When you get right down to it, what we admire most about this month's podcast guest, Dave Wiens, is his simple but deep passion for trails. Trails and trailwork connect just about everyone who likes outdoor recreation, from climbers to hikers to mountain bikers. Speaking of mountain biking, Wiens is also the executive director of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) and founder of Gunnison, Colorado-based local advocacy group Gunnison Trails. Dave recognizes the importance and benefits of having access to trails for all recreational enthusiasts. Dave and our host, Peter, get into Dave's early days with Gunnison Trails and his current work with IMBA. They discuss IMBA's aspiration to provide equitable access to trails through its “Close to Home” initiative and its support for the “Trails are Common Ground” initiative. Dave is a great storyteller, and his intimate knowledge of trail-based recreation provides many learning opportunities not just for climbers, but anyone who values access to trails. 4:37 - Dave's intro & the Gunnison Valley 7:16 - Gunnison Trails & Hartman Rocks 17:01 - Gunnison Trails' early projects 27:40 - Mountain biking & wildlife 31:41 - “System” trails 38:12 - IMBA & more local advocacy 45:38 - Dave's start at IMBA 53:17 - IMBA's mission 58:04 - IMBA bringing trail access “close to home” 1:06:37 - “Building” a climbing community 1:11:21 - Trails for Common Ground 1:23:54 - Climbers & Trails for Common Ground 1:26:06 - LCOs and IMBA's local chapters IMBA's website: https://www.imba.com/ IMBA's Instagram: @imba_us IMBA's “Close to Home” Initiative: https://www.imba.com/our-focus Gunnison Trails website: https://gunnisontrails.org/ Gunnison Trails Instagram: @gunnisontrails Trails Are Common Ground: https://trailsarecommonground.org/ Outdoor Alliance: https://www.outdooralliance.org/

Grit, Guts and Determination: The Leadville Race Series Podcast
Welcome to this episode of Grit, Guts and Determination, The Leadville Race Series Podcast, a leading authority on all things Leadville. Host Cole Chlouber takes us on a story-telling journey of the 38 year rich history of this race. Listen in as they provide tips, tricks, and stories from the Leadville members. In today's episode we meet six consecutive time Leadville Trail 100 mountain biking champion Dave Wiens. As the conversation begins, Dave tells the story of how Leadville found him. Growing up in suburban Denver, his family often spent recreational time in Twin Lakes near Leadville. Dave's first mountain bike race in Leadville was just his 4th ever race. Over the years, Dave has never lost the drive to compete. His wife, Susan, is a 1996 mountain biking bronze medalist and stands alongside Dave in the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame. Then, Dave tells the story of Gunnison Trails, the hiking, running and mountain biking nonprofit he founded in 2006. It involves trail maintenance, trail stewardship, education and development at Gunnison Valley. While thinking about ways to fund the organization, Dave was approached to help develop the Sage Burner Trail Race. The Race is 100% owned and operated by Gunnison Trails and fully funds the organization. He also discusses Pennies For Trails, a fundraiser for Gunnison Trails made possible by a handful of local businesses. Dave is now the Director at IMBA, the International Mountain Bicycling Association. IMBA is focused on providing great mountain biking trails for more people in more places across the country and even globally. They are largely focused on towns who have lost major former extraction industries, such as mining, and transforming them into recreation areas. Dirt industries, such as trails and mountain biking, are incredibly important to the health and wellness of communities and can contribute to local economies. Next, Dave discusses his 6-time Leadville Trail mountain biking championship, a feat that is unlikely to be matched any time soon. In late 2006, he committed to the mountain biking race at Leadville. According to Dave, the Leadville trail is so special because it offers every kind of terrain along its course. Once he discovered he may be competing alongside pros such as Lance Armstrong, Dave created a whole new training regimen for himself. Aside from being a competitor, Dave has a history of volunteering, helping races, supporting the Leadville Legacy Foundation and has stuck alongside the family during their darkest and brightest times. Leadville is really one huge family, which Dave said he felt from day one. Knowing the roots and history of Leadville from long before the race began is another element in Dave's connection and appreciation of the town. Thanks for joining! Dave has been mountain biking since the mid-1980s and has ridden and raced his bike on trails all over the world. He has been involved in trial advocacy from the beginning and was the founder and executive director of Gunnison Trails, and race director for the Gunnison Growler. A member of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, Dave also created and leads the Mountain Sports program at Western State Colorado University. He joined the IMBA board of directors in 2016 as its chairman and was named IMBA's executive director in spring 2017. Dave chats here with Travis and Mace about a range of topics related to mountain biking, adventure racing, raising kids, Colorado, and the outdoors.
