It's been 10 years since the start of Community Pulse and, appropriately enough, we've reached the milestone of 100 episodes. To celebrate, we invited Jono Bacon -- our very first guest on the show -- and SJ Morris -- a former host of the show -- to join us and reminisce about changes in the DevRel industry as well as how we've changed personally and professionally over the last 10 years. We'll laugh a little… cry a little… and as always, learn a lot along the way. Lauren Livak Gilbert is the Executive Director of the Digital Shelf Institute (DSI), which shapes the future of digital and advances commerce through community, content, and education. In her role, she defines the strategy for creating a global industry commerce community to support brands, retailers, and future leaders in the complex digital environment. As a thought leader in digital and design, Lauren has over 10 years of experience driving impactful multichannel design content, transformative digital shelf solutions, and high-conversion web UX designs across multiple regions. Before DSI, she held numerous roles at Johnson & Johnson, where she owned the digital shelf for consumer products in North America. In this episode… The pace of change in digital commerce has forced brands to rethink their organizational structures. Traditional structures built solely for brick-and-mortar sales can no longer keep up with evolving customer expectations and constant platform updates. How can brands transform their organizations to stay relevant in the omnichannel marketplace? Seasoned digital commerce strategist Lauren Livak Gilbert urges brands to transform their overall operations instead of merely choosing where eCommerce belongs in the company. Presenting yourself to retailers as a single unified company, setting shared goals across teams, and using AI to automate tasks like forecasting and content creation are essential. Lauren also highlights the need for clean, standardized data and advises HR leaders to prepare the next generation of digital talent. These shifts position businesses to adapt quickly and thrive. In this episode of The Digital Deep Dive, Aaron Conant sits down with Lauren Livak Gilbert, Executive Director of The Digital Shelf Institute (DSI), to discuss building the reinvented omnichannel organization of the future. Lauren explains why shared goals drive higher eCommerce sales, how AI frees teams for strategic thinking, and why HR must rethink talent development.

ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
What happens when Italian folk traditions cross the Atlantic? This video explores how Italian witchcraft, especially the healing practice of Segnature, has been reimagined, reinvented, and often misrepresented in the United States. From Leland's Aradia to Wicca-inspired “Stregheria,” we'll look at how Italian-American communities blended folklore, Catholic devotion, and Pagan spirituality to create new forms of practice. But are these the same as the vernacular traditions in Italy, or something entirely different? This video is a recording of the paper I presented at the World Congress of the International Association for the History of Religions, held at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.Join me as we unpack the myths, the reinventions, and the cultural translations behind Italian witchcraft in America.CONNECT & SUPPORT

