Life has ebbs & flows that you must navigate to reach your targeted goals. Deal with the grievous things that impede your progress of walking in God's blessings!
No matter the size of your ministry, everyone needs people right beside you taking on some of the load. In a church context, it's even more important - and Biblical - to have deacons. But do they even know what they are supposed to do and how to do it? And even more importantly, why? Pastor Jamie McClanahan talks with us in this Not Alone episode about how they are revitalizing their church through a health deacon ministry!

Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking!Josh Hayden, the author of Remissioning Church: A Field guide for Bringing a Congregation Back to Life, shares wisdom from his own journey—moving from church planting to leading a 158-year-old congregation—and he helps us understand the difference between revitalization and remissioning. He also talks about the power of what he calls “creative destruction” and reflects on the hope that churches and people really can change. If you are a ministry leader wondering how to lead your church through deep transformation and discovering a renewed mission, you'll find both encouragement and practical guidance in this conversation.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Josh Hayden explains that remissioning involves inside-out transformation of the church through discipleship for the sake of neighbors and the world.Revitalization focuses on refreshing existing programs, while remissioning addresses deeper, DNA-level transformation.Josh Hayden underscores the importance of listening first—both to the church and the neighborhood—before making plans for change.Markus Watson highlights the challenge new pastors face in established churches, including resistance, sabotage, and managing change.Remissioning leaders must exegete both their congregation and their community to identify gaps and opportunities for meaningful connection.Josh Hayden stresses that successful remissioning requires teamwork; pastors must not attempt change alone.Markus Watson reflects on the emotional challenges of change, including the shame spiral that can occur when a church confronts its shortcomings.Josh Hayden illustrates the shame spiral with an example of unnoticed “No Running in the Halls” signs that undermined stated values of hospitality.Remissioning involves inviting the congregation into a process of repentance, learning, and transformation, rather than imposing outside solutions.Josh Hayden shares how tradition-to-innovation means honoring a church's history while translating it into practices that serve current needs.Experiments in ministry should create shared experiences that allow for evaluation, learning, and adaptation over time.Josh Hayden describes creative destruction as embracing necessary endings so new life can emerge, drawing analogy from nature and industry.Effective change involves creating feedback loops, town hall conversations, and allowing time for the congregation to process and adapt. Not all experiments or changes need to succeed; failed experiments still provide valuable lessons for ongoing transformation.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Josh Hayden:Iwa Collabora websiteBooks mentioned:Remissioning Church, by Josh HaydenCanoeing the Mountains, by Tod BolsingerRelated episodes:16. Richie Halversen is the Director of Church Growth and Revitalization for the Southern Union, where he equips church revitalizers and lay leaders to maximize their impact in evangelism and church renewal. He has been married to his wife, Britney, for 25 years. They have four children: Kaleb, Hayley, Tristen, and Taylor. The Halversens live in the Chattanooga area and enjoy spending time together hiking, disc golfing, and playing games.
Perhaps one of the most prominent aspects of this period is the rise of the steel navy. After several decades of decline, the navy made a bold move and built a small fleet of steel warships. There was a growing, often fractious, political consensus that the navy needed to move forward. The move toward steel ships triggered the evolution of the American manufacturing base, slowly building the capacity to cast and mold steel, as well as build modern weapons made of the same material. We take the story up to the creation of the first four steel ships and will continue the expansion of the fleet in the next episode. Have a question, comment, concern, or compliment? In this episode we take a look at Harbor Defense in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. One of the most consistent missions of the US Army since the founding of the republic was defending the nation's harbors. The Civil War demonstrated that the granite of bricks of yore were outclassed by modern weapons. After a period of stagnation in the years after the Civil War, in 1886 Secretary of War Endicott released a plan for modern fortifications. While it took more than a decade to appropriate funding, these fortifications would defend the nation's harbors well into the twentieth century. Have a question, comment, concern, or compliment? Mark Clifton, Mark Hallock, and Dan Hurst discuss how pastors can navigate leading through changes early in their ministry at a church. Why “Don't change anything in the first year” is a bit too simplistic. Help your folks understand the “why” behind changes. Am I the right person to lead this change, and if not, am I better suited for a second-chair ministry?

Pastor Steve Estep opens our conversation with a powerful challenge: "Find what you're passionate about, a need that needs to be met. Roll up your sleeves and get at it." This perfectly captures the spirit of community transformation that drives both his ministry and this enlightening discussion on how churches can be catalysts for community revitalization. As lead pastor of Marion Church of the Nazarene for nearly eight years, Steve shares how his West Virginia roots and early resistance to ministry ultimately led him to Marion, where he's witnessed remarkable community transformation. The church's Celebrate Recovery program – now the largest in Ohio – stands as testament to their approach of doing life with people rather than for them, addressing the hurts and habits that often stem from profound childhood trauma. Our conversation ventures beyond typical church activities to explore creative facility usage – including a thriving partnership with a childcare center serving 150+ children – and universal leadership principles applicable in any setting. Steve articulates four essential leadership functions: defining reality accurately, solving problems effectively, serving people genuinely, and bringing consistent energy when everyone else is discouraged. His morning practice of asking "How's your heart?" offers a practical discipline for maintaining leadership perspective through challenges. What truly distinguishes this episode is our candid discussion of Marion's ongoing revitalization. Steve describes witnessing the city transform from "a place where people come to get high" to "a place where people find hope" through collaborative efforts spanning faith communities, businesses, and civic organizations. This partnership model, where ego and credit-seeking take backseat to genuine progress, provides a blueprint for any community seeking renewal.Whether you're leading a church, business, nonprofit, or simply want to make your neighborhood better, this conversation offers practical wisdom for bringing positive change through collaborative leadership.
