Since this week's livestream fell on Veteran's Day here in the US, it made Gwen and I think about ideas of sacrifice and honor. We set aside this day to honor veterans and the sacrifices that they made while fighting to defend this country. Military awards are often given as an honor for military heroism or outstanding service. Over a military career, a serviceperson might earn many such awards which can be displayed on military uniforms.  Grieving people go through many sacrifices themselves after losing loved ones. We lose not only our child but often our sense of purpose and security. We lose our hopes and dreams for the future. We may feel that life is hardly worth living. We certainly don't feel we deserve to be honored with a medal.  I honestly feel like some days I am just barely hanging on, but I was challenged by two different people this week. The first was my dear, sweet aunt Penny who has been like a mother to me since the death of my mom in college. After listening to last week's podcast with David Kessler, my aunt wrote, 'Marcy, what you have done on your grief journey fills my heart with love. I know you won't like me saying this, but you are my hero.' She was right, I didn't like hearing those words at all. I am not a hero. I can think of dozens of people who are heroes, but that certainly does not describe me.  Then Gwen challenged me again in this episode. She asked grieving parents to submit names for awards they could earn in their own grief journeys. All of the answers were amazing, but some of my personal favorites were the Changed Heart Award, the Best Fake Smile Award, and the Got Out of Bed Award. She then asked me what my award would be. I was quick to think that I really didn't deserve an award, but then I thought of Aunt Penny and being her hero.  If I am her hero, then maybe I do deserve an award. And if I can be a hero, then we can all be heroes. We may not have a special day or be able to wear a uniform covered with medals, but we can honor ourselves and each other because what we are doing is heroic, even if some days, we only earn the Got Out of Bed award.

Grief first entered Danielle's life when her dad was killed in a car accident when she was home from college for Easter. She had never experienced grief and said she felt paralyzed. Danielle went on and met and married her husband. When they decided to start a family, grief entered Danielle's life again when she suffered numerous miscarriages. She said it was a horrible and tumultuous time, but then Danielle and her husband had their daughter, Emily, followed 15 months later by their son, Blake. Grief seemed to have retreated for Danielle until Blake was 17 months old. Danielle remembers holding Blake as she was about to lay him down for his nap. She looked at herself in the mirror and thought, 'I am the luckiest mom in the world.' She laid Blake down for his nap and he never woke up. His heart simply stopped beating. His cause of death was listed as Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood. This time, the grief did not just feel paralyzing. It felt like the grief broke her completely, but Danielle did what she had always done and kept going. She was pregnant with her third child by then and even went on to have a fourth. Then, four years after Blake's death, something happened. Danielle realized that even though all of her adult life had been spent in grief, she did not really know how to grieve. She had never mourned her dad, her lost babies, or even Blake. She had tried to tuck the grief away and live with the pain in isolation, but she then realized that she had to actively experience the grief. She had to learn to love herself again. It was then that Danielle started journaling. Although difficult at first, Danielle began using journal prompts and eventually grew comfortable pouring her feelings out on paper. She sought out others on social media who had lost children so they could help support each other. She learned how precious it is to grieve with others in community. Now, eight years after Blake's death, Danielle has written her own grief journal, entitled, 'Gratitude Through Grief' (available on Amazon), and works to bring grieving parents together through her Instagram account @danielleduffeyy.  *Be sure to tune into this week's upcoming Livestream on Facebook and Instagram as Gwen and I discuss the importance of community in grief. Susan, your host, welcomes Reid Peterson to today's episode.   Reid, the founder of Grief Refuge, provides its community of users with a source of solace when they're in pain and discomfort from grief. The app is a hub that fulfills grievers' emotional needs. Support for people going through the grief journey is imperative for both the griever and their loved ones. When people are facing grief and go without support it ends up hurting more than it helps.   Grief Refuge content is created by Reid, MA. Reid achieved a Masters's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology (Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, 2007) and is certified in Death & Grief Studies by the Center for Loss & Life Transition. After losing his biological father to suicide in 2006 and his stepfather to cancer in 2016, Reid felt a calling to help the grieving find peace and purpose after loss.   Key Takeaways: Reid shares his own grief experience that started when his biological father committed suicide. Susan and Reid talk about the “gut feeling” both have about the death of their loved ones. Reid also lost his stepfather and he shares how he processed this loss. Reid talks about his sensitivity. Reid talks about The Grief Refuge, an app that provides daily grief support for people who have lost a loved one. Grief is not a mental health issue. No one prepares you for losing a loved one; someone has been taken away from you. There is no one way of grieving, everyone uses their own resources to navigate this difficult process. There is magic in the connection that grievers can have with each other. Suicidal ideation is unfortunately common among grievers. When you support someone who is grieving, what you say matters. Reid talks about purpose and how it can change in different moments in one person's life. It is hard to keep your faith when grief is consuming your energy. Reid suggests grievers keep on looking for more resources to help them in their grieving process; don't give up!   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com   Meet Reid Peterson The Grief Refuge app.

