Today on the Hot Jazz Network Podcast, Dave Lopez and George Cole announced an important benefit/fundraiser for the Jason Becker Creative Care Project. Jason Becker's story, if you haven't heard it, is one you'll never forget—a tale of brilliance, talent, determination, adversity, and ultimate triumph. A child prodigy on guitar, Jason rose to prominence as a teenager when he was one half of the legendary rock guitar duo Cacophony (with his great friend Marty Friedman). After wowing audiences worldwide with his amazing guitar skills and deep compositions, Jason auditioned for—and secured—the coveted position with David Lee Roth, following in the footsteps of Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. He wrote and recorded the DLR album "A Little Ain't Enough" and was poised to take over the rock guitar world when a nagging pain in his leg was diagnosed as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, a debilitating and fatal condition with a life expectancy of approximately five years.Jason did indeed lose the ability to play guitar, walk, talk, and breathe on his own. However, he never lost his will to live or his desire to create music. Communicating through a series of eye movements with a system developed by his father, Jason spells out words as well as musical notes and chords. He imparts his musical vision to his team, who then input the notes into a computer, edit the parts to his exacting standards, and generate charts for session musicians. Through this remarkable process, Jason composes his profoundly beautiful music, rich in melody and counterpoint, brimming with emotion. His inspiring music and life story have been the subject of countless news articles, magazine cover stories, and an award-winning documentary, "Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet."Not only is Jason still alive, but he's busier and more prolific than ever. His release, "Triumphant Hearts," showcases his gift for melody and deep knowledge of classical composition and orchestral arrangement. The album features Jason's signature, amazing guitar playing (recorded in the '80s and '90s) as well as performances by a who's-who of guitar virtuosos, including Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Neal Schon, Steve Morse, Paul Gilbert, Joe Bonamassa, and many others.Jason Becker isn't just an extraordinary musician; he's also one of the most positive, upbeat, and inspiring individuals alive. "I really feel lucky," says Jason. "I am surrounded by loving people, and I can still make music."DAVE LOPEZ Born in Chile, David Lopez's musical journey began when his brother introduced him to the world of guitar, rock, and Latin music. Growing up in Richmond, CA, Dave developed a passion for the diverse sounds of hip hop and heavy metal. Learning from the legendary musician and composer Jason Becker, Dave further honed his skills and later worked in studio management at the renowned Jackson St. Studios and Sound Wave Studios with artists ranging from 2Pac to Metallica. In 2003, he formed Flipsyde and toured worldwide with acts such as Snoop Dogg, Black Eyed Peas, and Busta Rhymes. Flipsyde's success included platinum and gold records, such as their 2005 debut album, "We the People" (Interscope). Their song "Someday" was chosen as a theme song by NBC for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games and appeared on the soundtrack for the 2008 film "Never Back Down."Jason Becker Creative Care Project Launch Party Fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM Baltic Kiss, 135 Park Place, Point Richmond, CA 510-260-0571 https://www.baltickiss.com/ https://jasonbecker.com/

We also have a beef brewing between Megadeth and Peter Frampton, but that one doesn't have legs. We also think Frampton can do no wrong. We talk about how Jeff Beck's legacy is living on with his wife and guitar tech bringing his guitar to his friends, like John Mayer & Billy Gibbons to play. Today is the 5th anniversary of Steve's book “Hard to Handle” and we talk about his writing process, while Nikki gets the full scoop on some of the stories that didn't make the final edit. Chicago-born guitarist Josh Ramos got an early musical start in life by playing in the church band before he ever hit double digits. Later in high school he formed and played in bands around the Chicago area. A year out of high school Josh formed LE MANS in 1983. This band recorded two albums, one on the Shrapnel Label and one with Columbia Records. It was during this time that Josh moved to the Bay Area of California and became associated with Neal Schon and his line of "Schon guitars". Josh joined THE STORM in 1991. The Storm recorded an album with Interscope Records and had a #3 hit with "I've Got A Lot To Learn About Love" and a #10 hit with "Show Me The Way", while giving tour support to Bryan Adams, Peter Frampton and Tom Cochran. The album was near gold and the band was established as one that could deliver radio friendly hit songs. The band received a Bay Area Music Award ("Bammie") for Best Debut Album and a BMI Award for airplay for "I've Got A Lot To Learn About Love". In January, 1997, Josh and Kevin Chalfant traveled to London, England to attend the "Frontiers Awards", and to accept awards for "Best Song" and "Best Album" for The Storm's second album "Eye of the Storm" (on the Music For Nations label). The album features songs like "Waiting For The World To Change", "Don't Give Up", "To Have And To Hold" and several others that possess the same quality and mass appeal as the first. Josh joined CA rockers Hardline for the 2nd album and recorded and played live with the band for almost 15 years. Beyond that Josh has been involved in other notable bands/projects such as Two Fires, China Blue, L.R.S. (Tommy LaVerdi, Josh Ramos, Michael Shotton) as well as releasing two solo albums and working with many great musicians along the way.*This podcast was conducted back in April of 2023 and presented on our YouTube channel but was never shared on the streaming platforms until now.

