Following on from the success of Green Inc and with the same bold, provocative and entirely un-switchoffable energy, writer, comedian and satirist Heydon Prowse turns his tongue-in-cheek attention corporate Wokewashing. From a razor company talking about #MeToo to an LGBT sandwich and a burger chain tackling depression, writer and satirist Heydon Prowse unpacks how some of the world's biggest corporations are falling over themselves to appear socially conscious, progressive. And he lifts the lid on the advertising and PR companies who've woken up to just how much money they can make helping them.In this first episode, Pride Before a Fall?, Heydon investigates corporations' approach to LGBTQ+ inclusivity. He'll trace the history from brands' first engagements with gay customers to the situation today, where Pride month sees the high street and social media festooned with corporate rainbow flags. Heydon will ask how many companies live up to this inclusive message in actions. This episode will also take a look at the backlash to brand engagement with LGBTQ+ issues that has been seen in the UK and the USA as the corporate world is drawn into the culture wars. It's led to boycotts and hasty backpedalling, but what's really going on, and why?To listen to the rest of the series, just search for Wokewash on BBC Sounds.Contributors: Peter Tatchell, Activist and Director of the Peter Tatchell Foundation Prof Alison Taylor of New York University's Stern Business School and author of 'Higher Ground: How Businesses Can Do the Right Thing in a Turbulent World.' In this episode of Reel Stories, we checked in with Heydon Prowse. Heydon is a is a writer, actor, producer and was one half of BBC Three show ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised' (RWBT). He is now the Founder of production company Flying Shoe Films, where he has done advertising work for clients including Greenpeace, Heineken, Netflix, Oxfam, Jonathan Pie, Amnesty International, Sony, War Child and more. In this episode we chart his journey into the arts and political satire, moving away from social justice activism, identity politics and the projects he works on now. We also discuss how Heydon's identity became tied to his work for a long time, the mental exhaustion he felt from the fame of RWBT and how he now enjoys being behind the camera rather than in front of it. For Heydon's mental health, we discuss his sobriety journey and the issues he had with alcohol as well as his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) which he has had since childhood. I loved the BAFTA award-winning show The Revolution Will Be Televised so much, with its cutting satire and hilarious pranks tackling serious issues it was the perfect combination of silly and serious all in one. It was a pleasure to chat with Heydon Prowse who along with Jolyon Rubenstein (E2) were the stars of the show as well as the writers too. Hear how Heydon along with Joe Wade were already creating prank-style undercover videos about political stuff and then added Jolyon who brought new characters into the mix. Together they spent almost a decade creating some of the best TV and getting into amazing situations sometimes quite dangerous but always hilariously entertaining and thought-provoking. Heydon shares some great stories on how they planned the pranks and got access to places like the Hague, the Saudi Arabian Embassy and Google Headquarters as well as how they got out of more than a few sticky situations when they almost got caught. He also shares his conflict around examining his own motivations, wondering if protest and activism really work and if being a critic is the best way to go in life. Heydon is a deep, thoughtful, and funny guy and I can't wait to see what he does next. In this conversation I chat to writer/director/performer/producer, Heydon Prowse (https://www.twitter.com/HeydonProwse).Heydon began his career creating hidden camera political stunts with the viral creative agency Don't Panic. Many of these videos gained international press coverage. This led to the BBC3 show 'The Revolution Will Be Televised,' which Heydon co-wrote and co-starred in with Jolyion Rubenstein. The show went on to win a BAFTA, a Rose d’Or and a Broadcast Award over three seasons. Other TV shows include Democracy Dealers on BBC3, Revolting on BBC2 and The Ministry of Justice on Channel 4. As well as directing documentaries for the likes of Vice and The Guardian, Heydon also hosted and wrote the BBC2 documentary called The Town That Took on The Taxman. He most recently created the Spotify podcast series Sex, Lies & DM Slides, featuring Gizzi Erskine and Sydney Lima.Heydon breaks down how he got into making hidden camera political stunts on YouTube with Don’t Panic. He describes what it was like outing MPs, who lost their jobs as a result of his stunts and the anxiety that came with dealing with the online aftermath. Heydon talks about the anxiety that came with being behind illegal stunts that could have imprisoned him and the crash that comes after filming such highly adrenalized productions. He explains why he felt it was unwise to loose skills in producing and directing, as he became more front of camera talent. We talk about dealing with imposters syndrome and this idea of being an introverted performer. We discuss how social media has made comedy more of level but the curse that also comes democratising content. Heydon describes the struggles of pitching to commissioners and how The Revolution Will Be Televised got made. Why he has decided to focus on creating mainstream entertainment content and how the Spotify series 'Sex Lies and DM slides' came about.Heydon explains the strength in being part of a network and the opportunities that arise as a result, why it’s not necessary to have an agent anymore and why creating content is only 10% of what leads to eventual success. He reveals what strategies he used to create viral videos and why he wears so many creative hats. We talk about this idea of constructive procrastination, the challenge with writing scripts on spec, the importance in toughening up as an artist and loads more!If you like this episode please do rate and review the podcast on Apple.Happy listening :)Steve - @offkeysteve See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
I have loved Jolyon's work ever since I saw him and Heydon Prowse in The Revolution Will Be Televised which was satirical comedy at its best. Pure genius. In this episode, Jolyon shares how he used his white privilege to gain access for some of the crazy sketches in the series and how his grandfather was the Obi-Wan in his heroes' journey. He shares how he almost died at 22 and how therapy has helped him overcome self-sabotage and learn to love and heal his inner child and finally unleash his full potential. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ravinol/message
Briana and Maddy are isolated on the Yorkshire Moors when they discover a lost key. Little did they know that it would lead to a Secret Garden. Brought up selfish and overindulged, if you listen closely, you can hear them bickering. But, thanks to a magic chant spoken around a midnight fire to the beat of an ancient dance under the full moon they are able to resolve their differences and grow as people. This week we discuss Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 novel, The Secret Garden. We watched the 1993 film adaptation starring Kate Maberly, Maggie Smith, Heydon Prowse, and Andrew Knott. The 2020 film adaptation will be covered in Part 2. This is one of our favourite books we have read for the podcast so if you have not read it already, we strongly recommend you do. A spark of magic is always good for you.

Being blind hasn't ever stopped the broadcaster Peter White from loving football, and that's reflected in his own choice of a good read when he argues in favour of Brian Clough - as captured by Duncan Hamilton who covered Notts Forest during their glory years for the local paper. By contrast the satirist and prankster Heydon Prowse, fresh from his BBC3 series, 'The Revolution will be Televised', brings a description of tax havens and how they work to the table, in 'Treasure Islands' by Nicholas Shaxson. Harriett Gilbert meanwhile proposes 'Faro's Daughter', a romantic Regency thriller by Georgette Heyer. We'll see what Peter and Heydon make of that. Producer: Mark Smalley
