https://youtube.com/live/4_iffBMGZ5s You wouldn't believe Mico Klokoc Thompson's story—it's like something out of a rock and roll legend. This guy's been hooked on electronics since he was just a little kid, probably around six. His grandfather used to tinker with tube TVs, radios, and ham radio setups, so there was always some cool gadget to mess with at his grandparents' house. Oh, and his grandfather also played a little guitar, which kind of planted the seed for Mico's lifelong love of music and tone. By the time he was 12, Mico was already reaching out to big names in the industry. He wrote to Ken Fischer from Trainwreck Circuits and even the artist relations team at Kramer Guitars. And get this—Ken Fischer actually responded and told him to stay in touch. Talk about a promising start! Fast forward a few years, and by 17, he was on the road with Aerosmith, working behind the scenes while Guns N' Roses was the opening act. Can you imagine being a teenager and getting that kind of backstage pass to rock history? From there, he jumped into the Hollywood music scene, fixing tube amps and working with local guitarists at Amp Crazy. It didn't take long for Mico to start rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in the game. He worked with Eddie Van Halen, Ratt, Poison—you name it. And when he moved to Nashville, he didn't slow down. Instead, he started working with country legends like Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, and Merle Haggard. But Mico's not just some behind-the-scenes tech guy. He's been a key player at Trainwreck Amplifiers for years, partnered with One Control Effects and Amplifiers, and he even designs his own amps now. He's all about restoring vintage gear and helping musicians perfect their tone. I mean, he's worked with everyone from Ted Nugent to Pat Travers, and even up-and-comers like Benito Di Bartolie and Dante Bonasera. Mico's the guy you call when you're serious about tone. Whether it's building a custom amp, restoring a classic, or just dialing in that perfect sound, he's the one who makes it happen. He's a legend in his own right. "Talking Guitars" is your go-to show for all things guitars and guitar gear. Hosted by passionate guitar enthusiasts, the show dives into the latest trends, gear reviews, and industry news, catering to guitar players of all levels. From discussing the newest guitar models to exploring innovative pedal effects, "Talking Guitars" keeps viewers informed and entertained. But it's not just about information - the show also hosts exciting giveaways, fostering a sense of community and fun among guitar enthusiasts. So whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, tune in to "Talking Guitars" for a great time and all things guitar!

Send us a textRock Legend: A Conversation With Drumming Icon Carmine Appice#vanillafudge #rocklegends #rockdrummer #carmineappice #classicrock #rodstewart #jeffbeck #cactus #bluemurder  #kingcobra As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King‘s X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. In ‘76, he joined Rod Stewart‘s band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewart‘s biggest hits, “Do Ya Think I‘m Sexy' and “Young Turks.' He left Stewart to record his first solo album, “Rockers', and tour Japan and North America with an allstar band. . In the early 80's, he toured with OZZY Osborne ,Ted Nugent . In the mid 80's, he formed King Kobra for two Capitol albums and international touring And in the late 80's, Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record “Momentary Lapse of Reason' and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnake‘s John Sykes and The Firm‘s Tony Franklin. In the early 90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group. As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). Drummer Carmine Appice (who is also a founding member of Vanilla Fudge and who has performed and/or recorded with Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Ozzy, and Pink Floyd, amongst others), Cactus is as heavy, bluesy, and uncompromising in its musical assault as they were 50-plus years ago.The band released its new album, Temple of Blues – Influences & Friends, June 7 on Cleopatra Records.  The album merges the current members of Cactus with a big-name, star laden, ensemble of guest artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences.  Featured along with the current Cactus band is a who's who of blues and rock icons: Guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers,  Warren Hayes, Vernon Reid, Steve Stevens, Johnny A (The Yardbirds), Ty Tabor (King's X) and bassists  Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King's X)  Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Kenny Aaronson (ex- Joan Jet and The Yardbirds), as well as members of  Government Mule, Vixen, Rainbow, Zebra, and Whitesnake.  Vocalist Dee Snider of Twisted Sister appears on the band's remake of the Howlin' Wolf classic “Evil,” and Appice's bandmate in Vanilla Fudge Mark Stein turns in a powerful vocal on Little Richard's “Long Tall Sally.” A second version of “Guiltless Glider,” appears as a bonus track with former Judas Priest vocalist, Ripper Owens. In addition to Appice on drums and vocals on all tracks, original Cactus guitarist Jim McCarty also appears on Temple of Blues.  