Ugly American Werewolf in London: Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow

By the mid-70s, Jeff Beck was a bit of an enigma. He started out as a blues player in The Yardbirds replacing Eric Clapton and sharing the stage for few shows with Jimmy Page. Then he formed The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart as his lead singer and Ronnie Wood on the bass where the band tried to be more commercial. He created one of the great power trios with Beck, Bogert and Appice and while they were a strong live draw, they didn't get a lot of radio play. By 1975 Jeff, who was never one to stay still musically, decided to put together his first Jeff Beck album. Instead of blues and hard rock based riffs he melded with Max Middleton on piano who helped write the songs, Phil Chen on the bass, and Richard Bailey to create some jazzy jams that allowed everyone to shine. However, he also had help from heavyweights George Martin, who produced the album as he did The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder, who wrote a couple of songs for Jeff including the sublime Cause We Ended As Lovers. It may have originally been a bittersweet song for his wife Syreeta but Jeff makes it his own by laying emotional guitar over over the mellow notes. And Jeff shows off his jazzy abilities on songs like Constipated Duck (great title), space funk on AIR blower, frenetic playing on Scatterbrain and one of his real signatures, Freeway Jam. Many of these became live staples of his for decades and the album not only went to #4 in the US but sold platinum despite the fact that there are no vocals on the album. With room to explore, Jeff led this group on a fun, experimental and tight journey to create a guitar masterpiece which is more jazz than rock. This Week on America's Podcast – Episode 500! Break out the champagne (or at least that dusty bottle of bottom-shelf whiskey you've been saving for a special occasion) because we've hit the big 500! And what better way to celebrate than bringing back the one and only Lee Gerstmann reuniting him with Travis Perrotta for a nostalgia-fueled rock ‘n' roll extravaganza? This week, we crank it up to 11 and dive headfirst into Black Sabbath's "Vol. 4"—a record so heavy it could bench press your dad's record collection. But that's not all! We've gathered a who's who of our podcasting pals to shower us with congrats (and possibly roast us just a little). But wait! There's more! Tracks of the Week keep the party going: Marc brings "Come On" by the Black Crowes, because nothing says celebration like Southern rock swagger. Jerry hits us with "The Reckoning" by The Reality of Yourself—because, let's be honest, 500 episodes in, we're still trying to figure ourselves out. Mooger delivers "Waiting for Darkness" by Ozzy Osbourne, proving that even in a milestone episode, a little doom and gloom never hurt anybody. Lee throws in "Lose Myself in You," by Beck, Bogert & Appice reminding us why we missed him in the first place. Travis closes the set with "Violent Pornography" by System of a Down, because why not? And in true throwback fashion, Lee blesses us with an original track—"Walking." We're grateful for every listener, every guest, and every weird, wild tangent we've gone on over these 500 episodes. So don't wait another 500 to drop us that five-star review! Raise a glass, turn up the volume, and remember—life's too short not to have that shot of alcohol you always wanted!

Send us a textRock Legend: A Conversation With Drumming Icon Carmine Appice#vanillafudge #rocklegends #rockdrummer #carmineappice #classicrock #rodstewart #jeffbeck #cactus #bluemurder  #kingcobra As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King‘s X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. Carmine Appice is one of the few drum legends we have left. What's interesting to me about his career is that his name is usually bigger than the bands he's in whether it's Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck, Bogart, Appice, King Kobra, Blue Murder or his side work with Rod Stewart and Ozzy. These days he's turning his attention to Cactus, who recently released a new album called Temple of Blues where they redo a bunch of the classic Cactus songs and invite their friends along. Buddies like Dee Snider, Ted Nugent, Joe Bonamassa, Dug Pinnick, and tons more feature prominently on this all-star disc. We also discuss each of these Other projects as well as a few more. Carmine's been at it for 60 years and only gotten better. Enjoy!  www.carmineappice.net www.cactusrocks.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Any band named Cactus has got to be raw and heavy.  And that's just what these boys have been and are since the band's formation in 1970. Referred to when they first formed as the “American Led Zeppelin,” the band's reputation as supreme masters of relentless hard rock still precedes them and is well deserved. Cactus was formed in 1970 from the ashes of Vanilla Fudge when Appice and former Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert's plans to form a band with Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had a nasty automobile accident that sidelined him for a lengthy period-of-time. The original lineup featured Appice, Bogert, former Mitch Ryder guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. This lineup released three classic albums - Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971) – all of which charted in the Billboard Top 200 and that still hold up well today.  Carmine's playing has also been a huge influence on drummers including Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), Neal Peart (Rush), Phil Collins (Genesis), Brian Taylor (Queen), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and countless others.  He was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. We check in with legendary drummer Carmine Appice ( Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck, Bogart, Appice...Rod Stewart, Ozzy) this month to chat about the new CACTUS album.... it album merges the current members of Cactus with a big-name, star laden, ensemble of guest artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences.   Featured along with the current Cactus band is a who's who of blues and rock icons: Guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers,  Warren Hayes, Vernon Reid, Steve Stevens, Johnny A (The Yardbirds), Ty Tabor (King's X) and bassists  Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King's X)  Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Kenny Aaronson (ex- Joan Jet and The Yardbirds), as well as members of  Government Mule, Vixen, Rainbow, Zebra, and Whitesnake.   Vocalist Dee Snider of Twisted Sister appears on the band's remake of the Howlin' Wolf classic “Evil,” and Appice's bandmate in Vanilla Fudge Mark Stein turns in a powerful vocal on Little Richard's “Long Tall Sally.” A second version of “Guiltless Glider,” appears as a bonus track with former Judas Priest vocalist, Ripper Owens. In addition to Appice on drums and vocals on all tracks, original Cactus guitarist Jim McCarty also appears on Temple of Blues.    The new album contains reimagined versions of some of Cactus's most legendary songs with the current band and guests putting a new spin on these bad-ass tunes that are among the heaviest of heavy blues-rock ever recorded. “The music of Cactus has always been steeped in the blues tradition,” says Appice, who wanted the group to re-visit its best songs within a modern rock approach to traditional blues. “We kept hearing from so many of our music celebrity friends how much Cactus influenced them and how they would love to be a guest on a Cactus album. Any band named Cactus has got to be raw and heavy.  And that's just what these boys have been and are since the band's formation in 1970.Referred to when they first formed as the “American Led Zeppelin,” the band's reputation as supreme masters of relentless hard rock still precedes them and is well deserved.http://www.cactusrocks.nethttps://www.facebook.com/cactusrocks/

