In this episode, Amy, Chris, and Sass dive into the importance of connection. God designed us as relational people, wired to know and be known. I had an instant connection with Kirsten Harrison…we had a “vetting” phone call several weeks before we recorded her episode, and I truly wish I had recorded that conversation and made it a part of this weeks' episode so that you could actually hear that connection! Kirsten and her work are truly inspiring and captivating. Read on, if you would: Dr. Kirsten Harrison has dedicated her career to understanding trauma and guiding survivors through some of life's most difficult psychological and spiritual transitions. With research experience at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and advanced studies at Georgetown, Pepperdine, and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Harrison brings a wealth of knowledge and clinical skill to her work. Yet, as she shares in this episode, it is the lived experiences of her clients — their creativity, resilience, and will to survive — that have most profoundly shaped her philosophy and practice. As we talked, Kirsten took the conversation deep into the realities of trauma treatment, including her decades of work with PTSD, dissociation, and near-death experiences. She told me not only about her clinical insight and practices, but also her striking view of humanity, and her approach to healing, emphasizing that it is never linear, nor is it confined to a single framework. Instead, it is forged in the bravery of those willing to confront their trauma and fight for their own transformation. A central part of our discussion centered on her groundbreaking book, I, Sean/a: The Story of a Homeless Intersex Woman Who Inspired a Community. Co-authored with Sean/a Smith, the book chronicles the life of an intersex woman living with schizophrenia who endured nearly two decades of homelessness yet never lost her voice or her hope. Through Sean/a's story, Dr. Harrison exposes the failures of outdated medical practices, the destructive force of stigma, and the radical resilience it takes to survive and inspire change. This episode is an invitation to see trauma, healing, and identity through a wider lens. Dr. Harrison's wisdom and candor challenge us all to confront hard truths while also offering a vision of what is possible when compassion and science meet in service of dignity and justice. Im Interview spricht Markus Eggert mit Michael Jensen über dessen jüngst veröffentlichtes Buch „Bluthunde“, den fünften Teil der Syndikat-Reihe, die sich mit den Brüdern Sass beschäftigt. Eggert äußert sein Erstaunen darüber, dass er die Vorgängerbände unwissentlich verpasst hat, und fragt Jensen, wie es sei, über eine solch komplexe und vielschichtige Reihe zu schreiben. Jensen erklärt, dass die Idee zur Serie vor vielen Jahren entstand und sich über die Jahre entwickelt hat. Ursprünglich war die Suche nach urbanen Mythen in Deutschland der Ausgangspunkt, was ihm besonders an den Brüdern Sass, einem Gaunerpaar der 20er Jahre in Berlin, zu gefallen schien. Jensen reflektiert über die besondere Attraktivität der Weimarer Republik für seine Geschichten. Sein Interesse an dieser Epoche, die er als eine großartige Chance für Deutschland betrachtet, regt ihn dazu an, die Parallelen zwischen der damaligen Zeit und der modernen Gesellschaft zu untersuchen. Jensen betont die Wichtigkeit, aus der Geschichte zu lernen, und verknüpft sein literarisches Werk mit historischen Fakten. Insbesondere die Figuren, die er in seinen Romanen präsentiert, haben oft reale historische Vorbilder oder sind in einem historisch korrekten Rahmen gestaltet, was die Fiktion und die Realität ineinander verweben lässt. This week I had the privilege and pleasure of talking with Pastor Michael Neely, a man whose faith, courage, and resilience were tested in living his own personal marriage; that 15-year marriage nearly cost him his life. Michael now channels his pain into advocacy and works to turn churches into safe spaces and mentoring victims who once felt voiceless. It was an amazing day for me when Johnny Braun sent me a DM on Instagram. It was short, it was succinct, and it made me want to talk to him. Here's what he said: “Hey there Dave, if you're looking for another person to be on your podcast, I'd like to be on an episode. I experienced childhood sexual abuse.” That was it…that's what started an amazing conversation, and my decision to have him as a guest today. I could go on and on about how amazing I know Johnny is. But I think he would rather I tell you about what I know about male sexual assault as a “thing” that needs to be talked about more; because Johnny agrees with me: we need to normalize this conversation. So, here's my short version of what needs to be said, and read, and heard, about male sexual assault and rape:  Sexual assault