By 1985, Motley Crue were in a tough place. Though they'd achieved success, wealth and worldwide fame thanks to their first 2 albums Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil, the band were suffering from some setbacks. Vince Neil had driven his Ferrari while drinking and caused a crash that ended up killing his friend Razzle Dingley of Hanoi Rocks. As he worked to stay sober and navigate his legal issues, Nikki Sixx was deep into a heroin addiction that forced producer Tom Werman to get someone else in to rerecord his bass parts. But Shout At The Devil went 4x platinum and the record company needed a follow up to keep the band's momentum alive and in the public eye. The result was Theater of Pain, an album the band in later years has said was too polished and they blamed Tom Werman (not their own substance issues or limits as musicians) for the end product. However, it resonated with the public and sold another 4 million copies thanks to the big radio hits and MTV videos Smokin In The Boys Room (a Brownsville Station cover) and power ballad Home Sweet Home. Theater of Pain is less raunchy than Shout At The Devil, a byproduct of the slick production. We felt the riffs weren't as killer as they had been and outside of the big hits their aren't too many standouts. Louder Than Hell is a heavy song more akin to Black Sabbath than typical Motley but was from the Shout At The Devil sessions and doesn't sound like anything else on TOP. Use It Or Lose It might feature Mick Mars best solo shredding effort with typical cliche lyrics. But the songs had the Motley Crue attitude, had a couple of radio friendly hits and they toured for 8 months around the world to propel sales and keep themselves in the public eye. It may not be our favorite Crue record but it's the one that got our attention back in 1985 and we give it our track x track review at 40. I went to Roberto Venn School of Luthiery in 1997. Worked at Vince's Backstage music in Lafayette, La. until 2000. I then moved to the Hamptons, which was a mistake for my career. Ended up working other jobs, as well as repair to pay the bills. 2002 Moved to Nashville and ended up working for a company in Franklin that did factory refurbishments and Warranty repairs. I also had my own small shop and did a little touring with small bands. In December 06 I started working for Gruhn and was there till Aug. 2024. Even working for shops I've always had my own shop to do personal customer repairs. At Gruhn, I was a Repairman and Appraiser. I was tasked with going through the Electric instruments to inspect for originality. One of the repairs I did a lot of was Pickup rewinds. I've been rewinding pickups since 1999. Although I got most of my experience at Gruhn. I started building Pickups around 05. I have built and rewound pickups for a lot of folks In Nashville. Mostly players. Issac Brock of Modest Mouse uses my pickups in the Wicks guitars he uses in the studio and on tour. One of the Tele's Jack White uses in the Studio has one of my rewinds in the bridge position.I've worked for Songwriters like Kent Blazy (Garth Brooks, Patti Loveless, Chris Young), and producers like Mickey Jack Cones (Carrie Underwood, George Strait, etc.). I've worked with Jack White doing repairs, customization, and Tour Support since 2010. The cover of one of his 45's features him, one of the guitars I customized, and the Muppets. Through Gruhn I worked on instruments owned by a myriad of stars. I also curate the Private collection of the CEO of Gibson, Cesar Gueikian. On the positive side, Gojira made history as the first metal band to perform at the Olympics, delivering a groundbreaking performance of "Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!)" alongside opera singer Marina Viotti during the Paris Summer Games. This unprecedented event not only showcased the band's talent but also elevated metal music to a global stage, earning them critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination. In contrast, Mötley Crüe faced significant backlash and legal troubles throughout the year. The band became embroiled in a high-profile lawsuit with former guitarist Mick Mars, who alleged financial misconduct and disputed his forced retirement from touring. Additionally, persistent rumors of the band using backing tracks during live performances divided fans and critics alike, tarnishing their reputation. Despite these challenges, Mötley Crüe attempted to push forward with new music, releasing their EP "Cancelled" in October, which received mixed reactions from fans. These contrasting events highlight the dynamic nature of the rock and metal scene in 2024, demonstrating both the genre's potential for innovation and its ongoing struggles with authenticity and internal conflicts." It is a little surprising that we have gotten this far into the podcast without featuring an album by Mötley Crüe.  