Every once in a while, a filmmaker comes along whose story redefines what's possible. On today's episode, we meet Gough, the world's first legally blind filmmaker to write, produce, edit, direct, and star in a feature film. Based in Australia, Gough's journey isn't just about overcoming obstacles—it's about rewriting the rules of what it means to create. Through his production company, Beer Nuts Productions, he's built a thriving career in comedy filmmaking, releasing over a dozen films, multiple books, and audio projects, all while turning disbelief into admiration.Gough's career began with rejection. After writing countless screenplays and sending them to production companies, distributors, and investors, he quickly realized that most people couldn't see beyond his disability. “They knew I was blind and dismissed me out of hand,” he recalls. Instead of giving up, Gough did the unthinkable—he decided to make his own films from scratch. His first feature-length project, I Will Not Go Quietly, was a 90-minute documentary on disability and mental health. He shot, edited, and funded the entire film himself, interviewing experts, comedians, and teachers to shed light on how society perceives disability. It wasn't just a film—it was a declaration of independence and proof that storytelling is about vision, not sight. From there, Gough built momentum, producing a string of comedic short films that showcase his wit and unique storytelling style. Each project became a stepping stone for the next. Beer Nuts Productions evolved into a full-fledged creative hub, featuring 14 films, 7 audio downloads, and 5 books. His films—ranging from mockumentaries on the environment and fitness to satirical takes on the entertainment industry—reflect both his humor and sharp social commentary. “I just want to make people laugh and think,” he says. “Entertainment is about making people happy. That's why I do what I do.”Gough's success didn't come without challenges. As an independent creator, he faced the dual battles of production and promotion. While technology made filmmaking more accessible, marketing became the new battlefield. To stand out in a crowded digital landscape, he built a marketing team and launched campaigns across Facebook, Instagram, and traditional media outlets. His approach combines modern outreach with old-school persistence—podcast interviews, press releases, and direct audience engagement. “It's never been easier to make a film,” Gough says, “but it's never been harder to get it seen.”What makes his work even more remarkable is his hands-on directing style. Despite his visual limitations, Gough has developed an intuitive approach to editing and performance. He directs actors by focusing on vocal tone, rhythm, and emotion rather than facial expressions. “I can tell by the sound if the performance is right,” he explains. With a trusted crew who understands his creative process, including his longtime editor Simon, he ensures that every cut, cue, and line lands perfectly. The result? Films that are not only technically solid but emotionally precise and deeply entertaining.Beyond filmmaking, Gough is a storyteller, a humorist, and a living example of creative determination. He believes that ignorance about disability can be cured through education and empathy—and his films do exactly that. Whether he's producing mockumentaries about modern life or stand-up-inspired sketches, his work carries the same message: limitations only exist if you let them. From his first documentary to his recent comedy The Environment: The Real Truth, Gough continues to prove that filmmaking is an act of courage and imagination. His story is not one of pity or perseverance—it's one of power, laughter, and possibility.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

After years of rejection due to his disability, he took control of his creative destiny, launching his career with I Will Not Go Quietly, a documentary exploring disability and mental health. Gough proved that passion, skill, and determination—not vision—define a filmmaker.Over the years, he has produced 14 films, multiple books, and audio projects, all infused with his sharp comedic voice. Combining DIY filmmaking with strategic marketing, Gough has mastered both storytelling and self-promotion. His success reminds creators everywhere that limitations are simply challenges to be redefined. Mark Knopfler is a celebrated guitar player and songwriter. And while his voice may not win awards for being pretty, his world-weary story songs fit his oakey-mellow vocals perfectly. Sultans of Swing of Dire Straits eponymous debut in 1978 catapulted Mark and the band to stardom with gold and platinum sales around the world. Though their 1979 follow up also sold well it didn't sell nearly as well as the first. So the band made a couple of changes. David Knopfler, Mark's brother and DS rhythm guitarist, left the band for other pursuits. And instead of recording in The Bahamas, Mark, John Illsley (bass) and Pick Withers (drums) relocated to New York with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine. Jimmy's connection to Bruce Springsteen led to E Street Band pianist Roy Bittan joining the sessions and really giving texture, rhythm and soul to Knopfler's songs. Though the timeless Romeo and Juliet wasn't a hit in the US, it has become a classic in pop culture for romantic scenes. Expresso Love gives Mark a chance to rip a fun solo while sharing the spotlight with Bittan on Tunnel of Love, Solid Rock and classic rock radio staple Skateaway. My friend Beau Bledsoe, Artistic Director of the amazing nonprofit Ensemble Iberica, recently messaged me that Max and Josh Baca of Los Texmaniacs were coming to Kansas City for a show and wanted to come on the radio to honor the recently departed music icon, accordionist Flaco Jimenez.  I, of course, said yes!  They were delayed in getting to the station before I had to sign off but we were able to squeeze in the conversation and performance you are about to hear.Los Texmaniacs are the Past, Present, And Future of ConjuntoMusic. Conjunto music may be a familiar sound to residents of Texas, but its worldwide appeal can be surprising. Conjunto is a uniquely American musical genre, originating in South and Central Texas, that blends European accordion music with Mexican rhythms and instruments like the bajo sexto. Combine a hefty helping of Tex-Mex conjunto, simmer with several parts Texas rock, and add a daring dash of well-cured blues and R&B riffs, and you've cooked up the tasty Grammy-winning Los Texmaniacs groove. Max Baca is a legend on thebajo sexto, a twelve-string guitar-like instrument, and his nephew, Josh Baca, is fast attaining legendary status on the accordion, with those two instruments creating the core of the lively conjunto sound. I've been privileged to see this amazing group play inKansas City, Montreal and early next year in New Orleans alongside some of my wonderful friends in Ensemble Iberica and Making Movies.  They are committed to their craft whilepreserving and protecting the music they so dearly love.  Icing on the cake -  Max co-wrote a song with my number onepretend boyfriend Joy Ely.Enjoy this musical performance by and conversation with  Max and Josh Baca of Los Texmaniacs!

