This week on America's Podcast, we dive into the self-titled debut of Blue Murder—an album packed with enough guitar wizardry to make even your air guitar feel inadequate. But does it still rock as hard as its reputation, or is it just another relic of hairspray-fueled excess? No spoilers, but let's just say we have thoughts. We also take a moment to honor the late, great John Sykes, a guitar hero who shredded his way into rock history. His influence is undeniable, but does this album showcase his finest work? Tune in to find out! And of course, our Tracks of the Week bring the heat: Mooger channels the energy of Dreamstate's "Dayseeker." Marc gets nostalgic with Whitesnake's "Bad Boys." Jerry introduces us to Blueburst's "Vanish." Until next time, as Casey Kasem used to say—Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars (and maybe a good distortion pedal while you're at it! #bluemurder #johnsykes #rockpodcast
It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. John Sykes Tribute John Sykes' passing hits hard, partly because he was the same age as me. You don't expect to be making tribute videos for someone from your own generation—a peer who, for many of us, epitomised the 1980s rock dream. But more than that, John Sykes was a driven perfectionist with a distinct vision for his music. He left an indelible mark on the bands he joined, whether it was Tygers of Pan Tang, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, or Blue Murder. To his family—especially his sons—know that John Sykes was truly one of the greats. His riffs, solos, and larger-than-life stage presence continue to inspire guitarists all over the world. Though his time here ended too soon, the music he created remains timeless. Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

Send us a textRock Legend: A Conversation With Drumming Icon Carmine Appice#vanillafudge #rocklegends #rockdrummer #carmineappice #classicrock #rodstewart #jeffbeck #cactus #bluemurder #kingcobra As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King‘s X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. April 1989: The world was a strange mix of excess and transition. On one side, the neon-drenched MTV era was still riding high, with hair metal bands like Poison, Motley Crüe, and Def Leppard dominating the charts with their polished, radio-friendly anthems. Power ballads and arena rock were inescapable, and rock fans were tuned in to Bon Jovi and Guns N' Roses. Yet, beneath the surface, change was brewing. Bands like Jane's Addiction and Soundgarden were slowly carving out a new, grittier sound that would soon transform the entire landscape.Amid this backdrop, Blue Murder made their entrance—not as another Sunset Strip glam act, but as a hard-hitting supergroup led by a guitar hero who had already proven himself with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake. John Sykes wasn't looking to jump on the hair metal bandwagon. Instead, with Blue Murder, he aimed to bring the technical brilliance of the '70s into the late '80s, blending his bluesy, virtuoso guitar work with heavy grooves and intricate song structures. Sykes, along with legendary drummer Carmine Appice and fretless bass wizard Tony Franklin, formed a trio that drew on the legacy of hard rock and metal titans, delivering something deeper and more ambitious than most of their glam metal contemporaries.Yet, for all their talent, Blue Murder wasn't about writing catchy three-minute radio singles. Their self-titled debut album was a blend of towering guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and epic song structures that leaned closer to the ‘70s hard rock tradition of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple than the bubblegum metal that filled the charts. But in 1989, as hair metal ruled the airwaves and grunge was lurking around the corner, Blue Murder stood out—ambitious, raw, and musically masterful. The Road to Blue MurderJohn Sykes had already proven his chops with Whitesnake's 1987 album, a monster hit that spawned chart-topping singles and dominated MTV. But creative tensions with Whitesnake's leader, David Coverdale, led to Sykes' unceremonious departure just as the band was at the peak of its commercial success. Undeterred, Sykes began writing material for what would eventually become Blue Murder, determined to put together a powerhouse group that could rival his previous success. At first, Sykes wasn't planning to be the frontman. The band initially brought in some big-name vocalists to handle lead duties. Ray Gillen of Black Sabbath and Badlands fame was the first to join the lineup, contributing