What if the goal of great leadership isn't to eliminate friction, but to learn from it? In this episode of LeaderChat, Maggie Sass, PhD, and Ross Blankenship, PhD, authors of Friction: How Tension, Emotion, and Change Reveal Better Leaders, join us to discuss what tension can reveal about leaders, teams, and the systems in which they work. You'll hear about: The three places friction shows up: within ourselves, between people, and within systems How leaders can help teams navigate tension without simply smoothing it over Why emotions can provide useful information during uncertainty The difference between unhealthy conflict and productive tension What can happen when a team becomes too frictionless How to recognize when the system, not the individual, is creating the problem Practical ways to respond more intentionally the next time friction shows up If you're navigating change, uncertainty, or tension on your team, this episode offers a different way to look at those difficult moments—and what they might be trying to tell you.

Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well
If you're the kind of person who is pathologically nice, physically incapable of saying "no," and constantly burning out to keep everyone else happy, you might actually have a Type C personality. Debbie Sorensen chats with psychologist Kore Glied and former Wall Street exec Anna White to break down how this conflict-avoidant, super-pleaser trait differs from Types A and B and why hiding your true feelings takes such a heavy toll on your health, career, and relationships. You'll hear Anna open up about her own experience grinding straight through maternity leave until chronic fatigue hit, how these habits usually stem from early criticism or neglect, and how you can change these Type C patterns with a simple SASS framework. Tune in to find out how to Spot your hidden rules, Accept your own worth, Sit with tough emotions, and Say no thoughtfully. Listen and Learn:What defines the Type C personalityAnna shares her personal story of growing up as a Type C personality and a cautionary story of how her "Type C" tendency to put work obligations above her own needs led her to work through a seven-week maternity leave How a personal journey through chronic illness and a chance discovery of the "Type C" personality traits How Type C personality traits develop, how cultural expectations and social rewards reinforce them, and how understanding these origins can help reduce feelings of blame and shame How Type C personalities are driven by guilt and recognizing the subtle patterns that prevent you from asserting your own worth How Type C personality traits can lead to unbalanced relationships, career burnout, and vulnerability to toxic dynamics in both the workplace and at home How Type C personality traits can impact parenting and healthThe practical "SASS" framework to build resilience and break people-pleasing habits Resources:https://thetypecpersonality.com/ Debbie's burnout appearance on the Type C personality podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6d7AIsfXM18njrNzZvd6Kd To preorder Kore and Anna's book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/006349244X Kore's Website https://www.drkorenissenson.com Anna's care package company, Rest & Heal: https://restandheal.comAbout Kore Glied and Anna White Dr. Kore Glied is a clinical psychologist based in New York City who specializes in helping adults manage anxiety disorders, including obsessive compulsive disorder, and insomnia. Most leaders are told to stay logical and remove anything that feels like friction. But real emotional intelligence in leadership starts with reading that friction, not erasing it.Dr. Mira Brancu sits down with organizational psychologists Dr. Ross Blankenship and Dr. Maggie Sass, authors of the upcoming book Friction, to talk about the emotional data most of us are trained to ignore. They make a simple case: friction is not a malfunction, it is a signal. The discomfort, the tension, the hard conversation you keep avoiding, all of it is information you can actually use to lead better. They get into why using AI to smooth everything out can quietly make your work vanish instead of easier and why leadership only becomes real the moment your decisions meet other human beings. If you have ever felt that leading people is harder than it looks, this conversation explains what is actually going on, and what to do about it this week.Subscribe for weekly conversations on leadership, burnout, and mental health at work.Find our guest here:https://www.tuesdayadvisors.com/ https://rossblankenship.substack.com/https://www.rossblankenship.io/https://www.talentsmarteq.com/articles/https://www.linkedin.com/in/maggiesass-phd/To find more of my work:

