Our next guest is an absolute titan of modern guitar. She is a Berklee College of Music graduate who went from tearing up the solo underground to sharing stages with icons like Steve Vai and Guthrie Govan. Whether she is shredding animated metal riffs on tour with Dethklok, holding down the stage with Danny Elfman, or shooting 10-foot flames out of her guitar in Las Vegas for Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson ONE, her precision and melodic voice on the instrument are unmatched. She is fresh off the release of her incredible, synesthesia-inspired fourth studio album, Eventide, and she finally has her brand-new, ultra-purple signature Ibanez guitar, 'The Answer,' in her hands. Today on Verbal Shenanigans... the phenomenal NILI BROSH!"   We also talk about a tree hitting Scott's house, tell some tales of gross comics and play a game called "Axe or Ailment."  Have a listen!

This week, we bow down and raise up the almighty guitar heroes! The foundation of Rock n' Punk n' Metal is the guitar and the amazing sounds that those who wield them can make. Why did one of progressive metal's most legendary mad scientists walk away from traditional collaboration to protect his own creative sanity? On this week's episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, host Scott Penfold sits down with the incomparable Devin Townsend following the highly anticipated release of his massive, 24-track rock opera project, The Moth. In an incredibly open and elaborate conversation, Devin delves into the intense physical pain and personal life transformations that completely derailed and reshaped the direction of this decade-in-the-making symphonic masterpiece. Devin also takes a raw look back at his '90s catalog, reflecting on how he feels today about fronting Strapping Young Lad and stepping onto the global stage alongside Steve Vai for the infamous Sex & Religion album. While he reveals that his current relationship with Vai is excellent, Devin drops a bombshell truth about his creative process, admitting that he actually "does his friends favors by not working with them" because of how difficult he can be in the studio unless he maintains total control. Voices From The Underground Segment: In the second half of the show, we shift our focus to the grassroots independent scene. Scott catches up with Niko and Thursday from the rising Spring Hill, Florida-based original metal band Silver Bullet Smile . We discuss their breakout success on the unsigned charts, their studio workflow crafting thunderous tracks like "Man In The Moon", and the absolute grit required to break through the modern underground metal circuit. Devin Townsend goes all out on new double-single ‘Prepare For War / The Big Snit' Taken from ambitious, orchestral-metal opus The MothThe Moth is about the journey—but it is also about arrival”Canadian metal maverick Devin Townsend recently announced the long-awaited release of his ambitious, orchestral-metal opus ‘The Moth', out 29th May 2026 via InsideOutMusic. An album over a decade in the making, it existed in the back of Devin Townsend's mind as his “life's work”. Then, about six years ago, after an acoustic show in Amsterdam, Townsend was approached by the head of the North Netherlands' Orchestra and Choir with an offer; and with that moment The Moth stopped being an idea and began to become a reality.Today he is pleased to reveal another part of The Moth narrative in the shape of the visceral and heavy double-single ‘Prepare For War / The Big Snit'. Watch the video, directed by Studio Sparks, here: https://youtu.be/wdhwXKtVBR0Devin comments: “This is a track that essentially acts as a ‘soundtrack for an unmade movie' …if you think of it as a ‘song' it's not really going to work, but if you think of it as a cinematic ‘experience' that is representative of the final moments before a ‘fundamental change', it's a cool adventure. The name ‘The Big Snit' was taken from a short cartoon from the Canadian national film board by the same name I grew up with. If you get a chance, look it up on YouTube … I guess my version here is simply a kind of heavy metal version of that :)”Stream the single here: https://dvn.lnk.to/PrepareForWarTheBigSnit If The Moth has a central gravitational theme, Townsend names it plainly: true self-acceptance. Something sturdier than slogans, closer to a practiced willingness to face what is uncomfortable without turning away. As Devin explains: “The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature—one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable—only the spirit.”At the hardest moments, when abandoning the project might have seemed rational, Townsend points to the team as the decisive factor. A host of incredible musicians and contributors participated throughout the course of this process, as well as the North Netherlands Orchestra & Choir and orchestrators Joseph Stevenson & Niels Bye Nielsen. Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks, the podcast that explores the healing power of music with the people who live it every day. In today's episode, host James Cox sits down with a true musical chameleon – Jeff Young, the former Megadeth guitarist whose story stretches far beyond the thrash‑metal spotlight. From the gritty rehearsal rooms of Boston to the buzzing festivals of Canada, Jeff recounts life on the road with Kings of Thrash, the frantic pace of touring, and the unforgettable moments that make every gig feel like a trip back to 1987. He dives deep into his formative years at the Guitar Institute of Technology, where legends such as Frank Gambale, Steve Morris, and Tommy Tedesco shaped his education, and reflects on how formal training both sharpened his technique and challenged his creative instincts. The conversation quickly widens, tracing Jeff's love for funk in Dayton, his immersion in Brazilian rhythms and flamenco, and his reverence for jazz greats like Frank Gambale and Scott Henderson. He shares the story behind his newest record, Revolutions – a labor‑of‑love analog project recorded on two‑inch tape, a statement against the digital overwhelm of today's music world.Listeners will also get insider anecdotes about missed opportunities (a David Lee Roth gig, a Steve Vai invitation), the tragedy and triumph of Jason Becker's legacy, and how Jeff's eclectic palette—rock, jazz, classical, world music—continues to evolve.Stay tuned as we unpack the myth, the music, and the man behind the metal, and discover why Jeff Young's voice is far more than a riff—it's a bridge between genres, cultures, and generations.Grab your headphones, let the vibes lift your frequency, and remember: when words fail, music speaks.

The hour closes with “Kim on a Whim,” focused on proposed federal action revoking passports for individuals with unpaid child support and the tension between enforcement and personal rights. Hour 4 opens with Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway detailing legal battles over control of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Board, kratom enforcement actions, and ongoing election integrity efforts tied to voter roll audits. The conversation shifts into the same passport-child support policy debate before moving into sports with Tom Ackerman, who breaks down a tough Cardinals loss to the Padres, Missouri State's major hire of Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, and a strong weekend for local teams including the Battlehawks. The show closes with political commentary arguing Democrats are positioning to reverse Trump-era policies while downplaying economic developments like the Granite City Steel reopening and broader manufacturing gains. Ep 53: The iconic guitarist and composer talks SatchVai Band, his earliest inspirations, and his plans for the future Hello, music lovers!  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, musician and music journalist Jeff Miers. Today's guest is one of the most critically lauded and commercially successful rock guitarists of his generation. Since the 1987 release of his second album, the evergreen Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani has been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards and sold more than 10 million albums.  And he did all of this with a body of work that is almost exclusively instrumental. Taking a page from the book of the late Jeff Beck, Satriani blended a penchant for memorable melodies, intense and ambitious arrangements, and considerable virtuosity, in the process, becoming the best-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time.  For his latest venture, Satriani has teamed with one of his oldest friends and collaborators - another legend, who also happens to be a former student of Satriani's - the great Steve Vai, to form The SatchVai Band. (For our listeners here in Buffalo, NY, you'll have the opportunity to catch this powerhouse in action at Kleinhans Music Hall on Tuesday, May 12.) During our chat, Joe - who also happens to be one of the nicest guys I've ever encountered in the music business - reflected on his earliest musical inspirations, the importance of jazz in the development of his musical imagination, why the SatchVai Band puts a perma-grin on his face, and his passion for the soon-to-be-released first studio album from that band.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Joe Satriani… Produced by 678Main Studio and Creative Services https://678main.com --- Follow Why Music Matters on social media https://instagram.com/whymusicmatterspodcast https://www.facebook.com/whymusicmatterspodcast https://twitter.com/wmmpod

