Valerie June was raised in Humboldt, Tennessee, just north of Jackson, and though she now spends a good deal of time in New York, she still has a place in Humboldt that's been passed down through her family. In 2018, Valerie was inducted into the Humboldt Hall of Fame, which she calls one of her greatest honors, and she often returns there to write music and reconnect with family. In 2021, the last time she was on Biscuits & Jam, Valerie was nominated for a Grammy for “Call Me a Fool,” which she recorded with the legendary Memphis singer Carla Thomas, and since then she's published a children's book called Somebody to Love and an interactive journal called Light Beams. She's toured with artists such as Dave Matthews and Tyler Childers, appeared at all sorts of festivals, and now she's got a fantastic new album out called Owls, Omens and Oracles, the title of which was inspired by a trip back home. Sid talks to Valerie about her experience with homelessness as a teenager, what it was like to meet and work with Mavis Staples, and her connection to her great-grandmother Bessie. We had an absolute blast hanging out with Luke Trimble and his bandmates during their visit to the Top Hill Recording Podcast—up there amongst the best hangs we've had in the studio. The laid-back energy, sharp senses of humor, and deep love for Appalachian music made for a great session.Hailing from Lawrence County and raised in Paintsville, Kentucky, Luke carries the weight of a rich musical legacy. Coming from the same small town that gave us legends like Loretta Lynn, Chris Stapleton, and Tyler Childers, Luke is the next in line to carry the torch—and trust us, he's more than ready. With a voice that grabs your attention and lyrics that cut straight to the heart, Luke brings something truly special to the Appalachian and Americana music scenes. His songs balance raw emotion with vivid storytelling, painting a picture of life in Eastern Kentucky—where heartache and hope are part of the same landscape.Whether he's performing solo or with his band, The Shake, Luke's authenticity shines through. He's got a rare mix of humility, grit, and undeniable talent. We can't wait to see where his journey takes him next, and we're proud to say we got to spend some time getting to know the man behind the music. Keep an eye on this one—Luke Trimble and The Shake is the real deal.
The mountains of Appalachia have produced some of the most memorable music in recent memory. From Dwight Yoakam to Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson to Tyler Childers, plus up-and-comers like Brit Taylor and Leah Blevins, there's beautiful tunes in “them-thar hills.” Cait Justice's debut album Angel Teeth from sonaBlast Records offers a new entry in the fresh voices from Eastern Kentucky. The 20-something college student from Pikeville, Ky., now resides in Louisville. Within weeks of hitting town, she played a few open-mic and listening rooms, was recommended to sonaBlast's Gill Holland, and found herself recording a debut album in Louisville's famed La La Land Studios. Justice sat in with Frank and Falls on the latest episode of Roots Music Rambler to talk about her sudden insertion into the Louisville and Americana music scene, her background in music, and what it's like to be at the beginning of what promises to be a meteoric rise to music relevance. Frank and Falls also talk about the impact their respective mothers had on their interest in music and offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 559 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Brian's wife pranks him and this legendary music institution is no more? Richard had some fun with his band this weekend which resulted in some horn related activity that made him smile muchly. What was your favorite 1980's theme tune? The guys discuss this, Brian's teenage sobriety, and finger pain. Richard also found a musical relic in an old email account and realized he had been hard on himself.Blake has a meltdown and talks about his early recordings. A music institution has seemingly disappeared and the guys look into it. Brian has said something that set a chain of events in motion with both positive and negative results. Brian offers some sage advice to the British King of Fuzz.We recorded on April 1st and we reflect on some of the hilarious (and not so hilarious) jokes on the interwebs. Meanwhile Brian's wife played a joke on him and he tells us all about it. It was Eric Clapton's 80th birthday and the guys discuss a somewhat controversial figure in the guitar world. Grace Bowers is on the show for Episode 250!! This amazing young artist has been enjoying a breakout year, having recently been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live and made her Grand Ole Opry debut on her 18th birthday on July 30!! Her debut album, Wine on Venus, is out now, and she has spent the summer sitting in with luminaries such as Dolly Parton, Tyler Childers and Gary Clark, Jr., and has been a featured guest at numerous festivals across the country. Grace talks to me about growing up as a shy kid in Northern California, having suffered bouts of anxiety, and how she was able to use her guitar skills as a means of expression in ways that surprised even herself. Having accomplished so much already, Grace tells me that it can be at times overwhelming, but at the same time, she has always expected this success of herself, but not perhaps as quickly as it has come. Hosts Dennis Strazulo and Tami Larson sit down backstage with a divergent group of talent at Sound Summit 2024, the annual music festival atop majestic Mt. Tamalpais across the Bay from San Francisco.Fresh off her releasing her debut album, Wine on Venus, and her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, rising