Reid is the creator of the Grief Refuge app and supports grievers through publishing daily audio messages that soothe and comfort people pained by grief.Grief is something Reid grew up knowing well. As a young adult, his biological father, who struggled with alcohol abuse, died by suicide. Fortunately, his stepfather came into his life as a child and was a positive influence. However, grief would strike hard when his stepfather passed away after a long, eight-year battle with cancer. And, Reid would learn, for the first time, the difference between grief and mourning. By the time his stepfather had passed away, he had also experienced the loss of friends due to cancer and suicide. However, it was the loss of his stepfather that would be the loss that would shape him to become a helper of grievers and strive to be the best husband he could be. We often underestimate our impact and influence on other people's lives. And, as a society, we don't make a point to articulate to others what they mean to us or the positive influence and impact they have. Grief cracks us open, but usually after losing someone we love. What if we challenged ourselves to be cracked open by the love we are given here and now? Then, reflect that back to those who give it by sharing, vulnerably, what that love means to us while the other person can hear it. Let this episode inspire you to share how much the people (and the love and positive influence they have) in your life mean to you. There's a risk in sharing grief and mourning on social media. The risk includes how vulnerable you feel and how that vulnerability is, or is not received. Negative comments may (and often do) happen, and when vulnerable, can cause a lot of pain and hurt. Is it helpful to share your grieving soul on social media? It's a question that has a lot of different opinions and answers. On today's Grief Refuge podcast, Reid Peterson has a conversation with Dr. Serign Marong about his grief journey and how he took the risk to post parts of his grief journey on social media channels like Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube.  This grief conversation is about as authentic as any grief conversation can be. Technology has changed how we look at the world in so many ways. Information is available with the click on your phone or computer at any time of the day or night. Today's guest, Reid, worked in the field of technology for many years. Although his education background was in psychology, he never really felt called to work in psychology after college. When Reid was hit with his own grief after the deaths of his father and then his step-father, he got a first-hand look at grief. He began to feel a calling to help grieving people, not by being a professional counselor, but perhaps in another way. Reid started taking classes on ‘companioning' others in their grief. When giving a talk to his class about grief and guilt, Reid was told by a classmate that he should utilize his soothing voice on the Calm app in a way to help grieving, anxious people. Although he talked with the Calm executives about joining their team, it never went any further than a few conversations. Then a friend suggested starting his own app instead - specifically for the grieving community. Although Reid originally hesitated, it was honestly the perfect fit for him. By starting the Grief Refuge app, Reid merged his technology background with his passion to help grieving people.  His goal for the app is to help people feel more empowered on their own grief journeys. Now over a year since its release, the app is doing just that. People have downloaded the app (on both iTunes and GooglePlay) from all over the world. Getting grief support can be a very difficult thing. You may find some available resources but they can come with strings attached. Often, people that are grieving feel like they have to be a certain way or they will be judged for what feels more authentic to them. Kind of like a “my grief must fit in this box in order to feel accepted in order to experience a sense of healing.” In order to heal and to re-integrate loss into life moving forward, grievers need to authentically express their emotions regarding their loss… And that includes all of the pains, confusions, and uncertainties just as much as the hopes, gratitudes, and rationalization to “move on.” On today's Grief Refuge podcast, Reid has an authentic conversation with Marian Boyd, Co-Author of a six-book series for navigating loss and grief. Reid and Marian share their experiences and earned wisdom regarding what it means to be a grief companion.  Grief companioning is special because it's one of the few experiences that invites grievers to be their authentic selves.  For more support and companionship on your grief journey, download the Grief Refuge app to get daily comfort, care, and compassionate inspiration to help manage grief (on iOS and Android).