The new album contains reimagined versions of some of Cactus's most legendary songs with the current band and guests putting a new spin on these bad-ass tunes that are among the heaviest of heavy blues-rock ever recorded. “The music of Cactus has always been steeped in the blues tradition,” says Appice, who wanted the group to re-visit its best songs within a modern rock approach to traditional blues. “We kept hearing from so many of our music celebrity friends how much Cactus influenced them and how they would love to be a guest on a Cactus album. Any band named Cactus has got to be raw and heavy.  And that's just what these boys have been and are since the band's formation in 1970. Referred to when they first formed as the “American Led Zeppelin,” the band's reputation as supreme masters of relentless hard rock still precedes them and is well deserved. Cactus was formed in 1970 from the ashes of Vanilla Fudge when Appice and former Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert's plans to form a band with Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had a nasty automobile accident that sidelined him for a lengthy period-of-time. The original lineup featured Appice, Bogert, former Mitch Ryder guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. This lineup released three classic albums - Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971) – all of which charted in the Billboard Top 200 and that still hold up well today.  Carmine's playing has also been a huge influence on drummers including Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), Neal Peart (Rush), Phil Collins (Genesis), Brian Taylor (Queen), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and countless others.  He was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. His best-selling drum instruction book The Realistic Rock Drum Method was first published in 1972 and has since been revised and republished as The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method. Carmine also published his best-selling memoir, Stick It!: My Life of Sex, Drums & Rock 'n' Roll, in 2016. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This band played covers of tracks by Elmore James, Ray Charles, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Troup, and John Lee Hooker. After that, Cowling played in British groups including Gnidrolog and the Flying Hat Band, before joining forces with Pat Travers in 1975.Cowling recorded eight albums for Travers from 1976 to 1982. He left Travers that year and later in the 1980s joined sisters Pam and Paula Mattioli in US AOR band Gypsy Queen (later to become Cell Mates in the early 1990s after Cowling's time in the band), appearing at the 1987 Reading Rock Festival and on Gypsy Queen's debut album before leaving the band later the same year. He rejoined Travers in 1989, and remained until 1993. He performed on Travers' singles "Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights)" and "Snortin' Whiskey". Cowling was also featured on two video releases. The first was Hooked On Music, a live performance originally shot for the German television programme, Rockpalast in 1976, which showcased an early line-up that also included Nicko McBrain. With his hard, edgy tone, rough and rowdy vocals, and barroom boogie aesthetic, Canadian singer, guitarist, and keyboardist Pat Travers is a fine example of a Canadian bluesy hard rock act. He emerged during the '70s heyday of hard blues-rocking guitar heroes. His 8 albums from his 1976 debut through to 1984 netted seven Top 200 chart placements and two Top 40 singles, including the party anthem classic "Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights)." Pat is equally adept at playing funk, jazz, and prog and has toured almost annually for more than 40 years. Born in Toronto in 1954, Pat first picked up the guitar after seeing a local performance by Jimi Hendrix. He began studying the other top rock guitarists of the day - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page. He then hooked up with '50s rock & roll vet Ronnie Hawkins  (best known for performing with a backing band that would eventually become The Band. But Travers' first love was hard rock, so he packed up and headed to London. In 1976 his performance at the Reading Festival resulted in two releases before he returned to North America and set his sights on the U.S. rock market. The new Travers band lineup led to his most commercially successful period, resulting in a pair of Top 30 releases, including 1980's Crash and Burn. Unfortunately as the '80s got underway, the music changed and bluesy hard rock wasn't in demand any longer. Pat Travers continued releasing albums but they sold less so he opted to take a break from producing records although he did continue to tour solidly. And he still does. In 2022, Travers issued The Art of Time Travel, a return to hard blues-rock. Numerous controversies and triumphs have only added