If it's acting, great. If it's driving a truck, great.” “We would just pitch things back and forth, and if a line or a reaction would get a laugh from enough people, then it would be like, alright, put it in the movie.” “You have to be flexible enough or open enough to kind of be like, oh, I didn't construct things the correct way. And I kind of owe it to you for you to not be confused.” “Preparation versus flexibility—having everything prepared to the nth degree, and being prepared to totally drop it if you need to.” Guests: Macon Blair Resources: Macon Blair on I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore (No Film School interview) Get tickets to The Toxic Avenger (Look Cinemas) Follow GG Hawkins's feature I Really Love My Husband on Instagram Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Mike Gulla, CEO of Adaptive Insurance, whose team is redefining what it means to be resilient in an era of climate uncertainty and operational volatility. We'll explore why now is the time for parametric and adaptive insurance, what inspired the creation of Adaptive, and how emerging technologies like AI, big data, and cloud computing are transforming the insurance landscape. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mike started Adaptive in early 2024 to help businesses build financial resilience against climate change, using parametric-style products and unique data assets. Starting a business comes with many challenges – revenue planning, product selection, and insurance. Our focus is helping owners understand how environmental factors like extreme weather or business interruptions could impact them over time. Power outages show that even with backup systems, grid failures can cause major disruptions – from dark streets to reduced customer traffic. As climate shifts, populations are moving into areas with new weather risks. My focus is on creating innovative insurance products that turn these challenges into opportunities for good BEST MOMENTS ‘The consumer needs knowledge to understand what the things are that are ultimately going to impact their business.' ‘Speed is huge, which is why we use parametric products, a business owner needs to be able to make a decision very quickly after an event occurs. When you combine knowledge with speed it helps them make a better decision for their business.' The insurance industry has suffered from how fast things have changed.' ‘Parametric insurance products are similar to streaming services in that they allow the consumer a new opportunity to have access to a different type of coverage that specifically focusses on something that might impact their business.' ABOUT THE GUESTS Mike Gulla, CEO and Co-Founder of Adaptive Insurance, has over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry and is passionate about transforming how insurance works by leveraging technology and innovative strategies. His career is marked by a commitment to making insurance more adaptive, efficient, and customer focused. Mike's leadership at Adaptive Insurance reflects his vision for a smarter, more responsive industry—one that meets the evolving needs of clients in a rapidly changing world. Known for his forward-thinking approach and dedication to excellence, Mike continues to inspire teams and drive meaningful change across the insurance landscape. At a recent Cabernet Sauvignon tasting in Los Angeles at the famed Republique restaurant, I spied this cool cat pouring off some aged wines. In that I fancy myself as a off-beat jacket guy, I had to engage Ron as to the provenance of not his wines, but of his jacket. And that is when the story began to unfold. Naturally, on the next trip to Napa, I had to get the whole story on the podcast. And here it is. Ron Nicholsen is the kind of vintner who makes you wonder if patience truly is a virtue—or just a wild gamble in the wine world. In this episode, you'll uncork the remarkable journey of a winemaker who dares to hold back his Cabernet for a full decade before release and whose devotion to authenticity runs deeper than sediment at the bottom of a hand-aged bottle. You'll hear how Ron's childhood, shaped by a grape-growing family and the steady, idiosyncratic hand of his stepfather, set the stage for an unconventional, legacy-driven pursuit: crafting age-worthy Napa Valley wines that aren't just tasted, but experienced. From his first steps at Camus under suspender-clad Charlie Wagner to the invaluable lessons at Spring Mountain and Cane Cellars, Ron's story is one of grape-to-glass transformation, family dynamics, and taking risks most wouldn't dare. Paul Kalemkiarian guides the conversation with the insight of someone who's seen a hundred thousand wines cross his glass, probing the economic and emotional weight of aging wines for years while resisting the fruit-forward trends dominating Napa's mainstream. Listeners will come away with an understanding of what it means to champion an “unblended, independent product” and the philosophy behind refusing to rush a wine to market—all while weathering personal and business upheaval. Expect to learn how terroir, tradition, and a stubborn sense of pride fuse into a singular tasting experience, why Ron believes fine wine is a three-dimensional, not a two-dimensional, pleasure, and how legacy can be bottled, aged, and passed down—one thoughtful vintage at a time. For decades, hydraulic fracturing—or fracking—has relied heavily on water and sand to crack underground rock and release oil and gas. Fracking is safe, proven, and reliable, and in collaboration with horizontal drilling, has resulted in the huge growth in hydro carbon production in the US and Canada. But fresh water is a scarce resource particularly in arid settings, and in many places under stress because of climate change. Disposal of used water is a technical challenge and costly. The sand resource, or proppant, is both costly to mine and heavy to ship. The mechanical process of forcing water and sand under pressure down the wells and into the rock generates a substantial carbon footprint. Enter RocketFrac, a Calgary-based innovator using solid rocket fuel to crack the status quo. Unlike conventional fracking, RocketFrac's technology eliminates the need for water and sand, which dramatically lowers carbon emissions and site disturbance. This self-propping, solid-fuel-based technique also opens up economically stranded assets, including abandoned or underperforming wells, with potential applications in water-stressed regions like California and the Middle East. It's an innovation that could redefine the economics and environmental impact of oil extraction. In this episode I speak with Pavan Elapavuluri, Chief Technology Officer at RocketFrac, to hear firsthand about the origin of RocketFrac's solution, the physics behind the technology, its regulatory journey, and the digital tools they're using to model outcomes and rank well candidates. From carbon offsets to offshore potential, this episode is an explosive look at what could be the next big leap in oilfield operations. And yes, those puns are all intended! ⸻

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series. on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today, we're talking about something that affects every single one of us—aging. But not just the personal experience of getting older. We're talking about how old age itself was invented—how retirement, security, and dignity in later life were shaped by policies, culture, and economics, and why, for many, those promises now feel uncertain. My guest today is Smithsonian Associate, historian James Chappel, author of the remarkable new book, available at Apple Books Golden Years: How Americans Invented and Reinvented Old Age. Dr. James Chappel will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up. The title of his presentation is The Golden Years. Please check out our show notes today for details. It's an eye-opening look at how, for much of history, Americans worked until their final breath. Then, with Social Security, employer pensions, and rising prosperity, a new era of retirement emerged—one that allowed millions to live out their later years in security. But that era is fading. Today, older Americans are working longer, facing financial precarity, and navigating a system that feels increasingly fragile. James Chappel unpacks how we got here, the figures—both celebrated and forgotten—who shaped the story, and the pop culture that influenced how we see aging, from The Golden Girls to Grace and Frankie. He also challenges us to rethink the future. Should we accept the instability of old age as inevitable? Or is there a better way forward? This conversation is about history, but it's also about us—our parents, our children, and the future we want to build. So stay with us, as we dive into Golden Years with Smithsonian Associate, historian James Chappel.
