Manufacturing is a key industry that can revitalize communities, but what about in more rural locations? How do smaller communities compete with the big cities for talent, innovation, investment and growth? We head to Northeast Nebraska for this episode to speak with Angie Stenger, the Executive Director of Northeast Nebraska Growing Together – an initiative to transform the regional economy and population growth. From scholarship programs to a new innovation hub and the creation of a vibrant downtown scene, Norfolk is redefining what it means to live and work in a rural community. Angie shares insights on their unique "Growing Together Scholarship," which partners with Wayne State College to offer students not just education, but also housing and a full year of internship experience with local businesses. This not only provides valuable skills to students but also allows companies to "test drive" potential employees. But it's not all work and no play in Norfolk. The city has invested in quality-of-life improvements that rival big city amenities, including a Whitewater Park for river surfing, an amphitheater for festivals, and a thriving arts scene. The goal? To make Northeast Nebraska a magnet for young professionals and families. In this episode, find out:Angie shares some backstory on the resurgence of downtown Norfolk The purpose of Northeast Nebraska Growing Together and how it's helping to “repopulate Northeast Nebraska” How the local community is investing in facilities including attractions, art, and local facilities to attract familiesAngie explains how their partnership with Wayne State College enabled them to build a great scholarship program Why Northeast Nebraska is leading the way with its Growing Together initiativeWhat to expect from Northeast Nebraska's upcoming innovation hub How Angie's organization works closely with local businesses and manufacturers to find out what they need from talent Angie explains what manufacturing and bedrock companies mean to the region and shares examples of innovative tech and companies leading the wayRaising awareness and interest in manufacturing as a career path through the Growing Together initiativeHow Growing Together is measuring success in both the short and long-termAngie's advice to other regions that might want to adopt a similar model of collaboration Enjoying the show? Dr. Jeanne Leep – Improv Nerd Meet the brilliant author and professor, Dr. Jeanne Leep. Jeanne played improv in Grand Rapids, Michigan and went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Theatre. I had the good fortune to play with Jeanne recently and was awed by her spontaneity and joy. She went to high school with our mutual friend Jay Sukow and then went on to the University Of Michigan and Wayne State College. Her best-selling book, “Theatrical Improvisation: Short Form, Long Form, and Sketch-Based Improv” is a classic book on the history of improv and sketch comedy that gives a clear definition on this often ambiguous topic. The forward was written by Jeanne's friend, Keegan Michael Key. Her research is extensive and this is certainly a book to add to your Improv Library. Brimming with original interviews from leaders in the field such as Ron West, Charna Halpern, John Sweeny and Margaret Edwartowski, Theatrical Improvisation presents straightforward improvisational theory, history, and trends. She is a Professor of Theatre Arts at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin and her students are really fortunate to have her wisdom and humor. Visit my website where I speak to today's leading innovators of improv. My guests are improvisers and therapists from all over the world who share their stories and offer insight into the unique ways they use improv. margotescott.com/podcast/

Join me and my guests, Lauren Bailey and Patricia McNair, who bring two very different perspectives to the Foster Care system and how it relates to the unsheltered/homeless epidemic. Foster Care and homelessness affect all of us. Become part of the solution, not part of the problem. What is wrong with our current Foster Care system? Where are the disconnects and gaps? How do these gaps lead to homeless youth? Lauren is a senior at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, majoring in Human Service Counseling. Her senior research project focused on the foster care system, and in an attempt to understand why the system is failing the children of America, she has decided to continue into a Master's program where she will become an advocate to find solutions for children in the foster care system. Beginning at age three and a half, Patricia spent many years in foster care. Too many to count. The system failed her, and ultimately, she became homeless. Her first-hand experience will shed light on how children are affected if they grow up in this environment. Watch Here: https://youtu.be/VvisnH9xoYQ

Author Dave Mainelli talks about his short story book collection https://www.davemainelli.com/ (How to Be Lonely) and how the stories test the limits of the human condition and our occasionally tenuous grip on a life well lived. Mainelli also shares how his writing has bridged from the truth of his own experiences with ill health to inspire some of the challenges facing his protagonists. Dave Mainelli teaches creative writing at Wayne State College and, starting in the Fall, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. HIs short story collection, How To Be Lonely, was published by WSC Press in March of 2021. Mainelli draws from his diverse experiences in life to muse on our loneliness with a dark humor and a melancholy recipe. The stories test the limits of the human condition and Albert Camus' so called "serious problem" on whether life is worth living. His writing often delves into the American lower middle class and those living just below the veil of the American dream.
