This week, we get songs and stories from the road from the one and only bassist extraordinaire: Mr. Billy Sheehan! We had the opportunity to chat with the icon about his adventurous musical journeys, cats, and deviled ham! Kevin was on the verge of imploding as this conversation completed his goal to have a chat with his holy bass trinity of Geddy, Squire, and Sheehan! Come discover more about some of the bands that Billy's been part of that maybe you aren't as familiar with!Wondering what this show is all about? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and place them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Kevin and Robert were both excited to have the opportunity to chat with the amazingly talented Billy Sheehan. After having a brief encounter with him involving potted meat a few years ago, we wondered if he would remember us. Check out his reaction and some great stories about his more obscure musical endeavors. Send Steve a Text MessageSpeed picking remains one of the most coveted guitar techniques, yet so many players approach it backward—focusing purely on velocity rather than developing the proper mechanical foundation that allows speed to emerge naturally. This comprehensive lesson breaks down the often-overlooked fundamentals of efficient, clean guitar speed. We start with a simple three-note-per-string pattern, analyzing how proper picking technique creates a natural flow between strings using alternate picking. The crucial insight lies not in how fast you can move, but in how relaxed and efficient your movements become. You'll discover how physical anchoring techniques dramatically impact your picking stability, why certain finger combinations (like 1-3-4) present unique challenges compared to others, and how to systematically build speed using both metronome work and the powerful "bursting" technique used by virtuosos like Yngwie Malmsteen. What separates this approach from cookie-cutter speed exercises is the emphasis on self-awareness during practice. Rather than mindlessly racing up and down scales, you'll learn to identify your specific limitations, address them methodically, and accept that progress often comes in plateaus followed by breakthroughs. The honest truth? Sometimes you'll sit at the same tempo for weeks before making a leap forward—and that's completely normal.Whether you're struggling with tension issues, inconsistent picking, or simply hitting a speed wall, these techniques provide both the physical framework and mental approach needed to transform your playing. Ready to discover what your hands are truly capable of?Be sure to check out GuitarZoom's YouTube page to see the video, if you need to visualize some of this topic! This week we continue our journey to the Great White North! This is the triumphant finale of our celebration of an amazing power trio from Toronto that has been largely forgotten in the pantheon of rock n' roll: TRIUMPH! From classic hard rock & metal to proggy AOR, this is a band that rarely gets the praise they deserve! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content has mentioned before as a band he would love to dive into deeper. While not the most obscure band we've ever covered (they have multiple platinum and gold albums in the US and Canada), they have been largely forgotten as the rock giants they once were. We think they should be remembered as titans or rock and thus: Huge-er-er!!! https://www.youtube.com/live/ivlpTQwoaw8?si=GkuN_JaP1fla7nza During an appearance on AXS TV's Vinyl Obsession podcast, MÖTLEY CRÜE's guitarist John 5 shared his love for VAN HALEN's iconic 1978 debut album and KISS's Love Gun. Speaking about Van Halen, he said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "I bought this just because the cover said 'Gene Simmons,' and he worked on the record. I remember putting it on, and this album gave me the biggest shock because of the sound. I was already playing guitar, and it was like seeing a regular car but then seeing a race car. Eddie's guitar playing really freaked me out. And with Dave's [Lee Roth] vocals, Mikey's [Anthony] harmonies and bass playing, and Alex's [Van Halen] drumming, it was just incredible. Without these four guys, it wouldn't have been the same." On what made Eddie Van Halen's playing so unique, John 5 elaborated: "I remember using Eddie's rig and realizing it's all in the hands. His attack and the way he played were what made him sound like Eddie. You can hit all the notes, but players like Eddie or Yngwie Malmsteen have a unique swing or attack that's impossible to replicate. That's what made Van Halen so special."

In 1987, the world of rock and metal was ruled by flamboyant frontmen and larger-than-life bands. But with Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani flipped the script. An instrumental album led not by a voice but by six strings, it captured the imaginations of rock fans and musicians alike, proving that the guitar itself could sing.Joe Satriani's Surfing with the Alien is often hailed as a milestone in instrumental rock, but its legacy isn't without debate. While many view it as a masterful fusion of melody and virtuosity, others see it as emblematic of a niche genre that struggles to connect emotionally with a wider audience. Released in 1987, the album showcased Satriani's technical brilliance and melodic instincts, but its reception reflects a mix of awe, skepticism, and nostalgia. The Story Behind the AlbumSatriani's journey to guitar stardom began modestly, teaching guitarists like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett while scraping by in California's music scene. After a lukewarm reception to his 1986 debut, Not of This Earth, Satriani poured everything he had—financially and creatively—into his follow-up, Surfing with the Alien. The result was a lean, melody-focused album recorded on a modest $13,000 budget that sought to balance technical guitar work with a broader emotional appeal. The album's comic book-inspired cover, featuring Marvel's Silver Surfer, hinted at the larger-than-life ambitions within. Tracks like the title song and “Satch Boogie” delivered on that promise with dizzying technicality, while the ballad “Always With Me, Always With You” showed a more tender, melodic side. These contrasts earned Satriani critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination, yet the album's broader appeal has remained divisive.A High-Water Mark for Some, Overindulgent for OthersFor fans of instrumental rock, Surfing with the Alien is a triumph. Its melodic hooks and memorable themes make it stand out in a genre often criticized for prioritizing flash over substance. Songs like “Ice 9” and “Crushing Day” blend technical mastery with accessibility, offering riffs and melodies that resonate well beyond the confines of the guitar-obsessed. It's an album that has moments of brilliance, where