Nashville star and Gibson Guitar endorsed phenom, Grace Bowers (Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge), chats about how she was influenced by BB King and her humble rise to prominence - from playing in her bedroom to appearing with Dolly Parton and Tyler Childers - and explains why she is not a prodigy! Demonstrating she has a mind and soul beyond her 18 years of age, Grace expresses what drives her - a profound hope and passion that her music makes people feel something - whether it makes them dance or feel an emotion. Super-soulful, Lech Wierzynski, leader of The California Honeydrops, who like Grace Bowers, returned to his Bay Area roots performing at Sound Summit - the band's first stop on their national tour promoting its new album, Keep on Diggin' - discusses the band's improvisational influences, the role of Spotify in the new music industry landscape, and the impact of the mentors who shaped his trumpet skills, and provides a peek into his iPod sourcing the playlist for the band's touring road trips, introducing listeners to an array of obscure, delightful music to add to their own playlists. Multi-talented James Wallace - aka, Skyway Man, delves into the eclectic inspirations of his music, originally sourced from his random discovery of mysterious letters in an abandoned motorcycle shop in North Carolina, filled with esoteric and UFO-related content, touching on the brotherhood of aliens and ascension to a fourth dimension. Wallace shares how his passion for storytelling through song remains unwavering, providing a glimpse into the mind of Skyway Man and an example of the resilience and creativity that drives artists to keep sharing their gifts with the world.CreditsSweet Little AngelPerformed by B.B. Aaron Perlut learned to play the guitar at age 47. That was just six years ago. Now, he's the front man for Atomic Junction, which dropped its first full-length LP earlier this summer. The St. Louis-based band's sound is not unlike many of its midwestern kin: A little country, a little punk, a little rock. And a lot interesting Perlut joined Frank and Falls on the latest episode of Roots Music Rambler to talk about the midlife start to his musical journey, recording the band's first album, their influences and more. The conversation was slightly different than others we have on the show. Falls and Perlut have been friends for two decades and even once worked together at Perlut's marketing agency, Elasticity. Falls claims to have known nothing about Perlut's musical focus until recently. Frank and Falls also share their much anticipated experience seeing Tyler Childers together as the Mule Pull Tour stopped in Chicago. They discuss Shooter Jennings' big Father's Day announcement that new Waylon Jennings recordings are coming in 2025. And, of course, they share their Pickin' the Grinnin' recommendations for music you should check out. We had the pleasure of interviewing Evan Honer over Zoom video!Singer/songwriter Evan Honer recently released his new album Fighting For through Cloverdale Records. The release is the follow-up to his 2023 debut West on I-10, which was met with sudden acclaim through sheer organic connection with audiences, garnering millions of streams worldwide, over 2.6 million monthly listeners, and leading to sold-out headline tours across the country and into Europe. That whirlwind period is captured on Fighting For. Co-produced by Honer with longtime collaborators Stephen Myers and Jon Notar, it's a coming-of-age record that asks hard questions and offers no easy answers. Instead, it embraces the conflicting swirl of emotions that come with early adulthood, from exhilaration to uncertainty. Evan Honer was still a college student in Southern California when his music — a mix of acoustic folk, indie-Americana, and alternative pop, delivered by a young songwriter who's never been afraid to blur the boundaries between genres — began earning a global audience. It happened fast. One minute, he was uploading performance videos to social media with little response. The next, he was a viral success, earning 50 million streams with his version of the Tyler Childers deep cut "Jersey Giant" and building a following with his original music. On graduation day, Honer released West On I-10, which quickly led to collaborations with Liam St. John, Wyatt Flores, Vincent Mason, and more, as well as sold-out shows across America and Europe. Fighting For captures the zeitgeist of 20something life during the 2020s. It's a soundtrack for young adults navigating the long road from past to present, looking to make some sense of the relationships, regrets, and romances they encounter along the way. Appropriately, Honer recorded the album on the move, finding small windows of time between gigs to capture these songs in small studios, churches, living rooms, and even AirBnbs. After the overwhelming success of West on I-10, he had opportunities to do things differently, including seven-figure offers from virtually every major record label, along with A-list Grammy-winning producers vying to work with a young musician who'd already earned 200 million streams on his own. Instead, he opted to turn them all down, stay independent, start his own label Cloverdale Records, and build a community of like-minded and hard-working artists willing to bet on themselves.Stacked high with acoustic-driven songs and plugged-in performances, Fighting For shows just how wide Evan Honer's musical reach can be. This is music for campfires, festival stages, and everywhere in between, delivered with a rare mix of urgency and poise. It's music rooted in Honer's personal experience, yet still filled with universal stories about punching one's way to the next round. This summer and fall, Honer will hit the road in support of Fighting For with dates that will take him across the US and Europe. Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeThe Food Stamps have been cooking onstage behind the redheaded songwriter pretty much since he left Appalachia and began touring as a full unit. These loyal road dogs have worn the rubber off the tires touring with Mr. Childers. First, they were strictly a live band enlisted to recreate and recharge the material from his first three studio albums Bottles and Bibles (2011), Purgatory (2017), and Country Squire (2019). But with the last two studio records—the triple-album, gospel-country opus Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? and last year's classic-meets-contemporary Rustin' in the Rain—the Food Stamps went from being his road-warrior comrades to eating big time alongside their leader onstage and in the studio. During Childers' headlining arena run and before his second sold-out night at the Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville, the Food Stamps' CJ Cain (acoustic/electric guitar/mandolin), Jesse Wells (electric guitar/mandola/banjo/baritone/fiddle), James Barker (guitar/pedal-steel), and Craig Burletic (electric bass/double bass) invited PG's Perry Bean inside their “living room” stage set. When we last chatted with them in 2019, the boys were burning through the small-club circuit with many of the same tone tools still in their rig today, but as venues grow and tours extend, gear needs change and the arsenal capacity increases. In this hour-long Rundown, we cover all their fresh friends, old standbys, and everything else these four buckaroos require to make music that matters. With a deep, resonant voice that exudes sincerity and grit, he has carved out a niche for himself in an industry that often favors the mainstream.Scott's musical style harkens back to the golden era of country music, drawing inspiration from legends like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings. His songs are steeped in the rich tapestry of Southern culture, with themes ranging from heartbreak and longing to love and redemption. With each note, Scott transports listeners to the backroads of rural America, where life moves at a slower pace and stories are passed down from generation to generation. One of Scott's defining characteristics as an artist is his unwavering authenticity. He stays true to himself and his roots, eschewing the trappings of commercialism in favor of honest, heartfelt songwriting. This commitment to his craft has earned him a loyal following of fans who appreciate his raw, unfiltered approach to music.Scott's career took off with the release of his debut album, "My Kind of Music," in 2005. Together, they co-wrote Combs' hit song "Out There," which became a fan favorite and further solidified Scott's reputation as a master storyteller.Beyond his musical endeavors, Scott is also an avid outdoorsman and a passionate advocate for wildlife conservation. He frequently incorporates his love of hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors into his music, creating a unique blend of country and outdoor lifestyle. As Scott continues to tour and record new music, his impact on the country music landscape only continues to grow. With his soulful voice, compelling songwriting, and down-to-earth persona, he remains a beloved figure in the genre, beloved by fans and respected by peers. In a world that often seems consumed by flash and spectacle, Ray Scott stands as a beacon of authenticity, reminding us of the power of music to connect us to our roots and to each other. Whether he's singing about love, loss, or life in the South, Scott's music resonates with listeners on a deep and personal level, leaving an indelible mark on the country music landscape.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.
There is a lot of discussion around education in society today. Does education always come from books? Can you find learning opportunities in unconventional places? Is an academic education better than hands-on learning? With the help of Cody Jinks and "Somewhere in the Middle," we break it down and share some of the life lessons we've learned working on the factory floor. Mentioned in This Episode: Country Cutler FIRST Robotics Competition Albert Einstein Quote Show Notes: The Dad Life Sound Check starts off the show with Dave talking about how he needs a vacation from the vacation. Then the kids transfer the virus to him and he is out of commission for a few days. Alabama and a date attending the Tyler Childers concert help pull him through the fact that he has to wear Astros gear to support his son's little league team. Megan Moroney reminds Mick that it is OK for our kids to do things differently than we would. 14:35 HARDY Report - "Truck Bed" goes to #1 and Mick thinks HARDY and Beyonce should do a collaboration. 19:17 Farm Boy Update - Mick's garden makes him happy but repotting 60 tomato and pepper plants takes awhile. 21:00 The Dads break down why "Somewhere in the Middle" is such a great song to illustrate that you can learn something from everyone and that doctors are not necessarily superior to world champion roller skaters. Is achievement culture really helping us raise our kids? The Dads share what their first jobs were and why everyone needs work in a restaurant or customer service at some point in their life. How important, if at all, is authenticity in music? Hosts E and Tank use Beyoncé's “Cowboy Carter” as a jumping-off point to dig into this slippery topic. How can you tell if an artist is being authentic? Is authenticity even possible in pop music? And so what if it isn't? There may be no clear answers, but it's definitely worth the discussion.