Escape was Journey's first album with songwriter and keyboardist Jonathan Cain. Journey now featured their classic lineup, with legendary singer Steve Perry on vocals, Neal Schon on guitar, Ross Valory on bass, Steve Smith on drums and the previously mentioned Cain on keyboard who replaced founding member Gregg Rolie. Escape propelled Journey into superstardom with legendary tracks like, "Don't Stop Believin'", "Who's Crying Now" and the dictionary definition of a power ballad, "Open Arms." With the help of shows like The Sopranos, Glee and more the songs have been intertwined with pop culture. The album has gone diamond, selling over 10 million copies and the album made it to Number 1 on US Billboard album charts. The album was produced by Mike Stone and Kevin Elson and is Journey's most successful selling studio album. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. Rock n Roll Hall Of Famer Michael Shrieve has had an incredible career behind the kit and his stories are amazing. I first saw him play in 1984 with the supergroup H.S.A.S. that included Neal Schon, Sammy Hagar and Kenny Aaronson. Send us a Text Message. The Voice Of Autograph, Steve Plunkett Talks New Long Awaited Second Solo Album,"Straight Up"#singersongwriter #autograph #steveplunkett #newalbum #straightup The year was 1984, the year of the cassette boombox and the Sony Walkman, and the year when a little band from Los Angeles invited the world to “Turn Up The Radio.” That band was Autograph, fronted by the fiery-haired powerhouse vocalist Steve Plunkett, and their single became an immediate smash hit from the debut album Sign In Please and was featured in numerous films and TV shows of that era.But as big as Autograph was, it could not contain the creative energy of Plunkett. He soon found a new career as an in-demand songwriter for bands such as The Go-Go's, Edgar Winter and Vixen as well as doing production work for Cyndi Lauper and Graham Nash. He released his first solo album in 1991, an album that showed Plunkett's growing confidence in both his own songwriting and studio techniques. Now, more than 3 decades later, Plunkett is ready to release his second solo album, a smokin' hot collection called Straight Up.This 10-track all-killer, no-filler album cranks up the volume knob to 11 and shows that Plunkett hasn't lost an ounce of the passion and power that made him a hard rock hero! Just check out the album's first single, “Rock Machine,” which kicks off with a driving guitar lick and chanted lyric that lunges straight at the listener's jugular. It's a powerblast of pure, unfiltered rock mania as only Plunkett knows how to deliver.Stream/download the single: https://orcd.co/steveplunkett_rockmachineReflecting on the album, Plunkett declares, “With Straight Up, I wanted to get back to rock basics.

John Waite was in The Babys, out front of two pop hits that both peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, ("Isn't It Time" and "Everytime I Think of You") His solo career started with a really good but forgotten 1982 debut album Ignition, which produced the single "Change". It didn't chart on Billboard's Hot 100 during its initial release (June 1982) but was #16 rock track on AOR radio stations and was produced by the great Bob Clearmountain.  And Patty Smyth sings background vocals on "Change" But it was the album No Brakes that gave him his career a real path to moving forward. "Missing You" went to No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the album was a top 10 record. We spend our time digging into his often-overlooked career. A guy with a distinctive voice that rocks. “Perched perfectly between anthemic mainstream rock and sleek post-new wave pop, it was a minor miracle -- a flawlessly written, classicist pop song, delivered with a stylish, MTV-ready flair. It deservedly became not just a number one hit, but one of those records that everybody knows”  -- Stephen Thomas Erlwine  / allmusic.com Waite had two more singles from No Brakes, including "Tears" which was a #8 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and #37 top 40. His next album had a single, "Every Step of the Way" that got radio play (#4 rock charts and  #25 top 40 and would be his last top 40 hit. He did join former Babys bandmates Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips, along with Neal Schon and drummer Deen Castronovo from Journey, to form Bad English and the 1989 ballad "When I See You Smile" went to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and the album sold nearly two million copies.  I didn't love that band, but I've always had a spot for John Waite in my rocker heart. He kept going after the band broke up. But he keeps going. Waite is not always the first thought as a terrific rock band frontman - but he was - and is. He is still on the road.  A singer who fronts a band like someone who wants to be there.  Who has been there.  He's 72 years old.  He's on tour as I recorded this, with dates booked well into 2024.  One who is worth mentioning if you talk about great rock and roll frontmen of the past, for like 50 years. He's a rock and roll lifer still working.  There is honor in that.   *** Read Rob's current and archived writing at rockforwardmusic.com WEBSITE: rockpopandroll.com EMAIL: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts

It's time to travel back to 1980 as we're joined by our good friend Al Horta (Be Cool or be PodCast Out!) to discuss two seminal works of art: Journey's Departure and Caddyshack (yes, an album AND movie review!). We also discuss why Neal Schon isn't recognized more as a guitar god, Greg Rollie vs Jonathan Cain, the time Eric had to hide in a closet from an angry husband, the time Eddy took a fraternity paddle into a hot tub, the majestic power of wood-paneled walls and sweet lovemaking, Journey tunes that metalheads would like, how Caddyshack is an anarchistic and politically-incorrect comedy that would be impossible to make today, and we might even talk a little KISS, so grab a few beers, your swimming trunks and some cocaine and get ready to party! In this episode WE'RE ALL GONNA GET LAID!!!