A true high point of the New Hollywood era gets the Kael Your Idols treatment this episode: Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon. We attempt to get to the bottom of this true tale of a robbery-gone-wrong by putting together the character's complex motivations piece by piece. Along the way we manage to show some love to Pacino, who puts in probably his best performance, and of course the legendary John Cazale as well.  Other topics include: early portrayals of gay activism, Lumet's book ‘Making Movies', and Johnny Wojtowicz: the larger-than-life figure at the center of the actual event.

From launching careers and creating timeless hits like "Flashdance" and the original "Beverly Hills Cop" – and its recent hit sequel, "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" – to the iconic dogfights in "Top Gun" – and let's not forget the absolute juggernaut that was "Top Gun: Maverick" – Jerry Bruckheimer knows how to make movies that hit hard and stay with you! With a career that spans over five decades and an eye-watering $16 billion at the worldwide box office, Jerry is not just a producer; he's practically a cinematic institution. His projects are all about that sleek style, that relentless energy, and that incredible knack for knowing exactly what audiences want. He's the force behind countless films and shows that have shaped modern cinema, a true visionary who understands how to deliver pure, unadulterated entertainment. And joining Jerry today, we have the visionary director who, in my humble opinion, is one of the most exciting filmmakers working right now! This is Joseph Kosinksi a director who's consistently pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling, known for his meticulous design, breathtaking practical effects blended seamlessly with cutting-edge CGI, and an incredible knack for capturing speed and intensity on screen like no other in "TRON: Legacy" , the sci-fi mystery of "Oblivion" and "Only the Brave" And of course, he absolutely blew us away with "Top Gun: Maverick".More recently, he directed the compelling Netflix sci-fi thriller "Spiderhead." Now, he's once again teaming up with Jerry Bruckheimer to bring us back to the racetrack for what promises to be one of the most immersive racing films ever made: "F1." C. Scott Votaw is the Assistant Vice Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, where he is responsible for overseeing the Georgia Film Academy. After growing up in Georgia and graduating from college, Scott packed his car and headed west without a plan. With no relevant experience in film and production, he eventually networked his way onto a crew as a runner. Just by being present and paying attention, he found a way to save the production money and was rewarded with an almost immediate promotion to second assistant director. That auspicious start launched him into what would become an incredibly successful 25-year career in the film and production industry. His big break, a job working for Saban Entertainment on its new and wildly popular Power Rangers television show, set him on a course to work with Hollywood legends including George Lucas and Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt. Then came his moment of reckoning. After building a career that was largely unplanned, Scott returned home to Georgia to care for a relative and try something new. He eventually networked his way into opportunities in education, but the timing was serendipitous as Georgia was in the process of building the infrastructure to support the growing film industry in the state. Thanks to Scott's experience in both education and production, and his availability and willingness to take on something new, he found himself in a position to help launch and run the Georgia Film Academy. In this episode, Scott shares his unplanned journey through the film industry, his tough decision to leave it behind and move back home to Georgia, and the incredible timing that set him on a course to transition from an industry insider to an educator at the highest level.
