“We use faith stories. We use testimonies to build bridges and diffuse tension. We recognize Christ in each other and each other in Christ.” - Rev. Dr. Casely EssamuahMerry Christmas, everyone! If you're listening in the US, you have probably hunkered down with a few extra blankets or your warmest coat to brave the cold front that has crippled nearly all of the country. But maybe it's a blessing. Maybe this is a great opportunity to take advantage of the time to slow down and spend quality time with friends and family. Ponder the Christmas story that hopefully will take you to a place of worship as we consider our newborn King. Merry Christmas from all of us here at Restoring the Soul.Today, Michael welcomes Reverand Doctor Casely Essamuah to the podcast. Originally from Ghana, Casely is the Secretary of the Global Christian Forum. He is a bi-cultural bridge builder with a heart to see the world united in Christ, loving and respecting each other to build the Kingdom here on earth. Michael met Casely while on a recent pilgrimage in Scotland, and they will recount some of their more insightful conversations. We hope you learn where the Church is thriving and growing in the world and what we all can learn from the church in the global south.HELPFUL RESOURCES:St. Cuthbert's PilgrimagePark Street ChurchSupport Dr. CaselyContact Restoring the Soul:- Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.comThanks for listening!

Now is the winter of our discontent... or is it the winter of our ecumenism? Either way, the mission-motivated drive to reconcile bitterly divided Christians has succeeded so well that all the frisson has vanished right out of it, but hasn't succeeded enough to actually make us one as Jesus and his Father are one. So in this episode, Dad and I talk through our own interest in and commitment to the search for Christian unity, what unity is not, how an ecumenical document differs from a confessional document, and the lively but relatively unknown history of this 110-year-old movement. Also, a few unguarded opinions. Support us on Patreon! Notes: 1. Tons of resources about ecumenism at the Institute for Ecumenical Research. 2. Some of the ecumenical documents we mention in this episode: Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, Healing Memories, Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry, Unto the Churches of Christ Everywhere, Mortalium Animos, Unitatis Redintegratio. 3. Not mentioned by name but highly relevant are the document Lutherans and Pentecostals in Dialogue and the new ecumenical outfit Global Christian Forum. 4. Dad on ecumenism: “Staying Lutheran in the Changing Church(es)” in Changing Churches; Luther vs. Pope Leo; “Scripture as Matrix, Christ as Content” in Luther Refracted; Luther for Evangelicals; “Theological Anthropology: Towards Integrating Theosis and Justification by Faith," Journal of Ecumenical Studies 34/1 (1997): 38–73; and “Process, Convergence, Declaration: Reflections on Doctrinal Dialogue,” The Cresset 64/6 (2001): 13-18. 5. Me on ecumenism: "Reflections Five Years into Ecumenism," "Six Ways Ecumenical Progress Is Possible" Concordia Journal 39/4 (2013): 310–32, entries on "Ecumenical Movement" and "Pentecostalism, Global" in The Oxford Encyclopedia of Martin Luther, and A Guide to Pentecostal Movements for Lutherans. 6. And heck, let's get the whole family in on the fun: check out my husband Andrew's book Here I Walk: A Thousand Miles on Foot to Rome with Luther tracing our pilgrimage on the 500th anniversary of Luther's. (Except it was the 499th... we found out too late.) 7. If you want to take up the catechetical call at the end of the episode, why not try the Small Catechism: Memorizing Edition? In the early years of this century, four groups formed a global grouping to share concerns within a dialogue framed by love and devotion to Jesus. This group would not make pronouncements or take actions. Instead, meeting every few years, we would face matters in an open and honest way about our respective witness. The four groups making up this “forum” are The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), the Vatican (Roman Catholics), the World Pentecostal Fellowship (WPF), and the World Council of Churches (WCC).

The Global Christian Forum is a recent development responding to a new situation among Christians. For more than a century, mainline churches, Catholic, Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox, have been involved in the modern ecumenical movement, and after centuries of division, have achieved new levels of unity and reconciliation. Together these mainline churches represent about 1.8 billion Christians. But a new development especially in the 21st century is that some of the fastest growing Christian communities in the world are Pentecostal (more than 600,000,000 million) and evangelical groups who have generally not been involved in the ecumenical movement, and in some ways have even been hostile to that movement. The Global Christian Forum (GCF) was conceived fifteen years ago, to bridge this gap by finding ways of bringing mainline Christian churches and growing numbers of Pentecostals and Evangelicals into contact with each other. The GCF is supported by the Vatican Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, the World Council of Churches, the Orthodox churches and many others. Increasingly the Pentecostal and Evangelical organizations are supporting it as well.
