Catalyst, a local non-profit serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence, says it hasn't been impacted by federal funding freezes yet. However, services could be at risk if the freezes go through. Also, students and faculty gathered to protest the attendance of Homeland Security Investigations during a career fair on Chico State's campus this week, and Butte County is deciding how Proposition H funds will be spent.

Chico State protestors are gathering this week to oppose the presence of Homeland Security Investigations, an agency within ICE, at the university's career fair. Also, after more than 150 years, Collier Hardware in Chico will close at the end of March, and Butte College is breaking ground this fall on a new facility to expand its cosmetology and barbering programs.

It's been more than six months since the Park Fire swept through Butte and Tehama counties. Now, Chico State is using a nearly 8,000-acre property in the burn scar to create a prototype for sustainable wildfire recovery in California. Also, a team of Shasta High School students will see their work fly to the edge of space, and California lawmakers are working to combat federal deportation efforts. What does that mean for schools in the state?

Samuel Ayer Park in Red Bluff is used as a city-sanctioned homeless encampment. But following recent heavy rain, the park has flooded, displacing unhoused residents. The land all around is charred by fire. But here, there's a sort of miracle at work. Native milkweed has sprung up and bloomed for the second time this year. This is not something these plants, Asclepias eriocarpa, also known as Indian milkweed, are known to do.They bloomed in late spring and early summer and had already done so this year when the Park Fire roared through. But the fire seemed to happen at just the right time to coax a second flowering, one that is likely to line up with the return migration of the monarch butterflies south to overwinter in Mexico. Monarchs rely on these flowers to complete their life cycle. For researcher Don Hankins, this is a surprise delight.“We may be coming back into some knowledge here that hasn't been practiced in a long time,” said Don Hankins, a professor at Chico State, who teaches classes in geography with a focus on fire. The Shoe Fire burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is nearly 4,000 acres. Smoke from the fire has created unsafe air conditions across Shasta County. Also, the Trinity County Board of Supervisors voted to name the North Carolina town of Weaverville its sister city and is pledging aid to help the city recover from Hurricane Helene. And "The Screenprint Biennial," a New York City-based exhibition, celebrates a decade of showcasing innovative screenprinting designs at Chico State.

Also, PG&E is warning of potential power shutoffs for around 30 counties later this week to prevent wildfires, and the U.S. Department of Education awarded Chico State with an $8.5 million grant to support placing aspiring teachers in residency programs across rural Northern California.

When Rick Berens was a student at Chico State, he was arrested for selling 0.25 g of cocaine and incarcerated for five months. His book recounts his experiences in Butte County jail and Vacaville prison. He later had success writing and directing for television shows like Cheers.

Chico State's School of Education received an $8.5 million grant for a teacher residency program. Also, a local author has debuted “Forgive the Animal,” an anthology of poetry, and more areas in Bidwell Park are set to open today.

Chico city staff will be looking for direction from the city council today to draft a response to this year's Grand Jury report. Also, with Chico State's fall semester in full swing, local campaigners are reminding students how impactful their vote is in local elections. They say local municipal elections are where students will see changes in their daily lives. Also, student filmmakers can now enter their films for a chance to be screened at this year's Butte Film Festival.

Students flocked back to Chico this week to start a new semester at Chico State. They told NSPR about some of their favorite things about the city and gave advice to incoming freshmen. Also, the grocer Chico Natural Foods Cooperative has seen a loss in revenue in recent years but was met with a spike in membership and sales over the weekend after concerned community members put a call out for help on social media, and a public commenter punched another member of the public during a recent Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting.

Ronnie Dean Stout II pleaded not guilty in court yesterday to Park Fire arson charges. Also, at Chico State's Fall Convocation, faculty and community members addressed students. Chico State's President highlighted increased admissions at the school. Mayor Andrew Coolidge also spoke in a video about the city's homeless settlement agreement. And moderate to heavy rainfall is possible over the Park Fire burn scar today and tomorrow.

As progress continues to be made on the Park Fire, officials are urging those returning to burn scar areas to drive safely. Also, Sutter County will benefit from a $13.8 million grant for Comcast to build infrastructure for low-cost, broadband internet, and residents can pick their own peaches at Chico State's University Farm today.