vocals to some early demos. But Gillen left after just a few months, reportedly due to creative differences. The next contender was Tony Martin, another former Black Sabbath singer, but he, too, didn't stick around for long. After several auditions and some disagreements with the label Geffen Records, the A&R team suggested that Sykes himself take over lead vocals. Despite being known more for his guitar work, Sykes stepped up, and his voice turned out to be a perfect match for the band's sound—gritty, soulful, and powerful. With legendary drummer Carmine Appice, who had played with the likes of Jeff Beck and Vanilla Fudge, and fretless bass virtuoso Tony Franklin, fresh off his stint with The Firm alongside Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, Blue Murder had a lineup that was nothing short of rock royalty. The result was a self-titled debut that combined technical brilliance with bluesy hard rock, reflecting Sykes' desire to channel the spirit of '70s heavyweights like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, rather than chasing the more formulaic sound of the late-'80s hair metal scene.Building the Sound: A Guitarist as a FrontmanFor a guy who wasn't originally a vocalist, Sykes delivered some serious vocal prowess on Blue Murder. He was filling big shoes, considering he had just played alongside David Coverdale, one of rock's great frontmen. And while the album isn't a complete departure from Whitesnake's bluesy, hard-hitting rock, it's more expansive, both musically and lyrically. The standout track, “Valley of the Kings,” showcases the epic grandeur Blue Murder was going for. Co-written by Black Sabbath's Tony Martin, the song combines powerful riffs, intricate solos, and a historical theme that was rare in the pop-metal scene of the time. This track had a “late '80s Sabbath” feel, blending hard rock with doom-like weight, something that set the band apart from the typical hair metal crowd.Tracks like “Jelly Roll” and “Out of Love” demonstrate the band's diversity—moving between blues-infused swagger and heartfelt ballads, all carried by Sykes' smooth yet powerful vocals and, of course, his signature guitar tone. The hosts also discussed how “Out of Love,” a lesser-known power ballad, was one of those hidden gems deserving far more attention than it ever received. The Legacy of Blue MurderThough the album charted respectably (peaking at #69 on the Billboard 200), it didn't make the impact that Whitesnake's 1987 album did. Part of the issue was the changing musical landscape. By 1989, the glam metal scene was beginning to saturate, and the introspective rawness of grunge was on the horizon. Blue Murder, with its complex musicianship and Sykes' ambitious songwriting, may have been too sophisticated for an audience that was more accustomed to quick-hit rock anthems. But for those in the know, Blue Murder became a cult classic. Its combination of blistering guitar work, thunderous drums, and intricate bass lines made it a musician's album—a performance record. For fans of technical prowess and intricate song structures, Blue Murder was a band worth rediscovering. What Could Have BeenDespite the talent and the potential, Blue Murder never achieved the commercial success many expected. Tensions with their label, Geffen Records, didn't help. Sykes believed Geffen was trying to sabotage the band in hopes he'd rejoin Whitesnake. Whether or not that's true, it's clear that Blue Murder didn't get the marketing push it deserved. After a follow-up album in 1993 (Nothing But Trouble), Blue Murder faded into the background, overshadowed by the grunge explosion. However, Sykes continued to be a respected figure in the hard rock and metal scenes, even though he never reached the heights of Whitesnake's success again.A Call to Revisit a Lost MasterpieceSo why does Blue Murder still resonate with those who know it? It's a record that transcends the pop-metal limitations of its time. If you're a fan of Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, or just killer guitar work, this album is well worth revisiting. And for those who missed it the first time around, now's the perfect time to dive into one of the best-kept secrets of late '80s metal.Take a listen, let it transport you back to 1989, and then wonder how this gem flew under the radar.