Herzlichst, Anouk

Episode 38 – Obscure: After the Event United by a shared love of one band, Graham and Chris close Season Six with their most personal episode yet - a sun‑drenched, queue‑length, bladder‑testing, heart‑thumping deep dive into Pet Shop Boys' Obscure concerts at Camden's Electric Ballroom. What begins as a simple “after the event” recap quickly becomes a full‑blown oral history of the week London turned into PSB City: 5am superfans, numbered wristbands, Chicken Shop suitcase storage, tactical toilet breaks, merch‑lounge carpets, and the strange, beautiful camaraderie of a crowd who'd waited forty years for a night like this. From there, the Pod Cast Boys relive the gigs in forensic, front‑row detail - the dry ice, the wallow‑heavy setlist, the thrill of seeing their heroes in person, and the emotional punch of hearing deep cuts in a tiny room with 1,500 ecstatic fans and their closest friends.  They celebrate new drummer Max Blunos' death metal roots, legacy guest stars Sylvia, Mark and Johnny F-ing Marr, Neil's lectern‑top lyric folder, and the five times an entire ballroom embraced the words: “Tonight - no hits!” Along the way they revisit their own “scientific” setlist predictions, the chaos of their travel logistics, decode “the vibe”, and share the joy of experiencing Pet Shop Boys with lifelong friends, new global acquaintances, and a surprising number of people wearing In Depth T‑shirts. Finally, they wrap the season with the inaugural In Depth Obscure Awards - honouring the strangest, boldest, most unexpected moments of the Obscure era - and reflect on why these shows felt like a celebration not just of PSB's deep cuts, but of their own teenage imperial phases too. A gig diary; a fan documentary; a tribute to the power of community - the perfect finale to a season that's traced four decades of Pet Shop Boys from Please to Volume to Obscure. Pop the Trunk is officially in the building! Episode 8 marks the first time the show records in-studio, and the crew is joined by Philadelphia legends Outerspace — Planetary and Crypt the Warchild — for a conversation 28 years in the making. They go all the way back: Puerto Rican families landing in Philly, finding each other in East Oak Lane, older brothers as the cheat code into hip hop, and the G-Rap moment that made Planetary pick up a pen. From there it's Footwork open mics, cassette tapes in the trunk, Super Regular Records, Army of the Pharaohs, and the grinding East Coast tours that built everything. No filter. No holds barred. This one runs deep.

In Depth Pet Shop Boys Podcast

With Volume - Pet Shop Boys' complete visual history - finally landing, Graham and Chris open the book and step straight into four decades of meticulously crafted pop iconography. Using the anniversary of Please as their start point, they trace how the duo's visual world was forged even before chart success. They begin with their earliest photo shoots: Eric Watson's ripped T‑shirts and tennis racquets; the Tottenham flat where friendships, romances and future lyrics intertwined; and the stark, stylish images that helped define the PSB aesthetic. From there they follow the thread through XL Design, ZTT's manifesto-driven maximalism, Factory's cool minimalism, and the arrival of Mark Farrow - the designer who would help turn Pet Shop Boys sleeves into modern art. Along the way they revisit the key visual turning points: the first Boy cap, the tartan‑trousered Brixton showcase, the “don't look triumphant” Top of the Pops performance, the industrial luxury of the West End Girls sleeve, and the early videos where Neil and Chris perfected the art of doing… practically nothing. But are they “art”, or just “dead arty”? By exploring the images, collaborators and ideas that shaped Pet Shop Boys' visual identity, Graham and Chris paint a podcast portrait that uncovers how PSB instinctively understood that pop should look as good as it sounds. In Depth Pet Shop Boys Podcast

