Send us a text#34: This week on Rise Recover Live, Liz takes the mic for her first-ever solo epiosde, connecting with the listeners one-on-one.In this snack-sized conversation, Liz opens up about her personal journey with anxiety—her ever-present "companion" through life. Liz reflects on how anxiety showed up during active addiction, and how her relationship with it has evolved through recovery and age. Thanks to amazing friends, family, and clinical support, Liz has learned to recognize when anxiety tries to take the front seat. Where she once reached for a drink, now she reaches for the helpers—the people and routines that remind her she's not alone. Though anxiety may always be along for the ride, Liz shares how she acknowledges it, breathes deeply, and keeps moving forward. As parting words, Liz reminds us: you are not alone. It's okay to feel anxious, and it's okay to not want to feel that way. Remember to take a breath, because the greatest gift you can offer the world is to take care of you.Discover the app that connects you with community, wellbeing, recovery organizations, and thousands of recovery events at www.newform.org.Join the Rise Recover Live Podcast Space on the NewForm mobile app and connect with our Podcast community at https://links.thephoenix.org/kSRumor5GTb.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health or substance use related crisis, the following resources can provide immediate help.*If you are experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, please dial 911.- Dial 988 for the SAMSHA Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Send us a text#32: This week on Rise, Recover, Live, Liz and Bryce The Third welcome back Scott Strode, Founder and Executive Director of The Phoenix, for a long-awaited conversation.Since his last appearance on the show, a lot has changed—most notably, Scott has written and published his first book. In Rise. Recover. Thrive. he opens up about the cathartic, sometimes scary, and emotional process of translating his personal journey into recovery onto paper, while spotlighting the work of The Phoenix movement. Through the writing process, Scott reflects on what makes The Movement so powerful: the belief that those seen as "the problem" in society are actually the solution. By focusing on the strength in people and treating folks with dignity, we can all thrive and even reach back a hand to help those behind us.Now, nearly two decades since founding The Phoenix, Scott seeks to memorialize the ethos of this work. Even if The Phoenix isn't the one to ultimately transform how our society approaches addiction, the ideas can inform those who come after, aiding them in carrying the movement even further.Tune in to hear Scott's wisdom as we discuss what first inspired him to start this work, how that motivation has changed, and why thriving—no matter how distant it may seem—remains the goal, and much more.Learn more about Scott at www.scottstrode.com, and find his book at www.scottstrode.com/book or wherever books are sold.Visit www.newform.org to discover the app that connects you with community, wellbeing and recovery organizations, and thousands of recovery events. Send us a text#30: This week on Rise, Recover, Live, Liz and Bryce The Third sink back into the couch for a real one on mentorship—why we chase it, when we need it, and when it might actually be okay to skip it.For Bryce, mentorship has been non-negotiable. Whether it's recovery, business, or just becoming a better human, he sees guidance as a lifeline. Liz? Not so much. She's in a season of radical self-trust, choosing her own tools, her own path, and walking away from anything (or anyone) that doesn't fit.Together, they unpack what it means to seek wisdom without outsourcing your worth. Send us a text#29: Bryce The Third returns this week to reconnect with our podcast community and respond to questions from our listeners. One powerful question comes from Jim in New Jersey: "After a life of addiction, how do I rebuild my confidence?" While Bryce reminds us he's no expert, except in his own experience, he offers honest insight into what helped him regain confidence during his early recovery and beyond. Although it can feel overwhelming and like there is much to make amends for, Bryce reminds us that making reparations doesn't happen all at once. The first step is supporting your wellbeing and building that solid foundation of support. Now in his 12th year of recovery, Bryce shares that overtime he's learned that we have no control over how others perceive us. We can only control how we show up for ourselves and the folks around us.For Bryce, confidence has come from consistently working on doing better for himself and his community. Tune in as Bryce opens up about the challenges in early recovery, the lessons he's learned over the years, and how he's rebuilt his confidence.Check out the new version of The Phoenix mobile app, called NewForm: Recovery & Wellbeing: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/newform-recovery-wellbeing/id1513232300.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health or substance use related crisis, the following resources can provide immediate help.*If you are experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, please dial 911.- Dial 988 for the SAMSHA Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. In addition to recently earning her Master's in Health Administration, Calli pursues a variety of creative endeavors as an influencer, actor, model, entrepreneur, and passionate mental health advocate. At the heart of everything she does is a clear mission: to create meaningful impact. Episode Description: In this deeply personal episode of Life Talks with Lauren, I open up about the mental health challenges I've been navigating over the past month. From feeling overwhelmed and emotionally drained to moments where it felt hard to show up at all—I share what it's been like behind the scenes, in hopes that someone out there feels a little less alone. This isn't a polished, picture-perfect episode. It's raw, real, and from the heart. Because the truth is: it's okay to not be okay. And it's more than okay to ask for help when you need it. If you're in a tough season right now, I see you. You are not alone. You are not a burden. And this low point does not define your worth. Let's talk about what it means to give ourselves grace, to reach out when we need support, and to hold on to hope—even when it feels far away. Healing isn't linear, but better days are coming. What You'll Hear in This Episode: An honest check-in on my mental health this past month The shame we often carry around not being “okay” Why asking for help is a strength, not a weakness Simple reminders for anyone struggling with their mental health How I'm starting to feel a little better, day by day Connect with Me: Instagram: @laurenmkepler Email: lauren.m.kepler@gmail.com If this episode resonates with you, please share it with a friend or leave a review—it helps the show reach more people who might need to hear this message today.