What the Riff?!?
1978 - March: Journey “Infinity”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2023 36:11

Infinity is the album where Journey takes on the sound we recognize as that monster of a group.  This fourth studio album is the first to include vocalist and front man Steve Perry in the group.  The group had been looking for a stronger lead vocalist, and had originally settled on Robert Fleischman for that role.  However, Fleischman was soon replaced by Perry after “musical and management differences” were encountered. In addition to Steve Perry, the band at the time included Neal Schon on guitar, Gregg Rolle on keyboards and vocals, Ross Valory on bass, and Aynsley Dunbar on percussion.  The album was produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who had previously worked with Queen.  Baker brought the layered sound and stacked vocals approach to the band, which is prominent in songs like “Feeling That Way” and “Anytime.” Infinity would mark a departure of Journey from their jazzy prog rock roots to a decidedly more accessible pop rock sound.  Much of their work prior to Infinity would disappear from the setlist over time.  This album would see both former lead singer Gregg Rolle and new lead singer Steve Perry sharing vocal duties on songs, but those lead duties would be almost exclusively Perry's going forward.Rob brings us this iconic band and album as we celebrate our 250th Episode. LightsThe lead track from the album is an homage to San Francisco. It was inspired by a sunrise when Perry was at Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles, and saw the lights going down as the sun came up.  It was the third single off the album, but was only a minor hit at number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100.Feeling That WayThis track utilizes a prominent layered sound by having multiple vocalists sing each part of the harmony in unison, creating a much fuller sound.  It also sees Perry and Rolle taking turns with the lead vocal duties.  Ordinarily paired with “Anytime,” the following song on the album, we're cutting this one short in favor of some deeper cuts.Somethin' to HideAn unusual deeper cut in an album filled with well-played songs, this track shows off Perry's high harmonies.  It was rarely played live because of the vocal difficulty.  The lyrics talk about a relationship where it is clear something is wrong, something hidden.  PatientlyAnother (relatively) deep cut, Perry and Schon wrote this song.  It is Perry's reflection about life on the road, his excitement at being a part of the band, and the thrill of the fans.  This is the first song Steve Perry wrote for the group.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Intro to the television series “Project UFO”  This short-lived television series channeled the flying saucer/alien interest that was popular at the time. STAFF PICKS:Comin' Right Down On Top of Me by April Wine Bruce gets the staff picks going with a deep track from April Wine's seventh studio album, First Glance.  The song is a blues epic which chronicles the singer's feeling of being so weighed down with bad luck that he can't breathe.  Myles Goodwyn who wrote this song was the only founding member left in the group by the time this album was created.Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel  Lynch features a song dedicated to Joel's first wife and road manager, Elizabeth Weber.  It is the first single from his hugely successful fifth studio album, The Stranger, and it would win Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1979.  Joel jokes about writing songs for his wives just before they get divorced.  Jazz saxophonist Phil Wood plays the sax solo part.Northern Lights by Renaissance Journey may have given up their prog rock roots, but Wayne brings us the prog rock with the most popular song Renaissance would produce.  This song off their eighth studio album, A Song for All Seasons, is about leaving the Northern Lights of England and fiancée Roy Wood while working in the U.S.  It went to number 10 in the UK, although it didn't break into the US top 40.Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa EsmeraldaRob finishes the staff picks with a flamenco dance cover of Nina Simone's song.  The best known cover was done by the Animals, but Santa Esmeralda featured a 16-minute cover that took up an entire album side.  You may recall Santa Esmeralda's version was featured in one of the Kill Bill:  Volume 1  fight scenes. COMEDY TRACK:Short People by Randy Newman Long before his association with Disney, Randy Newman released this novelty hit which exclaims, “Don't want no short people 'round here.”

By 1983 Journey had achieved huge success and had finally settled on a stable lineup with Steve Perry on vocals, Neal Schon on guitar, Jonathan Cain on the keys, Ross Valory on bass and Steve Smith on the drums. 1981's Escape would eventually go diamond (10 million in sales) in the US and coming off the tour to that megahit, they needed to bring the goods to follow it up. And did they ever on 1983's Frontiers with Separate Ways, Send Her My Love, Faithfully and After The Fall. It went on to sell over 6 million in the US - but could it have been bigger? Two songs that were intended to go on the album were pulled in favor of b-sides so that Ask The Lonely could be used on the Two of a Kind soundtrack in 1984 and Only The Young was part of the Vision Quest movie in 1985. They became big hits on their own but would their inclusion on Frontiers have propelled it to diamond status? Would that have delayed or accelerated Steve Perry's solo career? We go track by track on all of them and examine the turmoil in the band over the years. What a fun way to start 2023!!