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Bob Lanzetti, best known as one of the founding members of Snarky Puppy. I've admired Bob's playing for a long time, so getting the chance to talk with him felt especially meaningful. We begin with something many musicians quietly carry with them: the fear of hand issues and how that concern evolves over the course of a career. Bob reflects honestly on how he thinks about it now compared to earlier years. From there, we rewind to the beginning—growing up around his dad's guitar, discovering The Beatles, and the simple invitation that changed everything: “Learn this song and you can sit in with my band.” That moment set Bob firmly on the path toward becoming a guitarist. He traces his journey through early mentors, jazz studies, and eventually to the University of North Texas, where he found a musical community that would change his life—and where Snarky Puppy first came together. We spend time talking about the musical ecosystem around North Texas as well, especially the gospel and R&B scenes that shaped Bob's ear in ways the classroom couldn't. Bob shares how Snarky Puppy actually learns and rehearses music—often through oral tradition, demos, and Logic sessions—and how the band's three-guitar setup works without stepping on each other's sonic space. Along the way, he reflects on something younger musicians often overlook: the importance of restraint, listening, and self-balancing within a band. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on Bob's Nosferatu project, where he composed and performed an original score for the classic silent film during the COVID years. That project opened the door to exploring 20th-century classical textures, string writing, layered guitars, and production techniques. We wrap up by talking about the wide range of influences that shape Bob's music—from Charlie Christian and Jim Hall to Sonic Youth and Derek Bailey—and what's ahead in 2026, including GroundUP Festival, touring with Snarky Puppy alongside the Metropole Orchestra, his trio work, and the growing role of producing in his creative life.Key TakeawaysMusicians confront physical concerns over time — long careers require resilience and perspective.Early invitations can shape a life path — a simple opportunity to sit in with a band set Bob on the guitar journey.Community matters — the University of North Texas and the surrounding Dallas scene were foundational for Snarky Puppy.Listening and restraint define great band playing — especially in complex ensemble settings like a three-guitar lineup.Musical learning often happens by ear — oral tradition and demos play a huge role in how bands develop material.Creative side projects expand the palette — Bob's Nosferatu score opened the door to new textures and production ideas.Producing can become another creative outlet — shaping the sound of recordings scratches the same itch as performing.Music from the EpisodeB - Bob LanzettiAnonymous - Bob LanzettiThe Seven Deadly Sins (from Nosferatu) - Bob LanzettiJenny is a Donkey - Bob LanzettiAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. What does it really take to become a guitar virtuoso? According to Steve Vai, the answer is surprisingly simple—yet incredibly demanding. In this episode, we dive into Vai's powerful insight that elite-level guitar playing isn't a mystery at all. It's an “intellectual exercise” built on relentless discipline, focus, and countless hours of dedicated practice. From the explosive shred era of the 1980s to today's social media landscape filled with jaw-dropping players, virtuosity has long been the dream of aspiring guitarists. Steve Vai's formula proves that greatness is within reach for anyone willing to commit to the journey—though not everyone will enjoy the hard work it requires! Alongside this inspiring discussion, I also demo the VIXXNOXX LED-powered guitar picks, showcasing their vibrant glow and performance while playing my Taylor SF Giants acoustic guitar. These eye-catching picks add a unique visual flair, perfect for live performances and late-night jam sessions. You get a front-row seat to how Michael Grande turned hard-won tech chops and late-night studio hacks into real music-business wins. From escaping NAMM chaos and leveraging smart PR and management, to transforming a throwaway “stupid idea” into Card Chords—an Amazon-topping guitar tool born from a Cricut, Guitar Center testing, and sheer persistence—you see how necessity, experimentation, and saying yes the first time landed him in Jimi Hendrix's old bedroom at Electric Lady Studios, shredding in the lineage of Vai and Satriani, and inventing Tone Picks on the fly. Along the way, you're reminded that when you know you're right, you embrace it, protect your IP, and keep swinging big—whether that's launching music schools, eyeing Shark Tank with a bold offer, or pivoting your career from Wall Street CTO and Certified Ethical Hacker to full-on guitar innovator. Then you're pushed to rethink how you teach, lead, and build your own music brand. You learn why great schools and studios run on clear mission statements, strong unique selling propositions, and a coaching mindset that focuses on the student, not the curriculum—getting them hooked on the songs they actually want to play, then turning them toward what they need. You see how asking potential customers for their own answers, treating every audience like they matter, and showing up like a coach instead of a teacher all point to one core operating principle: you're never off-duty, because you Always Be Performing—ALWAYS. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 525 – Monday, March 16th, 2026 March 16th: Freedom of Information Day Guest co-host: Michael Grande from Card Chords and more 00:02:14 Getting out of NAMM 00:03:10 Have a good PR guy!
