[00:03:12] My very first coaching job, I was head coach of a U14 club team.[00:03:27] There was a book written about your team.[00:05:14] It's called the beautiful game, 16 girls and the season that changed everything.[00:05:54] I have tried to exit coaching many times.[00:06:10] My mentors, my heroes were male coaches typically at that time, and we're talking 24 years ago, were very driven, very dedicated, very disciplined coaches.[00:07:11] I was out of the game. I ended up moving home and I was like, I'm not coaching.[00:08:32] I think it was like two months later I got a call, Hey, you're in the top five.[00:09:52] I've always suffered from a little bit of insecurity.[00:10:28] Just remember that you were chosen, for yourself… So, remember to be who you are. And remember that was good enough.[00:11:24] The things that I still needed to learn. [00:12:40] When you do everything yourself, you create the effect that you don't want, which is everybody relies on you for the final say.[00:13:28] I remember I was yelling at my team and one of my players turned to me in the middle of a play, and she said, what do I do now? And I was so ashamed of that moment.[00:14:06] You need to trust them and let them fail sometimes.[00:16:03] Tall trees catch high wind. [00:17:03] But what advice would you give to people that are in your situation? Young females, trying to break into a male dominated profession that are successful or not successful, but how do you inoculate yourself against some of the criticisms that are unfounded, but really eat away at your self-confidence and as you describe it, your insecurity and need to prove yourself at every level?[00:18:22] Outside of your team, I think it's having a support system.[00:19:59] The world has changed so much…we have a lot of athletes that are being inundated constantly is this information overload and what gets the most attention is negativity.[00:21:44] No two teams are run the same, so every team has run differently, but my standards remain.[00:23:52] But now, the individual meetings very often are an invitation for a player to speak on things that we may not know about. So, we provide this open space. We don't always fill it with our own air.[00:24:33] We do a captain's corner and our former captains come and speak on leadership and all of our captains so far have said you can't lead each player on the team the same way.[00:26:34] I think children want discipline, but I also think athletic teams want it.[00:26:51] If you didn't have to sacrifice anything, anybody could be on your team.[00:28:24] So we define things. So, we have a definition of excellence and so when I say we need to be excellent, we can point back to what that is…It starts with accountability, maturity, poise.[00:29:16] Accountability is having personal ownership.[00:29:40] Maturity is having emotional self-control.[00:30:01] And poise means emotional piece.[00:31:51] Leadership has been a cultural tradition in this program. So, we develop leadership. We don't just bring players in and go, Oh, she's a natural leader, no, we develop it by appropriate administration of responsibility.[00:32:36] When a leader speaks, whether it's via text in a training on a game, whether it's, a coach speaking and then immediately another person affirms the message.[00:34:33] And what it said is that, in these major companies, in the US women's voices were being lost.[00:36:13] Women are so afraid to back other women, like why are we competing with each other? We should be lifting and affirming.[00:36:31] Leadership's number one priority is harmony. So our goal in council is to create a harmonious team culture, not a right team culture, not a correcting culture, but a harmonious team culture.[00:37:08] Act of affirmation.[00:39:27] I have seen the culture of coaching, with young women and young women who walk into environments without the right mentorship, just get the passion, the flame gets snuffed out, really talented players, really talented leaders.[00:40:20] I would just encourage women to stop being so apologetic for being competitive.[00:42:58] We have to stop focusing on competition and focus on whether or not you're a good teammate, because you can be highly competitive, want to win every game, want to be the best at every training and not emotionally step on people.[00:44:27] But we don't do that in band. You have first flute or first piano. So why can we have everybody play piano? So, we don't do it in other areas. We don't do it in an art competition. Who gets the blue ribbon? First place in art. You have first flute, you have to audition for dance recitals, but somehow when it comes to sport, we want to neutralize everybody.[00:46:08] And we have a ban on saying, I'm sorry, you are not allowed to say, I'm sorry, just don't do it, because you're taking ownership of something you didn't even mean.[00:46:33] "I'm sorry about that. I went too far." That's a different thing. But sorry is what we teach everybody to neutralize the moment, even though there was no intention to harm.[00:50:15] Friend versus teammate?

Few college coaches can match Becky Burleigh’s ability to bring a team ready to challenge for each season’s conference and national titles on such a consistent basis. There is no question that Burleigh stunned the soccer community when the Florida program she started in 1995 claimed the 1998 NCAA crown in just its fourth season of play. But focusing on that obvious achievement doesn't give due credit to the job Burleigh does year-in and year-out as a tactician of the sport, developing players and promoting the sport at local, state and national levels. Those early successes have evolved into the Gator soccer team being a regular among the nation’s ranked teams. Over the course of the program’s 23 years, Florida has: 21 NCAA Championships’ berths (1996-2001; 2003-2017) Two NCAA College Cup appearances (1998, 2001), winning NCAA title in 1998 14 SEC team titles (1996-2001; 2006-2010; 2012-13, 2015) 12 SEC Tournament titles (1996-01; 2004; 2007, 2010, 2012, 2015-16) Two Special Offers for my listeners: Go to https://www.patreon.com/onthetouchline and for $10.00 per month you can join a private soccer group for supporters of this show.
