On this week's episode, I talk with Billy Sheehan and Mike Krompass from The Fell, along with Jake Diab and Joe Coccimiglio from Autumn Kings. The Fell is a band that Mike founded 10 years ago. They've dropped two singles, Killswitch and Face Out - the title track. They have an EP coming out in October, with the full-length album coming out in 2026. How does one go about getting Billy Sheehan in the band? What legendary artist's album did Billy just play on? Billy just played a giant show in Indonesia with Bumblefoot and Steve Vai, among others. I asked him about the last time he played with Steve, who he played with in the David Lee Roth band. That's just for starters with this conversation. Up next, it's Jake and Joe from Autumn Kings. The boys recently played a string of shows in Europe. We talk about that and some special guests who came to see them on tour. Is there new music coming from AK? Yes. When? Well, they couldn't say exactly, but they gave us a hint. They're playing Riff Fest on September 20th at Pine Knob.Enjoy and thanks for listening!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into an article where Steve Vai recalls the moment he knew he was destined to join David Lee Roth's band after Roth's split from Van Halen in 1985. Vai shares how, the second he heard Roth was searching for a guitarist, he told his roommate, “That's my gig.” The very next day, Roth himself called. We also talk about Roth's ambitions to “beat Van Halen,” the challenges of filling Eddie Van Halen's shoes, and why Vai believed he was perfect for the role. Tune in for this deep look into one of rock's most iconic stories—Steve Vai's early days with Diamond Dave and the legacy of Van Halen.
When people talk about the great rock vocalists of all time, several familiar and redundant names will always appear, like Ronnie James Dio, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Chris Cornell and others. One name that appears on those same lists is Rock And Roll Hall of Famer, Glenn Hughes, known for his work in Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Trapeze, Black Country Communion, and as a solo artist. We were lucky enough to speak with him about the new record, upcoming confirmed projects with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Joe Bonamassa, as well as what it was like to play Cal Jam I in Ontario and his thoughts on loosing his friend Ozzy Osbourne the prior week.

Interview by Kris PetersIf you think you've seen everything live music has to offer, think again. On July 5, Brisbane audiences are in for a jaw-dropping experience as Andrea Krakovská, Australia's very own aerial guitarist, brings her gravity-defying show to the Arcana Empress Theatre in Moorooka.Combining the technical mastery of live electric guitar with breathtaking aerial acrobatics, Andrea Krakovská has carved out a completely unique space in the world of performance. Suspended mid-air, she shreds powerful solos while spinning, soaring and twisting through space. The show is a visual and sonic spectacle that is truly unlike anything else you've seen before.Fresh from wowing crowds across Sydney and Melbourne, Andrea's Aerial Guitar Show is part rock concert, part aerial artistry, and all heart. This is no ordinary gig; it's a full-body performance that pushes the boundaries of what live music can be.For one night only, Brisbane fans have the chance to witness this one-of-a-kind talent up close. Whether you're a fellow guitarist, music lover, circus arts enthusiast, or simply looking for something unforgettable to do on a Saturday night, this is a show you do not want to miss. HEAVY sat down for a chat with Andrea to take us deeper inside the art of the flying guitar."The way that I've been describing the show to people is two ways," she began. "Either I say to them, think of it as going to see a guitarist like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai or Nita Strauss, but imagine that during parts of the show, instead of just staying on the ground the whole time, they will climb up a rope and do some guitar solos in midair. Or the other way that I describe it to people is to think about a Pink concert, and you know how she does the air tricks in her show? Imagine if Pink was a heavy metal guitarist? But the best way to describe it, honestly, is for you to just see the show for yourself. It is hard to really explain the magnitude of the whole show in words, but it really is a visual experience."In the full interview, we discussed Andrea's upcoming aerial guitar performance at the Arcana Empress Theatre in Brisbane on July 5 in more detail. She described her innovative act, which combines original compositions and covers, and walked us through the processes and any safety concerns people might have. The logistical challenges of playing guitar while suspended were also highlighted, showcasing the uniqueness of her performance style. Andrea recalled her training in both components, highlighting which she favours and which is the hardest to do, where the initial idea came from, how much training and practice goes into each performance and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Steve and Darren discuss some good news around David Lee Roth ahead of the tour starting July 22 as Dave and band have been in seemingly intense rehearsals the last two weeks, and it looks likely the same guys that rocked M3 is intact. Darren figures he'll see at least three shows on this leg of the tour(DLR Cast Meet-Up, anyone?), while Steve, alas, will not be able to. And some speculating and wondering: it would be a great time for any pre-show press, or any content from Dave...plus, revisiting the 90s - Dave was more visible than most folks remember with U.S. & Europe shows, The DLR Band album, and a lot of promotional activity; Dave gets praise from Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, updates on a bunch o' former Dave band members - new music from former Dave (and Ozzy) guitarist Joe Holmes, Jake Faun, and Frankie Tartufo (?!?) and some talk about the new Van Halen Balance album 30th anniversary package and much more. Stay on top of everything that Darren has going on with the Paltrocast, at YouTube, TikTok, Substack, Medium and at Paltrocast.com.