depth to Pat Travers' storied career, and today his musical journey continues to evolve. His story is not just a biography but a testament to the enduring power of musical expression and the indelible mark one artist can leave on the world. Pat has worked hard to establish his well deserved reputation as being one of the very best hard rock guitarists in the world today. I hope you enjoy learning about his journey. Rodney O'Quinn, Foghat's bassist since 2015 sits down to discuss their newest album SONIC MOJO, as well as reminiscing about tour life, the time he stepped away from music, and more.Biography (from Foghat website)At 5 years old, grabbing mom's vacuum cleaner like a mic stand singing “Hound Dog” by Elvis, Rodney O'Quinn was smitten and bitten by the music bug at an early age. By the time he was 11, a request from a friend simply saying “We need a Bass Player. You should get one!” would lead him to the first of many stages he would perform on.Straight out of High School, Rodney attained his higher education in Rock & Roll playing full time from 1984-1996 with various notable Bands out of the South East U.S. This included a 5-year stint with one of the South East's top touring/grossing bands, ELI which generated 2 well received albums. Averaging 240 shows a year left Rodney feeling burned out and ready for a change. He was leaving life on the road behind (or so he thought). In 2007 (Rodney describes it as an “itch that needed to be scratched”) music beckoned once again and he was compelled to answer. Rodney joined Pat Travers Band for what he thought would be a year or two on the road. Over the next eight and half years with the Pat Travers Band, Rodney played over 500 shows across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, U.K., Europe and Sweden and recorded 2 studio CD's and 2 Live CD/DVD's with the band. They also performed Live on the syndicated show RockLine Radio 3 times as well as a concert, “Live from Moondance Jam” which aired over 100 times on Direct TV.More than just a beast on the bass and a pretty face, Rodney used his business savvy background to handle many facets of the PTB organization. In 2010, he co-produced a run of shows that featured Pat Travers, Derek St Holmes, Mark Farner and Ronnie Montrose called Guitar Gods of the 70's. Along with other members of Pat's band, Rodney would play bass behind all of these Artists.During these extensive tours, as fate would have it, Rodney crossed paths many times with his friend and fellow bass player, Craig MacGregor of Foghat. After watching Rodney play, Craig Macgregor admired Rodney's talent and when the time was right, was called upon in 2015 to fill in for “Mac” and has since become a permanent part of the Foghat Family. Two years, 2 Foghat CD releases and 140+ shows (and counting) Rodney is honored to be able to add his touch to this piece of Foghat history.  Support the showLove the show? *Click here to leave a review!*Blog https://tstakaishi.wixsite.com/musicInsta @creative_peacemeal_podcastFB @creativepeacemealpodBonfire https://www.bonfire.com/store/creative-peacemeal/Redbubble CPPodcast.redbubble.comCreative Peacemeal READING list here Donate to AhHa!Broadway here! What the Riff?!?
1980 - January: Pink Floyd “The Wall”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 30, 2023 43:45

Pink Floyd would score another big hit and some mainstream crossover success with their eleventh studio album, The Wall.  Originally conceived by bassist Roger Waters, The Wall explores the self-isolation of a cynical rock star named Pink, and portrays events in his life from the loss of his father, to childhood trauma, to the pressures of rock stardom as bricks forming the wall.  Parts of the story are autobiographical from Waters, and parts naturally are based on former front man Syd Barrett.  The album was a commercial success, the most successful double album of all time, the second most popular Pink Floyd album behind their monstrous hit "Dark Side of the Moon," and would produce the groups only number 1 single on the charts with "Another Brick in the Wall, part 2."  Critical reviews were mixed at first, with some considering the rock opera to be pretentious, but the reviews would turn more positive over time. This would be the last album to feature the classic band lineup.  Richard Wright would be fired by Roger Waters during production, though he would stay on as a studio musician for the album.  One further studio album would be produced before acrimony would lead to Waters departure from the band. What the Riff co-founder Brian Dickhute brings us this album for today's podcast.  Brian is also using this as a swan song of sorts as he takes a break from regular podcasting duties to spend more time with the family.  Thanks so much for all your work over these hundreds of podcasts, Brian! Hey YouThis well-known track leads off side three of the album and reflects the desperation as Pink realizes how the wall of isolation he has built has trapped him in a cell of his own creation.  The inspiration for this song was the breakup of Waters' marriage. Is There Anybody Out There? In the film this song is used to transition from Pink the rock star to Pink the dictator.  