As campuses across the country have returned to in-person education this fall, requests by faculty for accommodations have been routinely ignored or denied. So for our first episode for Season 2, we reached out to three members of the Accessible Campus Action Alliance (ACAA), an organization of disability studies scholars and activists that has called on universities to do better with their statement “Beyond High Risk,” first released back in June of 2020 and updated in July of 2021. Aimi Hamraie, Jonathan Sterne & Bess Williamson challenge the celebration of being “back to normal” and the failing accommodations systems that have put financial considerations over the safety of faculty and students. Our hosts learn that the very technologies that made teaching online possible last year arose from the needs and responses of the disabled community. But now that universities are pushing in-person instruction, administrations are refusing access to them. In the final segment, Jonathan, Bess, and Aimi discuss what it would mean to build institutions imbued with an ethic of care that recognizes our mutual vulnerability and dependency. For more information on the ACAA, read their statement and follow them on Twitter. They discuss the law's relevance in today's post ADA world, what the law means for blind and visually impaired travelers, and successes and areas of improvement regarding airline accessibility, including the ACAA Amendments Act (H.R. 1696/S.642). If you are facing accessibility barriers or believe the airline is discriminating against you based on your disability, you may file a complaint with the Department of Transportation Office of Aviation Consumer Protection: https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/file-consumer-complaint.

Holland College Hurricanes guard Logan Rempel joins host Tyler Bennett for Episode Seven in Season Three of the Four Quarters Podcast, powered by Four Quarters Media! Off the top, Bennett and Rempel start from the beginning of Rempel's collegiate career with the GPRC Wolves as a redshirt guard. After a roller coaster three seasons with the Wolves, Rempel made the cross-Canada trek to Holland College in Prince Edward Island. He then talks about the ups and downs that have come with the move across country, and how he's stayed motivated throughout. For Rempel, hitting the lowest of lows on more than one occasion forced him to question whether basketball was for him any longer, but his ability to continue pushing and his ability to motivate himself consistently is second to none. His purpose is to inspire others in life, and you could say he's done that already, and then some.

Web Twitter Facebook