Brian sits down with Mark Redl for a look at his journey from running a family auto salvage business to becoming one of the longest-tenured figures on the Colt shooting team. Mark got his first handgun in 1981 and discovered competition shooting as a way to keep his defensive skills sharp. Nineteen years ago, a conversation at SHOT Show led to him shooting for Colt, and eleven years ago Paul Patale brought him on full-time as product manager. Over the years he served as law enforcement manager, worked closely with engineers on the return of the snake guns (Cobra, Python, King Cobra, and Anaconda), and became the primary firearms tester at Colt's facility, once putting 1,000 rounds through an Anaconda in a single day. Mark walked through how the new snake guns kept the retro exterior while modernizing the internals with a V-spring action, better metallurgy, and a machine-fitted hand that produces consistent trigger pulls. He also discussed Colt's transition after the CZ UB acquisition, which brought financial stability, new machinery, and modernization while leaving Colt's leadership, heritage, and Hartford location intact. Other topics included his years running the shooting team (from Maggie Reese through Wyatt Gibson and the Williams sisters), Colt's relationships with law enforcement agencies like NYPD ESU and LAPD SWAT, the manufacturing of the M4 (he recently held serial number 1,000,000), Academy graduation 1911s, single action army production tied to SASS, and the challenges of finding shooters willing to run single-stack 1911s. Mark also shared thoughts on the state of competition shooting, the aging demographic in USPSA, and the need for organizations like NSSF to develop a "first competition" program alongside their first shot initiative. He closed by confirming interesting things coming across all three product lines at the next SHOT Show and offered to send the Colt Python giveaway directly to the winner's FFL. Tashlich is the Rosh Hashanah custom of tossing bread or other small objects into moving water, to throw away our "sins" or our negativity. But today we're going to learn about something different — reverse tashlich, in which we remove our sins from the water. We'll explore the picture book biography, Diving Deep on Rosh Hashanah: Reverse Tashlich for a Better World by Rachelle Burk, which profiles Rabbi Ed Rosenthal and his Jewish scuba-diving ocean cleanup project, Tikkun HaYam, or Repair the Sea. text us if...This month we had the privilege of getting to know author and activist, Kelly Catlin. Kelly is the author of Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom, a charity-driven book that explores Kurt Cobain's legacy through interviews, research, and a focus on empathy, mental health, and advocacy. "In 2017, a month after my wedding, I lost my family member, Walter, a 33 year old Veteran Marine, to suicide. He was a lifelong Nirvana fan. I wrote this book to try and process that loss, and to hopefully remove the romanticism surrounding one of the most well-documented suicides of the 20th century. It's why I don't keep a penny from the book. Everything I do is to hopefully encourage open, honest discussions about mental health in honor of two amazing men. I never learned about Kurt, the musician, but Kurt, my friend's friend. It was an incredible experience, and one I don't take for granted. It's not a standard bio but a bio/memoir. In my book, Kurt is a lens to discuss larger, systemic issues and what we can do to help those who suffer in plain sight. Just a little context for the project and why the book exists. I wish I never had to write it, but I hope it can help someone. The back of the book is all mental health resources and hotlines to contact/free resources for those in need."There will be a regional book tour this fall when the book comes back out, and she'll be touring with a NJ-based band that focuses on inclusivity and positivity. The events double as food drives, so the goal is to really take the book and use it to help the community as a whole. Some organizations supported include mental health, suicide awareness, children's advocacy, animal rescue, and local food banks. What happens when a capable woman finally stops dimming her own light to keep everyone else comfortable? In this episode of Inner Voice of Knowing, Kaye Doran sits down with Cindy Kennedy — host of the Sass & Soul podcast and creator of the one-woman show Good Girl Gone Rogue — to unravel the good girl conditioning that mutes a woman's inner voice of knowing, and what it takes to back your own choices without apology. The rogue was never the problem. The good girl was the performance. Cindy was always an explorer, always the one who made rogue choices and questioned who got to be "the boss of her." But alongside that lived a quieter identity: the good girl who wanted everyone seen and supported, who would dim herself, so others felt comfortable. For years she could activate her voice instantly on behalf of other people, stepping into injustice without a second thought, yet found she didn't have full access to that same voice for herself. This conversation lives in that gap. She traces the moments that woke her up. The mentor who watched her perform and told her she'd always allowed other people to shine. The night at eighteen when her father gently asked enough questions that she finally let the weight out and felt lighter for sharing pain from her heart for the first time. And the workplace accident, on her dream job as an outdoor educator, where she knew something was unsafe, overrode that knowing to avoid an uncomfortable conversation, and carried the physical unravelling for decades after. The body keeps the record of every self-betrayal. What makes Cindy's voice land is how grounded it is. There's no spectacle here. She talks about reading what an animal needs the way you'd notice anything practical and obvious, and that same plainness runs through everything she shares. Her message to anyone who feels they've lost their way back: you didn't betray your voice, you simply tuned into a different frequency for a while, and it is always there to return to. The lessons still come whether you listen or not. The voice is patient. This is a conversation about untangling the subconscious false stories and beliefs that keep capable women small. About joy as a compass, and what it means to follow the thing that comes easily until you know it's yours. About authentic leadership, conscious living, and trusting the inner voice of knowing that was always there. As Kaye reflects, we can only ever be our most authentic self, and that core essence is the magic, never something to design away to fit in. For the woman who keeps making herself smaller to keep the room comfortable, this one lands deep. Cindy's Good Girl Gone Rogue show is touring WA, with a national and international tour to follow, and her debut book arrives at the end of 2026. Available on all podcast platforms. Website: www.cindymkennedy.com Tune into your inner voice of knowing. Make space for the mysterious. And notice what moves toward you when you stop forcing it forward.

