On this Grief Refuge podcast episode, Founder and Host, Reid Peterson, shares a guest interview with you. His guest is Barb Higgins and she has a helpful perspective on giving grief a voice. She shares her journey publicly on her “A Thousand Tiny Steps” podcast and Youtube channels. One of the things that really stands out about this interview is her visual analogies for some of the harder experiences in grief. It made a lot more sense to have a metaphorical image to visualize when talking about the complex emotions involved in handling death related loss. Barb's insights can help validate you for being your true self as you grieve and heal. You no longer have to tell yourself you're supposed to think or feel a certain way or that somehow you're responsible for the comfort of others in your own grief. Enjoy the podcast episode. Reid is the creator of the Grief Refuge app and supports grievers through publishing daily audio messages that soothe and comfort people pained by grief.Grief is something Reid grew up knowing well. As a young adult, his biological father, who struggled with alcohol abuse, died by suicide. Fortunately, his stepfather came into his life as a child and was a positive influence. However, grief would strike hard when his stepfather passed away after a long, eight-year battle with cancer. And, Reid would learn, for the first time, the difference between grief and mourning. By the time his stepfather had passed away, he had also experienced the loss of friends due to cancer and suicide. However, it was the loss of his stepfather that would be the loss that would shape him to become a helper of grievers and strive to be the best husband he could be. We often underestimate our impact and influence on other people's lives. And, as a society, we don't make a point to articulate to others what they mean to us or the positive influence and impact they have. Grief cracks us open, but usually after losing someone we love. What if we challenged ourselves to be cracked open by the love we are given here and now? Then, reflect that back to those who give it by sharing, vulnerably, what that love means to us while the other person can hear it. Let this episode inspire you to share how much the people (and the love and positive influence they have) in your life mean to you. Reid Peterson (founder of the Grief Refuge app) opens up about how the grief from his father's death inspired him to start an app to help others through their grieving process.Link to app: https://www.griefrefuge.com/app
Technology has changed how we look at the world in so many ways. Information is available with the click on your phone or computer at any time of the day or night. Today's guest, Reid, worked in the field of technology for many years. Although his education background was in psychology, he never really felt called to work in psychology after college. When Reid was hit with his own grief after the deaths of his father and then his step-father, he got a first-hand look at grief. He began to feel a calling to help grieving people, not by being a professional counselor, but perhaps in another way. Reid started taking classes on ‘companioning' others in their grief. When giving a talk to his class about grief and guilt, Reid was told by a classmate that he should utilize his soothing voice on the Calm app in a way to help grieving, anxious people. Although he talked with the Calm executives about joining their team, it never went any further than a few conversations. Then a friend suggested starting his own app instead - specifically for the grieving community. Although Reid originally hesitated, it was honestly the perfect fit for him. By starting the Grief Refuge app, Reid merged his technology background with his passion to help grieving people. His goal for the app is to help people feel more empowered on their own grief journeys. Now over a year since its release, the app is doing just that. People have downloaded the app (on both iTunes and GooglePlay) from all over the world. To learn more, visit their website, griefrefuge.com. With new content added daily, grieving people can use the Grief Refuge app to help them walk through each day. Through using the app, people have ‘a safe and sacred space to explore grief related feelings learn helpful ways to cope, and find peace and purpose after loss.'
Reid Peterson is no stranger to grief and has had several, very different experiences with loss in his lifetime. Reid experienced death first at the age of 10 when a friend and classmate died of spinal meningitis. He went on to lose his biological father to suicide in 2006 and his stepfather to cancer in 2016. He felt compelled to help the grieving find peace and purpose after loss. Reid achieved a Masters Degree in Transpersonal Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in 2007 and is certified in Death & Grief Studies by the Center for Loss & Life Transition. He has since gone on to create Grief Refuge - the best mobile app to help you cope with the loss of a loved one. Filled with insight and wisdom for managing grief, it helps you understand what to do with your loss: physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Find out how Reid was inspired to create the app and how it can help you through your grief.Episode Highlights:Why Reid decided to become educated and certified in griefHow his experiences with grief have differedThe physical loss of a person versus the loss of a relationship you longed forSlowing down and listening as it pertains to griefThe six needs for mourningWhy meditation can be such a powerful resource for grieversThe healing powers of natureGrief Refuge AppConnect with Reid:https://www.griefrefuge.com/https://www.instagram.com/griefrefugeapp/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmcsIhVmqOQC1WjFnqOXu1Ahttps://www.linkedin.com/company/grief-refuge/https://www.facebook.com/griefrefuge**This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Reid's dad died by suicide in 2006, and his stepdad died from cancer in 2016. When his stepdad died, Reid thought he was good because he'd already experienced the loss of his father 10 years earlier. He couldn't have been more wrong, and struggled with loneliness throughout the journey to healing and integration again. From this experience, Reid felt a calling to help the grieving find peace and purpose after loss. He is the Founder and Content Creator of the Grief Refuge App. You can find more about the app, and Reid, on their website: www.griefrefuge.com. He also hosts the Grief Refuge podcast, which features reflective conversations and helpful information about grief, loss, and managing the process. Reid's Take-Away: If you're grieving and you are in deep despair, and you recognize repetitive self-defeating thoughts, you have the power to choose if you are going to believe those thoughts. In this episode of "Ask a Death Doula", I talk with Reid Peterson the founder of The Grief Refuge App. We have an insightful conversation about grief, what is is, how it works and what you can do to thrive through the grief journey. 