I utplåningens tid.Selma Yousif Mesbahskrivpedagog och skribentLitteraturMartin Buber: Jag och Du. ÖVersättare: Andreas Ekvall. Polaris, 2024. This is a reupload of the Internet Kids podcast in honor of the life of Ben Bader. Ben was one of my best friends and he was such a light in this world. Ben tragically passed away on October 23, 2025. This podcast was started by Ben and Harry to share the stories of our friends as we all built online businesses. Ben was a phenomenal writer, marketer, and friend. He lived by a simple philosophy: work hard to build your dream life and have fun with people you love. To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement — the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Professor Ben Nathans — is perhaps the sharpest, richest, and funniest account of the Soviet dissident movement ever written. Today, we'll interview Nathans alongside the legendary Ian Johnson, whose recent book Sparks explores the Chinese dissident ecosystem. We discuss… The central enigma of the Soviet dissident movement — their boldness in the face of hopeless odds, How cybernetics, Wittgenstein, and one absent-minded professor shaped the intellectual backbone of post-Stalinist dissent, Why the Soviet Union was such fertile ground for dark humor, and why humor played a vital role for Soviet resistance movements, How the architect of Stalin's show trials laid the groundwork for, ironically, a more professional legal system known as “socialist legality,” Similarities and differences between post-Stalinist and post-Maoist systems in dealing with opposition, Plus: Why Brezhnev read The Baltimore Sun, how onion-skin paper became a tool of rebellion, and why China's leaders study the Soviet collapse more seriously than anyone else. Today's episode is sponsored by Alaya Tea, cofounded by ChinaTalk listener Smita Satiani. Alaya Tea ships Indian teas straight from the source, and their products are 100% plastic-free. In this week's episode of then & now, we're joined by Benjamin Nathans, Alan Charles Kors Endowed Term Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, to talk about his recent book, To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement (Princeton University Press, 2024)—which was awarded the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction and the 2025 Pushkin House Book Prize. Ben offers an in-depth analysis of the Soviet dissident movement, foregrounding both canonical figures and a diverse array of lesser-known activists who contested the legitimacy of the Soviet state through a strategy of "civil obedience"—that is, by appealing to Soviet law itself. Drawing extensively on primary sources—including personal diaries, private correspondence, and KGB interrogation transcripts—Ben elucidates the intellectual and legal tacks that dissidents employed to expose the contradictions within the Soviet system. Ben situates the Soviet dissident experience within broader historiographical debates on human rights, legal studies, and the politics of memory, offering critical insights into the transnational significance of dissent under authoritarian regimes. Benjamin Nathans is the Alan Charles Kors Endowed Term Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches and writes about Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union, modern European Jewish history, and the history of human rights. His most recent book, To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement (Princeton University Press, 2024), was awarded the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction and the 2025 Pushkin House Book Prize. He has published articles on Habermas and the public sphere in eighteenth-century France, Russian-Jewish historiography, Soviet dissident memoirs, and many other topics. He is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books and the Times Literary Supplement.

Sue and Kendra talked with the Oxford, MA native about competing in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest! Last year Geoff ate 53 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. The men's world record is 76 hot dogs and buns, set by Joey Chestnut in 2021. Nathan's Famous will also make its annual donation of 100,000 hot dogs to the Food Bank for New York City prior to the event.
Historian Benjamin Nathans joins The Naked Pravda to discuss his new book, To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement (Princeton University Press, August 2024). In the post-Stalin USSR, when the regime seemed eternal and there was little tradition of resistance to totalitarianism, citizens who came up against the arbitrary Soviet justice system had to invent their own strategies for effecting change. Nathans looks beyond the familiar stories of figures like Sakharov and Solzhenitsyn to explore how the dissident movement coalesced, and what that history can tell us today.

This week, Josh Goldman of The Raging Nathans joins the pod to discuss the writing and recording of their 2025 single "The Grudge." Josh shares how the song evolved from a casual idea into a powerful track, shaped by thoughtful arrangement choices, layered harmonies, and even some intentional literary references. He also reflects on the recording process for the band's new album Room for One More, highlighting the impact of working with Matt Yonker and the collaborative spirit that drives the band. Along the way, Josh talks about balancing creative risks while staying true to The Raging Nathans' sound, the rewarding chaos of managing an independent record label, and the straightforward approach of his lyric writing. Tread Perilously's Cornucopia of Sci-Fi continues with an episode of Upload called "Strawberry." Nathan and Nora are still on the road returning consciousnesses of the departed to their families. Their latest stop brings them to a farm where pork and cheese are produced. Note the wording. While the parents of the departed prove folksy and nice, their world is anything but. Back in the "Afterlife," Ingrid realizes the Nathan she's seeing is not the genuine person ... even if it gives her another advantage on Tinsley. Choak also realizes there are two Nathans, but will he be able to put all the pieces together? Justin is alerted to another secret show. He also rallies against the modern meaning of "content." Star Robbie Amell proves to be unmemorable. Erik refuses to accept another member of the cast as anything other than his most memorable role. His criticism of The Disaster Artist adaptation also comes up. Justin champions Andor again. A different league of guest actors are suggested for the farmers. Erik forgets if a Baldwin passed away. Fantasyland rides become important. The pair try to figure out how pet names emerge. A new marketing angle is found. Justin gets completely lost in the episode and learns about the "Afterlife" live.

In this episode of Madison's Notes, host Laura Laurent sits down with historian Benjamin Nathans to explore his groundbreaking new book, To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement. Nathans offers a deep dive into the history of Soviet dissent, tracing the courageous efforts of Soviet citizens who risked everything to challenge the system from within, spanning from Stalin's death to the collapse of communism. By invoking the very laws of the Kremlin, these dissidents exposed the regime's internal contradictions, playing a pivotal role in its eventual downfall. The discussion focuses on key figures in this movement, from well-known Nobel laureates like Andrei Sakharov and Alexander Solzhenitsyn to lesser-known but equally vital contributors. Nathans also touches on the broader implications of their struggles for modern authoritarian societies today. Benjamin Nathans, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, is a distinguished expert in Imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, Jewish history, and the history of human rights. His previous acclaimed works include Beyond the Pale: The Jewish Encounter With Late Imperial Russia. Nathans is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books and is recognized for his expertise on Russian and Eastern European history. Benjamin Nathans is a professor of Russian and Soviet history at the University of Pennsylvania, with a particular specialty in the history of Russian and Soviet dissidents. He joined Lawfare Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes to talk about the legacy of Alexei Navalny, his life and death, and how Navalny was similar to and different from other dissidents, both recent and historic. They talked about how his death was related to the sham elections in Russia and the protests that he earned in response to those elections, whether there is anybody who can carry the flag that he bore going forward, and the future of the Russian liberal movement.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. On January 14th 2014, Nathan Maddox and his wife Crystal Maddox were walking into a Saturday service with Nathans 5 year-old daughter Maddie, at the Mt. Caramel baptist church. This specific day was going to be Nathans last supervised visitation visit with his daughter Maddie. For the past few years there had been a brutal and messy custody battle between Nathan and his ex-wife Kristen Westfall. Kristen had tried taking Maddie away from Nathan multiple times even though Kristen was proven time and time again to not be mentally fit to be a mother. Kristen enjoyed being in control of Nathan and so when Nathan and Crystal had raised enough money for good lawyers and won visitation rights, this sent Kristen into a rage. And on January 14th, 2014 as Nathan and Crystal were walking out of church service, both were shot dead in the parking lot. Police's main suspect was Kristen, but during her interrogation, police would realize, that Kristen didn't work alone. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
