QFF: Quick Fire Friday – Your 20-Minute Growth Powerhouse! Welcome to Quick Fire Friday, the Grow A Small Business podcast series that is designed to deliver simple, focused and actionable insights and key takeaways in less than 20 minutes a week. Every Friday, we bring you business owners and experts who share their top strategies for growing yourself, your team and your small business. Get ready for a dose of inspiration, one action you can implement and quotable quotes that will stick with you long after the episode ends! In this episode of Quick Fire Friday, host Amanda Jones interviews Linda Manaena, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of LeaderLab, a consultancy dedicated to helping leaders create psychologically safe and high-performing workplaces. Linda discusses how LeaderLab uses neuroscience and practical, evidence-based tools to support leaders in shifting from command and control to leading with clarity, courage, and connection. She emphasizes the importance of moving beyond compliance to foster genuine trust, inclusion, and well-being within teams. Linda also shares common ways leaders unintentionally undermine safety and the mindset shifts needed to build resilient cultures. A special highlight of the episode is Linda announcing her upcoming podcast, Meno Mojo, which blends sass, science, and shenanigans to explore the often-overlooked topic of menopause. Key Takeaways for Small Business Owners: Psychological Safety is Not Optional — Even for Small Teams: Linda debunks the myth that small businesses are “too small” to worry about psychological safety. Regardless of team size, creating a culture where people feel safe, heard, and valued is essential for productivity and well-being. Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast: Taking the time to build trust and safety within your team may feel slow initially, but it leads to smoother operations and faster results over time. Investing upfront in people yields long-term gains. Avoid the “Toughen Up” Trap: Old leadership mindsets like “just toughen up” are no longer effective. These attitudes can unintentionally harm team morale. Instead, leaders should focus on empathy, curiosity, and adapting to individual team member needs. Our hero crafts outstanding reviews following the experience of listening to our special guests. Are you the one we've been waiting for? Compliance and Culture Go Hand-in-Hand: Safety isn't just a compliance checklist—it's about culture. Leaders must balance legal responsibilities with a human-centered approach that empowers teams to thrive emotionally and psychologically. Leaders Can Undermine Safety Unintentionally: Common behaviors like micromanaging, rushing decisions, or dismissing ideas can quietly erode psychological safety. Awareness and better communication—like asking “What can I do differently to help you do your best work?”—go a long way. Leadership Starts With Self-Awareness: One of Linda's strongest messages is about personal responsibility: leaders must look inward and understand their own behaviors and triggers to lead with courage and connection. Unlearning outdated habits is key to better leadership. One action small business owners can take: According to Linda Manaena, one action a small business owner should take is to ask their team, “What can I do differently to make it easier for you to do your best work?” and then simply listen. Creating space for open, honest dialogue builds psychological safety and trust. This small yet powerful step helps leaders better understand their people and improve overall team performance. This is the concluding episode of Leslie McFadden's appearance on Sexual Assault Survivor Stories. Leslie's experience is a powerful example of the systemic issues that many survivors face. In October 2015, she was drugged and raped in Brooklyn. The last thing she remembers was drinks on Stone Street; she would wake up in a hospital many hours later, not knowing what happened. Slowly, she began to piece together that something terrible had occurred. When Leslie reported her sexual assault to the NYPD's Special Victims Unit, she faced additional trauma. One of the first questions a detective asked her was whether this was truly a case of assault or just regret. The next day, she was asked to make a controlled call to the perpetrator, during which he admitted to the assault. Immediately after, the detective presented her with a form that she was told would put her case on hold pending further evidence. Unbeknownst to her, this was actually a case closure form, which she signed while in distress. The detective never spoke to the assailant and closed the case without further investigation. Leslie's story is not unique. She became one of 19 survivors to urge the federal Department of Justice to open an investigation into how the NYPD handled sexual assault survivors and their cases. In 2022, the DOJ opened an investigation into the NYPD's Special Victims Unit to examine whether the department discriminated against sexual assault survivors when conducting their investigations. This episode is the conclusion of a two-part encounter. Leslie is an articulate, strong, and influential voice for victims and survivors everywhere; her ongoing goal is to make a lasting change in this world, to help overcome rape culture, and encourage law enforcement to become trauma-informed, empathic, and thorough in the investigation of rape and sexual assault. As I mentioned in last week's episode, a former guest of SASS, Rachel Izzo, introduced me to Leslie. If you haven't heard Rachel Izzo's episodes, I encourage you to take the time to listen to those as well. Rachel and Leslie share similar experiences with the New York Police Department's Special Victims Unit, and have both shown immense courage in sharing their stories. It's almost here! It's that time of year when you need to stock up on sunscreen, check your travel plans one more time, and dive into a different kind of ministry. In this month's podcast, Sass, Amy, and Chris talk about how we, as ministry leaders (and as parents), can approach summer with intentionality and excitement. The different pace of life and ministry gives us the opportunity to do some things we don't normally have the time and space to do. We can focus more on the relationships we want to build instead of the programs we have to run. So, sit back, grab a refreshing drink, and listen to how we can all step into summer in a good and healthy way.