Joe Sass is a school crossing guard in Chicago. One day after a huge rain, he noticed a 7th grader who arrived at the crosswalk that was submerged in deep icy water. Sass asked him if he would mind if he put him over his shoulder and carried him across the street. The 44-year-old guard did that and dropped him off on dry land. Nobody realized that WGN Morning News's skycam captured the event and it went viral. Some people started a GoFundMe campaign for Sass and raised over $10,000. Sass decided to give the money to local non-profits. Sass went the extra mile. The mile that means the most in life is the mile when you go beyond what is required of you. Are you willing to be a second mile person today?

This final instalment of Sass lays a strong foundation for our return to developing statically generated websites with Jekyll. We learn how to deeply customise and integrate Bootstrap into our own styles. As is often the case, Bart starts by describing the different techniques that can be used to customise Bootstrap with Sass, and then ties it all together with a worked example. We now have the tools to use Bootstrap, even if our website uses a content management system like WordPress. This week, Bart and I recorded the second half of Programming By Stealth installment 184. The first half covered the SASS basics, and in this half, we get to learn through a worked example how to write in SASS, which compiles to regular old CSS. He created a little web page with some wise and humorous quotes from notable people in history, and used everything we learned in the first half to style the page. As I told Bart at the end, it's great that he teaches us the foundation of these tools, but it's equally great to have a worked example where we can see theory in action, and reference these examples in the future. You can find Bart's fabulous tutorial shownotes for both Part A and Part B at pbs.bartificer.net. In our most recent installment, Bart taught us how to use CSS "variables" (custom properties) to customize Bootstrap to make your pages not look like every other Bootstrap page on the Internet. He explained at the end that you can take all of this quite a bit further if you learn how to use SASS (Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets). SASS is a preprocessor for CSS, which means it creates "normal" CSS but allows you a lot more flexibility in how to create that CSS. For example, you can even create lists and maps and loop over them just like a proper programming language. We get SASS for free with Jekyll so why not take advantage of it? There's a lot to learn about SASS, so we broke this topic up into two parts, but even this first "half" is a mammoth episode. Nothing is a hard lift, but there's a lot to lift! You can find Bart's fabulous tutorial shownotes for both Part A and Part B and the audio podcast for Part A at pbs.bartificer.net. As Bart says at the very end, Part B comes with a "health warning" as it hasn't yet been proofread!

Over the last several months, I've seen more and more chatter in my community Web Designer Pro about WP Umbrella – a new platform making quite the dent in the WordPress site manager space.Personally, I wondered how there was even room for a new tool for managing WordPress sites (updates, optimizations, backups, reporting, etc) when it's already a crowded market with tools like Manage WP, Main WP, Infinite WP, and many hosts that offer automatic backups, updates, reporting, etc.But it just goes to show…when you have a new, fresh, innovative tool that's customer-focused and is designed with best, modern UX practices, it can absolutely start to make waves in the market. That's been the story of WP Umbrella so far and in this exclusive interview, I got to sit down with their CEO and co-founder Aurelio Volle. We covered a lot in our time together, including:The opportunity that he saw which led him to start a WordPress website management tool in an already competitive landscapeHow they made it past the first phase of growth where most SASS companies dieWhy UX design and customer focus are more important than EVER beforeAuerlio's personal philosophy for vision and goal settingHow to run a successful online business of any size in today's marketAnd a whole lot more. It's not every day you get to sit down with the CEO of a major SASS product in the WordPress space so it was so cool to see and hear how thinks about vision, goals, customer service and product-market fit in today's competitive web design space!P.S. Big thanks to WP Umbrella for being a sponsor of our upcoming Web Designer PRO CON 2026 event! I took notice when members of my community started talking about the tool and their experience with the team/support behind Umbrella and I can tell you, they are the real deal! Great team and a SOLID product that I'm excited to keep a close eye on moving forward.Head to the show notes to get all links and resources we mentioned, along with a full transcription of this episode at joshhall.co/425