Raw and in your face, we hope you like it hot!”"Dunsmuir has given us the opportunity to explore some of our favourite heavy metal influences” adds Davis. "We strove to create something I hope will inspire a lot of head banging all over the world.”Fallon adds, "We turned out some serious metal on this record and it shreds. The concept behind the lyrics is comprised of 10 tales from the survivors of a shipwreck. What had been intended as a scientific expedition, quickly deteriorates into a struggle to survive both the natural and supernatural world.”Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76

Rock Icon Carmine Appice drops by to chat about Vanilla Fudge history and their local tour dates in the NorthEast in May! Carmine was in various bands after Vanilla Fudge, including Cactus, Beck, Bogart and Appice, Rod Stewart, King Cobra, Blue Murder and even toured with Ozzy Osbourne! Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create “psychedelic symphonic rock” an eclectic genre which would, among its many offshoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Although, at first, the band did not record original material, they were best known for their dramatic heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs which they developed into works of epic proportion. Originally, Vanilla Fudge was a blue-eyed soul cover band called The Pigeons, formed in  1965 with organist, Mark Stein, bassist, Tim Bogert and drummer, Joey Brennan, and guitarist, vocalist and US Navy veteran, Vince Martell. They built a following by gigging extensively up and down the East Coast, and earned extra money by providing freelance in-concert backing for hit-record girl groups. In early 1966, the group recorded a set of eight demos that were released several years later as “While the World Was Eating Vanilla Fudge.”In 1968, Vanilla Fudge headlined the Fillmore West with Steve Miller. The group then performed “You Keep Me Hangin' On” on The Ed Sullivan Show, and released their second album, “The Beat Goes On.” Despite its avant-garde conceptualization and execution, the LP was a hit and climbed into the Top Twenty. That summer, Atco reissued “You Keep Me Hangin' On,” and the second time around it climbed into the Top Ten. It was followed by Renaissance, one of Vanilla Fudge's best albums, which also hit the Top Twenty. The band had three albums in the Top One Hundred, two of which were in the Top Twenty and one in the Top Five Single. The band toured with Jimi Hendrix, played dates equal billed or headlined with groups such as Cream, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, among many others; late in the year, they toured with the fledgling Led Zeppelin as their opening act.For more  on Vanilla Fudge click on the linkhttps://vanillafudge.com

Legendary iconic drummer Carmine Appice drops  by to chat about The Rod Experience shows....his release of Beck, Bogart and Appice Boxed set "Live From Japan" and more!      As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. In ‘76, he joined Rod Stewart‘s band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewart‘s biggest hits, “Do Ya Think I‘m Sexy' and “Young Turks.' He left Stewart to record his first solo album, “Rockers', and tour Japan and North America with an allstar band. . In the early 80's, he toured with OZZY Osborne ,Ted Nugent . In the mid 80's, he formed King Kobra for two Capitol albums and international touring And in the late 80's, Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record “Momentary Lapse of Reason' and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnake‘s John Sykes and The Firm‘s Tony Franklin. In the early 90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group. As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). He was the first Rock Drummer and Rock Musician to conduct instructional clinics and symposiums around the world.https://carmineappice.net