In today's episode, we're diving into a habit we ALL struggle with: doom scrolling. Let's be real — we all do it, and yet we can't help but feel that pang of regret afterwards.
Trigger warning: We're diving into the heavy stuff related to mental health—stats, struggles, the works. If it hits too close to home, skip it and come back next week. I will not be offended. It's 2025, and Gen X (born ‘65–‘79, now 45–60) is wrestling a quiet crisis—too many of us are taking our own lives. Gen X men at a rate of 27–29 per 100,000, women at 7–8, both up since 2002. In this episode we unpack why—financial struggles, loneliness, physical & mental health issues—and how to fight back. I will share my own experiences and what I've learned and the steps I've taken. In a season like the one Bryce is currently navigating, having his community and his people around him is essential. He reflects on his early days of seeking sobriety 12 years ago and the challenges he faced in finding and accessing the right recovery resources.Liz, too, has recently found herself reaching for her toolbox more often, seeking out ways to stay connected. For years, she believed The Phoenix was the only recovery organization that aligned with her values of celebrating all pathways and emphasizing choice. However, through her work with The Phoenix, Liz has discovered a network of organizations that share this vision — offering help without dogma. As recovery evolves, so does The Phoenix platform. The mobile app is transitioning to include a resource hub, still centered on choice, safety, and accessibility and continuing to offer virtual and in-person classes. Everyone deserves access to care, community, and behavioral health resources. This week's guest is Michelle Vignault, who opens her heart about the unimaginable journey of losing both her brother to suicide and her husband within just six months. Michelle shares how she was suddenly thrust into solo parenting two daughters, ages 2 and 4 while navigating her own overwhelming grief. With raw honesty, Michelle reveals how writing became her lifeline—beginning as simple notes and evolving into heartfelt letters to her best friend before ultimately becoming her book, "Hold Back the Rain," titled after a meaningful Duran Duran song that resonated with her struggle to withstand life's torrential challenges. Despite eight years passing since these profound losses, Michelle vulnerably shares her recent unexpected grief relapse, reminding us that healing isn't linear, and even when we feel strong, grief can suddenly knock us off our feet. Our conversation tenderly explores how Michelle has broken generational patterns by creating space for open communication with her daughters. She uses honest, distraction-free moments to help them process their feelings while allowing herself to express her own sadness and anger authentically and openly. The poignant image on her book cover—capturing Michelle with her daughters as they release her husband's ashes—symbolizes their transformed family and the quiet strength they've discovered together. It offers listeners a touching testament to how families can find their way forward through devastating loss with love, honesty, and resilience. Michelle's story reminds us that while we cannot hold back the rain of grief, we can learn to dance in it, finding moments of connection and growth even in our darkest hours. Her journey inspires us to embrace vulnerability as strength and to recognize that healing happens in community—whether through writing, honest conversations, or the simple act of showing up for ourselves and our loved ones day after day. I sit down with Christina Keyes, a remarkable woman who transformed her life from a career-driven professional to a dedicated caregiver of her mother in 2013, after her mother nearly died of a stroke, only six months after the death of her father. Around this same time frame, Christina was also grieving the loss of a dear cousin who was responsible for Christina getting sober. However, the grief doesn't stop there. Christina was also grieving the end of a 17-year relationship as she knew it when her partner suffered a life-altering stroke, which resulted in him having to go into an adult care facility. Christina's story is about resilience, compassion, and turning personal grief into a powerful message of hope and advocacy. She shares the emotional rollercoaster of caregiving, from the sleepless nights filled with worry to the profound moments of connection with her mother. She opens up about the challenges of balancing her own needs with those of her loved ones and the unexpected blessings that emerged along the way. Her candid reflections offer invaluable insights into