This time we’re examining the Guitar World Survival Guide, a feature in which dozens of famous and famous-ish guitarists offer their five tips to survive the once-thriving cutthroat music industry. You’ll hear pearls from Zakk Wylde, Yngwie, Wayne Static, Ted Nugent, Dimebag Darrell, Tom Morello, Dave Mustaine, and much, much more. It’s a fascinating snapshot of artists on the rise and fall 25 years ago.

This week on Heavy Metal Tones, we dive headfirst into the unmistakable roar of Zakk Wylde and the enduring legacy of Black Label Society. Episode 272 puts the band's latest album under the microscope, exploring how its tone, attitude, and riff power stack up against the crushing foundation laid by the first four records: Sonic Brew, Stronger Than Death, 1919 Eternal, and The Blessed Hellride. From gritty Southern sludge to soaring melodic leads and that signature pinch-harmonic scream, we trace the evolution of BLS tone and ask the big question: does the new album carry the same fire, or does it forge a different path? Expect deep riff analysis, tone talk, and a celebration of one of modern metal's most recognisable sounds.Metal Roos interview with Zakk Wylde about the new albumhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOJm5BKxip8&t=161sSign up at Patreon.com/heavymetaltones to help support the show for just $2 a month this will help keep the lights on and the mic humming Hosted on Acast. Zakk Wylde opens up about Ozzy's final show, the 17 days that followed, Dimebag's unfinished recordings, and the making of Black Label Society's crushing new album Engines of Demolition. Topics Include: Zakk runs on 14 pots of Valhalla coffee every single day. He was invited to Back to the Beginning well in advance. Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, and Ritchie Blackmore are mythical heroes to Zakk. No More Tears was rehearsed but Ozzy pulled it on the day. Ozzy was giddy meeting Axl Rose — couldn't believe it was happening. Zakk watched Sabbath's final set alongside Axl Rose and Sharon Osbourne. Just 17 days after the show, Ozzy passed away unexpectedly. They'd been texting memes and planning another record together right until the end. Zakk envisioned a global Back to the Beginning charity tour series. A sober Zakk and Ozzy watched their blasted crew destroy a Tokyo restaurant. Dimebag left hours of unfinished song ideas on tape for potential release. Playing Dime's solos means staying faithful — like Stevie Ray covering Hendrix. Zakk and Eddie Van Halen's amp, calling it life-altering history. Engines of Demolition was built across several years alongside the Pantera Celebration tour. On this episode of Talking Guitars on Johnny Beane TV, we kick things off with the wild-looking D'Addario Microfiber Polishing Mitt—yeah, it looks like an oven glove, but it's built to keep your favorite axes spotless without chemicals or streaks. Super cool gear and an affiliate link is down below if you want one. Then we jump into an awesome story about Ozzy Osbourne and Zakk Wylde, sharing one of Zakk's favorite untold Ozzy moments. From there, we dive into the legend of Randy Rhoads and his iconic guitars, including that killer custom Les Paul. We also check out the D'Addario Pick Holder 360—a slick little way to store 12 of your favorite picks—and the D'Addario XLR8 String Cleaner/Lubricant to keep your strings fast, smooth, and sounding fresh. Affiliate links for all the gear are down below. And don't forget: this Monday I'm going LIVE from a guitar shop early afternoon Eastern. Make sure you're subscribed, turn on those bell notifications, and smash that thumbs up if you're into guitars, rock stories, and killer gear.

