The mountains of Appalachia have produced some of the most memorable music in recent memory. From Dwight Yoakam to Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson to Tyler Childers, plus up-and-comers like Brit Taylor and Leah Blevins, there's beautiful tunes in “them-thar hills.” Cait Justice's debut album Angel Teeth from sonaBlast Records offers a new entry in the fresh voices from Eastern Kentucky. The 20-something college student from Pikeville, Ky., now resides in Louisville. Within weeks of hitting town, she played a few open-mic and listening rooms, was recommended to sonaBlast's Gill Holland, and found herself recording a debut album in Louisville's famed La La Land Studios. Justice sat in with Frank and Falls on the latest episode of Roots Music Rambler to talk about her sudden insertion into the Louisville and Americana music scene, her background in music, and what it's like to be at the beginning of what promises to be a meteoric rise to music relevance. Frank and Falls also talk about the impact their respective mothers had on their interest in music and offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week. This week on the podcast we head east to Harlan, Kentucky. Interview with Entrepreneur & Philanthropist Gill Holland who is largely responsible for the success of the NULU area of Louisville. He has set his sights on Harlan, Kentucky as becoming the next Ashville, North Carolina. Why Harlan you ask? His grandfather is originally from there and he sees this tiny coal town being on the verge of tourist revitalization. So much so, his new business, the Harlan Co Beer Company is set to open there in the fall. He believes tourists will come for the beer and stay for the mountains. It's clear that COVID-19 will forever alter the way we view cities. On Tuesday's episode of Life Style Business,https://www.linkedin.com/in/brucekatz1/ ( Bruce Katz) and an all-star team from Louisville joined us to discuss urban development and the opportunity we have now to rethink how we develop Main Streets in a more inclusive way. Bruce Katz, Director of the Nowak Metro Finance Lab at Drexel University and co-founder of https://www.thenewlocalism.com/ (New Localism Advisors), promotes inclusive and sustainable growth of cities in all his work. Bruce shared his thoughts on how now is the time to rebuild cities with a greater focus on inclusive solutions. He shared that the “smartest people in the room are local” - and we should listen to those who know their cities best, while also fostering “a new interplay” between bottom-up and government initiatives. Bruce also reflected on the potential of https://www.thenewlocalism.com/newsletter/needed-main-street-regenerators/ (Main Street Regenerators) that can help rebuild the economy of any downtown, whether urban or rural. He conveyed that the combination of local and government collaboration will create both “product innovation and institutional transformation” with the hopes of this crisis resulting in a more equitable, civic-minded society. We were then joined by community builder https://www.linkedin.com/in/gillholland/ (Gill Holland), in addition to https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariah-gratz-067b223/ (Mariah Gratz) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/ashlyn-ackerman-134a8612/ (Ashlyn Ackerman) from http://weylandventures.com/ (Weyland Ventures), who are all leaders working on redeveloping the Portland neighborhood of Louisville. They shared the importance of historic preservation, green space, and “work-live-play” developments, especially in a COVID-19 world. Portland is the midst of a $35M project that will develop 22 acres in the neighborhood, and projects including a sculpture garden have continued through this shutdown period. Key Takeaways from Tuesday's Episode: We are at an important moment where we can create “replicable, actionable, scalable” strategies that will reinvigorate Main Streets across the country, which will be essential to the rebuilding efforts. Making sure there is room for bottom-up solutions will help us rebuild cities that are stronger than before. We will need to be intentional about community-building as evidenced by the success of places like Louisville, as community gatherings will remain an important part of neighborhood life, even in a new way. https://www.youtube.com/c/LaunchPadlptv (Life Style Business) is every Tuesday and Thursday at 12pm PT/ 2pm CT / 3pm ET via https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ZidpquY3Ra-IBZ4_ie8WTg (Launch Pad TV). Have you ever wondered how Gill Holland got started? He built a company that The Hollywood Reporter named as one of the top ten movie production companies in New York City. He runs his own record label and music production companies with world famous artists. He currently runs another movie production company with multiple award winning films. And, if that's not enough, he and his wife spearheaded the revitalization of one of Louisville's coolest neighborhoods (NuLu). Now they're doing it again in the Portland area of Louisville with the Portland Investment Initiative. Often, you hear people joke that to make a small fortune in the movie business, you have to start with a large fortune. Is that what happened? The real story is much more inspiring and a great example to our local entrepreneurs! How to get started with no money? How to build companies with grit, tenacity, and sweat equity? How to make things happen because you believe in yourself and your goals? I really enjoyed learning how Gill got started, and you will too!

Holland is also the founder of the group Entertainment LLC, which includes a film production company, talent management division, music company, and art gallery. He has produced more than 70 feature films, including “Hurricane Streets,” the first film to win three Sundance Film Festival awards. Holland founded sonaBLAST! Records featuring CDs made from recycled plastics with cardboard cases. He has also authored two fundraising books for children and serves on many local cultural boards.
