AJ and guest host Aidan Edgecomb review the opening week of the NRL's third pre-season challenge. They look at the Warriors run-on side and the performance of Luke Metcalf as well as Sam Healey's rise to potentially become the 14 for the trip to Vegas. Also the boys praise Demitric Vaimauga's performance off the bench as the Warriors look for impact off the bench. The Sharks discussion focuses on their young guns as well as Tom Hazelton and the wing battle. The second game was more of a focus on youth as Canberra and Penrith answered little questions about their make up for Vegas. Young gun hooker Owen Pattie showed what he was worth while Chevy Stewart and Albert Hopoate impressed outwide. For Penrith, we debate the halves dilemna if Cleary gets hurt as well as debate Mav Geyer's future. To wrap up, we address the Broncos win over QLD Cup side Burleigh and debate whether Jock Madden is the next man up in the halves if there is any other problem areas for the Broncos halves in 2025.
This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief heads deep into the heart of Houston, Texas, to shine a spotlight on a remarkable group reshaping the whiskey world: The Women's Whiskey Society. He sits down with Founder Summer Sanford and member Stephanie Burleigh to uncover their inspiring mission to empower, educate, and celebrate women in the dynamic and complex realm of whiskey. Since its founding in 2022, The Women's Whiskey Society has become a force to be reckoned with, hosting over 30 events annually, all at an approachable cost. From distillery tours to exclusive barrel picks, these passionate women are embracing every facet of the whiskey experience and making it accessible to all. The episode begins with the trio savoring High West Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Big Chief paints a vivid picture of its rich, earthy character, with well-balanced flavors of candy corn, honey nougat, and sweet cornbread biscuits—a sip that feels like home. They follow it up with High West Double Rye, a bold, spice-forward pour with notes of menthol, mint, eucalyptus, herbal tea, wildflower honey, and allspice. Big Chief even picks out a playful note of gummy bears, proving his palate doesn't miss a thing. As they dive into the second half, the ladies introduce Big Chief to High West Rendezvous Rye, a masterpiece of complexity. It bursts with flavors of raspberry jalapeño jelly on toasted brown bread, clove-infused orange slices, vanilla-poached dates, homemade applesauce with cinnamon sticks, and fried dough dusted in powdered sugar. Every sip reveals something new—this whiskey is a sensory journey. The lineup continues with High West Campfire, a bold and smoky blend with notes of vanilla, salted caramel, toasted brioche, red berry compote, chai spices, orange zest, cedar, and pipe tobacco. The complexity of this pour evokes the feeling of sitting around a campfire, wrapped in a warm, smoky embrace. To close out the show, Stephanie surprises everyone with a bottle of High West A Midwinter Night's Dram—a rye whiskey like no other. Big Chief is floored by its decadent profile of rye toast with marmalade, cherry, dried fruit, herbs, tobacco, and toasted oak. It's a symphony of flavors and the perfect note to end on. This episode is a toast to the women who are redefining the whiskey community, proving that this spirit is for everyone. Cheers to The Women's Whiskey Society and their dedication to spreading knowledge, passion, and love for whiskey. Here's to another unforgettable adventure on The Whiskey Trip!

In this episode I meet Dr Mia Burleigh at the University of the West of Scotland in Blantyre, Glasgow, to undertake some physiology testing. I had Lactate Threshold and VO2max testing done and we discuss the results. Dr Burleigh is a Senior Lecturer and Laboratory Director at the university's Sport and Physical Activity Research Institute, which is the only BASES accredited lab in Scotland (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences). First I undertook Lactate Threshold testing, which involved running for 4 minute blocks at increasing speed increments, with a fingerprick lactate blood test every 4 minutes. This allowed calculation of Lactate Threshold and Lactate Turnpoint. Next I donned a breathing mask and ran to failure at a set speed with gradient increasing by 1% every minute, to test maximum oxygen delivery, and calculate VO2max. This was a much tougher test!Lab details: https://shop.uws.ac.uk/product-catalogue/schools/school-of-health-and-life-science-hls/maximal-exercise-testIf you want to buy me a cuppa to help support the podcast, thank you and please do at: https://ko-fi.com/finlaywild

Alabaman and Floridian, Bill Conner, started his career making leather sandals on the gold coast of Australia in the early 70s. At some point, he pivoted to hats. "Why make hats instead of sandals? Because you only have to make one." Paul Hogan supercharged demand for his craftsmanship unintentionally, or at least the costume designer on Crocodile Dundee did, when the movie came out. European demand surged when Matt Nicholson repped his skills to Herod's and Galleries Lafayette. He retired after 50 years, surfing Broken Head, wearing his white helmet (not a BC model). At times early on, he surfed from Byron to Burleigh by himself for years, ahead of the crowd. Enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Maureen Callahan's book "Ask Not: The Kennedy's and the Women They Destroyed" has been near the top of the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list since its publication in early July. In a review of the Callahan book by Nina Burleigh in the Washington Post, Burleigh writes: "She identifies the wellspring of misogyny in Irish Catholic patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. in Boston during the Gilded Age, and traces it anecdote by anecdote down through JFK, RFK and Teddy, and the litter of boomer generation men — boys hatched by three Kennedy wives Callahan depicts as humiliated breeders and political props, driven to madness and alcoholism." I had the great joy to do my first ever live edition of Sticky Notes last month with the Aalborg Symphony in Denmark. For this concert, I chose a piece that is extremely close to my heart, Dvorak's New World Symphony. The story of the New World Symphony is a fascinating one. The symphony was the result of an extraordinary series of events, with Dvorak coming to America in 1892, meeting the great singer Harry Burleigh, and falling in love with a totally new, to him, genre of music: Black American and Native American folk music. Listening to Burleigh and other voices around America, Dvorak had discovered a new “American” sound for his music, and even though he would end up staying in the US for just three years, in that time he composed two of his most popular pieces, the American String Quartet, and the New World Symphony But of course, the New World Symphony isn't really an American piece. It is a piece written in America by a Czech composer, which means it embodies traits from both sides of the Atlantic. Moments of Black American influence elide into Czech Slavonic Dances and back again with incredible ease. All along the way, Dvorak infuses his highly traditional symphonic style with this "American" sound, a sound that enraptured the public from the very first time they heard it, and remains both incredibly popular and incredibly moving, today. Join myself and the Aalborg Symphony for this exploration of the symphony, followed by a complete performance. I'm extremely grateful to the Danish Radio for allowing me to use this performance for the show.