the guitar takes on the role of a vocalist, singing stories through its strings. But not everyone is moved by its charms. For some, the album represents the limitations of instrumental guitar music—tracks that, while impressive, can feel like exercises in technique rather than fully realized emotional experiences. The lack of lyrics and a frontman, which are often strengths for Satriani's fans, are viewed as barriers for those who find the album's tone more clinical than heartfelt. Surfing with the Alien's success in breaking into the mainstream is undeniable, yet its staying power with broader audiences remains a topic of contention.A Snapshot of a Moment in Rock HistoryReleased at a time when guitar gods like Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen were dominating rock, Surfing with the Alien carved out its own niche. Unlike the baroque complexity of Malmsteen or the blues-rock swagger of Van Halen, Satriani's approach was focused on melody and structure. While technically dazzling, his songs were crafted to stick in the listener's mind, often resembling vocal melodies translated to the guitar.Yet, the album's groundbreaking status also reflects a specific era. Its mix of virtuosic playing and synthesized production feels firmly rooted in the 1980s, which can be both an asset and a drawback depending on the listener. For those nostalgic for that era, Surfing with the Alien is a time capsule of innovation and possibility. For others, it may feel dated or too polished compared to the raw energy of vocal-driven rock bands of the same time. The Legacy of Surfing with the AlienSurfing with the Alien undeniably shaped the trajectory of instrumental rock. It reached number 29 on the Billboard 200, stayed there for 75 weeks, and went platinum—an astonishing feat for an instrumental album. Tracks like “Always With Me, Always With You” remain staples of Satriani's live performances, while “Satch Boogie” showcases his ability to blend technical prowess with funk-inspired grooves.Satriani's influence extends beyond his own discography. His teaching career helped shape the sounds of rock icons like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett, and his innovations—like pitch axis theory—continue to inspire guitarists across genres. However, the debates surrounding the emotional impact and relatability of his music highlight the challenges instrumental albums face in achieving universal acclaim.Surfing with the Alien remains a touchstone for guitar enthusiasts and a divisive topic for others. It's an album that sparks both admiration and critique—praised for its melodic ingenuity and technical mastery, but also questioned for its ability to connect on a deeper emotional level. Whether it's a groundbreaking classic or a niche curiosity depends on where you stand in the conversation about instrumental rock. For those willing to dive in, Surfing with the Alien offers a ride through the outer reaches of what the guitar can achieve. Whether it leaves you awestruck or searching for something more, one thing is certain—it's a journey you won't forget.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Crushing Day * 18:44 -Right Thru Me - Nicki Minaj * 23:29 - Ice 9 * 25:03 - Surfing with the Alien * 26:18 - Echo * 27:28 - Satch Boogie * 29:27 - Hill of the Skull * Outro - Lords of KarmaMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. Casandra Carson stops by on a tour stop to discuss her latest endeavor, Casandra's Crossing. This is an album that she released on the day the show was recorded with George Lynch. This is a fantastic new album that compliments the work she does with Paralandra very well. The response was so positive, and they enjoyed it so much, they decided to continue booking shows and writing songs. They recorded and released a homemade CD titled Rise Up; which sold over 1,000 copies at local shows. Shortly after, friend and local musician, Sawyer Rikard, joined the band on bass guitar in 2015, bringing their stage sound and performance to another level. In March of 2016, they released a follow-up EP, All Fall Down, which debuted #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. They soon began touring and being invited to festivals such as Rocklahoma, SXSW, Rockfest, Dirtfest, Loud in Lima, etc.In 2018, they joined forces with Legend Recordings, and released another EP, Ascension, which became their biggest release yet with singles “Back to Life” and “Killer Queen” landing on the radio. Shortly after, they added local powerhouse drummer (and childhood friend of Sawyer), Dakota Watson, to form the rhythm section Casandra, Paul, and Sawyer had always dreamed of. In 2019, they recorded standalone single “Love Will Win” with producer/videographer, Jake Jones, which gained even more radio play, and placed them on numerous national tours; supporting artists such as Tantric, Saliva, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dokken, and being added to the KISS Kruise and NAMM Show. The band continued to write, record, livestream, and perform wherever they could during the 2020 pandemic, and only continued to gain traction and fans from all over the world. Reaching out on a whim, they won over the attention of renowned producer/songwriter, Elvis Baskette, and shortly thereafter, entered the studio to record their first professionally made, full length album, Street Magic, in 2021. This release proved to be a monumental success, skyrocketing their audience with over 5 million views and streams across all platforms. Radio singles from this release alone include “For the Record”, “Despicable”, “Repeat Offender”, “Can't Quench the Fire”, and “Only Human”.Paralandra has since toured the country on multiple headlining runs, and is constantly supporting iconic bands such as Warrant, Lita Ford, Firehouse, Last in Line, and countless others with no end in sight. They reentered the studio with Elvis Baskette in 2023 and recorded their 2nd studio album, which is due April 4, 2024. They plan for this release to be just as big, if not bigger than the last, as they continue to record, write, tour, and work tirelessly to build their brand, and change the direction of rock music to be a force for good in this world.

Wickham to hear about an amazing opportunity to be part of his new horror film: Beginning Of The End. This film is connected to what we do here on InObscuria as it will have a metal soundtrack and includes some famous names like: Keel, Portnoy, and Romeo. Check out his awesome crowdfunding opportunities here: https://igg.me/at/BeginningOfTheEnd/x#/What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we get the inside scoop on things that make us SCREAM! Terry has some awesome stories about being both a lifetime metalhead and filmmaker. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new… and that you contribute to the making of this movie!