Tim Kugler grew up in Northern Virginia and developed a love for mountains and mountainbiking in college there. After some time in California and elsewhere, a roadtrip led Tim to Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley. Tim furthered his education here at Western State Colorado University, with a Master's degree, and landed what many would consider a dream job as executive director of Gunnison Trails. Gunnison Trails is the Gunnison equivalent of the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association, so their mission is to maintain and build new trails in the Gunnison area, especially at Hartman Rocks. In the summer of 2018, Gunnison Trails also started breaking ground on new trails in the Signal Peak area just Northeast of the college. If you want to know more about Tim's story, the process of getting new trails approved for the Signal Peak area, and mountain biking in the Gunnison area in general, this is the episode for you. Dave Wiens is known by many of you for his six consecutive wins in the Leadville Trail 100 MTB mountain bike race, between 2003 and 2008, where he even bested Tour de France riders Floyd Landis and Lance Armstrong. But even before that Dave was inducted to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2000 after he helped define professional mountain bike racing in the late 1900’s! Today, Dave is focusing his efforts on mountain bike trail advocacy, something he has always been passionate about, as the new Executive Director of IMBA the International Mountain Bike Association. Previous to working for IMBA Dave was also the founder and executive director of Gunnison Trails, and race director for the Gunnison Growler. I had a great time at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic hearing why mountain bikes matter to Dave and I hope you do too! This interview was recorded Live from the Buddy Pegs Media booth at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. We built this interview series from the title of our newest children’s picture book Taking The Lead that follows our animal characters along a journey to open a local bike shop and inspire their town to ride. We hope you enjoy these personal stories from bike industry executives, non-profit leaders, pro athletes, and families just like yours who are celebrating kids on bikes and inspiring families to get off the couch... and out for a ride. --- Purchase our books, and download the World of Buddy Pegs podcast so you can share the love of bicycling with the kids in your life. Visit your local bike shop, or visit us at BuddyPegs.com. Remember it’s the little moments that create big memories.
“At the end of a hard work I head out and ride for two hours let all of the stressed of the day melt away.” - David Wiens Are you a mountain biker? We used to think that question didn’t need to be asked, because if you were, you knew it. But mountain biking is unique (in many ways) in that there’s access in so many regions and communities for so many levels of riders. The question ‘are you a mountain biker’ really needs to be rolled out to a far larger group of people. Verde works across many markets within outdoor active lifestyle. The non-profits in trail, for example, have six-figure memberships. IMBA has stayed the same size for many years – around 40,000 people. The organization knows that there are many, many more riders out there, they just need to discover IMBA and sign up. That’s partially the purpose of this episode of the Take Me Outdoors podcast. There are other purposes behind it too – but bolstering the numbers of mountain bikers in the national advocacy, access and educational conversation IS THE MOST important. If ever there was a time for us to be heard and taken seriously, it is NOW. Here we are, mid-year, during one of the craziest years in conservation, government regulation, outdoor sports and recreation, and frankly, in business. The Trump Administration and the way we engage with and discover trail sports like mountain biking is changing – and fast. This change is affecting access. It’s also affecting how we come together as a passionate ‘user group’ united by the love of a ribbon of single track weaving through high-desert sagebrush or desert or forest. Enter the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). This non-profit, headquartered in Boulder, Colo., is turning 30 next year. And, with that pivotal anniversary and the precipitous changes in participation, variation of trail users and the public lands landscape – access to great places to ride has never been in more of a precarious position. That’s why today’s episode of the Take Me Outdoors podcast is a super important one. Dave Wiens joins us today. Dave is the Executive Director of IMBA and we couldn’t be more fortunate to have one of us at the helm of our organization at such a cruxy time. He’s now leading IMBA from an incredible background. Dave founded and led Gunnison Trails, and launched the Gunnison, Colo., Growler, an iconic mountain bike race that takes place over Memorial Day weekend. He’s also a founder of the Outdoor Sports program at Western States Colorado University (also in Gunnison). And, as an aside, he’s an inductee of the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame. Credentials aside, Dave embodies what it means to be passionate about living for, and loving, a trail sport. “Mountain biking has given me everything that’s important to me in life,” Wiens said. Dave’s here to further mountain biking internationally. He’s open minded. He listens. And? He shows up and implements! If you love mountain biking, or know someone who does, please share this episode with them and also, send them to IMBA.com. If ever there was a time for us to unite, it’s now. Mountain bikers need to have their voice heard as new policy and approaches to access are developing under this new presidential administration. Thanks for listening! Bulletpoints IMBA tries to bring trails and biking opportunities to places it doesn’t exist right now. The Growler has started making events for kids. 131 kids registered for The Growler this year. There’s a lot of next generation kids interested in mountain biking. There’s still a lot of uncertainty for these agencies. Mountain bikers are fast, quiet, and can share the mountain with others. There are more places designated for mountain biking only. Trails are becoming more crowded. Mountain bikers need to ride responsibly to keep everyone else on the mountain happy. Parent’s have more control issues and safety issues today. Tails always rise to the top of amenities desired by communities. There’s a growing interest in high school mountain bike racing. Bikes are finally starting to properly develop for children. Getting out to trails is a great way to clear the mind and change your life. There are epic trails sprinkled around the country. Today mountain bikers have become connoisseurs of trails. IMBA has always have around 40,000 members. More members would help the cause to develop and protect new trails. There’s a large number of mountain bikers that don’t consider themselves mountain bikers. The portal is open to mountain biking. Links IMBA’s Website Gunnison Trails
