Aliza J. Sokolow: Spring Produce, “This is What I Eat” & Fail-Proof Vegetable Puree

On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Aliza J. Sokolow, author of “This is What I Eat: Fun Activities for Mindful Eating.”    Sokolow, who is a private chef, food stylist and photographer, loves the change of seasons … and the fruits and vegetables that go with it.    “My eating and cooking and shopping is very seasonal,” Sokolow says. “Luckily in California we have microclimate, so we get the best of everything all year round.”   For Sokolow, the simplest thing is to go to the market and look around. Find a few things that look good, sample and eat them. When you buy great ingredients, you do not need to do a lot to your food.   One of her go-to farmers market recipes is a breakfast taco, made with local ingredients: tortillas (from local grain), eggs, avocado and limes. Sometimes she'll buy salsa at the market or make it herself.    Sokolow wrote “This is What I Eat” as a way to get kids excited about healthy eating and cooking. The book is filled with activities - regrowing produce, food scavenger hunts - designed to make fruits and vegetables fun! Sokolow wants kids to build curiosity about produce through the lens of color, shapes, sizes and seasons.    “Cooking is daunting for many people, but it's really just washing and cutting things [and] not everything needs to be cooked; certain things you can eat raw,” she explains. “I just want to encourage eating things that you find at the farmers market or stuff that doesn't have a nutrition label, because it's [usually] pretty delicious; and if it's not, add a little bit of salt to it and it'll probably bring out the flavors.”   Sokolow talks about her love of produce - and what started it, some of her favorite spring recipes, and ways to have fun at farmers markets. She also shares her fail-proof vegetable puree recipe at JewishJournal.com/podcasts.   Learn more at SokolowPhoto.com, @alizajsokolow on Instagram, check out her book “This is What I Eat,” as well as the This Is What I Eat Substack. On the eve of the most significant changes to Major League Baseball's rules and scheduling, we continue our lament of 2021's radical streamlining of the minor leagues and obsess about the demise of its oldest circuit - the New York-Penn League - with City University of New York history/philosophy/political science professor Michael Sokolow ("Bush League: The Brooklyn Cyclones, Staten Island Yankees, and the New York-Penn League").   A staple of upstate New York and interior Pennsylvania summers dating back to 1939, the Class D-turned-Short-Season-Class-A NYPL represented 82 years of small-market America's pastime in the cradle of its historical birthplace - until MLB's grand realignment plan led to its disbandment in 2020.    We talk about the league's history, what led to its ultimate demise, as well as explore two of the NYPL's most curious teams - the New York Mets-owned Brooklyn Cyclones (originally the St. Catherines [ON] Blue Jays, and now part of MiLB's High-A South Atlantic League), and the former Oneonta, NY-relocated Staten Island Yankees (now reincarnated as the independent Atlantic League FerryHawks) - in an attempt to bring the "big time" minor league game to New York City's outer boroughs.   + + + PRE-ORDER "Bush League: The Brooklyn Cyclones, Staten Island Yankees, and the New York-Penn League" from SUNY Press/Excelsior NOW!

