A decade after what fans feared would be the last flight of The Eagles — SoCal's ultimate 1970s soft rockers — band mates Timothy Schmit and Don Felder teamed up with friends to try to create a new band, one they wanted to call “The Malibu Men's Choir.”Well, that effort failed — the new group never got off the ground — but their songwriting collaboration with Jim Capaldi and Paul Carrack did produce a hit for a re-energized Eagles when the band rebounded for its 1994-96 “Hell Freezes Over” Tour.As diehard Eagles enthusiasts know, the tour's name hearkened back a dozen years. Asked in 1982 by People magazine if he'd ever get the band back together, Don Henley was snide. Sure, he said, “When hell freezes over."When the reunion did come to pass — with a lineup of Henley, Felder, Schmit, Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh performing live in April 1994 at Warner Bros. Studios for an MTV special — Frey quipped, "For the record, we never broke up. We just took a 14-year vacation."Here Comes The SongHowever, The Eagles didn't have much new material for the subsequent tour and accompanying album. That brings us to “Love Will Keep Us Alive.” Schmit already knew this song, because Capaldi and Carrack wrote it a few years earlier during that ill-fated Malibu Men's Choir project. On The Eagles' tour album, the song reached No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart despite not being released as a single. Critics noted that Schmit's rare lead vocal gave the ballad a tender fragility. The song was nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.Meanwhile, Carrack — who may have had his own voice in mind when he co-wrote it — also recorded song on his 1996 album, Blue Views. Then 15 years later, he and Schmit recorded it together in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a release on the Carrack label. Our Take on the TuneBack in June, rolling into Huntington's West End to play at a picnic to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the city's beloved Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the band played its then-new cover of The Eagles' first big hit, “Peaceful Easy Feeling.”“That was great!” the hostess said. “Play another Eagles tune.” Uh-oh, there wasn't another Eagles song in the Flood repertoire. Well, not yet, anyway. Then Randy Hamilton stepped up.“I think I got one,” Randy said at a later band rehearsal. It turned out that for years Randy had been singing “Love Will Keep Us Alive,” ever since he had performed it at his sister's wedding. “It's her favorite song,” he added. When he started singing for his Flood brothers, the tune just naturally slipped into a groove. Here from last week's rehearsal is Randy leading the way! This is a public episode. We are so stoked this week to have Mark Karan, a living legend, on No Simple Road this week! Mark Karan is best known for performing with the extended Grateful Dead family. He has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young and Sophie B. Hawkins. Mark also tours with an array of amazing musicians in his own “Mark Karan's Buds”, where his soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work meld with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of his friends in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk and whatever else the muse might bring. In addition to his originals, as well as those of songwriter friends, Mark covers a range of eclectic songs from Johnny “Guitar” Watson's “You Can Stay (But the Noize Must Go)” and Peter Tosh's “Don't Look Back”, to the Kinks' “Lazin' on a Sunny Afternoon” or Joe Jackson's “Fools in Love” — his unique musical taste and song choices are the hallmark of these shows, and always crowd pleasers for his nationwide, loyal fanbase. Paul Cimins interviews Mitch Malloy, an American singer, best known as the former lead vocalist for the rock band Great White from 2018 to 2022. Malloy studied music at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. He got his first break when he was signed to RCA. Malloy's self-titled first album featured session musicians such as Mickey Curry, Hugh McDonald and Michael Thompson.[1] His first single as a solo artist on RCA records, "Anything At All", was a top 20 rock charting hit and a pop hit in the US.[5] His third single, "Our Love Will Never Die", earned him an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.[1] His second album, Ceilings And Walls, featured guest musicians such as Bernie Leadon, Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack.[6] He auditioned to be the singer of hard rock band Van Halen after Sammy Hagar's departure.[7][8][9] Malloy recorded various demos with the band, and Eddie Van Halen gave Malloy an instrumental demo to use for his own endeavors. This song was released by Malloy in 2015 as "It's the Right Time".[10]The riff reemerged in the sessions leading up to Van Halen's 1998 studio album Van Halen III in the song "That's Why I Love You." The song was scrapped from the record in favor of "Josephina."[11] Malloy has had a lengthy career featuring in various bands as lead singer, releasing solo albums, and making guest appearances as well. His latest album marks his first time completing an entire release all on his own.[12] Visit  his website to learn more about him. www.mitchmalloy.com

Note that Elvis Costello was co-producer of these tracks. "Tempted" was one of many fine recordings from their top-notch LP, East Side Story. Though the group had been huge in their native U.K. for several years, that album was the first one to garner any attention State-side, and this was their first chart single here. (Though, oddly, it wasn't even released on 45 rpm in the U.K.!) The single has a slightly edited version of the 4:02 album track. Five minutes ago I didn't know this song existed. When I decided on the title song for this week, I was thinking of the Paul Carrack penned track (recorded by Ace in 1974) and it was only when I was searching out a link that I discovered this gem by George & Ira Gershwin.Of course there are multiple versions too choose from, and although I am not a card-carrying Van Morrison fan, I do think this is a cracking arrangement. The song was originally included in the musical Funny Face, but after some jiggery-pokery-publisher-interference it was replaced by He Loves and She Loves. There you go then, a little bit of musical 'who-knew' for a Saturday morning, that only happens because I can't count my episode numbers properly.Stay safe. How Long Has This Been Going On - Van MorrisonTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Rod has had an incredible career - continuing to perform live and release new music with The Zombies - he was also once part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and has recorded with The Who, Chris Rea, Roger Daltrey, Paul Carrack and Andrew Lloyd Webber. He's also been producer for the likes of Gilbert O'Sullivan, Tanita Tikaram and Nanci Griffith. In 2018, Paul Weller released his 14th solo album True Meanings, with Rod Argent contributing to two stand out tracks (on an album full of stand out tracks!) - he plays Hammond organ on The Soul Searchers and Mellotron & Piano on White Horses. You can find more info on Rod's music in my show notes at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/episode-92-rod-argent Thanks for listening - make sure that you subscribe / follow and leave a review - and if you want to support the podcast financially, you can buy me a virtual coffee (£3) or our new official merchandise at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/store