Send Steve a Text MessageWhat really holds most guitar players back? After teaching thousands of guitarists, I've discovered it's rarely about technical ability—it's about confidence. That feeling of certainty when you play, knowing who you are as a musician, and being comfortable in your own skin. The journey to guitar confidence follows five distinct phases, each building upon the last. It begins with curiosity—that moment when you hear Hendrix, Van Halen, or whoever your inspiration might be, and think "I want to do that!" This natural motivation fuels your early development. Next comes foundation building, where you develop the essential skills needed for your musical goals. This is where many players get distracted by "bright shiny objects" instead of focusing on the fundamentals that will truly advance their playing. The third phase—developing actual confidence—is where most guitarists get stuck. It requires something scary: being vulnerable enough to play for others and receive feedback. "I'll play with people once I'm better" becomes a perpetual excuse, creating a cycle where improvement stalls because you're not getting the feedback needed to grow. Breaking through this barrier transforms your playing.Once confidence develops, you enter the creative expression phase, where your playing begins to sound more human and personal. This naturally evolves into the final phase—musical identity. The liberating truth is that even guitar legends have limitations. Tommy Emanuel doesn't play like Eddie Van Halen, and Joe Bonamassa doesn't sound like Steve Vai. These players succeeded not by mastering everything, but by embracing who they are musically. The guitar truly is Pandora's box—endless possibilities that will outlive us all. Don't let that overwhelm you. Finding your center and developing confidence in your unique voice is the real path to becoming the guitarist you want to be. Where are you in these five phases, and what's your next step toward confident playing? Back in July 1984, Guitar Player magazine featured Eddie Van Halen on the cover. Since staff editor Jas Obrecht had already interviewed Eddie multiple times, the team asked him to create a crash course in Eddie's playing style. Eddie agreed, and music editor Jim Ferguson was sent to LA for the “My Tips for Beginners” section. For more advanced players, Eruption—Van Halen's legendary guitar-and-drums instrumental from 1978—was the obvious choice. But who could accurately transcribe such a groundbreaking piece? The answer: a young Steve Vai, fresh off recording his Flex-Able solo album. At just 23, Vai was a Berklee College of Music graduate and a member of Frank Zappa's band. His meticulous handwritten transcription of Eruption—complete with detailed performance notes—was nothing short of a work of art. Fast-forward 40 years: In January 2025, Jas posted a podcast interview with Vai from his Skyscraper era with David Lee Roth. The response was overwhelming, so we knew fans would love to see this historic transcription. Steve graciously gave his permission, joking that he might question its accuracy today after so many years and notes played! This original 1984 transcription is now archived in the University of North Carolina's Southern Folklife Collection, thanks to the efforts of Shaw Lentz and the SFC team. Now, we're bringing it to you in high-resolution detail!