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Blue Murder * 22:17 - Black-Hearted Woman * 27:14 - Out of Love * 31:53 - Ptolemy * 37:59 - Billy * 39:04 - It's Too Late (demo w/ Ray Gillen on lead vocals) * Outro - Valley of the KingsMake Your Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 90s Rock, we rely on you, our listeners. Carmine Appice is one of the few drum legends we have left. What's interesting to me about his career is that his name is usually bigger than the bands he's in whether it's Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck, Bogart, Appice, King Kobra, Blue Murder or his side work with Rod Stewart and Ozzy. These days he's turning his attention to Cactus, who recently released a new album called Temple of Blues where they redo a bunch of the classic Cactus songs and invite their friends along. Buddies like Dee Snider, Ted Nugent, Joe Bonamassa, Dug Pinnick, and tons more feature prominently on this all-star disc. We also discuss each of these Other projects as well as a few more. Carmine's been at it for 60 years and only gotten better. Enjoy! www.carmineappice.net www.cactusrocks.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

News and Notes About "A Very Merry Mix-Up" This movie originally premiered on November 10, 2013. Jonathan Wright directed “A Very Merry Mix-Up” and it was his second directorial project for Hallmark. He has since gone on to direct a total of 23 movies, a majority of them for Hallmark which include “True Justice: Family Ties,” “A Not So Royal Christmas” and “Family History Mysteries: Buried Past” as of recently. Barbara Kymlicka wrote the script. She currently has 67 writing credits and has written many Hallmark and Lifetime movies. The last couple of projects Kymlicka wrote included last year's “The Secret Gift of Christmas” and all four episodes of “The Love Club.” Alicia Witt stars as Alice. Witt has a staggering 90 acting credits which started in 1984 at the age of 7. Hogan has 129 acting credits, recently appearing in “Tipline Mysteries: Dial 1 for Murder.” Lawrence Dane play Matt's grandpa Charles. Having appeared in 150 projects, this 2013 movie was the second to last on his resume. Dane passed in March 2022 at the age of 84. Mimi Kuzyk plays Will's mom Judith. With 141 acting credits, Kuzyk has appeared in “Hill Street Blues,” “Blue Murder,” “Workin' Moms,” and “UnREAL” - to name a few. According to IMDB, the role of Alice was originally written for Jennifer Lopez. Watch the Trailer for "A Very Merry Mix-Up"

This lineup released three classic albums - Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971) – all of which charted in the Billboard Top 200 and that still hold up well today. Rock Icon Carmine Appice drops by to chat about Vanilla Fudge history and their local tour dates in the NorthEast in May! Carmine was in various bands after Vanilla Fudge, including Cactus, Beck, Bogart and Appice, Rod Stewart, King Cobra, Blue Murder and even toured with Ozzy Osbourne! Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create “psychedelic symphonic rock” an eclectic genre which would, among its many offshoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Although, at first, the band did not record original material, they were best known for their dramatic heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs which they developed into works of epic proportion. Originally, Vanilla Fudge was a blue-eyed soul cover band called The Pigeons, formed in 1965 with organist, Mark Stein, bassist, Tim Bogert and drummer, Joey Brennan, and guitarist, vocalist and US Navy veteran, Vince Martell. They built a following by gigging extensively up and down the East Coast, and earned extra money by providing freelance in-concert backing for hit-record girl groups. In early 1966, the group recorded a set of eight demos that were released several years later as “While the World Was Eating Vanilla Fudge.”In 1968, Vanilla Fudge headlined the Fillmore West with Steve Miller. The group then performed “You Keep Me Hangin' On” on The Ed Sullivan Show, and released their second album, “The Beat Goes On.” Despite its avant-garde conceptualization and execution, the LP was a hit and climbed into the Top Twenty. That summer, Atco reissued “You Keep Me Hangin' On,” and the second time around it climbed into the Top Ten. It was followed by Renaissance, one of Vanilla Fudge's best albums, which also hit the Top Twenty. The band had three albums in the Top One Hundred, two of which were in the Top Twenty and one in the Top Five Single. The band toured with Jimi Hendrix, played dates equal billed or headlined with groups such as Cream, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, among many others; late in the year, they toured with the fledgling Led Zeppelin as their opening act.For more on Vanilla Fudge click on the linkhttps://vanillafudge.com