JJO's Discover New Music Podcast

You gotta have the cake first...but the icing is pretty damn good too! This week's guest on Discover New Music is the legendary Zakk Wylde. In between cracking jokes, Wylde broke down creating the latest Black Label Society album "Engines of Destruction" with a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants approach. Make a pot of coffee and work on a riff. Go on a food run and work out some lyrics. Well it worked and now we have the first new BLS record since '21. Wylde also shares a sweet story about Ozzy that you won't want to miss. As always a quick round of Rapid Fire is played...in a very diplomatic fashion.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

According to a book I just snagged from the libarry, Ronnie Van Skynryd once opened for Black Sabbath and tried to kill his own guitarist while Sabbath guitarist ZAKK WYLDE looked on in horror. Yes you read that correctly.  Also I found out today that Mojo Nixon died on a day not far from the day the drummer he portrayed in "Great Balls of Fire" also died. Sounds like a good reason to go back to the earliest episodes of this podcast and relive my "Great Balls of Fire" review with copious amounts of Nick Toshces history of Jerry Lee, eh? What ELSE you got going on, anyway? CHRIST!  Anyone who listens to this episode tacitly endorses my purchase of a $60 3-channel mixer pedal I used to record some music with over the weekend.  The old but still active Rock History bonus feed here https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money: PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirt designs with defeatist messaging delivered via bright colors and childish graphics: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Up7xGgjioEC07bjwu4mQ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justtheworstever/ Send me an email with show suggestions: Justtheworstever@gmail.com Suicide Prevention, Text/Call: 988 https://afsp.org/ National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 https://www.rainn.org/resources

The episode also features host Scott Penfold breaking down the latest heavy metal news, including the new Bruce Dickinson solo album, Deftones' catalog deal, the Motley Crue/Mick Mars verdict, and the Grammys' ongoing relationship with metal. I've interviewed a lot of metal musicians over the years, but some conversations carry a different kind of weight. This one does. This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast, we're joined by Bob Daisley — a foundational architect of heavy metal whose fingerprints are all over some of the genre's most iconic records, yet whose name is still too often left out of the mainstream narrative. What happens when a 40-year-old metal legend discovers he's still got more fire in his belly than anyone expected? Welcome to the untold story of Ozzy Osbourne's “No Rest for the Wicked” — the 1988 double-platinum beast that time somehow forgot, despite launching one of metal's most influential guitar partnerships and serving up the perfect middle finger to moral crusaders everywhere. This episode digs deep into the album that saw Ozzy team up with unknown 19-year-old guitarist Zakk Wylde, whose pinch harmonics and dive bombs would reshape the sound of metal for decades to come. From the Jimmy Swaggart revenge anthem “Miracle Man” to the progressive showcase “Fire in the Sky,” hosts Jason Ziad, Tim Minnichi, and Chip Midnight explore why this record deserves a place in the conversation alongside Ozzy's acknowledged classics. The conversation reveals fascinating details about Wylde's discovery story — from a warped New Jersey bar band cassette to becoming metal royalty through photographer Mark Weiss — and examines how this album bridged the gap between Ozzy's glam-metal phase and his 1990s progressive direction. You'll also hear about the controversial “Miracle Man” music video featuring 60 pigs who simultaneously defecated when the music started, creating perhaps the most literal metaphor in metal history. If you love Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, or any band that understands the power of crushing riffs paired with theatrical mayhem, this episode unpacks a criminally underrated chapter in metal history.Episode Highlights:0:00 – Opening & Context – Why “No Rest for the Wicked” was overshadowed despite massive commercial success5:12 – The Zakk Wylde Discovery Story – How a $3 cassette tape and Mark Weiss photography changed metal forever15:30 – Jimmy Swaggart Revenge Plot – Breaking down the “Miracle Man” controversy and Ozzy's perfect timing25:45 – “Miracle Man” – The vocoder effect that terrified metal purists and the pig-filled music video32:18 – Guitar Evolution – How Wylde's style bridged Randy Rhoads' legacy with 90s metal's future41:22 – “Fire in the Sky” – The album's most progressive moment and strongest vocal performance48:30 – “Crazy Babies” – Examining the album's MTV breakthrough single55:17 – “Breaking All the Rules” – Why this track sounds like Ratt but hits harder62:45 – The Lost Songs – Deep cuts like “Demon Alcohol” and “Bloodbath in Paradise”71:33 – Commercial Success vs. Legacy – Why a #13 album vanished from setlists78:20 – Meeting Ozzy Stories – Personal encounters with the Prince of Darkness himselfReady to rediscover metal history?