Folks, we're stretching a bit on this one. Lynch noticed that Roger Waters performed "The Wall" at the Berlin wall in this month, and used that as an excuse to feature A Momentary Lapse of Reason, which was the latest studio album by Pink Floyd. Since that originally came out in 1987, we're asking you to squint a bit to see it's relevance to the summer of 1990. That being said...A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the first Pink Floyd album released after bassist and primary songwriter Roger Waters left the band. Waters had expected that Pink Floyd would simply disband, and was surprised when David Gilmour and Nick Mason decided to continue without him. Acrimony and lawsuits appeared, but in the end a Water-less Pink Floyd continued on.Unlike many prior Pink Floyd albums, this one is not playing off a single concept. Instead, it is a more traditional collection of songs. Gilmour presented the album as a return to earlier Pink Floyd material, which was perhaps a reaction to common critiques of their previous album "The Final Cut" as a Roger Waters solo effort masquerading as a Pink Floyd album. There are a number of well-known session musicians that participated in the making of this album. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number 3 on both the US and UK albums charts. The US tour was the most successful of the year, selling out almost every venue it played in the States. Roger Water's lawsuits would be overcome, and a settlement was reached between Waters and the band by the end of 1987.Lynch brings us this Pink Floyd reboot album for today's podcast and we're joined by guest host Julie Doran joins us on this episode. On the Turning AwayThis power ballad was co-written by Gilmour and British experimental composer Anthony Moore. It is an anti-war song, one of the more political Pink Floyd songs written since the departure of Waters. It begins with a solemn Gilmour vocal supported by understated keyboards, then builds to an almost orchestral conclusion. Learning to FlyA surprisingly upbeat song for the group, the inspiration for this first single is David Gilmour's experience learning to fly airplanes. At the time he would do practice flights in the mornings and work in the studio in the afternoons. It is also a metaphor for the band coming back together after splitting with Roger Waters. One SlipThe fourth US single discusses the long-term consequences of a one-night stand, and contains the lyrics that would become the title to the album as a whole. Gilmour co-wrote this song with Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera. Fans of bassist Tony Levin may recognize his work on a Chapman Stick in the instrumentation for this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Real Wild Child by Iggy Pop (from the motion picture “Problem Child”)This dark comedy starring John Ritter follows the trials of Ben Healy Jr. as he adopts a less-than-model child from a questionable adoption agency. STAFF PICKS:Stop by Jane's AddictionWayne leads off the staff picks with a college radio hit off the "Ritual De Lo Habitual" album. Lead singer Perry Farrell warns about apathy towards environmental disaster, telling people to turn off the smokestacks. "And the water will run, come a day, the water will run, no man will stand for things he had done."Brave New World by Michael PennRob brings us a jangly deeper cut with a song with rapid fire lyrics off Penn's "March" album. The song reflects confusion in where the singer is going, perhaps making a commentary on society as it heads into a "brave new world." "This may not be my best day, but this ain't no golden age. You looked pretty on the freeway. Let's drive into the brave new world."Give It Up by Hothouse FlowersBruce features a s song from an Irish group off their second album, "Home." This song that went to number 2 on the US Modern Rock chart is summed up in the lyrics, "Well, this song's inspired by a good man and his tune doing good for others, sing 'Amazing Grace' for you." Rub You the Right Way by Johnny GillJulie's staff pick is an upbeat hip hop song, and Gill's first single after he left New Edition earlier in the year. Despite the lyrics, Gill was the son of a minister and got his start in gospel music. He signed with Motown as a teenager. Gill had become very accustomed to performing live, and had a difficult time switching to studio work. Blue Sky Mine by Midnight OilLynch closes out the staff picks with the first single off Midnight Oil's seventh studio album. The inspiration for the song was the experience of workers in the Wittenoom asbestos mines in western Australia, where they contracted a variety of asbestos-related diseases. The "blue" in the title refers to "blue asbestos," a form of the mineral considered most hazardous. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are joined by a very special guest this week for Episode 551 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Tracii Guns tells us about his favorite pedals, plugins, and pajamas! Please be aware this episode contains infrequent swearing and drug references - not suitable for minors! This week the guys are pretty stoked to have one of Brian's all-time guitar heroes on the show. Tracii Guns is a legendary LA based guitarist, super talented player, and happens to be the founding member of a couple of huge bands you may have heard of. He also has a vast amount of stories and anecdotes to recount...and they are seriously funny. Brian drills straight into the culture of the Sunset Strip scene of the 1980s as the guys take a "behind the scenes" peek into the LA rock scene of that era. Tracii talks about some of the legendary bands he played alongside when LA Guns first made it, including Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, WASP, and a whole bunch more. Richard looks at the differences between the English and the US Music scene of that period and Tracii has some great insights and a mutual love of some classic British bands.Blake asks about the early days of Grunge and how that changed the direction of rock and Tracii gives us a candid and hilarious take on how that played out and what it meant for the musicians of the time. Tracii then tells us how Brian helped him through an existential rig crisis and you might be surprised by the fixes they came up with.http://www.lagunsmusic.com/ The Nigels, The Rock Sock, Kid Creole, Steve Vai, Rockman stories...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
