Therapy on the Cutting Edge
Building a Mastery Mindset: Integrating Sports Psychology and Clinical Practice

Therapy on the Cutting Edge

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2025 55:58

In this episode, Jeff Greenwald—world champion tennis player, licensed therapist, and sports psychology consultant—offers a rare glimpse into the intersection of clinical therapy and high-performance coaching. Jeff highlights how anxiety has become the predominant struggle both inside and outside of sport, often crippling athletes and families alike. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, he explains how his dual training allows him to work not only on performance enhancement but also on the deeper roots of anxiety, perfectionism, and family dynamics that shape an athlete's experience. He shares how he integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and Somatic Psychotherapy, tailoring each to the unique needs of athletes. Jeff clarifies how sports psychology typically focuses on attention control, motivation, and performance skills, while clinical practice digs into family systems, emotional regulation, and underlying anxiety. Listeners will also hear about Jeff's practical frameworks, including the four dimensions of focus (narrow/broad, internal/external) and his “remote control” metaphor from The Mental Edge for Young Athletes. These models help young athletes understand they have multiple tools at their disposal—but it's their responsibility to choose and apply them in the heat of competition. A major theme of the conversation is Jeff's emphasis on the “permission to miss.” With statistics showing that 70% of kids quit sports by age 16, Jeff underscores the importance of helping athletes reframe mistakes, embrace imperfection, and cultivate a mastery mindset focused on growth and process rather than outcome. Over time, athletes learn to anchor their confidence in the skills they can control—their routines, effort, and perspective—rather than in outcomes they can't. This framework not only reduces anxiety but also fosters resilience, freedom, and joy in sport. He also shares how parents can best support their children—not by rushing in to fix, but by validating their experiences and normalizing their anxiety. As a competitive athlete himself, and still competing internationally, Jeff has demonstrated how you can transform from a tentative, perfectionistic mindset to a full realization of your ability through the mastery mindset, which also catapulted him to world No. 1 in his age group. He shares how this breakthrough was instrumental to his work and how grateful he is to be in a position to help the thousands of athletes he has worked with over the past 27 years. Jeff Greenwald, MFT, is a world champion athlete, licensed psychotherapist, best-selling author, and one of the world's leading mental coaches for athletes. With over 25 years of experience helping youth, college, and professional competitors thrive under pressure, Jeff brings a rare blend of elite performance insight and clinical expertise to his work. He is the author of the international bestseller The Best Tennis of Your Life, which has sold over 80,000 copies worldwide, and the new book The Mental Edge for Young Athletes—a groundbreaking guide for building confidence, emotional resilience, and a stronger mindset in sports and life. Jeff has worked with athletes across every major sport and consulted for national teams, Fortune 500 leaders, top junior academies, and competitive athletes at all levels of sport. He is a two-time ITF World Champion and was inducted into the Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame in 2019 for his contribution in the field of sports psychology and success as a world-ranked tennis player. Through his writing, coaching, and speaking, Jeff empowers athletes and their families to navigate the mental game with clarity, courage, and lasting confidence.

Host Doug Stephan and Dr. Ken Kronhaus of Lake Cardiology (352-735-1400) cover a number of topics affecting our health. First up, Doug and Dr. Ken discuss the biggest news stories in the medical world, starting with a targeted itch-relief for the various types of bee/wasp/hornet stings, raising the question of what is in bee/hornet/wasp venom that causes pain, itching, as well as the more severe allergic reactions that can lead to anaphylaxis. Next up, new research linking prenatal exposure to acetaminophen (like in Tylenol) with Autism and ADHD and why some medical professionals are pushing back. Then, Doug and Dr. Ken continue the pain-reliever conversation and the benefits of routinely taking low-dose Aspirin, but the importance that a routine like this should be done under a doctor's supervision as there can be adverse effects if you are not someone that needs to be taking low-dose Aspirin regularly. Moving on, the focus shifts to brain injuries and how it affects young athletes, college-age and younger, with early neuron loss and CFE's. It's a finding that highlights long-term risk associated with sports, like football and soccer, leading to new guidelines for player safety and concussion protocols. More warnings on pregnancy and cannabis use, as use has climbed due to wider legalization and social acceptance, with many turning to marijuana to curb morning sickness and pregnancy pain symptoms. Lastly, new research explains a phenomenon how exercise suppresses appetite through a previously-unknown molecular pathway, questioning why bugs bite us, and the latest on the screwworm.  Website: GoodDayHealthrShow.com Social Media: @GoodDayNetworks