This is a group that practically defined the hair metal genre of the mid to late-80's.  The band formed in 1981 in Hollywood, and featured both a party-oriented lifestyle and an androgynous look.  The core and classic members of the band were Nikki Sixx on bass and keyboards, Mick Mars on lead guitar and backing vocals, Tommy Lee on drums and backing vocals, and Vince Neil as front man.  Many other musicians would be brought in for sessions, and the group itself would change personnel over the years.  However, the classic lineup was still in place for their fifth studio album, Dr. Feelgood.  At the time, the group was facing conflicts that caused Producer Bob Rock to have each member record their parts separately.  This was also the first album recorded after the group started a quest to get sober and go through rehab.  Additionally, recording took place in Vancouver, getting the band out of the familiar (and seductive) L.A. scene. The result of these sessions was impressive.  Dr. Feelgood was the groups most successful album to date, and went to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, the only Crüe album to do so.  It was also reviewed positively by critics, receiving the award for "Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album of the Year" at the American Music Awards in 1991.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Bruce and brings us this excellent glam metal album of the late 80's for this week's podcast.Dr. FeelgoodThis title track peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Mötley Crüe's most successful single to date.  The song about a drug dealer chronicles the connection between LA Rock and drug use.  It has an infectious funky riff and a more sophisticated production which departs from earlier Mötley Crüe efforts.Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)The softer approach of this power ballad song are betrayed by its adolescent lyrics.  Bassist Nikki Sixx was inspired by a movie line to make this sarcastic song. It's tongue in cheek lyrics and reference to earlier Crüe songs make it a favorite at their live shows.  like fire, don't you ever take my name in vain."Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)This fifth single released from the album tells a comedic story of a boy meeting two girls, and by the end of the song the boy has been passed over while the two girls end up together.  Many of  Mötley Crüe's songs had lighter, humorous lyrics, which contributed to their appeal.Kickstart My HeartDo not play this song when driving through a speed trap!  The song is not about a relationship, but about Nikki Sixx's heroin overdose.  Sixx was clinically dead, requiring the paramedic to inject adrenaline into his heart to get it beating again.  This single reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Welcome Home by Willie Nelson (from the motion picture “Welcome Home”)This film starred Kris Kristofferson as a Vietnam War vet returning to his family after a 20-year absence. STAFF PICKS:New Orleans Is Sinking by the Tragically HipWayne turns to the college rock genre to start off our staff picks.  The Tragically Hip is better known in their native Canada than in the US, but their music is well worth a listen.  This song was recorded in Memphis, and has a delta blues feel, almost rockabilly.  The song was temporarily removed from radio playlists after hurricane Katrina broke the levies and flooded New Orleans.  Wait for You by BonhamIf you think that this song sounds like Led Zeppelin, you aren't the only one.  Rob features Jason Bonham's band.  Jason Bonham was the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.  Jason Bonham has a playing style very similar to his father, and recruited Daniel McMaster to the band on vocals - a singer with a sound very similar to Zeppelin front man Robert Palmer.  This is the main single from the debut album, "The Disregard of Timekeeping." Poison by Alice CooperLynch brings us a song from Cooper's eighteenth album, "Trash."  This song was a major comeback single for Cooper, his first top 10 single in the US in 12 years.  The song tells the story of a guy entrapped by a girl that he knows is wrong for him, but also someone he can't let go.Down Boys by Warrant Greg finishes the staff picks with another hair metal band.  This is the debut single from Warrant's debut album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich."  It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Stand On It by Jeff Beck with Terry Bozzio and Tony HymasWe close out with a guitar instrumental from guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck, accompanied by drummer Terry Bozzio and keyboardist Tony Hymas. Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, Mik Wanamaker and Mark Radulich present their Motley Crue Cancelled EP 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Cancelled is an EP by the American heavy metal band Mötley Crüe, released on October 4, 2024, through Big Machine Records. It is their first release with guitarist John 5, who replaced Mick Mars following his retirement from the band in October 2022.On April 19, 2023, Mötley Crüe announced that they had begun working on new music with record producer Bob Rock. Bassist Nikki Sixx released a statement a month later, stating that it had finished production and had begun mixing the new material. In July 2023, frontman Vince Neil confirmed that the band recorded three brand new songs. Two months later, guitarist John 5 confirmed the title of a new song as "Dogs of War", and also revealed that the band had recorded a cover of "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" by Beastie Boys.On April 23, 2024, it was announced that Mötley Crüe had signed a deal with Big Machine Records, and three days later the band released "Dogs of War", their first song in five years and their first with John 5. Neil told Billboard that same month that additional music from Mötley Crüe could be released by the end of 2024 or in 2025, but also stated that new material could result in "a few songs here, a few songs there" rather than a full-length album. Drummer Tommy Lee did not rule out releasing a new Mötley Crüe album, but stated that "recording and writing some stuff that you're feeling right at the moment and releasing it is, for us, a lot more a lot more fun and sort of a time stamp of where we're at right now." Sixx said that the band had recorded two other new singles that were ready to be released. On August 23, 2024, Mötley Crüe released their cover version of "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" as a single, and announced on the same day that a new EP, titled Cancelled, would be released on October 4.All of that plus video reviews of Motley Crue The Dirt, Motley Crue Dogs of War, Rammstein - Sonne, OZZY OSBOURNE - Shot In The Dark and Morbid Angel - God of Emptiness. All of that plus a discussion of Clown Core!Clown Core (stylized as ClownC0re) is an American musical duo. Seaside Pod Review (A Queen Podcast)

Once upon a time, there was a guitarist named Mick Mars. He practiced every day. He practiced every night. He got so good that a famous musician named David invited him to be one of the spiders from Mars. After recording and touring for years with the Thin Ziggy Starman, he wanted to challenge himself more musically, so he joined the highly sophisticated intellectual rockers, Mötley Crüe, who didn't have a shit name or a shit singer and a shit drummer. Mick became the most succesful guitar player in the world. Then he died. The end. According to Kev. If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Forget regrets" or possibly, "Hey guys, check out this fill!"Today's episode looks at the only Roger composition featured on Queen II, an ode to a dysfunctional maternal relationship, "The Loser in the End"NOTE: Skip forward to 16:43 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end is "Charisma Free" taken from Randy Woods Band's debut record. Such an honor to have Mick Mars on the show. His new album "The Other Side Of Mars" drops on February 23rd, and it's a killer record. The album really shows off different sides to Mick's musicality. It really takes you on a roller coaster ride. "Yeah, I wanted to see what happens. Lots of different styles, different things." He went on "I intentionally wanted it to be very diverse."  What's also different about this record is that Mick is more upfront than he ever was in the Crue. This is his project and he's the face of it. From the video treatments which are primarily black and white. "When I was in Motley I wrote for Motley. But with this, it's for me." He jokingly calls it "Mars"ley. He told me his heart is in the blues, but he didn't want to put out a blues album. He explained why that is. Mick also told me the moment he fell in love with music. He was very young! There are some musical heavyweights on this album. Starting with the producer, Micheal Wagener. This guy worked with Mick back on the very first Motley album. Then, he's got Korn's Ray Luzier on drums. He is an incredible talent. Mick described him with one word - awesome! I also asked him about collaborating with other artists. "Oh, yeah. I'm not sure with whom. I like to keep things fresh." He said he's already working on his next album. "I've already got, like, four really, really solid songs." As far as guests for his next album, he said he's pretty sure he'll have some on it. As far as albums he's credited on, I had to ask him about the Hear 'N Aid project he was part of in the 80s. From what he recalls it was fun. LOL He goes into that a little deeper.