is often framed in most public discourse as an experience primarily affecting women, which is good and appropriate in a certain lens. But the reality is that men and boys are also profoundly impacted by these crimes—unfortunately, their stories remain drastically underreported and underrecognized. Here's a stat that should shock you: according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), approximately 1 in 6 men in the United States have experienced some form of sexual assault in their lifetime. While female victims often receive the bulk of media attention and resources, male survivors face unique challenges, including societal stigma, shame, and cultural expectations about masculinity that can discourage reporting or seeking help. Johnny knows this personally…all too well. You'll hear him talk about it. When we focus specifically on childhood sexual assault, the numbers are equally sobering…or better put: shocking. Studies indicate that roughly 1 in 6 boys will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18. These assaults frequently occur in settings where trust is expected—by family members, coaches, teachers, or other authority figures—and often go unreported for years. Male survivors of childhood sexual abuse are at increased risk of long-term emotional, psychological, and physical consequences, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, substance misuse, and difficulties with relationships and sexual identity. All of which, again, Johnny talks about.   Despite these alarming statistics, male victims—especially boys—remain largely invisible in conversations about sexual violence. Cultural myths that men cannot be victims, or that male survivors should “tough it out,” do nothing to help, but actually add to the systemic underreporting dilemma. Data from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center shows that only about 1 in 10 male survivors report their assault to law enforcement, compared with 1 in 3 female survivors. This silence is not a reflection of their experiences being less real or less impactful—it is a reflection of societal barriers that must be dismantled. By acknowledging, amplifying, and normalizing male survivors' voices, we can create a safer, more trauma-informed space where all survivors—regardless of gender—are believed, supported, and empowered to heal. And that's another step toward crushing rape culture in our society. Johnny wants his story to be a part of that step. Don't skip this episode. 151. C Kimberly Toms: From Victimization to Voice—Changing the System C Kimberly Toms. She's a survivor of rape and attempted murder, a filmmaker, writer, and business consultant. In 2013, a hopeful job move to Milwaukee turned into a harrowing ordeal when she was raped and stalked by a U.S. Department of State special agent who eventually also attempted to murder her. For the last 12 years, Kimberly has endured relentless trauma, systemic failures, and intimidation. The absolutely worst experiences, however, inspired advocacy; Kimberly created her documentary Escaping Fed and founded Not Just One, an organization dedicated to empowering survivors and driving systemic change. In this episode, Kimberly bravely and openly shares her journey of rape, survival, resilience, and transformation, highlighting the challenges survivors face and the urgent need for justice system reform. Her story is both deeply personal and profoundly instructive—a testament to courage, advocacy, and the power of speaking out. Three, the form of ceremony, with all its diverse manifestations in various cultures, usually simply called shaking, as explicated in Bradford Keeney's book Shaking Medicine: The Healing Power of Ecstatic Movement. We contrast this type of ceremony with a set of tendencies described by Louis Sass in his brilliant work Madness and Modernism: Insanity in the Light of Modern Art, Literature, and Thought. Sass argues that schizophrenia is a limit case—the most extreme manifestation of—perceptual changes experienced by all industrialized peoples. While its manifestations are extremely diverse, he claims the shared foundations of these perceptual changes are social disconnection, lack of agency, and loss of direct immersion in experience, in favor of analyzing experience—a turning of attention to attention itself. We examine how industrialization caused a steep decline in the ritual traditions of rural Europe, and a simultaneous building boom in psychiatric hospitals. If we know the world in three phases—intuition, analysis, and integration of the two—perhaps we can think of pre-modern politics, with qualifications, as the intuitive, and the modern, “scientific” conception of politics as the analytical. All that's left is the synthesis: a return to our bodies and shared reality, with all the wisdom we have gained in the first two phases.

