Both the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial debates hosted by the Atlanta Press Club on Georgia Public Broadcasting aired Monday evening, and aside from the notable difference between the two hours - substantive policy conversations vs "who can out-Trump the other" - some other notable moments were worth zeroing in on.Former state Senator Jason Esteves took the first hard swipe at the presumptive frontrunner, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, over the death of Secoriea Turner during her term. He and Senator Derrick Jackson took aim at former GOP lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan for his role in the state of the state currently, and Mike Thurmond presented a novel approach to tax relief: reducing and/or eliminating the state's income tax - a regressive tax. On the right, it was more "Jones v. Jackson" sniping, often with surrogate assistance from attorney general Chris Carr and even secretary of state Brad Raffensperger weighing in on both. The bombshell of the night came as the billionaire Rick Jackson found himself unable to refute their being undocumented people hired on his behalf, which Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones pounced on - unable to resist using the slur "illegals," of course.With me to discuss it all is Atlanta-based political consultant Andrew Heaton.

Founded in 1693, It's the only university in the state to offer an undergraduate major in linguistics. At Hampton University in Hampton, the city where the first African indentured servants and slaves arrived in North America in 1619, we speak to Dr. Darylyn Dance, a specialist in rhetoric and composition. We also talk to Dr. Travis Harris, a hip hop scholar who teaches at Norfolk State University in Norfolk. From them we learned about the distinctive syntactical and pronunciation features of the AAE dialect; various theories of its development, including from West African languages; some distinctive local vocabulary; the influence of hip hop in its evolution; and its controversial history related to education, including the 1979 Ann Arbor case and the 1997 Oakland decision.We learn about its labels over the years, including “non-standard Negro English” used by white linguist William Labov, “the father of sociolinguistics,” who pioneered research into AAE in the 1960s, We learn about the work of African American linguist John Baugh in exposing linguistic profiling and the development of the ebonics label by educational psychologist Robert Williams,     inventor of the BITCH test which highlighted cultural bias in standardized testing. A major theme Kelly and Chris found at the conference was, how does the progressive left recapture the narrative. Fascist can't win unless they capture education and the narratives around it that normalize injustice. How does the progressive left ask for the unimaginable. How do we ask for a better world that we don't have prisons that we don't spend billions of dollars and billions of lives to have them and instead ask for what are the kinds of care we need and what are the things that we need to meet at minimum the basic needs for people: food, clothing, shelter, health, education, transportation. How do we bring the majority of people in the United States along with the possibilities of abolition. Most Americans can't imagine an abolitionist society. How do we as educators change the conversation which then changes the narrative around this and make it imaginable? Most importantly that Capitalism can't solve capitalism

On April 11, 2002, a massacre occurred on the streets of Caracas, Venezuela, as rebelling officers and members of the country's Chamber of Commerce attempted a coup against the democratically elected president Hugo Chavez. The coup lasted just two days.The people were not having it. Chavez supporters descended from the hillsides of the poorest communities across Caracas and amassed outside of Miraflores, the presidential palace. They refused to recognize the de facto government.On April 13, Chavez's presidential guard expelled the coup leaders and returned Chavez to power.  Pressure from both the people and loyal military forces led to the collapse of the coup government. The people and the military united together to defend their democratically elected leader.