Reid Peterson is the Creator of Grief Refuge, a mobile app that is a daily companion to people in grief. Reid's biological father died in 2006 and his stepfather died in 2016. After losing both father figures in his life, he sought support through community grief counseling and support groups. After realizing comfort and solace could be provided to grievers more consistently, he made the Grief Refuge app to provide support on a daily basis. Reid lives with his wife, Jessica, in Santa Barbara, California. Reid often shares his story of losing both father figures in his life and the grief that comes with living without those important people. Although he was not close to his biological father the way he hoped, Reid still grieves the relationship that he wished he had with him. After his loss, Reid found support through grief groups but wanted more consistent support. This led him to create a grief support app that offers daily audio messages to comfort grieving hearts, soothe anxious minds, and validate people on their difficult journey. Reid has created an open space for his clients to grieve through his companioning support model. This allows them to grieve in the way that's open for them without criticism or judgment. The process gives them the validation they need to work through the hard things and the tools they need to heal. You can find Grief Refuge by searching the name in your mobile app store. There's a term in grief support called “disenfranchised grief.” It means that your grief experience isn't accepted or doesn't fit in with the greater societal attitudes about how a death related loss is handled.  In essence, disenfranchised grief stops you from feeling fully supported. When you don't feel supported, the emotional pain progresses and you can feel more isolated and lonely. One aspect of disenfranchised grief is that of losing someone you didn't like. Whether permanent or situational to the time of their death, it's still disenfranchised.  You're less likely to get grief support when you grieve someone you didn't like or for something (a type of relationship) you never had.  On this episode of the Grief Refuge podcast, my guest Carol Schoneberg shares her perspective on the ways disenfranchised grief makes the process more difficult. Carol has grief counseled for over 30 years and continues to love her work each day. If you've felt lonely or isolated in your grief journey, perhaps your grief is being disenfranchised.  Please listen to our conversation for more support and deeper understanding. In this episode of "Ask a Death Doula", I talk with Reid Peterson the founder of The Grief Refuge App. We have an insightful conversation about grief, what is is, how it works and what you can do to thrive through the grief journey. 2. Why Grief is so Complicated [8:49] – Grief is painful, and people want to avoid pain of all types – emotional pain is particularly complicated to deal with. Many people associate feeling this kind of pain as not normal and then crave a sense of normalcy in response. This can lead to premature dismissal of their grief. It leads to a lack of respect in our society for the grieving process – it can feel taboo or stigmatized. Even though pain is uncomfortable, it is a signal we receive to let us know something is wrong and we need to acknowledge it. We don't want to be in pain, but we have to recognize it and understand where it is coming from so that we can address it properly. Ignoring it is only masking it and giving it an opportunity to grow and transmute into something even more severe. Understanding your grief as a natural and expected response to loss allows you to sit with it, honor it, and identify the tools you have to eventually transform it and heal from it. Unless we're willing and courageous enough to sit with our pain and befriend it, we're never going to have the opportunity to transform it and move past it. 3. Bringing Back Rituals to End of Life for Healthy Grieving [14:22] – Incorporating rituals back into the processes of end of life and grieving and memorials can be extremely comforting. This can provide insight into steps for the next phases of life for those who are grieving. Rituals that are practiced with loved ones are even more empowering through the shared connection and experience. When families take time at the end of life when they have lost a loved one and really use that window of opportunity to be present and share stories with each other – it has an incredibly positive impact on the way their grief and bereavement journey goes from that point forward. There is no need to rush in the wake of a significant loss – realize that we will never have this moment again. Take it in, allow yourself to slow down, and process what happened and how you are feeling. Bringing back ritual is so important for this. 4. “Stuck” Grief [21:15] – “Stuck” grief is when someone feels hopeless, lonely or isolated, and feeling lost while going through the grieving process. It is defined by people who feel as though they aren't making progress in their healing – they start to feel that it will never improve. One of the most common things that happen at the end of life is people will wait for you to leave the bedside before they have their actual end of life. Often times, they will be unresponsive and in a sleeping coma for days and the brief instance that someone leaves them for a few minutes they pass away - and people come back and are usually riddled with guilt that they weren't there for the passing of their loved one. Just having the knowledge that this is normal can unburden people who have been carrying around guilt for decades of their life. Knowledge and education are two of the greatest tools we have to help us deal with the natural process of grieving and how we can move forward and heal from it. 5. The Grief Refuge [24:50] – The Grief Refuge is a hybrid organization that offers live services such as retreats and support groups for those who are grieving. Support groups are now online and focus on unique aspects of grief experiences. There are groups for different types of loss and specific experiences. There are also one-on-one “grief companioning” services offered. It is a heart-centered, and soul-centered approach to helping those dealing with the difficulties of coping with grief or going through grief overwhelm. The Grief Refuge also has an app platform for those seeking validation and comfort along their grief journey and so they can reflect and receive guidance. Memorable Quotes: 1. “Grief is a natural and expected response to losing something we care about.” – Suzanne B. O'Brien RN 2. “Right now, we are living in a society that treats death as optional. We have to really change our thinking here and bring death back into the natural fold of life because that denial creates a crisis when the time comes.” – Suzanne B. On this week's show we welcome Reid Peterson. Reid has a Master's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology, and was trained by Dr. Alan Wolfelt from the Center for Loss & Life Transition. Reid works as a Grief companion, and has also launched the Grief Refuge App and podcast. After the passing of his stepfather in 2016, Reid spent time in local support groups. This influenced him to create a means of grief support on a larger, more broadly reaching scale. We loved our talk with Reid. His gentle demeanor and wisdom made for a very special conversation. Please download the Grief Refuge app, we can't recommend it enough. Thank you Reid, and to all you lovely folks out there, take care of yourselves and each other.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Good Grief with Cheryl Jones

What we create as a result of learning to navigate our grief is unique; a creative expression of our deepest lives. For Reid Peterson, creating the Grief Refuge app reflected his deep desire to offer a daily companion to people who had experienced loss. But first he had to work with his own grief for the two men who had fathered him; his father and stepfather. After each of their deaths, he chose to move towards the feelings he was having and find ways to support himself and, ultimately, to grow in compassion and self love. Now, he is committed to offering the same to others.
