Carmine Appice is a legendary drummer that's influenced many of rocks' most famous drummers.  He launched on the music scene back in 1967 as a founding member of the ground breaking band, Vanilla Fudge.  His storied career included launching Cactus, Beck/Bogert/Appice and playing with Rod Stewart on 4 of his albums.  You can find Carmine playing in numerous other bands and on nearly 100 albums.  In September of 2014, award-winning program director Ray White sat down with Carmine at his hotel to talk about several of Carmine's recording projects and his future plans at that time.  His latest albums are Guitar Zeus 25th Anniversary, Tightrope (Cactus) and Vanilla Zeppelin.  In our showcase segment, we feature a musician known as "Slowhand," - Eric Clapton.  His latest release is a live album, Nothing But The Blues, which features some of the blues' greatest songs, recorded at The Fillmore in San Francisco in 1994 during his "From The Cradle" tour.  Eric had won a Grammy award for Best Traditional Blues Album the following year.  This episode gives you two legendary musicians whose careers were heavily influenced by the blues.  The best of blues rock on The CAT!

Carmine Appice on his early days with Cactus, Beck Bogart & Appice, Vanilla Fudge and eventually working with Rod Stewart and co-writing "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act. Source CarmineAppice.netLegendary drummer Carmine Appice's GUITAR ZEUS is a compilation album featuring a who's who list of the best and world-renowned guitarists on the planet backed by his core band featuring Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder) on bass, Kelly Keeling (T.S.O., M.S.G) on vocals / keys / rhythm guitar, and Appice on drums.Originally released as two separate albums in 1995 & 1997 featuring Brian May (Queen), Slash (Guns N Roses), Neal Schon (Journey), Vivian Campbell (Def Leppard) Dweezil Zappa, Mick Mars (Motley Crue), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy) and many more! This new re-mastered album combines both releases as one complete version for the first time. It also features 5 brand new songs with Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Pat Travers, John Norum, and top Japanese guitarists RaiZi and Char.“The Guitar Zeus project was an amazing experience that has never been done before by a drummer, especially with so much talent on one album!” – Carmine AppiceSource CarmineAppice.netThis episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Rock Profiles adapted for podcast. Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. Legendary drummer Carmine Appice got his start in hard rock pioneers Vanilla Fudge. He’s played with Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd, backed Rod Stewart, and led bands like King Kobra and Blue Murder, all the while, setting a standard for rock drumming that’s unparalleled. One of his most impressive projects, is also his most under-appreciated. Guitar Zeus began as a pair of albums in the mid-Nineties, featuring a venerable who’s who of guitar slingers, including Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen, Queen’s Brian May, Bon Jovi’s Richie Sambora, Ted Nugent, Neil Schon of Journey, and many more. But, because of poor distribution and little label support, these great performances went largely unheard. Now, Carmine is re-issuing Guitar Zeus – all the tracks from the original project, plus some newly recorded ones – for a total of 32 songs. And it features some of the finest drumming of Carmine’s career.Appice also tells us how he helped a young John Bonham get started, plus the crazy story behind Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy,” which he co-wrote.
