Sociologist Arlie Hochschild has spent years talking with people living in rural parts of the country who have been hit hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs and shuttered coal mines. They're the very people President Donald Trump argues will benefit most from his sweeping wave of tariffs and recent executive orders aimed at reviving coal mining in the US. But Hochschild is skeptical that Trump's policies will actually benefit those in rural America. But Hochschild argues that Trump's policies will only fill an emotional need for those in rural America.In her latest book, Stolen Pride, Hochschild visited Pikeville, Kentucky, a small city in Appalachia where coal jobs were leaving, opioids were arriving, and a white supremacist march was being planned. What's the “pride paradox”? For all the efforts to understand the state of American politics and the blue/red divide, people have often ignored what economic and cultural loss can do to pride. Arlie Russell Hochschild argues that Donald Trump has turned lost pride into stolen pride and shame into blame, and that the result of his rhetorical alchemy has been to weaponize that shame and introduce a potent blend of anger and often violent rhetoric—undermining democracy and highlighting revenge. Hochschild's research for her book Stolen Pride drew her to Pikeville, Kentucky, in the heart of Appalachia, within the whitest and second-poorest congressional district in the nation, where its residents faced the perfect storm. The city was reeling: coal jobs had left, crushing poverty arrived, and a deadly drug crisis struck the region more powerfully than anywhere else in the nation. Although Pikeville had been in the political center 30 years ago, by 2016, 80 percent of the district's population voted for Donald Trump. Hochschild focuses on a group at the center of the shifting political landscape: blue-collar men. She had long conversations over six years with mayors and felons, clerks and shopkeepers, road workers and teachers, ex-coal miners, and recovering addicts. In some of the voices she listens to, Hochschild hears an alternative to the inchoate anger, as she and her subjects imagine a way we might build bridges and move forward. The update reflects changes made in April, which included the removal of several zoning categories to streamline the process. In August, city staff presented the map, followed by a public hearing on August 15 to gather resident feedback. Property owners were notified and given the chance to request changes; ten of these requests were incorporated into the final map. Key zoning districts now include Central Business District, General Commercial, Light Industrial, and various residential and mixed-use categories. The map also designates special use zones for governmental and quasi-governmental facilities. This effort was led by Community Development Director Kevin Turner and his team, who worked closely with residents to address concerns. STORY 2:  Canton Applying for Grant for Pedestrian Bridge The Canton City Council has approved a resolution to apply for a Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program Grant for the $6.1 million River Mill Pedestrian Bridge project, which aims to connect The Mill on Etowah to the Etowah trail network. The project includes a pedestrian bridge, put-in/take-out area for kayaking, and a paved trail, with a projected budget of $6,165,938.40. Funding will come from the grant, Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax, and impact fees. The bridge, designed with a concrete deck and prefab steel truss, is expected to start construction in mid to late 2025 and have a lifespan of over 75 years. The City also awarded a contract for the trail design to integrate with the bridge, with construction aligning for 2025. STORY 3:  Reinhardt Falters on the Road Reinhardt University's football team faced a tough defeat against Southeastern, losing 28-10 during a non-conference game in Lakeland, Florida. The Eagles, now 1-2, initially took the lead but failed to score in the second half due to costly special teams errors. The game was part of a challenging road trip, and despite a strong start, Reinhardt's mistakes, including a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, proved detrimental. Quarterback Stephin Craig completed 14 of 32 passes for 132 yards, with the team struggling in execution. The Eagles will host Cumberlands next Saturday at Ken White Field before continuing their schedule against Georgetown and Pikeville. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    Back in a moment  Break: DRAKE (CHEROKEE) STORY 4:  Public Hearing Set for Cherokee's Proposed $415M Budget The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is set to hold a public hearing today to gather resident input on the proposed $415.7 million budget for fiscal year 2025. The budget presentation will start at 6 p.m. at Cherokee Hall, Cherokee County Conference Center, followed by the hearing. The proposed budget allocates 54.1% to public safety, 20.5% to judicial services, and 15.3% to general administration, among other areas. Commissioners will review the budget for adoption during their regular meeting on October 1. Residents can view the budget details online for further information. STORY 5: Burt Jones Cleared of Criminal Intent Following 2020 Presidential Election Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has been exonerated by the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia after an investigation into his role as an alternate elector following the 2020 presidential election. Jones, then a Republican state senator, was part of a group that voted to cast Georgia's electoral votes for Donald Trump despite Joe Biden's victory in the state. The investigation, led by Pete Skandalakis after Fulton County DA Fani Willis was disqualified due to a conflict of interest, found no criminal intent in Jones' actions. The findings indicated that Jones acted on legal advice to preserve potential legal remedies for Trump amid election disputes. Despite other GOP electors facing indictments, no charges were brought against Jones, who used the same defense during his 2022 campaign for lieutenant governor. Waves of cholera epidemics ravaged North America and Europe, leaving victims in near-dead states. Mirroring the concerns of the time, rumors spread about people being buried alive, so much so that many “safety coffins” and other graveside alerts were invented and implemented to prevent premature burial for the most decerning, and wealthy, of the Victorian Age. One such tall tale is that of Octavia Smith Hatcher of Pikeville, Kentucky. Whose death and burial have become a staple of Appalachian folk history. Larry and Cheryl Webster may not be big recording artists or the kind of musicians that sell-out arenas around the world, but they are as important to the music industry and community as anyone that has ever come out of Eastern Kentucky. Their network of contacts and influence put them in the role of linchpin for many mountain and bluegrass musicians through the now six decades the couple has been playing, writing, performing and booking music. It just so happens they were the couple whose Friday night pickin' and grinnin' sessions gave one of our hosts, Jason Falls, his roots in loving roots music. So he ventured home to Pike County, Ky., and invited himself into their kitchen for a chat.  Larry and Cheryl headed up The Mule Band, a traditional folk, mountain and bluegrass group, for years. It has served as the house band, if you will, for Pikeville, Ky.'s annual spring festival called Hillbilly Days, on and off since the late 1970s. Larry would invite promising mountain and bluegrass artists to play the event which became quite an honor for musicians from the genres.  Larry is also a prolific folk and mountain music songwriter with credits on recordings by The Local Honeys, Guy Carawan and Nate Polly among others.  Cheryl is known for her ability to harmonize and comes from an extensive family of musical talent including her cousin Darrell Scott. She tells the story of how his song “You'll never leave Harlan alive” is about their great grandparents. The song had new life injected into its popularity when original recording artist Patty Loveless along with Chris Stapleton performed it at the 2022 CMA Awards. The Websters are also the grandparents of promising fiddle player Ella Webster, the current touring player in Cole Chaney's band.     In a bonus segment, Frank and Falls share a clip from an interview with author Amy Bizzarri, whose latest book The Best Hits on the Blues Highway: Nashville to New Orleans on Route 61 is fantastic.  Frank and Falls also talk about their daughter's recent music activity including Lollapalooza 2024, and the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. Seventeen-year-old Muriel Baldridge had the whole world ahead of her. She and friends had made the most of the June evening, going to a softball game, a movie, and then to the local carnival. They walked together up to the West Prestonsburg Bridge in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Immediately on the other side of the bridge was Muriel's home. She said she would be fine walking the rest of the distance on her own, saying goodbye to her friends, who walked back toward town and the carnival.