Kathryn interviews Author Brad Buchanan PhD.Few people have survived the nightmare of a stem cell transplant gone sideways. Fewer still have had the audacity to write about the miraculous yet bewildering experience of becoming a genetic chimera. Brad Buchanan breaks this taboo and offers readers eloquent, surrealistic and profoundly moving passages about his dramatic transformation and amazing recovery. His fourth book of poems, tells in lyrically oblique confessions and hallucinatory vignettes the difficult but nevertheless wonderful history and aftermath of the author's 2016 stem cell transplant. The book explores the problems of survivor guilt, chemical dependency, and unprocessed or displaced trauma, while tracing an ultimately positive narrative of recovery and acceptance. He holds a PhD from Stanford University and taught British and Postcolonial Literature, as well as Creative Writing, at Sacramento State University until his retirement in 2016. His poetry, fiction and scholarly articles have appeared in nearly 200 journals.Kathryn also interviews Author Aliza J. Sokolow. Award-winning food photographer and private chef Aliza J. Sokolow introduces children to healthy eating and engaging with our planet through a bold and bright color-and-activity book. Filled with 30+ activities and journal pages, appealing to the senses of even the pickiest eaters, we learn valuable lessons such as how to grow an avocado tree at home and how families around the world eat. Every November, as the weather and leaves continue to change and we enter a season of Thanksgiving as well as gift-giving, this podcast sets aside a few episodes to focus on how we can make our lives and our careers better and more fulfilling. And so we begin the third annual presentation of this enlightening series... Bettering Ourselves, Bettering Our Careers (Part One) You'll hear from artists, coaches, and performers and how they have a found balance between their on stage and off stage lives, providing perspective and insight from their own challenges and experiences. Jules Helm starts us off with a focus on self-care and personal growth, using movement and acting techniques to bring both our mind and body into alignment. He will be sharing his own journey of self discovery as he learned to better love himself and be more comfortable with others, keeping performance onstage rather than having it mask the rest of his life as well. We will also get into the various techniques he teaches to bring actors into a more authentic presentation of themselves as well as their characters. As Jules says, “The first step toward great acting is deeper self-discovery and realization,” which is a great place for us to start bettering ourselves and bettering our careers. 02:42 - Jules and his hometown of Portland 08:26 - Story #1 and being inspired by Charlie Chaplin 18:52 - Story #2 and how the world conditions us 31:45 - Story #3 and his teaching of actors 44:12 - The Williamson Technique Subscribe to WINMI and get Bonus Episodes on Supercast  OR Make a Donation to the production of this podcast ---------- Why I'll Never Make It is hosted by Off-Broadway actor and singer Patrick Oliver Jones and is a production of WINMI Media, LLC. Follow WINMI: Website | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube     The Williamson Technique... The Williamson Technique, developed by Loyd Williamson, is most often taught to actors in conjunction with the Meisner Technique, because it pairs well with the particular emotional demands placed on actors. Williamson collaborated with, and was a student of, American choreographer and dancer Anna Sokolow. He was watching Sokolow's dancers move freely and without tension, while at the same time he observed Meisner's actors were crippled physically by the size of their emotional lives.  Thus, the development of the Williamson Technique began as a movement training for actors that is loosely based in modern dance. It is designed to help the actor access and inhabit a physical instrument (i.e. the body) that is open, released, vulnerable, expansive, and responsive. The Williamson Technique emphasizes these primary objectives: Free the actor's instrument by accessing awareness and permission. Cultivate the student's connection to his personal, ‘truthful‘ experience, and the permission to act on it expansively.    Enhance the actor's sensual (of or relating to the five senses) relationship with the world, thereby creating a vivid connection with and sensitivity to impulses.   Bring that freedom and connection with one's surroundings into ensemble collaboration and the creation of original physical performance.     Audition Story Connection is definitely one of the bed rocks of acting and performing on stage, whether it's with the fellow performers on stage or the audience itself. In our main conversation, Jules mostly talked about a connection with ourselves first and foremost, but there is also the important connection with the role or the show that we're in or auditioning for. In this week's bonus episode Jules shares an audition story that took him out of his comfort zone and into the world of the Blue Man Group. Become a monthly subscriber to get access to this and other bonus episodes. Final Five Questions After our main conversation, Jules sat down to answer the five final questions. Among several topics, he shares what success has meant to him (a continuation of what he mentioned in the second story) and what frustrates him most about this industry, particularly in New York City. Read it all on the WINMI Blog.

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the country this past Spring, Rich Sokolow sprang into action. As Managing Director and the Director of Research at Davidson Kempner Capital Management L.P., an independent global investment management firm, Sokolow knows people. And as a founding member and longtime Chair of the "All Stars" Board of Directors - a national leader in the field of Afterschool Development - Rich knows that "when asked to help, people say yes." This is an inspiring story of how a private citizen acquired PPE, convened people together, and made things happen in the tumultuous early days of the pandemic. It's also a reminder that we are all capable of much more than we think.   Listen and subscribe, wherever you get your podcasts!

Bonny Meyer is the Principal of Meyer Family Enterprises, an investment company dedicated to the regeneration of the planet and society. After selling Silver Oak Cellars in 2001, Bonny is now a partner in Meyer Family Cellars, a winery run by her son, Matt, and daughter-in-law, Karen. She's the author of the upcoming memoir: PERFECTLY PAIRED The Love Affair Behind Silver Oak Cellars. Existing mostly in front of a laptop in an East Williamsburg basement, front person Eli Sokolow, acts more as a mad scientist than a composer. There he spends countless hours mixing serums of cellphone demos, samples, and beats, to generate the bands unique sound. Endorsed by the likes of Matt Johnson (St. Vincent, Jeff Buckley) and even Slash, Sokolow has been able to make quite a name for himself during his twenty one years on this planet. On the surface their music is bombastic, wild and even a little bit joyful, but underneath the surface, Sokolow's lyrics point to dire and biting truths. This anxiety is best illustrated by “I'm So Strange,” with its joyous whistle laden tune being in sharp contrast to lines like, “I went from Watching Nickelodeon to watching you Shoot Heroin.” The Living Strange clearly have a mission, and that mission is to rage as hard as possible against the dying of a world they are just getting to know.