2. Why Grief is so Complicated [8:49] – Grief is painful, and people want to avoid pain of all types – emotional pain is particularly complicated to deal with. Many people associate feeling this kind of pain as not normal and then crave a sense of normalcy in response. This can lead to premature dismissal of their grief. It leads to a lack of respect in our society for the grieving process – it can feel taboo or stigmatized. Even though pain is uncomfortable, it is a signal we receive to let us know something is wrong and we need to acknowledge it. We don't want to be in pain, but we have to recognize it and understand where it is coming from so that we can address it properly. Ignoring it is only masking it and giving it an opportunity to grow and transmute into something even more severe. Understanding your grief as a natural and expected response to loss allows you to sit with it, honor it, and identify the tools you have to eventually transform it and heal from it. Unless we're willing and courageous enough to sit with our pain and befriend it, we're never going to have the opportunity to transform it and move past it. 3. Bringing Back Rituals to End of Life for Healthy Grieving [14:22] – Incorporating rituals back into the processes of end of life and grieving and memorials can be extremely comforting. This can provide insight into steps for the next phases of life for those who are grieving. Rituals that are practiced with loved ones are even more empowering through the shared connection and experience. When families take time at the end of life when they have lost a loved one and really use that window of opportunity to be present and share stories with each other – it has an incredibly positive impact on the way their grief and bereavement journey goes from that point forward. There is no need to rush in the wake of a significant loss – realize that we will never have this moment again. Take it in, allow yourself to slow down, and process what happened and how you are feeling. Bringing back ritual is so important for this. 4. “Stuck” Grief [21:15] – “Stuck” grief is when someone feels hopeless, lonely or isolated, and feeling lost while going through the grieving process. It is defined by people who feel as though they aren't making progress in their healing – they start to feel that it will never improve. One of the most common things that happen at the end of life is people will wait for you to leave the bedside before they have their actual end of life. Often times, they will be unresponsive and in a sleeping coma for days and the brief instance that someone leaves them for a few minutes they pass away - and people come back and are usually riddled with guilt that they weren't there for the passing of their loved one. Just having the knowledge that this is normal can unburden people who have been carrying around guilt for decades of their life. Knowledge and education are two of the greatest tools we have to help us deal with the natural process of grieving and how we can move forward and heal from it. 5. The Grief Refuge [24:50] – The Grief Refuge is a hybrid organization that offers live services such as retreats and support groups for those who are grieving. Support groups are now online and focus on unique aspects of grief experiences. There are groups for different types of loss and specific experiences. There are also one-on-one “grief companioning” services offered. It is a heart-centered, and soul-centered approach to helping those dealing with the difficulties of coping with grief or going through grief overwhelm. The Grief Refuge also has an app platform for those seeking validation and comfort along their grief journey and so they can reflect and receive guidance. Memorable Quotes: 1. “Grief is a natural and expected response to losing something we care about.” – Suzanne B. O'Brien RN 2. “Right now, we are living in a society that treats death as optional. We have to really change our thinking here and bring death back into the natural fold of life because that denial creates a crisis when the time comes.” – Suzanne B. O'Brien RN PLEASE SHARE THIS PODCAST WITH A FRIEND!!! When we have loss in our lives, whether it's a death, breakup or other kind of loss, it's common to override the natural grieving process that is necessary for deeper healing. It often feels easier to distract ourselves from the pain, like turning toward food, drinking alcohol, over-working, having sex or whatever other avenue helps us to numb out. Yet, avoiding the myriad of emotions that come with grief tends to only prolong the pain. My caller today, Sunny is struggling with a huge loss of her own. Her mother recently passed away, and even though she knows she needs to grieve, she has been avoiding it. Her mother was also her best friend, so her loss feels even bigger and she has a lot of anger. She has been using food to suppress her emotions, and calls in wanting to learn how to separate food from emotions. She's gotten to the point where she is so disgusted in herself, that she believes she HATES food.As we talk, she becomes more aware of how she is using food as a distraction and a source of comfort, but is still not sure how to separate the two. She knows that she needs to grieve, but resists it and wants to skip over the process and see it as something to check off her to-do list, like she does everything else. Sunny needs to find closure, peace, and healing both from the loss she is feeling and the way she uses food. As we dive a bit deeper, we uncover the source of her pain, and outline some powerful avenues for her to express her pain so she can begin the healing process and stop using food to numb out.If you are experiencing loss or grief, or haven't allowed yourself to process your more painful emotions, this episode will provide a lot of insight on how to find healing. I am sure you will find Sunny's vulnerability and courage to take these first steps inspiring, and that this episode will enable you to begin to find peace with your emotions.RESOURCESIf you want some free coaching, be a guest on my show and let's work it out together and help you Come Home to what truly matters; book a session here.If you have been stuck in the vicious yo-yo diet cycle and want to break out of food prison and end emotional eating, then check out my 7 Step Food Freedom Guide: https://karmachow.com/food-freedom-guide/Find the book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Dr. Emily Nagoski here: https://amzn.to/2ST4nT0To learn more about how people grieve and the stages of grief, find On Grief and Grieving by Elizabeth Kubler Ross here: https://amzn.to/3ADrvGkFor grief support and daily healing prompts, download the Grief Refuge App https://griefrefuge.comCome join my FREE Facebook Group, Reclaim Your Wild: A Radical Self-Care + Self-Discovery Group for WomenFind me on Instagram: @melcostellocoachWebsite: https://karmachow.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/2004687/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/karmachow
On this week's show we welcome Reid Peterson. Reid has a Master's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology, and was trained by Dr. Alan Wolfelt from the Center for Loss & Life Transition. Reid works as a Grief companion, and has also launched the Grief Refuge App and podcast. After the passing of his stepfather in 2016, Reid spent time in local support groups. This influenced him to create a means of grief support on a larger, more broadly reaching scale. We loved our talk with Reid. His gentle demeanor and wisdom made for a very special conversation. Please download the Grief Refuge app, we can't recommend it enough. Thank you Reid, and to all you lovely folks out there, take care of yourselves and each other.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network.