Over a remarkable 50-year career, Jeff Beck's style of guitar playing reshaped the world of music. One of the essential guitarists of the British Invasion, Beck possessed a mercurial, lyrical style that sounded equally at home in thunderous blues-rock and soft-focus fusion. He played both styles in his long career, channeling psychedelia, heavy metal, and jazz-rock as he did so. In this episode, Alex pays tribute to the late, great guitarist with a few special guests. Vernon Reid joins to talk about the impact that Beck had on the world of music, including his work with Stevie Wonder and the complicated story behind the song Superstition. Carmine Appice shares stories from their days in Beck, Bogert, and Appice, the legendary supergroup they formed in the early 70's, and explains his decision to pass on being part of Jeff's ‘Blow by Blow' album and tour in order to join Rod Stewart's band. Beck's longtime publicist Melissa Dragich joins the conversation and reminisces about a missed opportunity between Beck and Prince, and music journalist Dave Rubin describes that one time he saw Beck put BB King on notice.Listen to the playlist inspired by this episode on Spotify, curated by Alex SkolnickRead Alex's essay on Jeff Beck: “Goodbye PorkPie Strat”Watch the 2018 documentary on Jeff Beck: “The Jeff Beck Story: Still On The Run”Follow Alex on IG and Twitter @alexskonickMoods & Modes is presented by Osiris Media. The album is a classic example of “A Covid Project.” Drummer Extraordinaire/ composer/ producer Carmine Appice (the musician who never sleeps…) and hot LA Session multi-instrumentalist/ guitar virtuoso Fernando Perdomo (featured prominently in the Netflix popular documentary ECHO IN THE CANYON and who recently released the TRIBUTE TO PAUL McCARTNEY'S RAM album) didn't even know each other just before the album was made. They were introduced online via the family of famed producer Tom Dowd. They started exchanging recorded tracks and 9 months later they had written and recorded a complete instrumental album, ENERGY OVERLOAD. A world-wide deal with Cleopatra Records followed soon after, and now the duo is looking at doing live shows and a 2nd album (with or without vocals). Perdomo has a myriad of projects and Appice still works with three other bands: Vanilla Fudge, Cactus and King Kobra. I have both Fernando and Carmine available for interviews. Please give the record a listen (streaming link below) and check out the first video, “Rocket To The Sun.”

What a powerhouse trifecta of interviews this week!  In our 2nd round of interviews from RockNpod 2021, Court and Matt interview Tora Tora guitarist Keith Douglas, Grammy award-winning producer and engineer Toby Wright, and legendary drummer Vinnie Appice (Black Sabbath, DIO, The Last in Line).   First, we talk to lead guitarist Keith Douglas about his long and storied career in Memphis-based blues-rock outfit Tora Tora.  Then, we had a fun conversation with multi-platinum producer Toby Wright, the man behind some of the greatest albums ever recorded -- Alice in Chains, Metallica, Korn, KISS, Black Sabbath and many more.  Wright provided some illuminating insight into the recording process behind albums like "Jar of Flies", "AIC Unplugged" and "...And Justice for All."  Finally, we talk with rock titan, percussionist, and all-around nice guy Vinnie Appice about his time in Black Sabbath, DIO, and his current work with Vivian Campbell in Last in Line.  This episode has something for everyone!   We couldn't have come up with a better way to conclude season 1 of the Rock and Metal Profs.  We are taking a brief hiatus to research and record new episodes.  Season 2 starts in October and we are fired up!  We'll kick it off with a trio of episodes on metal gods Judas Priest!   We appreciate you downloading, listening, and supporting the show.  Thank you sincerely from Court and Matt!

Carmine Appice on his early days with Cactus, Beck Bogart & Appice, Vanilla Fudge and eventually working with Rod Stewart and co-writing "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act. Source CarmineAppice.netLegendary drummer Carmine Appice's GUITAR ZEUS is a compilation album featuring a who's who list of the best and world-renowned guitarists on the planet backed by his core band featuring Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder) on bass, Kelly Keeling (T.S.O., M.S.G) on vocals / keys / rhythm guitar, and Appice on drums.Originally released as two separate albums in 1995 & 1997 featuring Brian May (Queen), Slash (Guns N Roses), Neal Schon (Journey), Vivian Campbell (Def Leppard) Dweezil Zappa, Mick Mars (Motley Crue), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy) and many more! This new re-mastered album combines both releases as one complete version for the first time. It also features 5 brand new songs with Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Pat Travers, John Norum, and top Japanese guitarists RaiZi and Char.“The Guitar Zeus project was an amazing experience that has never been done before by a drummer, especially with so much talent on one album!” – Carmine AppiceSource CarmineAppice.netThis episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Rock Profiles adapted for podcast. Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo.