Session musician Joe DiBlasi was brought in to play the fingerstyle guitar on this piece.Nobody's HomeThe last song written for the album was the result of a fight between Roger Waters and David Gilmour.  It was inspired by the isolation Waters felt during their 1977 tour and musings on Syd Barrett.  Some of the lyrics are also built around Richard Wright, keyboardist, who was allegedly dealing with drug addiction at the time.VeraThis song is a flashback to days of World War II.  The title was inspired by Vera Lynn, a British singer popular during the war who sang the song "We'll Meet Again."  Waters lost his grandfather in WWI and his father in WWII.Bring the Boys Back HomeRoger Waters considers this brief song the central theme of the album.  The idea is that not just war, but all activity including business and rock music should not be allowed to isolate a person from friends and family. Comfortably NumbOne of the more popular songs from the album, the music was written by David Gilmour and the lyrics by Roger Waters.  A significant argument occurred between Gilmour and Waters on the arrangement of this piece, with Gilmour preferring a stripped-down format and Watters wanting a more symphonic approach.  The contrasting sections of orchestration and more simplistic riffs is the result of the compromise made for the piece. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Frosty the Snowman by Jimmy Durante No, it isn't Christmas again.  Popular entertainer Jimmy Durante passed away in January of 1980, and his is one of his best known songs.  STAFF PICKS:The Spirit of Radio by Rush Bruce sneaks another Rush song in for Brian's final episode as a regular podcaster.  The lead-off track to Rush's album "Permanent Waves" was inspired by the slogan of CFNY-FM in Toronto.  FM radio was moving from a more free-form format to a more commercial format, and CFNY was bucking the trend.  Damned If I Do by the Alan Parsons ProjectRob brings us a piece from Alan Parsons' fourth studio album called "Eve."  The album is focused on the strength and characteristics of women and the difficulties they face in a world of men.  "Damned if I do, damned if I don't, but I love you."Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights) by Pat Travers Wayne's staff pick is a boogie woogie cover of a blues song originally released by Little Walter in 1957.  It is a well known party song which would not be politically correct today.  There's some great guitar playing, and an excellent call-and-response in the live version.  Ladies Night by Kool & The GangBrian's staff pick was a popular song in the dying days of disco.  This song would see a revitalization of Kool & the Gang's popularity going into the early 80's.     INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pipeline '76 by Roger PowellIt is unusual to find surfing instrumentals during the early 80's, but this one was around at the time.

Learning-by-doing, he recorded several instrumental albums, playing the lion's share of the instruments: keyboards, bass, guitars, and drums. He tried his hand at singing in 1980, recording his vocal debut album, ‘In the Absence of the Cat', followed by ‘I Won't be Home Tonight', which was signed by fledgling (and scandal-ridden) label Rocshire Records in Anaheim, California. ‘I Won't Be Home Tonight' was a radio sensation in America in 1982, with the single reaching #8 on the Rock Radio Billboard chart. The prolific young songwriter was in the studio daily between 1978 - 83, recording in different styles. His science fiction - themed ‘Planet P Project' caught the attention of Geffen Records, and the eponymous album containing the single ‘Why Me' was an MTV smash, followed by the album 'Some Tough City', which yielded 2 Top 40 singles in 1984: ‘A Fine, Fine Day' and 'The First Day of Summer'.This was followed by the now-classic ‘Pink World' double pink vinyl release by Planet P Project.A more detailed discography/biography appears here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_CareyHampered by serious illness in 2009, Carey made a full recovery and has spent the last years recording and touring in Europe and Scandinavia. Carey has recorded and released over 40 records, and produced records by John Mayall, Chris Norman, David Knopfler, Joe Cocker, and Peter Maffay (Germany's top-selling rock artist). He has done several film scores and published well over 1,000 songs.Carey's 2013 release 'Steeltown' (Planet P Project') reflects his love of and appreciation for Norway, thematically exploring the history and struggles of this fascinating country.2019 marks Carey's 50th Anniversary as a Beat Poet/Still Hippie/Not- Dead- Yet Person, and will be commemorated by the release of 'Lucky Us', his first non- Planet P  Project Record in, well, a very long time - and the re-release of 12 Catalog albums, which include five 'PPP' records, two albums of other folks' songs (Stanislaus County Kid I & II), a Christmas record (!), and a movie-soundtrack-without-a-movie, in addition to 3 solo albums.