caregiving, grief, and personal growth. Now a national speaker and the founder of Keys for Caregiving, Christina aims to transform the caregiving space by connecting businesses and family caregivers to foster a supportive community. Her advocacy work amplifies the voices of caregivers, championing for change and understanding in a field often overlooked.Christina's story is an inspiring journey of love, loss, and the power of turning a mess into a message and a test into a testimony, as Christina says. Whether you're a caregiver, experiencing grief, or seeking inspiration, this episode is filled with warmth, wisdom, and the reminder that we can grow through what we go through.Tune in to discover how Christina's story can inspire your own path of healing and empowerment. This episode first aired on January 9, 2023.One of the many drawbacks of being a woman with human giver syndrome (Burnout 2020) is that we so often become an object in our lives instead the subject of it. In other words, we feel powerless to effect change and start to become more and more resigned to the life we have even when it is not one that is bringing us joy and contentment. In order to change this, we first must change our approach. We must learn how to have agency. To be the doer of things in our lives and not the people that things are done to. Take a listen and learn more about this key component to designing the lives we want to be living.Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle Paperback – March 26, 2019 by Emily Nagoski (Author), Amelia Nagoski (Author)Visit us at LearnToLoveYourStory.com DISCLAIMER: The content in this podcast and video is not a replacement for therapy and is not clinical, medical, or mental health treatment. I had the privilege of sitting down with Reese Zahner, a poet and writer who has beautifully transformed her grief journey into a powerful testament of healing and acceptance under the pen name Cleo Childs.Reese opens up about the profound impact of losing her mother to early onset Alzheimer's, a journey that spanned seven years from diagnosis to loss. Through her candid storytelling, Reese shares how she turned to poetry as a means to process her emotions. We delve into the complexities of anticipatory grief and the unique challenges of witnessing a loved one gradually slip away. Reese's honesty about her initial struggles with understanding grief and her eventual path to acceptance is both moving and inspiring. She speaks to the isolation she felt during this time and how writing became a lifeline, allowing her to express emotions she couldn't articulate otherwise. Her poetry, once a private refuge, has now become a beacon of hope for others navigating similar journeys. We explore the themes of presence, patience, and the lessons Reese learned along the way, emphasizing that healing is not linear but a continuous process.Throughout our conversation, her warmth and resilience shine through as she reflects on the gifts her mother gave her. Whether you're currently walking through a season of loss or supporting someone who is, her insights offer comfort and encouragement.Join us as we explore the healing power of poetry and the profound journey of love, loss, and acceptance.RESOURCES:WebsitePoetry on YouTubePoetry on SpotifyCONNECT:Contact FormSend Victoria a text message! Send us a text#19: This week, Liz and Bryce The Third dive into a very special and personal conversation about music, something that has always been close to Bryce's heart. For Bryce, music is an art form for self-expression, and it has helped him build a relationship with himself. When he got sober, Bryce thought he might never be able to experience music again — let alone create it. However, in recovery Bryce has created his own home within music, listening and creating the way he wants to.Liz also touches on her own relationship with music, noting how much like Bryce, music allows her to express her emotions in a safe, cathartic way — freeing the feelings that feel 'stuck.' Tune in to hear more about Bryce's journey, from his early inspiration by Eminem to rediscovering his love for music with his community in rehab, and now to sharing his artwork with the world.Check out Bryce's latest EP For Colder Weather streaming now: https://ffm.to/fcwor support by purchasing a digital copy through EVEN or Bandcamp Learn more about Bryce's music on his website: www.brycethethird.com/music.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health or substance use related crisis, the following resources can provide immediate help.*If you are experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, please dial 911.- Dial 988 for the SAMSHA Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
