What role do historic confessions play in the life of the Church today—and why should we care? In this episode we welcome Dr. D. Blair Smith, President and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC and author of Reformed Confessionalism (P&R Publishing). We explore the theological, pastoral, and spiritual value of the Reformed confessions—not as artifacts of a bygone era, but as living instruments for the Church's health and faithfulness. From the Church Fathers to the Westminster Assembly, Dr. Smith draws out the continuity and vitality of confessional Christianity, highlighting how confessions serve as tools for Christian formation, doctrinal clarity, and ecclesial identity. Topics include: Why every church is a “confessing church”—whether it admits it or not The relationship between Scripture and subordinate standards How confessions function pastorally and devotionally The dangers of doctrinal minimalism in the modern church How Reformed confessions express catholicity, not sectarianism Encouragement for pastors and churches seeking to recover confessional depth Whether you're a church leader, seminarian, or thoughtful layperson, this episode offers a compelling case for embracing confessionalism as a rich, living tradition that grounds the Church in biblical truth and historic continuity. Originally uploaded September 5, reloaded Sept. 12th. Chris Holman welcomes back Randy Thelen, President & CEO of The Right Place, Grand Rapids, MI. Economic Development Leaders for Michigan Unveil Top 10 Priorities for Statewide Growth and Prosperity Economic Development Leaders for Michigan (EDLM), a coalition of the state's premier regional economic development organizations, recently announced a unified list of 10 priorities designed to position Michigan for long-term growth, innovation, and prosperity. Representing regions that comprise 79% of the state's population and 84% of its gross domestic product, EDLM brings together leaders with over 225 years of combined experience in economic development. The coalition is committed to advancing strategies that will drive business investment, talent development, community revitalization, and innovation across the state. “A competitive economic development toolbox locally impacts all elements of a community — from small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs, to placemaking projects like farmers markets, and to successfully attracting brand-new investment and good jobs. The better funded and more robust our state economic development toolbox and programs are, the more revenue we will generate for the state, supporting the quality services we all want,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP). The Top 10 Economic Development Priorities outlined by EDLM include targeted investments and policy reforms across four key categories: Business Attraction and Retention Maintain Business Development Program at $100 million to stay competitive for job-creating investments. Adopt a performance-based, accountable withholding tax incentive to support impactful project attraction and expansion. Community Development Renew and fund the Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) Program at $50 million to support vibrant, place-based development. Renew and fund the Community Revitalization Program (CRP) at $50 million to reinvest in communities across Michigan. Modernize locally driven programs: SmartZone: Extend expiring TIF agreements by 15 years, with potential for additional extensions based on local approval. Transformational Brownfield Program: Simplify program access and remove funding caps to unlock more redevelopment opportunities. Fund the Regional Strategic Site Readiness Program at $50 million annually to accelerate development of competitive, investment-ready sites. Talent Maintain the Going PRO Talent Fund, emphasizing growth in advanced manufacturing and technology sectors. Establish a $10 million Regional Talent Attraction and Retention Fund to support locally tailored workforce initiatives. Innovation & Entrepreneurship Double the state's R&D Tax Credit to $200 million to encourage more private-sector innovation. Recommit to regionally led Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programming at $100 million, restoring funding to 2012 levels (currently $15.7 million). “This list reflects our shared vision for a stronger, more competitive Michigan," said Randy Thelen, President and CEO of the Right Place and current Chair of EDLM. “These are the smart, bold investments we believe will create economic momentum, attract and retain talent, and ensure every region of our state can thrive.” EDLM members urge state policymakers, business leaders, and stakeholders across Michigan to support and champion these initiatives as part of a collaborative strategy to secure Michigan's future economic success.

The foundation that supports Atlanta’s East Lake community, the East Lake Foundation, is celebrating 30 years. Show host Rose Scott talks with Ilham Askia, the president and CEO of the East Lake Foundation, about how the neighborhood — once overshadowed by crime, poverty, and crumbling infrastructure — was transformed into a thriving community. It’s now widely recognized as a blueprint for 25 communities across the nation through the efforts of the nonprofit, Purpose Built Communities. During the conversation, Askia reflects on the past, present, and future of East Lake, as well as the legacy of the late real estate developer and founder, Tom Cousins. It’s nearly 20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana and parts of the Gulf Coast. Now, a new report from the Brookings Institution's Center for Community Uplift pinpoints how “environmental injustices and climate risks intersect to undermine resilience in metropolitan New Orleans” from Katrina to the present day. Rose talks with Manann Donoghoe, a fellow at the Brookings Institution's Center for Community Uplift, who authored the report.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Downtown York is celebrating a major milestone in its journey toward revitalization — earning both state and national accreditation through the Main Street America program and the Pennsylvania Downtown Center. The recognition signals a significant accomplishment for Downtown Inc, the organization leading the charge to support small businesses, public art, economic development, and community safety in York’s core. “Accreditation is kind of the gold standard in downtown revitalization programs,” said Sarah O’Brien, Director of Downtown Inc. “York has actually been doing the work to meet those standards for many years. We just took a step back this last year and went through the process to get the recognition we’ve earned.” This is the first time in over a decade — since 2013 — that York has held the prestigious designation. Since stepping into her role in April 2024, O’Brien has worked to strengthen York’s ties to national revitalization standards and broaden the community’s participation in the process. “I worked for three different Main Street programs in Texas, and we always worked really hard to get accredited,” she said. “It was kind of a personal and team goal to get back on track with our reporting and demonstrate that we’re doing the hard work to successfully revitalize a community.” According to O’Brien, the accreditation recognizes a collaborative effort between local government, businesses, nonprofits, and private citizens. “Downtown Inc is that connector between small businesses, nonprofit organizations, government, and individuals,” she said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

President Donald Trump is signaling a shift in the ongoing push to deport immigrants as the reality of taking migrant farmworkers out of the fields, disrupting businesses and the country's food supply starts to become apparent. About 40% of the 2.6 million farm workers in the U.S. are estimated to be undocumented. A portion of those are Indigenous people from Mexico and Central American countries. We'll hear about how the Trump administration may be adjusting its stance. A search for words in their language led a husband-and-wife team to 300-year-old texts where French Jesuit missionaries documented Seneca names for traditional foods, cooking, and even recipes. GUESTS Mily Treviño-Sauceda, executive director and co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas Coreen Thompson (Tonawanda Seneca), cultural educator

The second and final episode of this arc take the story of the new steel navy to the beginning of the Spanish-American War. From the mid-1880s to the 1890s, the necessary infrastructure was put in place to expand the capabilities of the ships joining the fleet. Moreover, there was a shift in ideas on how to use the navy. Rather than focus on coastal defense and commerce raiding, thanks to the writings of Alfred Thayer Mahan, there was an interest in building larger ships that could wrestle the command of the seas from regional adversaries. Rather than concentrate on cruisers, there was growing interest in building what today we would know as battleships. This will be the final episode of this season before we move forward into thinking about the Spanish-American War. Have a question, comment, concern, or compliment?
