport and athlete. High-force training, reactive hops, and tailored rehab strategies are vital for enhancing performance while preventing injuries. His approach underscores the value of continuous assessment and reflection to refine training outcomes. Main talking points: How to assess deceleration Using video analysis to evaluate movement mechanics Addressing asymmetries in athlete movement profiles Training the penultimate step for better braking efficiency Incorporating reactive drills to improve COD efficiency Monitor knee abduction moments to prevent injuries

On this week's episode, Coach Jav is joined again by Yuji Suzuki!  Yuji joined us during our last episode and in this one, they dive into the topic of deceleration training! The skill of deceleration is an important one for athletes, but it is traditionally trained in a very decontextualized way.  Which is devoid of many of the elements that help skills transfer to the game. This episode dives into how coaches can train deceleration, in a more contextual way, which can lead to greater transfer to sport. One quick note before we get started, you may have seen on social media that we at Emergence have announced the dates for the 2024 Sport Movement Skill Conference. This is a hybrid online and in person event and is my favorite event of the year. You have the option of attending for the lectures, the in person coaching or both. Right now, we are offering our early bird pricing so I would highly suggest you mark tour calendar for October 4th and 5th and take advantage of this sale!If you like today's episode, leave a review here....If you want to reach me directly, contact me on social media or shoot me @javier@emergentmvmt.comEpisode ResourcesYuji's Instagram Yuji on X Episode 82 with Yuji 2024 SMSC Credits: Song- "Starstruck" by Freebeats.io Let's Chat!Twitter: @thecoachjavIG: @thecoachjav

In this insightful episode of the HNL Movement Podcast, Andrew delves into the often-overlooked aspect of performance training: deceleration. While much focus is placed on force production and power generation, Andrew highlights the critical role of deceleration in both performance and injury prevention. Drawing an analogy to high-performance cars that require robust braking systems to complement their acceleration, he explains how our bodies, too, need to master the art of absorbing and controlling force to operate at peak efficiency. Throughout the episode, Andrew explores the key elements of effective deceleration training, emphasizing the importance of both absorbing force smoothly and executing quick, precise stops. He discusses how a well-developed ability to decelerate not only enhances athletic performance but also helps prevent injuries by enabling better control and stability during dynamic movements. Tune in to understand how integrating deceleration exercises into your routine can elevate your overall training and maintain a higher level of functional capability. Enjoy the episode!