Ariel Sorensen reached deep inside herself to muster the strength and fortitude to reach out to me to find out if she could share her gripping and harrowing tale of her rape and sexual assault during what was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime to South Africa. Ariel and her male companion, strangers in a foreign land, were offered nightly accommodations by an elderly couple they had just met. The couple's generous offer seemed harmless at first, but as Ariel recounts, it was part of a carefully orchestrated manipulation. Things got worse when she was invited to stay in a separate bedroom from her friend, a decision that, in hindsight, proved to be catastrophic. Ariel's is a story of trust betrayed: revealing the devastating reality that grooming tactics aren't just used on children—they can be directed at adults as well.          Ariel's narrative goes beyond the details of the assault itself, exposing us to her emotional aftermath and the challenges of navigating a foreign justice system. She bravely describes the complexities she faced while reporting the crime in South Africa, highlighting the systemic obstacles that many survivors encounter when seeking justice abroad. One of the most impressive elements of Ariel's experience is that she advocated for herself in ways she herself wasn't even aware she could!  And Ariels is another prime example of why I continually emphasize the need for trauma-informed care in these situations, as well as the vital role of support systems in helping survivors begin their healing journey. 147. A Repeat of Episode 43: Cashaye Barrera—An Episode Worth Hearing Again!   Sometimes life throws us a curve ball when we least expect it, and it changes the trajectory of the path we were on. That's what happened this week when a guest who was scheduled to record with me had some unexpected events thwart our scheduled appointment and we weren't able to record. So, I made the decision to do something I have yet to do on this podcast, and that is to repeat a past episode. It didn't take me anytime at all to decide which one: you are about to hear Episode 43 again: my adopted daughter, Cashaye Barrera. Cashaye's extreme courage and strength in telling her survivor story is evident and powerful, and I'm honored to be able to have you listen to this again. Please take the time to not only listen to this repeat episode, but also to re-read the notes I wrote for Episode 43: This week, I made a special request to my daughter, Cashaye Barrera, to be a guest with me on this show. I was pretty sure she would agree to do this…and she did. My confidence in her response was due in part to me knowing how passionate she is about getting justice for herself…in every legal, non-violent way possible. And because I know what a tenacious and strong personality she is when she's fighting for herself and for those she loves and cares for…like, her family. But mostly because she is passionate about helping others. Especially others that are suffering in ways she can relate to…like other victims and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Cashaye's sexual assault case wasn't taken seriously when it was reported to law enforcement. Even though she was able to present physical evidence that she was raped, the agency handling the case, along with the prosecutor's office, was much more interested in giving the benefit of the doubt to the suspect than to Cashaye; to believe his untruthful explanation for the existence of his semen on Cashaye's clothing, rather than her report of incestuous and forceful rape. This is, for the most part, across most of this country, sadly, standard operating procedure. Part of this standard, this common response among law enforcement and prosecutors, is the systemic disbelief of victims. And another huge component to the problem is blaming the victim. And while Cashaye is one of the fortunate ones that did not end up being arrested herself for false reporting, she was certainly not believed, and was told by law enforcement that she should listen to and obey the very person that raped her, and that person's wife  who knew the sexual assault was occurring, who were Cashaye's foster parents. Why is this process of disbelief, blaming, shaming, of victims, and the closure of rape and sexual assault cases without the perpetrators of these crimes being so much as confrontationally questioned about the report, let alone thoroughly investigated, so rampant, so systemic? Because…it's easier to not believe reports of sexual assault and rape than it is to believe these reports. It's easier because our human brains don't like to face the malevolence, the discomfort, the taboo, the ugliness, the messiness, the vulgarness…of rape. And because some men and women who investigate rape and sexual assault cases don't like the idea that what they do, sexually, in their own personal sex lives, could very well be construed as rape or sexual assault. It's easier to disbelieve victims; to blame victims; to shame victims, and to get them to recant their report.
