Kay and James are sleep deprived to the point of delirium and even a well-rested and thoroughly perky Boyd can't stop the good ship Pilot from taking on water and coming perilously close to capsizing completely. Still, between bickering about the olympics, exploring the etymology of Strictly Come Dancing and some minor controversy about how to pronounce a rather important name, we still manage (somehow) to review Vince Vaughn's crime adventure Bad Monkey on Apple, Aimee Lou Wood and David Morrissey's dysfunctional family drama Daddy issues on BBC3, and Sam Neill's Aussie legal drama The Twelve on ITVX. This episode is one for nerds and normies alike as we begin with an audit of the accessibility of sci-fi films and, unexpectedly, trainers. Bit that's not all, because Fellow Travellers star Jonathan Bailey drops by to talk about that show with Boydy, and James finally gets the chance to hold forth on Shōgun, managing to explode Kay's brain in the process (in English, not Portuguese). Plus we uncover a mystery in Prime Video's Dead Hot and break James upon the wheel of BBC3 comedy with Things You Should Have Done.

It's Claire Delaney who joins Alexa this week to give us a tour behind the scenes of working on the ITV show ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream', the search for Sophie and Sky. Claire is a vocal coach with a private business and also teaches at UK Drama School Italia Conti. She initially trained in Opera, performing at the likes of the Royal Albert Hall, and now works with singers of all skill levels from beginners to West End professionals. To celebrate the winners of ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream' and their West End debut, Claire is here to give us the gossip on how she landed this TV job, what her role entailed on the program, and how we can help our theatre performers navigate auditions.  KEY TAKEAWAYS "Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream'' premiered on ITV in October 2023. The program followed the quest for two fresh and undiscovered talents in musical theatre, aiming to cast them in the roles of Sophie Sheridan and Sky Ramand for the West End rendition of the musical "Mamma Mia!". If you or one of your students are thinking about applying for a TV show like this in the future, Claire believes you need to be strong in the following areas: story telling, working collaboratively, creating chemistry, having the endurance to perform 9 shows a week, and not taking yourself too seriously. In previous "Mamma Mia!" shows, it was understood that straight tone was desired over vibrato. However this more traditional approach didn't appear to be the case in the TV show. Claire loves vibrato because it adds colour and a feeling of release in the voice. As a teacher you need to make sure your student can do both so they can use whichever they think is right for them. BEST MOMENTS ‘I feel like having worked on TV now it adds to my credibility' ‘It's not Shakespeare, it's pure entertainment and just joyous' ‘The key to any audition is to do your background development on the character' ‘My best advice is just be cheeky and ask, the worst anyone can say is no and not everybody will say no'   EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: https://www.delaneycoaching.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @Claire.delaney.coach Tik Tok: Claire_TheVocalCoach Relevant Links & Mentions: Fiona McDougal: https://fionamcdougal.com/ London School of Musical Theatre: https://www.lsmt.co.uk/ Italia Conti Arts: https://www.italiaconti.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 91 How to Help Prepare Singers for Drama School Auditions with Michael Vickers Songs mentioned: Luck Be a Lady from Guys and Dolls; Trustfall by Pink; Somebody To Love from We Will Rock You; Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer; Shivers by Ed Sheeran; Night Fever from Saturday Night Fever Vocology in Practice: https://www.vocologyinpractice.org/ ABOUT THE GUEST Claire Delaney is a professional voice coach and currently teaches at Italia Conti. In this episode of The Directors' Take podcast, your hosts Oz Arshad and Marcus Anthony Thomas are joined by director Joelle Mae David to talk us through her journey into the industry and how she went about directing the middle block of the hit BBC and A24 show, Dreaming Whilst Black from creator Adjani Salmon. As ever this is a craft focused conversation which covers the following:   -Joelle's journey into the industry. -The challenges of making her first narrative short film, Greasy Spoon. -Setting up and running her own production company. -How she got her first TV credits. -How she works within a tough filming schedule.  -How to direct comedy. -The difference between being a middle block and lead block director. -Managing work/life balance as a working director.   Joelle Mae David started making her own short documentaries that shone a light on undiscovered talent from marginalised backgrounds which ultimately got featured on BBC3. She has since set up a company Bluebird Pictures with a focus on more narrative storytelling, that will further help give marginalised talent a chance and to tell stories that challenge the status quo.    She's obviously a filmmaker on the rise, having success with her short films Greasy Spoon and Cycle, before most recently landing the role as second block director on the wonderful Dreaming Whilst Black created by Adjani Salmon who stars in it too, Max Evans and Natasha Jatania. She's also currently working as Lead director on Queenie from Showrunner Candice Carty-Williams for Channel 4.   Nuggets of the week Oz: Oppenheimer (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Ludwig Göransson Marcus: Documentary - The Phenomenon Joelle: The Firm by Sydney Pollack   Credits Music by Oliver Wegmüller   Socials Instagram: @TheDirectorsTakePodcast Twitter: @DirectorsTake Joelle's socials: Twitter & Instagram   If you have any questions relating to the episode or have topics you would like covering in future releases, reach out to us at TheDirectorsTake@Outlook.com.