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Instagram  - https://www.instagram.com/tony_carey_official/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/teecee68Call to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Chuck Wright is an American bassist, songwriter, singer, music producer, and live event producer, best known as a long-time member of the multi-platinum Heavy Metal band Quiet Riot. He originally worked with Quiet Riot in 1982, playing bass on the tracks "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" and "Don't Wanna Let You Go," as well as singing background vocals on all of the tracks from the 1983 multi-platinum album Metal Health. The album spawned the first-ever #1 Metal album on Billboards Hot 100 and changed the fabric of the music as it was known then. Wright's career in mainstream rock first took off when he joined Giuffria in 1984. The album spawned the first-ever #1 Metal album on Billboards Hot 100 and changed the fabric of the music as it was known then. Wright's career in mainstream rock first took off when he joined Giuffria in 1984. Wow. Just wow! As great as it was to sit down with my old pal, renowned drummer, Sandy Gennaro, in August, today may be a game changer for me. Sure, we talked career… Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, Bo Didley, Johnny Winter, Pat Travers, but this time we dug deep into his personal relationships with each of them, their style of banding or bonding as it were. Fascinating. Great stories, all. The highlights for me were talking about Sandy's 38-year marriage and what makes it still thrive, joyfully. Lessons learned there. He said exactly what I needed to hear. Likewise, when discussing what prompted his latest career shift, much like the seemingly simple random act of kindness that prompted his life-changing gig with Cyndi, a more recent momentary act of thoughtful, attentive, generosity, led to a whole new beginning as a speaker and author, which is exploding with rewards. I paid Sandy's example forward, immediately following the Live, whilst speaking at a meeting of entrepreneurs. Not seeking any return or reward, one came totally out of left field. It works when I work it. Once again this time with Sandy was thoughtful, insightful, inspiring, motivating, and crazy fun. Seeking a little push in the right direction? Check him out here, and read Sandy's Beat The Odds in Business & Life. You can get a signed copy with a pair of sticks, at https://sandygennaro.com/beat-the-odds-products/ - Not surprisingly, Sandy gives good signage! Adored every second of this. Tell us a little bit about that whole, Julia   you know, there. Oh, well, I played for 13 years in Brazil. And we did have a good heat there for a while. I tour like I used to play like arenas there like rodeos was always on TV, radios and stuff like that. And I learned a lot with that I joined the band, I was 17. So, I was just like a baby. And I remember, you know, it was amazing. But at the same time, I wasn't really playing the kind of music I love. I was playing like what we call Brazilian country music, which is the country music people from the countryside write songs is kind of similar like America, but the rhythm is similar, but has a little different swing here and there. You know, it's Brazil. But um, so yeah, so I started there. And we did all major stuff, like for real, like, we had a boss who their faces on...

Sandy Gennaro Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson I feel like I went “home.” Sitting down with Sandy Gennaro after a 30-year abyss was a walk down the wild side of memory lane and just crazy fun. Having a bunch of our old cohorts from back in the day along for the ride made it that much funner. Sandy took us from Staten Island, getting ignited by The Beatles, local giggin' and day jobs to LA, meeting an idol, erring' at a major audition, helping said idol get that gig, Michael Boloton - not a misspelling, before he was Bolton, Pat Travers, playing arenas, to playing with an unknown Cyndi Lauper, who exploded on their first tour, getting that gig thanks to Sandy's kindness to a stranger. A recurring theme in his story. Great stories along the way, opening for Queen for months at the height of it all, The Monkees, Davy, and Micky, solo as well, Joan Jett… we got stopped there, the time flew and Sandy had another show to do. We talked family, his marriage which has thrived for 30+ years, his daughter living her dream, she's had a great teacher, and Sandy's been a masterful manifester. His recently dropped, Beat the Odds in Business & Life, which is filled with more great stories, how he did and does what he does, and how we can, too. You can get a signed copy with a pair of sticks, at https://sandygennaro.com/beat-the-odds-products/ - Sandy gives good signage! It's how his career kind of began. It's all in there. There was much laughter, smiles from face end to face end, warm remembrances, an all-around great time. There's so much more to talk about - we'll be back. Part Two is promised. Part 1s don't get better. Here's the discussed video of Sandy on Carson playing Stump The Band https://bit.ly/3q0L0Ey - killer!
