We uncover the big news about SORBA breaking away from IMBA with Dan the Man! He brings a really cool fresh perspective to SORBA with his business and financial background, non profit experience and casual MTB'er. Being what he phrased as somewhat of an outsider of the industry he really looked at things in a different way to help pave the way for this big move. It was fun to get to know the guy behind SORBA but also him as a person. Got to know him originally as a fan of the podcast and him buying some merch from me near the trails. Was really cool to have him on and hope you enjoy! https://sorba.org/ https://www.instagram.com/popinnorthga/

Nick Bennette is the Executive Director of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association, a position he's held for a little over two years. The group recently put together a 5-year Strategic Plan to "ensure the sustainability of mountain biking in Vermont and thoughtfully promote exceptional riding experiences for all through advocacy, education, and community-driven stewardship." How did your experience as a consultant help you craft the VMBA 5-year Strategic Plan? Vermont was an early adopter of a state advocacy model apart from IMBA. How has the VMBA Chapter model evolved since it was first launched? How does Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion fit with trail advocacy? Aside from being the right thing to do, how does it benefit the MTB community? Is e-bike access a hot topic in Vermont? Do you think it's been framed properly in the past? How did VMBA get to 10,000 dues paying members? Is advocating for trails easier today than it has been in the past? Are there additional considerations involved when public trails are located on private property? Is relying on volunteers to help build and maintain trails viable in a state like Vermont where so many trail users live out of state? What's so great about mountain biking on the east coast of the US? Why is there a perception that the trails are better out west? Learn more about the Vermont Mountain Bike Association at vmba.org and view their strategic plan here. Photo credit: Mark Clement. Welcome to Risky Business, a limited series in partnership with Trenchcoat Advisors, a risk advisory firm. In an unpredictable, complex, and chaotic world, the business risks are ever-present. To help navigate the challenges ahead, this series delves into the intersection of business and national security — from influence operations and sabotage to hostage diplomacy and investment security, we're brining exclusive conversations with leading experts to better understand and anticipate risk!In episode three, The Burn Bag's A'ndre Gonawela and Trenchcoat's Holden Triplett speak to David S. Lee about what he terms "the new national security economy." David discusses the framework he outlines in his recent Harvard Business Review article, and how companies are already affected by the 'national security economy' -- where certain dependencies (such as foreign production) can be a national security risk. David also talks about how U.S.-China competition has driven national security concerns further, and commentates on whether companies are willful participants or victims of these circumstances. We discuss how companies are responding, whether through the creation of risk intelligence units or through having Chief National Security Officers as part of their senior leadership team.David S. Lee is an award-winning teacher that is active broadly in the areas of ethics, fintech, leadership, law, and corporate governance. He teaches in the undergraduate, executive education, MBA, and other taught postgraduate degree programs, including the IMBA with Fudan University, and the Executive MBA-Global Asia offered with Columbia Business School and London Business School. David is a co-author of the first Asia focused business ethics textbook, Business Ethics: Ethical Decision Making and Cases, An Asia Edition (Cengage Learning Asia, 2019). His forthcomiong book is entitled A Perilous Moment: Navigating the New National Security Economy.

Featuring: Ashley Korenblat is a founding Managing Director for Public Land Solutions, a non-profit recreation economy consultant that works from the bottom up directly with communities transitioning away from fossil fuel extraction, and from the top down, on public land legislation and policies that affect this transition, such as oil and gas leasing and land management planning. Ashley's involvement with public land began when she served as President of Merlin Metalworks, a bicycle manufacturing company in Cambridge, MA. During that time she became chair of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) and worked with the organization to establish MOUs with federal, state, and local land managers. Ashley has spent the last 15 years at Western Spirit Cycling, an outfitter based in Moab, Utah who runs multi-day trips throughout the US, and is one of the largest holders of recreational permits on the public lands system. Ashley was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2003. She was appointed to the Utah BLM Resource Advisory Council for two terms, as well as the Outdoor Recreation Economic Ecosystem Taskforce created by Utah Governor Jon Huntsman. Ashley created IMBA's Public Lands Initiative and has testified before Congress on the recreation economy. She recently served on The Western Governor's Association's Get Out West Committee. Show Highlights: In this episode of Channel Mastery, Kristin is joined by Ashley Korenblat, Managing Director for Public Land Solutions, to talk about how business leaders can support climate change solutions within their organizations. While there are many ways that business leaders can help combat climate change, Ashley explains how supporting public lands and informing policy around public lands is essential for the outdoor industry and its consumers. Kristin and Ashley also speak to the recent passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, supply chain implications, public land solutions, oil and gas land + energy policy, and what you can do to support the climate through your business. Anthony Duncan is the Director of Local Programs at IMBA and is based out of Johnson City, Tennessee. The IMBA Local program is designed to support grassroots mountain bike organizations through services, education and mentorship programs. In this episode we ask Anthony: How long have you been at IMBA? What were you doing before joining? The IMBA local program was launched at the end of 2017 which represented a huge change for the organization. What was happening back then that led to the formation of Local? There are two IMBA Local support service options: Chapter services and Affiliate services. What does Affiliate services include? What kinds of services does Chapter support add? Does IMBA directly help groups advocate at the local level, or do you provide education and resources so groups can advocate for themselves instead? What are some of the biggest challenges local trail groups are facing? Have you seen an uptick in new local groups forming since the pandemic began? It seems like lately some of the groups that decided to drop their IMBA association are coming back as Local affiliates. What do you think is driving that? Do you think state-level groups like those forming in Vermont and California are a natural evolution in MTB advocacy? How do IMBA Regions fit this model? Is this a good time to be a mountain bike advocate? Are economic arguments increasingly effective in trail project approvals? What's next for IMBA Local? How many individuals belong to a SORBA club? How do you think that number compares to the number of active mountain bikers living in the southeast? How is SORBA funded? What is the relationship between SORBA and IMBA? What are some of the bigger trail projects that are currently in the works? Are there any unique challenges to trail building in the southeast? Is there much opposition to mountain bike trail access in the region? What does the current discussion around e-bike trail access look like for SORBA? What's the biggest constraint SORBA faces in carrying out and growing the mission? What's next for SORBA in 2022 and beyond?