Episode 36 - Mary Lesser - Sports Nutrition and Considerations for the Young Athlete with GI DisordersIn this episode of Nutrition Pearls: the Podcast, co-hosts Nikki Misner and Jen Smith speak with Mary Lesser PhD, RD, dietitian on the topic of Sports Nutrition.  Originally a Northern California native, Mary is currently an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Nutrition and Metabolic Biology Department at the University of California, Berkeley as well as a Pediatric Sports Nutrition Dietitian at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. Nutrition is and has been her major field of study for the past twenty+ years! The field has allowed her to pursue her passion for research, education, as well as practicing in the clinical setting. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at UC Davis in Clinical Nutrition with a minor in Human Development and then went on to complete her Master of Science Degree in Nutrition at Tufts University in Boston, MA. While working on her Masters, she completed her Dietetic Internship at Tufts Medical Center and is currently a Registered Dietitian. She then returned to UC Davis to complete her PhD in Nutritional Biology, with an emphasis in Developmental Nutrition and then moved down to the Bay Area to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute.Mary chose Nutrition because she has always felt that following a healthy lifestyle and eating pattern are very important and has always incorporated (as well as encouraged) this philosophy into her own life as well as the life of others. She is one who likes to have a little variety in her life so as of right now, her current (and future!) plans include a career that involves research, clinical work, teaching, and translating science into community outreach + policy/advocacy efforts. In research, she is interested in investigating the nutrition environment during early development (pregnancy, lactation, early childhood) to observe (if any) persistent developmental effects (of the fetus, neonate, child) that may increase or decrease chronic disease risk later in life. And in practice, Mary enjoys working with young athletes on their Sports Nutrition needs and goals.Nutrition Pearls is supported by an educational grant from Mead Johnson Nutrition.Resources:www.ucsfbenioffchildrens.org/-/media/project/ucsf/ucsf-bch/pdf/sports-nutrition-2016-meals-snacks.pdf?rev=177fc88db39d4ef096bc3760a73c5a8eProduced by: Corey IrwinNASPGHAN - Council for Pediatric Nutrition Professionalscpnp@naspghan.org

Today's guest is Michael Zweifel. Michael is the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach at UW–La Crosse, now in his fourth season with the program. He previously founded Building Better Athletes (BBA Performance) in Dubuque, Iowa, training athletes from youth to pro levels. Michael also coached at Clarke College and the University of Dubuque. A former record-setting wide receiver, he won the 2011 Gagliardi Trophy and still holds the NCAA all-divisions career receptions record (463). In athletic development, the “5 S's of performance”: Strength, Speed, Stamina, Suppleness, and Skill are often brought up. What tends to be the case is that those 5 elements are weighted in that order, with skill mentioned, but rarely or ever studied in how to improve it. On today's show, Michael discusses his own creative approach to skill development in American football players with an emphasis on building artistry and adaptability in his players. He speaks on the nature of constraint-based coaching that helps athletes improve their arsenal of movements on the field, as well as their decision-making skills amid chaos. We also touch on the crossover between basketball and football, and ultimately, the art of long-term development of skill in one's sport and as an athlete in general. College athletes can handle more volume and complexity, but the fundamentals still matter. What to try: Prioritize clean movement and buy-in over complexity in high school settings. Introduce more autonomy and load management with college athletes. Don't assume physical maturity—meet athletes where they are. Balancing Strength and Movement Skill in Team Settings – [5:03] It's not just about chasing strength numbers. There's value in seeing how strength integrates into movement, especially in large team environments. What to try: Cycle in movement tasks—like crawling, balancing, or landing—in warmups and finishers. Use strength work to support athletic expression, not just output. Keep the athlete's sport in mind—strength is a tool, not the goal. Developing the Skill of Lifting in Young Athletes – [11:09] Lifting isn't just strength—it's a skill. For youth athletes, you're teaching how to move with awareness under load. What to try: Start with basic isometrics and bodyweight patterns to teach control. Add load only when position and rhythm are reliable. Use slow eccentrics and pauses to reinforce stability. Rethinking Readiness: Performance vs. Output – [15:34] Readiness isn't just about lifting heavier or running faster—it's about how an athlete moves and feels. Output is one piece, not the whole picture. What to try: Include subjective readiness check-ins before training. Look for signs of fluidity, control,

Hopley also recounted his journey from being a player to a coach, detailing his experiences and the transition to focusing on player development.14:33 Coaching Philosophy and Player DevelopmentMark Hopley explained that coaches must foster an environment that encourages young athletes to enjoy their training sessions, which are limited to an hour and a half each week. He emphasized the importance of education for young athletes, stating that rugby programs are designed to support their academic commitments.23:39 -Coaching Philosophy and Skill Development in RugbyMichael Wright and Mark Hopley explore the challenges of coaching a more chaotic style of play to older players who may be accustomed to structured approaches. He believes that a simpler, principle-based approach can enhance player enjoyment and performance.31:45 -Coaching Development and Player Skill EnhancementMark highlights the necessity of ensuring players have ample opportunities to touch the ball during training to improve their skills. This episode is a rebroadcast of episode #25 of The Crafted Conversation with Marcus Sharrad. Enjoy. ---In this expansive conversation, Dr Craig Harrison invites us to rethink the purpose and practice of youth development. It's not about designing perfect athletes, but about crafting safe, playful, expressive environments where young people can explore who they are, not just what they can do.Marcus and Craig explore the ecological complexity of performance, the importance of letting go of control, and the centrality of coaching the person before the plan. From storytelling and psychological safety to mentorship and emotional literacy, this episode is a masterclass in compassionate, curious leadership.Key Concepts:Environments shape behaviour – Coaching doesn't happen in a vacuum. We must understand the child's world, not just their session.Performance is personal – Narrative identity, not outcome identity, should guide the athlete journey.Belonging matters as much as skill – Every athlete needs to feel safe to explore, question, and grow.Mentorship is not a programme — it's a culture – It lives in every conversation, check-in, and reflective pause.Freedom and structure are not opposites – The best coaching holds both gently, in balance.Reflection over reaction – True development invites athletes to think, not just comply.---Sign up for Craig's newsletter (Beyond the Game) at http://www.drcraigharrison.com/Get Craig to speak at your club or school here.  Connect with Craig:Instagram: instagram.com/drcraigharrison/Facebook: facebook.com/drcraigharrisonTwitter: twitter.com/drcraigharrisonSupport the showSupport the show