I cannot quite believe I am saying this, but on today's episode, we are joined by one of my idols, Dannii Minogue!  I was totally obsessed with Dannii when she was a judge on the X-Factor, I spent my Saturdays working at Topshop and discussing with the girls what outfit we thought she was going to wear! And let's not forget all of her bangers like ‘Put The Needle on It' and ‘I Begin to Wonder', which were literally on repeat on my CD player!  We'll talk about Dannii's epic career, from becoming the most successful act on the UK dance charts EVER, to quitting X Factor, to presenting the UK's first ever gay dating show, I Kissed A Boy, which is out now on BBC3. It is SO good, the casting is excellent, and I'm not gonna give away too much, but I will say this… watching potential couples meet for the first time with a full-on snog is EXCELLENT television!! We also chat about some of the toxic press Dannii has had to overcome throughout her career, she shares what it's like to date in the public eye, and what being a true ally to the LGBTQIA+ community looks like.  Even if you weren't a fan of Dannii Minogue back in the day, which is HIGHLY UNLIKELY - you are going to LOVE this episode!  Dannii is MOTHER. In her intro, Kate says she wrote the book out of “love and anger” - “the love because I want to shout from the rooftops that classical music is gripping, essential, personally and politically game-changing. The anger because I can't shout proudly about a culture that wilfully closes its doors on perceived outsiders.”We hope you enjoy our chat with Kate!

The Bear there was. The Bear, The Bear. All black and brown and covered in hair. Well, not quite but The Bear is here in the UK at last nonetheless, landing this week on Disney+, and it was definitely worth the wait. We also head out on a murderous cruise (with murderous ducks) in BBC3's Wreck, and go on the hunt for Neo Nazis with Stephen Graham in ITV's The Walk-In. All this and more dreadfully entitled ramblings as Boyd and James bicker about the mechanics of advance screener codenames. They're both dreadful.

The BBC Proms is celebrating what would've been Aretha Franklin's 80th birthday, and leading the tribute is American singer-songwriter Sheléa. She's a protegee of Quincy Jones who also found a mentor in Stevie Wonder, and names Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston as some of her inspirations. Sheléa shares Aretha Franklin's influences of gospel, jazz and soul, and her skills to play the piano and turn her voice to a variety of styles. She performs live in the studio and demonstrates the power of Aretha's voice as well as her own. For our Thursday review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh and Olivia Laing have been watching Official Competition, a comedy film starring Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martínez which takes aim at the film industry and its stars, and Red Rose, a BBC3 teen horror drama set in Bolton looking at the power of smartphones to shape young lives. Torn is a new BBC Radio 4 series exploring ten key moments in the history of fashion, from the allure of mauve to the rebellion of mini-skirts. Presenter Gus Casely-Hayford, curator, historian and the inaugural director of V&A East, joins Shahidha for a whistlestop tour of fashion's cultural hits and environmental misses over five centuries. Presenter: Shahidha Bari Producer: Sarah Johnson
