Coaching U Podcast with Coach Brendan Suhr presented by Hudl & Hudl Assist

In this episode, Coach Brendan Suhr is joined by John Bloom, author of Strength in Numbers. Bloom shares the inspiration behind his book, which features insights from 108 coaches across various sports, including head coaches, assistant coaches, and strength and conditioning specialists. He discusses the impact of his 12-question framework, inspired by Tim Ferriss's Tribe of Mentors, to uncover the philosophies, struggles, and successes of elite coaches. Bloom highlights key themes from the book, such as balancing character development with winning, handling burnout, and the importance of vulnerability and self-evaluation for coaches. His conversations with legendary figures like Anson Dorrance emphasize that building character does not have to come at the expense of winning.Coach Bloom also reflects on the role of strength and conditioning in establishing a team's culture and how his background influenced the book's broader focus on leadership and impact. He talks about the lessons learned from interviewing a diverse group of coaches and how the book serves as an encyclopedia of coaching wisdom. With practical advice for young coaches on leadership, dealing with adversity, and finding mentorship, this episode offers a comprehensive look into what it takes to succeed in coaching at any level. On November 14, 2024, we interviewed 22 time NCAA Champion Coach Anson Dorrance from University of North Carolina Women's Soccer. At the time the Tar Heels were in the midst of another winning season, and Dorrance had resigned his head coaching duties, handing the reigns to interim coach Damon Nahas, Asst. coach Tracy Leone and GK Coach Chris Ducar. As the third assistant coach, Dorrance fulfilled a role he had never done before, and 24 hours prior to us recording this podcast, we witnessed the Tar Heels become NCAA Champions for the 23rd time! In this most timely of interviews, we discuss the championship with Anson, the qualities of the new coaching staff (Nahas was named Head Coach just prior to the championship game), the importance of love in your coaching, and so much more. This is as close as it gets to conducting an hour long on field interview with a national champion! We begin with football and game one of the pre-season for YOUR Cincinnati Bengals. Beautiful night, good crowd at paycor for the bengales and the buccaneers. Joe Burrow saw action in a pre-season game for the first time in 3 years and he looked pretty sharp…..not great, although he did lead the team on a touchdown drive before sitting the rest of the game. Burrow made some nice throws, forced a couple, was helped by a bogus pass interference penalty butr the bottom line is….HES HEALTHY! Finally! For the first time since the end of the 2022 season. I'll tell you who else looked good……first round pick and starter at right tackle amarius mims. If Trent Brown can kick things into gear, Mims may be starting week one of the regular season. We will get into some of the things that caught our eyes….wjho played well, who didn't and is it too late to worry about the dLine stopping the run? Baseball, another lost weekend for the Reds……meaning they lose three games off the schedule and dodn't make a move. They'd be in last place if the wheels hadn't fallen off for the pittsburgh pirates. Cincinnati was again embarrassed by division-leading Milwaukee, They lost ⅔ over the weekend scoring a total of seven runs in the series. Not even competing with Milwaukee is a joke. Reds are 4 ½ gms out of the final wildcardc spot, so they're still alive. Problem is seven teams are ahead of them. One of those teams is st. louis. The cardinals start a three-game series tonight at gabp. Andrew abbott starts it for Cincinnati. Former Red Sonny Gray starts for the redbirds. The summer games in Paris wrapped up yesterday. The United States won the most medals with 126. China was second with 91 and great britain third with 65, one better than the french. The US and Communist Chinease tied for the most gold medals with 40. Congrats to all the athletes and their amazing commitment to excellence over so many years. One final note in sports….. You might not know the name Anson Dorrance, but you should. He retired yesterday as the womens head soccer coach at the university of north carolina. All he did was win more national championships than any other coach, men or womens in ncaa history with 21. He won 934 games, lost 88. He added another 172 wins as the tarheels mens head coach. He said he modeled his program from the very beginning after Dean Smith, the former legendary north carolina mens basketball coach.

When the US Women's National Team began winning on the international stage, much credit was given to Anson Dorrance's innovative tactical approach. He deployed a 3-4-3 to counter 4-4-2 setups most commonly utilized by other international programs. Leveraging his team's athleticism, Dorrance relied on pressing to create transitional attacking opportunities. With talents like April Heinrichs, Michelle Akers and Carin Jennings-Gabarra ready to take advantage of those chances, the USWNT had enough fire power to win the inaugural FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991. With all the attention given to the team's attacking prowess, it was easy to overlook the importance of defenders like Linda Hamilton. The 2022 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee was often given the task of marking and shutting down the oppositions best player. Her intimidating and physical style was important to the success of that 91 World Cup team, allowing that attacking talent to flourish while she solidied the last line of defense. Linda joined the show to share her memories of that team, her career and beyond. The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Anson is an American soccer coach (in the USA it is referred to as soccer not Football) who is currently the Head Coach of the Womens Team at the University of North Carolina. Under his leadership the team has won 21 of the 31 NCAA Championships. His teams have a winning record of 91%. He has been named the NCAA coach of the year on 8 occasions. In 1991 he also led the USA team to the first Womens World Cup. The USA have gone on to win the World Cup and 4 occasions and one-third of the players in those teams have come through Ansons team at North Carolina. Another notable alumna from his team is Sarina Weigman who led the UK to the Women's Euro 2022. Anson has firm and challenging philosophies that he has hones over many many years, and listenting to him made me reflect on the way I parent and lead. In this fantastic interview some of the highlights for me were: How coaching men and women the same was a mistake. And his associated learning that women are better at making moral judgements based on how people are affected, and he personally would prefer to be led by someone like that. The concept of the competitive cauldron which shapes the culture in his team, and is based on rankings for performance on a multitude of ares at training and in games. His fantastic idea that "And if you're a female, and you're competitive, you are excoriated by your own culture, like there's something wrong with you. No, there's nothing wrong with you." And How the first step on any leadership journey is learning to lead yourself, and this is where most people fail because it requires action that scares people. Coach Anson Dorrance is the Head Coach of the University of North Carolina's Women's Soccer Team. He's the only Head Coach in program history, having coached 45 seasons as the Women's Head Coach. He graduated from North Carolina, he spent his time there, he actually coached the Men's team and the Women's team when he first got there. He's won over 1000 games and he's won 22 National Championships. He has coached some of the best soccer players of all time and won a World Cup with the Women's Soccer Team. So, in women's soccer coaching history from a legacy standpoint, Coach Dorrance is the cream of the crop. He's on the Mount Rushmore of coaching in general, but especially in women's soccer. He's in the Soccer Hall of Fame, he's been named Coach of the Year seven times, the resume just goes on and on and on. It was a pleasure, it was an honor to learn from him; I hope you pull out a pad of paper and a pen and start taking notes because there are just a ton of gems throughout today's conversation.   Coach Dorrance had a number of amazing insights during our conversation.