Today's guest makes me appreciate life a bit more. Welcome a woman who has lived the blues, Bex Marshall. She talks about how she always had this absolute need to learn how to play guitar and the huge impact karaoke had on starting her career. She was singing in a band called Blue Murder before she had to press pause on her music career and get a “real” job. But it wasn't all that bad. She traveled the globe and it was on a flight home from Jakarta when it hit her that music was her calling. She describes the great support she received from her family, including being given a Gibson Hummingbird guitar at age 11 that she still uses to this day and how street performers helped her raise her own bar. Since then, Bex has taken her time to grow and hone her craft. That not only includes loads of gigs and touring but also by starting a writer's retreat that was inspired by her late husband, pirate DJ Barry Everett. She also talks about the history of The House of Mercy, a place of rest for traveling musicians. Bex's latest release, Fortuna, began during COVID lockdowns, which turned out to be a tough time for her including the unexpected passing of her bass player. She's persevered and released the album that includes some of her best work to date. Pick it up wherever you get music or through bexmarshall.com. Follow her on Facebook, X, Instagram, & TikTok. Legendary iconic drummer Carmine Appice drops by to chat about The Rod Experience shows....his release of Beck, Bogart and Appice Boxed set "Live From Japan" and more! As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. In ‘76, he joined Rod Stewart‘s band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewart‘s biggest hits, “Do Ya Think I‘m Sexy' and “Young Turks.' He left Stewart to record his first solo album, “Rockers', and tour Japan and North America with an allstar band. . In the early 80's, he toured with OZZY Osborne ,Ted Nugent . In the mid 80's, he formed King Kobra for two Capitol albums and international touring And in the late 80's, Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record “Momentary Lapse of Reason' and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnake‘s John Sykes and The Firm‘s Tony Franklin. In the early 90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group. As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). He was the first Rock Drummer and Rock Musician to conduct instructional clinics and symposiums around the world.https://carmineappice.net

The writer, actor and musician Patrick Marlborough, a regular contributor to Vice, Gawker and The Guardian, joins me from Perth in Western Australia for a show about the groundbreaking 1995 miniseries Blue Murder, starring Richard Roxburgh. Blue Murder tells the true story of corruption in the New South Wales police department and the friendship between the hot-headed detective Roger Rogerson and the Sydney crime kingpin Neddy Smith, who was given the “green light” by Rogerson to commit crimes, including murder, with police protection. This bombshell series, produced by the public broadcaster ABC, was banned from the airwaves in New South Wales for 6 years. We discuss this terrific miniseries, the inferior recent sequel Blue Murder: Killer Cop (2017), produced by the private channel Seven Network, and Patrick offers some insights into Toxic Masculinity, Aussie-style, and the landscape of media culture Down Under that these two miniseries represent. Both Blue Murder and the sequel are currently available to stream on Prime Video in Canada, and can also be found on YouTube. Patrons of the Junk Filter podcast receive at least two additional exclusive episodes a month: some of our notable previous guests include Jared Yates Sexton, David Roth, Alex Shephard, Sooz Kempner, and Jacob Bacharach. Darren and Steve debate Dave's very short response to the recent article at Rolling Stone about Eddie Van Halen, and Wolfgang's recent interview with Rolling Stone. Plus, the tribute concert: The one question that hasn't been asked? Various speculation and information, and...has Dave been recording very recently? Then, Darren speaks with vocalist and musician Marc LaFrance. If that name sounds familiar its because Marc sang background vocals on Dave's "A Little Ain't Enough" album and on a vertiable ton of music by Loverboy, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cher, Carly Simon, Blue Murder, The Cult, The Scorpions, Poison and more, plus music by Scholastica Books. He has also been part of countless commercials and advertising campaigns! Marc tells why "Dave was amazing to work with" at Little Mountain Studios, Dave's climbing wall there, "wafts of herb" via the Diamond One and other good stuff.
