The scene opens on a dusty street. Weathered wooden buildings with false fronts line either side of the street, as two gunslingers line up at high noon. A lone tumbleweed drifts across the street… which, actually, is the problem we're here to discuss today.  Tumbleweeds, also known as Russian thistle, are an invasive plant here in the United States. And for people in Central and Eastern Washington, they're a nuisance that can clog roads and pose a potential fire hazard.  So when reporter Anna King found that these invasive plants were being sold online as elegant decor – she was understandably curious about why. She joined Soundside to discuss her recent reporting on how tumbleweeds are managed, and how they spread so far. Guests: Anna King, reporter for the Northwest News Network covering Washington and Oregon mainly East of the Cascades. Shasta and Kim were colleagues and couple friends . . . then Shasta called her crying out of the blue. She'd had an affair, a divorce, and had been fired from her job. But while other friends and colleagues pulled away, judged, and disappeared, Kim and Shasta only grew closer. In today's episode, the two unpack how Shasta's personal crisis affected her friend and how their friendship survived when many of Shasta's relationships did not. Kim divulges the confusion she felt at Shasta not telling her sooner, and how others questioned her decision to stay friends with someone who'd had an affair. They talk about shifting from couple friends to developing a one-on-one friendship after Shasta's divorce. They also reveal how the experience helped them build their friendship now—one in which they can tell each other everything and endure any and every season of life together. In this episode, Shasta and Kim answer the questions:What did it feel like watching a friend go through a crisis? What happens when your “couple friends” divorce? “Weathered wounds” are composed of retroactive pains from childhood that combine with past and present relationship hurts. This results in a profound victim complex that can lead one to lean into the flight response as a way to avoid accountability and constructive criticisms perceived as slights. Questions: Does your pain, or unhealed wounds take priority over those of your significant other? “Is your pain in a silent competition with your significant other?” Does the perfect relationship victim exist? How does the perception of the “perfect victim” create relationship dissolution victors? What are “weathered wounds” and how do they affect the likelihood of relationship dissolution and/or reconciliation? Is it possible for the ego to convince you that your pain is more important than the relationship itself? How do we reconcile perception with reality when it comes to healing our pain and claiming our “victory” to be the dissolution of a relationship? In what way does the inability to digest and metabolize criticisms affect our overall growth and hope for enlightenment?

Air Date 11/26/2023 As the hottest year in 125,000 years or so begins to come to a close, we turn to two projects still in their infancy that have big plans to decarbonize our electricity generation on one hand and give us a bit more time to turn our climate futures around on the other. The first is a reinvigoration of the geothermal power industry with the hopes of scaling up globally and the second is geo-engineering which aims to reduce the solar radiation hitting the planet to reduce devastating climate impacts while the world finishes up the work of going carbon neutral. Both ideas are a little scary, either or both could be brilliant or disastrous. The two things that are clear to me are that failure in the face of climate chaos will definitely be disastrous and any ideas with a reasonable chance of helping deserve further study.