In this episode of the Braun Performance & Rehab Podcast, Dan is joined by Dr. Tyler Lesher to discuss his journey as a rehab professional and clinician, the lessons he has learned from treating elite athletes, and how he applies them in his clinical practice. Dan and Tyler also discuss his upcoming cohort of the ARC, in addition to chatting about the "Iso God", Aliens, and more. Tyler Lesher enters his third season as the UCLA men's basketball team's athletic trainer in 2023-24. In his current role, Lesher handles all day-to-day athletic training responsibilities and oversees multiple sports medicine interns. He joined the UCLA athletic training and sports medicine department in October 2021. Lesher's work with the men's basketball program has been vital over the past two years. In 2022-23, UCLA went 31-6 overall and won the Pac-12 Conference's regular-season crown. In 2021-22, the Bruins went 27-8 overall and finished in second place in the Pac-12 standings. The Bruins advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 in 2022 and 2023. Lesher, who hails from Wyoming, spent the 2020-21 academic year as an assistant athletic trainer at Florida Atlantic University. Prior to his time at FAU, he spent four years working in the NBA and the NBA's G League. Lesher served as the head athletic trainer/strength and conditioning specialist for the Greensboro Swarm, the Charlotte Hornets' NBA G League affiliate from August 2017 until November 2020. His first opportunity in the NBA took place with the Cleveland Cavaliers. While in Cleveland (Sept. 2016 until May 2017), Lesher served as an intern athletic trainer. He was the head strength and conditioning/assistant athletic trainer for the Canton Charge, the Cavs' NBA G League affiliate. After he earned his bachelor's degree in athletic training from New Mexico State University in 2014, Lesher worked as a men's basketball graduate assistant athletic trainer for Chico State. He earned his master's degree in kinesiology at Chico State while on the job from 2014 to 2015. Lesher, 34, is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Certified Orthopedic Physician Extender (OPE-C), Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) and Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES). He earned his Doctorate in Health Science and Exercise Leadership from California University of Pennsylvania, focusing reducing systemic inflammation through nutrition and exercise, in the fall of 2021. Enloe Behavioral Health — which is the only voluntary in-patient mental health facility in the region — has announced it plans to shut down this August. The move comes amid shortages of mental health professionals in the area and a lack of resources. Also, the group Students for Justice in Palestine, Chico staged a "Study in Solidarity" on Chico State's campus yesterday, and more housing units may soon be available in Plumas County.

The Hmong Cultural Center in Oroville is one of several groups facing possible future funding cuts due to Proposition 1, but the center's concerns are lessened thanks to a nearly $900,000 grant it recently received. Also, Chico State is rebranding its School of Communication. The newly named “School of Media Entertainment, Technology and Immersive Experiences” aims to prepare students for changes in the media and technology industries, and California lawmakers are promoting a series of bills that aim to prevent sexual discrimination and harassment at California's public colleges and universities.

Shasta County has certified election results and Supervisor Kevin Crye has survived the recall. Also, the Hmong Cultural Center of Butte County was awarded nearly $900,000 in funding for a youth-led campaign to decrease mental health stigma, and Chico State is inviting students and community members to volunteer in honor of César Chávez this weekend.

An emergency alert radio system now being used in Shasta County hopes to reach rural residents and provide another means of emergency preparedness. Also, after months of pressure, Gov. Gavin Newsom has joined the calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, and Chico State announced next year's Book in Common. It will be Héctor Tobar's “Our Migrant Souls: A Meditation on Race and the Meanings and Myths of ‘Latino.'”

On February 24, 1978, 5 young men from Yuba County, California attended a college basketball game at Chico State, which is a CSU campus in Chico, Ca. The game was about 50 miles away from their hometowns. The 5 men were: 29 year old Bill Sterling, 24 year old Jack Huett, 32 year old Ted Weiher , 30 year old Jack Madruga, and 25 year old Gary Mathias. By the next morning, their families realized their sons had not returned home that night. They have never been seen alive again. “I said to myself, this was the biggest failure of my whole life,” recalls Tiago Carneiro, founder and owner of Nova Kombucha and Novo Brazil Brewing. In this week's episode of Happy Half Hour, he's talking about his business' epic near-crash-and-burn during the pandemic. Which, if you do some quick back-of-the-napkin math, wasn't all that long ago. We learn a lot in this episode. Tiago tells us he's from a restaurant family in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, which is the cattle- and therefore beef-producing region of the country. His dad started in bakeries (giving Tiago his first up-close look at fermentation, a big theme in his adult life) and moved on to restaurants, eventually founding a major Brazilian fast-food burger chain and craft soda brand. Tiago went to college to study engineering, only to feel the pull back to his family roots and switch gears to food science. From there, he launched an award-winning brewery that would go on to become South America's largest and winningest. To know Tiago is to know that best is simply never enough, so he decided to try to bring his business to what he considers to be the best beer city in the world: San Diego. His wife initially wasn't down, but she agreed to visit with a pit stop in Los Cabos. I won't spoil the whole story here, but it involves a very long bus ride up the peninsula to Tijuana, after which the couple finally ended up in San Diego, where Novo Brazil Brewing was born in the Eastlake part of Chula Vista. Enter the pandemic, near-ruin, and a fermentation-experiment-turned-sales miracle, and we have one of San Diego's most successful beer and kombucha stories—which is saying something in a town known worldwide for its fermented drinks. Tiago's story is fascinating and inspiring, and it comes across best when he tells it himself. He brought infectious energy, a deep belief in God, and unmatched ambition to the podcast and SDM's offices. That he also brought Novo's picanha steak (in an actual cast-iron pan) and burger for us to sample didn't hurt, either. We also learned that, once upon a time, Troy graduated from Chico State with a poetry degree and a plan to learn Brazilian Portuguese so he could teach English in Brazil. He never made it down there, but he did make his way through language lessons. It is my new favorite fact about our dear host.