In this powerful crossover episode, I had the fantastic fortune to join forces with the hosts of the What They Don't Say: Sexual Assault and Everything in Between podcast for a special pod-share episode. It was an incredible opportunity for all of us to come together and share our unique perspectives on the journey of healing and justice after sexual assault. I've been following Shannon and Lauren's work for a while, and it was great to finally connect and collaborate. Their podcast offers such an unfiltered, raw approach to discussing trauma and healing, and this episode felt like the perfect chance to amplify that conversation. Shannon and Lauren dive deep into the realities that survivors face, from the emotional weight of trauma to the exhausting process of navigating the court system. They tackle what it really feels like to live with the aftermath of these experiences every day, and they aren't afraid to pull back the curtain on the messy, unglamorous parts of healing. Their no-holds-barred approach makes it clear that this isn't about sugarcoating anything—it's about talking honestly, without filters, and giving people the space to relate to the tough moments. In this episode, we come together for a candid conversation about the challenges we've faced and how important it is to keep sharing these stories, even when it's uncomfortable. We touch on the toll trauma can take on our lives and relationships, how the legal system can sometimes fail to offer the justice that survivors deserve, and the importance of community as a part of the healing process. It was truly an honor to share this unique episode with Shannon and Lauren, and I think you'll find it's a conversation that's real, heartfelt, and incredibly important. Whether you're a survivor, a supporter, or someone seeking to understand more about the realities of sexual assault and healing, this episode offers valuable insights and a reminder that you're not alone. An important side note: if you're finding value in these episodes, please take a moment to leave a 5-star rating on your podcast platform. AND,  please send me a note of support. These aren't just random fluctuations. They're signals from the autonomic nervous system—and as a future CRNA, being able to interpret them can mean the difference between chasing vital signs and anticipating them.   If you're serious about anesthesia, understanding the autonomic nervous system (ANS) isn't optional—it's essential. The ANS influences everything from anesthetic depth to hemodynamic management, and mastering its functions gives you a clinical edge both in school and in the OR.   Here's what you'll learn: The difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems Why understanding ANS function is crucial for interpreting anesthetic depth and hemodynamic trends How neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, and acetylcholine influence receptor activity The physiology of alpha, beta, and muscarinic receptors and how they guide pharmacologic decisions Real-world clinical examples that connect ANS theory to intraoperative decision-making Why the adrenal medulla plays a key role in the body's fight-or-flight response How this knowledge directly applies to your future practice and board exams   In this special episode, Dr. Sass Elisha—a nationally recognized anesthesia educator and co-founder of The Nurse Anesthesia—walks you through the complex world of the ANS in a way that's practical, clear, and rooted in real-life anesthesia scenarios.   By the end of this episode, you'll not only understand the “yin and yang” of autonomic balance—you'll be able to predict and respond to patient responses like a seasoned provider. This is foundational knowledge that will serve you from the classroom to the OR.   As Dr. Elisha would say, "It's go time!"   Want Guaranteed CRNA School Admission? When J Finley arrived at UC Berkeley as a graduate student in 2006, she planned on studying reparations and the legacy of slavery. But after a fellowship in South Africa, where she studied the Zulu language and culture, Finley says she realized Black people were never going to get reparations. Switching gears, she started thinking: “How else do Black people make do? Well, we laugh.”In Berkeley Talks episode 223, Finley, an associate professor of Africana studies at Pomona College who earned her master's degree and Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2008 and 2012, discusses her 2024 book Sass: Black Women's Humor and Humanity. During the talk, Finley shares how Black women have used and continue to use humor and, more specifically, sass, to speak back to power and assert their own humanity. Black women's humor, she contends, is “rooted in the racist, patriarchal and, many times, degrading conditions from which it developed” and is “an embodied expression of resilience at the moment of crisis that has come to be the hallmark of Black women's humor.” It's not that sass is merely for show, she argues, but there's an internal process that happens first that is then expressed gesturally and vocally. “If you are a Black woman, and you don't understand yourself as empowered, to have the agency to speak back within those relations,” she says, “in what world can you be free?”This UC Berkeley event, which took place March 18, was sponsored by the Department of African American Studies.Read more about J Finley, and her research on the use of Black women's humor as a form of resistance.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Pomona College photo. Last week, airport police were called to the air traffic control tower at DCA with reports of a fight between two FAA employees inside the control tower. The FAA says an employee is on administrative leave and it's investigating the incident. A new study on intermittent fasting found that people who limited eating three days per week lost about 17 pounds in a year on average, compared to nearly 11 pounds for those counting daily calories. Experts say the weight-loss plan is not for everyone. Nutritionist and dietitian Keri Glassman joins "CBS Mornings" to explain. Originally scheduled for just 8 days aboard the International Space Station, the two astronauts spent over 9 months in orbit due to delays with their Boeing Starliner return. Now back on Earth, they share how they coped, what they missed most, and how the mission unexpectedly became political. Genstart - DR's nyhedspodcast

Program publiceret i DR Lyd d. 27. marts 2025.