With Pet Shop Boys preparing to dive deep into their catalogue for five intimate Obscure shows at Camden's Electric Ballroom, Graham and Chris roll up their sleeves for their most forensic fan investigation yet: can two amateurs really predict the ultimate non‑singles setlist? First they uncover the historical clues - the 40th anniversary of Please and a rediscovered 1986 photoshoot - before following the evidence to the duo's early‑80s Camden stomping ground and a 1984 Pits and Perverts benefit, the Barfly's legendary 200‑capacity War Child fundraiser, and the Electric Ballroom's own independent wrestling pedigree. From there, they plunge into the outer edges of the Tennant/Lowe universe: Further Listening deep cuts, lost intros, 28‑minute Bobby O experiments, Japanese / Czech collaborations, and the question of which Pet Shop Boys track is the most obscure ever. Along the way they weigh up fan favourites, Radio 2 poll results, Chris Lowe's own 2008 fantasy setlist, dream merch ideas, and the songs their own In Depth listeners most want to hear. What emerges is a gloriously over‑engineered, spreadsheet‑driven, “scientific” prediction of the Obscure setlist - complete with debates about staging, guests, new arrangements, and whether or not the shows will see them strip back to just two men and a very dependable laptop. Part history lesson, part detective story, part love letter to Pet Shop Boys' deepest cuts - this is the perfect warm‑up for the most anticipated Pet Shop Boys concerts in decades. Graham and Chris return to 1986 for the second half of their 40th-anniversary Please deep dive, placing Pet Shop Boys' debut into the wider world it landed in - Cold War tension, Chernobyl panic, post-Live Aid earnestness, brick-sized mobile phones and a pop landscape buzzing with the likes of A‑ha, Five Star and Madonna. From there they go track‑by‑track, and enter Advision's world of talking calculators, existential mathematics, singing lessons, sax solos, misfiring sequencers, kebab-house retsina, studio parties, drunken TV appearances, tubular bells and truculent trombonists. Along the way they unearth lost demos, unlikely influences, rare remixes, and some of Neil's first and finest lyrical blueprints.  What emerges is a love letter to London, to escape, to youth and to hedonism. Forty years on, and Please still sounds like the beginning of something. Unboxing the opening chapter of their 40th-anniversary super deluxe celebration of Please, Graham and Chris rewind to PSB Year Zero - the moment an “ex-Smash Hits journalist” met a “weird architect” and began politely reshaping pop. They trace the stories of five pivotal Please people who helped turn Neil and Chris into Pet Shop Boys: eight-track mentor Ray Roberts; Hi-NRG maverick Bobby O, maximalist manager Tom Watkins; rock-steady producer Stephen Hague; and legendary vocalist and Dylan collaborator Helena Springs.  Along they way, they tell the full, cinematic origin stories of West End Girls and Opportunities - from knee-slapping demos and New York studio bills to T.S. Eliot, sealed trains and chart-dodging false starts - and share their own first steps into PSB fandom. Evidence from the Frontline: Mental Health in Crisis Affected Contexts, episode 5: EASE“What matters to young people? Climate, jobs, and mental health.”Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) is an evidence-based group intervention that helps 10–15-year-olds in adversity-affected communities manage stress, anxiety, and depression through skills training. It includes seven sessions for adolescents and three for caregivers, using adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques delivered by trained non-specialist helpers. In this fifth episode, Sarah Harrison, Director of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub, speaks with Professor Mark Jordans (researcher at  King's College London and Director of Research and Development at War Child), and Dr Zeinab Hijazi (Global Lead on Mental Health at UNICEF), to hear more about EASE.We learn that, while not a ‘magic wand', EASE has shown significant results and could help fill a gap in mental health support for young people in crisis-affected and low-resource settings. Mark, Sarah, and Zeinab discuss the rigorous training, competencies, and supervision needed for non-specialist providers, and the journey to develop, test and adapt EASE for implementation worldwide, including scale-up in Ukraine. They discuss future research opportunities, such as youth-led research or strengthening and simplifying the intervention. We learn that EASE should be integrated into a broader system of care, informed by national policy frameworks and practice standards. Key resources for practitionersEarly Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) – manual and practice materials in multiple languages published by the World Health OrganisationUNICEF Adolescent Mental Health Hub- resources for frontline workers, adolescents, and caregiversReach Now- a tool developed by War Child, for use by community members without a professional mental health background, to improve identification of mental health problems in young people and promote care seeking.Read more about the research:Mark J.D. After surviving the horrors of the Congolese genocide, Jolie's faith was pushed to its breaking point, but God's healing power proved stronger than her pain. Through surrender and forgiveness, He transformed her trauma into a testimony of freedom and redemption. Now serving in refugee resourcing, Jolie works alongside people from the very tribe that once sought to destroy her. Her ability to love her former enemies is a triumph of the gospel, a powerful reminder that nothing is too hard for God (Jeremiah 32:17) and nothing is impossible with Him (Luke 1:37). You will be deeply inspired by this conversation about healing, forgiveness, and the unstoppable grace of Jesus.   Connect with Jolie: https://brand.site/HumuraCareCenter Books mentioned:   How Dare the Sun Rise: Memoirs of a War Child by Sandra Uwiringiyimana (Author), Abigail Pesta (Author) Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust by  Immaculée Ilibagiza (Author), Steve Erwin (Contributor)   To inquire about counseling, email Louise at Louise@louisesedgwick.com.

If your heart has been broken open by what's unfolding in Gaza, you are not alone. This episode is a place to bring that ache; a collective tapestry of grief, courage and the power of art to keep our humanity alive. Each Life Sacred was born from the choice of not looking away, from witnessing the unimaginable suffering of children in Palestine and feeling the weight of helplessness that so many of us have carried. Out of that grief, something luminous emerged - a call to create, to gather, to weave art and action into one.  Holding the creative vision of this offering are artist Anouska Beckwith and singer-songwriter Charlotte Mabon, who have brought together twenty-two musicians and six artisans to create an album and fundraiser that turns sorrow into service and beauty into a bridge. In this conversation, we sit with their stories and with the voices of many of the contributing artists: Ayla Schafer, Kieran King (War Child), Taz Babiker, Matthew Barley, Naomi Greene, Johnny Flynn, Nick Barbachano, Olivia Fern, Ya'Acov Darling Khan, Anika Nixdorf, Lauren Noa (Little Whale), Petra Palumbo, as well as Leor and Souli from Ripples Collective each sharing how this project became a vessel for tenderness, courage, and collective care. May this episode remind you that each life is sacred and that our shared humanity is something we can practice, together, every day.  Links: 100% of the proceeds of the crowdfunder will go to War Child whose teams are in Gaza now creating safe spaces for children to play, learn, and access psychological support.
