Without any evidence, and before anyone was even charged, Farage rushed headlong onto social media and heavily suggested this was an Iranian plot, using terrorists who got into the UK on one of the small boats!Nick says that while the story initially appeared serious, the five arrested men were released on bail, no weapons were found, and one suspect had actually called the police. Nick argues that Farage used the event to falsely link the incident to asylum seekers and small boats, despite the suspects being British citizens. He claims Farage then aligned himself with the extreme right by comparing the situation to that of Danny "Tommo", a leader of a group that menaces ports. Nick describes a "media political complex" involving Farage, Rupert Lowe, and GB News that pressures the police and undermines contempt of court laws. When Liam Rondi watched a GB News panel discuss the murder of a baby and heard a guest claim that gay men are more likely to abuse the children they adopt, he was sitting in his flat in the south of France, a country he had moved to two years earlier partly to get away from the direction Britain was heading in. He picked up his phone, recorded a rebuttal and told people how to complain to Ofcom. Within a week there were 1,300 complaints, and by the time Caroline Farrow had appeared on Alex Armstrong Tonight to link Pride with paedophilia, and Bimini had built a complaints generator, the total had passed 15,000 and Ofcom had opened two investigations into the channel. In this episode he talks about the trope that is older than he is, why an apology broadcast two weeks after the fact reaches almost nobody who saw the original, what it is like to fight your own country's battle from abroad with no newsroom, no organisation and no lawyer behind you, and why, for all the invitations he expects never to receive, he would point blank refuse to go on GB News. Ofcom's investigations into both broadcasts are ongoing. GB News says it complies fully with the Broadcasting Code and will robustly defend them.

More than 40 Labour-held seats could be forced to take in more asylum seekers after Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggested affluent areas like Piddington should 'play their part', a GB News investigation has revealed.Mr Burnham, who is facing growing anger over his plan to house 1,250 migrants at MoD Bicester, told GB News last month that wealthier communities should help shoulder the burden by taking in more asylum seekers.A GB News analysis has now ranked the 42 Labour seats that sit above Bicester & Woodstock, the constituency covering Piddington, on both median house prices of £390,000 and median weekly wages of £862. But that prospect seems to have evaporated. In the wake of wars, economic conflict and diverging national interests, long-ignored trends seem to be pushing the world apart, not together. For a long time, Western political leaders have sought to downplay, if not outright deny, this swing to a multipolar global structure. However, hit by one shock after another, this mask of complacency has been falling away: the 2008 financial crash, the Eurozone debt crisis, the Brexit vote, the first election of Trump, the pandemic shutdowns, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and now the return of a second, and more geopolitically disruptive, Trump presidency. In particular, the European Union countries have now been forced to face up to the anachronism of a united ‘Western alliance'. Their political leaders can no longer hide from their countries' own vulnerability in a fractious world, unable to rely upon the protection of a US military umbrella. Trump's demands for increased defence spending by other NATO countries and Europe's inability to support Ukraine independently of America have exposed Europe's weakness. Meanwhile, Trump's tariffs against China have heightened tensions and exposed American weaknesses for crucial materials like rare earths, which China has a virtual monopoly over and are essential in many modern applications, from smartphones to advance weapons. How far might America go in pursuing its new-found national interest, and what are the possible implications? How are Britain and other European countries responding? The first is public service models that are not run for profit, like the BBC, the second is donor-led journalism and the third is the big one – advertising. And we have the advertising model to thank for the acceleration of sensationalist, clickbait journalism. Because if you're selling adverts, you're selling your readers' attention. When news outlets have to meet advertiser-set traffic quotas, that creates a lot of pressure for quantity over quality. Digital journalists are often desk-bound, required to produce dozens of articles a day out of recycled online material, with no time to pursue quality investigations or seek out minority lived experience. And the more money a broadcaster or a paper are paid for advertising, the more they will do anything to get traffic to their channel or website.  So in comes dangerous media malpractices, like opinion masquerading as fact, sensationalism and scapegoating. This episode, we speak to Richard Wilson, founder of the Stop Funding Hate campaign. The pressure group, which is celebrating a decade this year, asks companies to stop advertising in - and therefore stop providing funds for - certain British news outlets who spread disinformation and hateful rhetoric. In the shorter term, following the efforts of Stop Funding Hate supporters, GB News has reportedly lost over £131 million. Great Yarmouth MP Rupert Lowe is the newest disruptor in right-wing politics but the path he has taken to get there is a familiar one. Born in Oxford in 1957 Lowe attended an elite all boys boarding school before studying for a degree in Estate Management. After university he was a commodity broker in the City and went to Japan to work in securities but when British football clubs emerged as attractive financial assets in the 1990's he became chair of Southampton after a reverse takeover. Lowe resigned in 2006 after a decade in charge – having been blamed by many fans for relegation in 2005 after 27 years in the top flight. He made a return but resigned again in 2009 as the club's holding company went into administration.Next he decided to try his hand at politics. In 2019 Lowe became an MEP for the Brexit Party before switching to national politics after the UK left the EU in 2020, this time for Reform UK.
